INSECT BASIC INFORMATION FROM COLLIER PEST CONTROL NAPLES, FORT MYERS FLORIDA

INSECT BASIC INFORMATION

  1. The definition of an insect is that it has 3 body parts, 3 pairs of legs, 1 pair of antenna, and 1 or 2 pair of wings.
  2. An insect's circulatory system works by the body fluid being pumped by an open end tube located along the upper side and running the entire length of the body.  This tube picks up body fluid from the back portions of the body and pumps it into the head from where it simply flows back around the body parts to the rear where it is picked up and pumped up again.
  3. The word metamorphosis means to change in form.  Insects change not only in size but also in form during their development.  This process of change from egg to adult is known as metamorphosis.  These changes are not the same in all kinds of insects.  There are 4 different types of metamorphosis; they are Complete, Gradual, Incomplete, and Without Metamorphosis.
  4. Once an insect hatches from an egg, they grow in a series of definite stages.  As the insect develops, it lays down a new skeleton directly beneath the old one.  The old body wall splits down the back, and the next stage emerges and expands to a larger size before the skeleton hardens again.  This process is known as molting, as is repeated from four to eight times in the average insect before reaching adulthood.
  5. The word instar means the time an insect spends between molting as it is developing into an adult.
  6. In a Complete Metamorphosis there are 4 clearly defined stages; egg, larva (with several instars), pupa, and adult.  Insects with complete metamorphosis are beetles, moths, butterflies, flies, fleas, ants, bees, and wasps.
  7. In a Gradual Metamorphosis there are 3 defined stages; egg, nymph (with several instars), and adult.  Insects with gradual metamorphosis are cockroaches, termites, grasshoppers, bed bugs, and earwigs.
  8. In an Incomplete Metamorphosis there are 3 clearly defined stages; the egg, naiads, and adults.  The young, known as naiads, have a different body structure and completely different mode of life and the adults.  Immature forms of this group are all adapted for living in water, while the adult's live on dry land and can fly.  Insects with Incomplete Metamorphosis are dragonflies, damselflies, and mayflies.
  9. The Without Metamorphosis group there are 3 defined stages; egg, instar (with several instars), and adults.  Each instar looks like the one before it and the young look just like the adults except for size.
