WHAT IS TOXIC COLLIER PEST CONTROL NAPLES FLORIDA

WHAT IS TOXIC

Today’s modern convinces include many natural and manmade products to give us a higher standard of living.  When purchasing these products, there is a personal responsibility to pick and choose the product that combines proper safety and environmental protection for the usage needed.  Most people are not aware of the level of toxicity a product has when using it.  The general public also is not aware that the government has given us a standard code of toxicity on which each product is measured.  The level of toxicity must be put on the front of the label on any non food product produced.

The level of toxicity each product measures are found on the label of the product in the form of a SIGNAL WORD.  This SIGNAL WORD indicates how potentially dangerous this product is to humans and other animals.  Knowing the product’s level of toxicity can help you choose wisely and take the proper precautionary measures for handling and using the product.

The SIGNAL WORD must appear in large letters on the front panel of the label, immediately following the statement “Keep Out of the Reach of Children”, which also appears on all product labels.

These are the four levels of toxicity and the SIGNAL WORDS for each level.

DANGER      This word signals that the product is highly toxic.  A taste to a teaspoonful of the undiluted product, taken by mouth, could kill an average sized (175 lb.) adult.  Any product which is highly toxic, orally, dermal or through inhalation, or which causes severe eye and skin burning will be labeled  DANGER.

WARNING    This word signals that the product is moderately toxic.  As little as a teaspoon to an ounce of the undiluted product, taken by mouth, could kill an average sized (175 lb.) adult.  Any product which is moderately toxic orally, dermal or through inhalation, or causes moderate eye and skin irritation, will be labeled WARNING.

CAUTION     This word signals that the product is slightly toxic.  An ounce to a pint of the undiluted product, taken by mouth, could kill an average sized (175 lb.) adult.  Any product which is slightly toxic orally, dermal, or through inhalation, or causes slight eye and skin irritation, will be labeled  CAUTION.

NO SIGNAL WORD            The absence of a signal word indicates that the product is almost non toxic, less than lightly toxic.  Much more than a pint of undiluted product, taken by mouth, would be needed to kill an average sized (175 lb.) adult.  This also indicates that the product has little or no toxicity to dermal or inhalation poisoning and does not have much or any eye or skin irritation.

Check your storage closets, and when you shop look at the labels for the toxic level, SIGNAL WORD, for products that meet your safety and needs.  Collier Pest Control uses the most effective materials available, in the caution level or less, when servicing your home or business.  We take your safety and our environment very seriously in choosing products that is why we offer our Enviro-Care Pest Control Service.  This service offers you complete pest control service without any open pesticide spraying.  Only natural products are placed in cracks and crevices to give you comfort and protection.

If you have concerns or questions on interpreting any product you may be using.  Call, 239-455-4300, Collier Pest Control today for a complete explanation on Signal Words or any of our service, or look us up on our web site at collierpestcontrol.com.  Don’t let unwanted guests spoil your beautiful Southwest Florida lifestyle.  Remember, Florida does not have to shared with insects

BOX ELDER BUGS PEST CONTROL EXTERMINATOR NAPLES FORT MYERS BONITA SPRINGS FLORIDA

BOX ELDER BUGS

The Box Elder Bug is a nuisance in early spring because they enter homes and other buildings, often in large numbers.  Fortunately, they do not bite people and are essentially harmless to property.  These annoying bugs emerge out of their hibernated wintering sites starting the last week of March to the middle of April and can fly up to 2 miles feeding on a variety of trees and plants.  Box Elders can be found on and under trees and plants in large clusters, making the ground look blood red.  They are attracted to lights and will readily fly in open doors and windows.

The Box Elder Bugs are flat-backed, elongated, narrow, ½ inch long, 1/3 inch wide and dark brownish-black with three lengthwise red stripes on the pronotum (behind the head).  The head is black with the “beak” or proboscis reddish-orange and the long, thin, four segmented antennae, half as long as the body.  Wings are thick and leathery at the base and membranous at the tip.  There are red veins in the wings and the abdomen is bright red under the wings.

Box Elders can be controlled very easily with anything from hot water, soapy water, to a general insecticide.

ANTS CARIBBEAN CRAZY ANTS PEST CONTROL NAPLES FORT MYERS BONITA SPRINGS FLORIDA

CARIBBEAN CRAZY ANT

Also known as a Rasberry Crazy Ant

The Caribbean Crazy Ant for many years has been a nuisance to the east coast of Florida.  We now have the Caribbean Crazy Ant here in Southwest Florida.  This ant resembles a small fire ant in appearance but is harmless and does not sting or bite.  It does however, infest neighborhood with multitudes of ants that overrun homes and businesses.

The Caribbean Crazy Ant is a small golden brown to reddish brown ant with a smooth glossy body covered with tiny hairs has longer antennae, like the black crazy ant.  This ant likes to nest near the ground under objects for protection.  It has been found under palm fronds, logs, railroad ties, trees, shrubs, along sidewalks, cracks in concrete, leaves, lumber, electrical conduits, metal, mulch, and even sod.   This ant is extremely resourceful in foraging for food.  Each Caribbean Crazy Ant colony could have over 5 million or more ants and have been known to have millions of ants trail over a ½ mile from their nest for food.   They will feed on dead insects and tend honeydew producers on plants.  They also group together multiple colonies to support their nests.  This ant can infest total communities within a short period of time because of their numbers in each colony.

The control of the Caribbean Crazy Ant is not as easy as other types of ants.  First nesting sites need to be removed from the area as stated above.  Clean up all debris and items that are on or near the ground.  The nests should be located or the trails followed back to see where the nests could be located.  This ant will move their nests rapidly when disturbed.  With many millions of worker ants in each colony, a repeated insecticide spraying followed by a thorough baiting with sweet ant killing baits of all the infested area must be applied.

Collier Pest Control, Southwest Florida’s Pest Authority, offers a 3 week Caribbean Crazy Ant treatment process to control the problem for you.  Collier Pest Control will perform it’s proven “Collier Complete” pest control treatment to the inside of your home or business followed by a thorough and complete spraying treatment of all the turf, flower and mulch beds around your home or business.  We will return each week to bait the inside and retreat the outside of your home for 2 more weeks.  By this continued repetitive treatment we can get total control of the Caribbean Crazy Ant.

If you live in Naples, Fort Myers, or anywhere in Southwest Florida call for a free estimate and a complete explanation about our Caribbean Crazy Ant treatment or any of our services, or look us up on our web site at collierpestcontrol.com.  Don’t let unwanted pests spoil your beautiful Southwest Florida lifestyle.  Remember, Florida does not have to be shared with insects!

DUST MITES PEST CONTROL EXTERMINATOR FORT MYERS BONITA SPRINGS NAPLES FLORIDA

HOUSE DUST MITES

If you think our modern, well insulated house is a safe haven from all allergenic alarms, think again.  That average six room house accumulates an average of 40 pounds of dust per year.  That dust is home to millions of unseen, but troublesome Dust Mites.

The North American and European House Dust Mite is a little known and rarely mentioned group of mites.  Wherever humans and their pets live Dust Mites will be presents.  These Dust Mites will feed on skin dander deposited in beds, furniture, and carpeting.  When there are large populations of Mites are in a home.  Skin fragments and Mite fecal material become airborne causing allergic reactions like asthma and rashes.  Research has shown that the most prevalent allergen in a home is dust produced from Dust Mites.

Dust Mites are extremely small, .04 millimeters, making identification by sight impossible without the use of a microscope.  You can fit as many as 7000 on a fingernail.  They are globular in shape, and creamy white in color.  Mites have 6 legs as larva and 8 legs as nymphs and adults.  The adult female Dust Mite lays about 25 to 50 eggs a day for 30 days.  The eggs hatch and develop to adults in about one month.

People shed about 1/5 of an ounce of dander (dead skin) per week.  One gram of skin will feed thousands of mites for months.  Actually, 80 % of what you see floating in a sunbeam through a window is skin flakes.  To Dust Mites this is a Thanksgiving dinner.  Dust Mites eat skin flakes both human and animal.  Skin flakes have a fungus growing on them which is especially attractive to Dust Mites.

Dust Mites bite you and cause you to itch; they also produce allergens to which some people are very sensitive.  The Dust Mite feces contain 15 different proteins, and many people are allergic to the combination of these different proteins.

House Dust Mites inhabit damp places that are occupied by people and pets.  The House Dust Mite thrives in high humidity of 70 to 80% and warm temperatures from 68 to 84 degrees.  They are found in mattresses, pillows, in stuffed furniture, rugs, draperies, and any crack or crevice.

Dust Mites produce an allergic reaction that causes symptoms similar to asthma.   Headaches, respiratory problems, eye irritation, fatigue, and depression are other allergic reaction which can be linked to Dust Mite feces.  A 15 year old pillow could have a third of its weight in Dust Mite feces.  One ounce of dust can hold as many as 42,000 Dust Mites.

Unfortunately, studies have shown that Dust Mites can never be completely eliminated from an area, but can be suppressed for a short time.  Dust Mite populations can be reduce with a little personal effort by washing  bedding and other items in hot (130 degree) water weekly, putting your pillows in the dryer on high for 15 to 30 minutes, and do thorough household cleaning regularly. This may mean that you vacuum your furniture, draperies, and mattresses weekly and spray them with disinfectant.  Vacuuming with most conventional air bag vacuum cleaners can works against you in Dust Mite elimination, they vent dust out the exhaust and into the air again.  The use of a water trap vacuum will collect the dust in the water where it stays.  Don’t use dusters, mops, or brooms because they all merely rearrange the dust and the Dust Mites.  In extreme cases wrap your mattress and pillows in plastic and remove the draperies from the bedroom area.  Wash and clean window blinds weekly, professionally cleaning the carpet regularly or remove it all together, then wash the hard surface floors weekly, and cleaning the heating and air conditioning dusts will give added benefit.

You can help reduce House Dust Mites with a higher rated heating and air conditioning filter.  Drain treatment systems are available for your air conditioner to help stop bacteria, molds, and fungus growing from the drain pan.  E use of dehumidifiers to keep the humidity less than 50% will kill off most molds and fungus and starve the Dust Mites.  Ozone producing machines are available to kill off the fungus on skin flakes and dust to starve out Dust Mites, also.

Collier Pest Control, Southwest Florida’s Pest Authority, can help you control Dust Mites with our Dust Mite Service specially designed for Southwest Florida.  We can thoroughly broad cast spray all of your flooring, furniture, draperies, mattresses, and air conditioning ducts.  This treatment will kill all existing Dust Mites in your home and keep them from re-infesting your home for up to 60 days. This specialized treatment for Dust Mites kills the fungus on all treated areas and keeps killing fungus to keep the Dust Mites from re-infesting our home.

Don’t suffer another day with annoying Dust Mites.  If you are looking for a dependable knowledgeable exterminator and live in Naples, Fort Myers, or Southwest Florida call 239-455-4300 Collier Pest Control for a free estimate and a complete explanation on any of our services, or look us up on our web site at collierpestcontrol.com.  Don’t let unwanted guest spoil your beautiful Southwest Florida lifestyle.  Remember, Florida does not have to be shared with insects.

ANTS ODOROUS HOUSE ANT PEST CONTROL EXTERMINATOR NAPLES BONITA SPRINGS FORT MYERS FLORIDA

ODOROUS HOUSE ANT

The Odorous House Ant is a common household pest distributed nearly throughout the U.S.  This brownish to black ant is frequently confused with the argentine ant but can be easily distinguished by its darker color and the fact that the front of its abdomen overhangs and hides its flat petiole or node.  The Odorous House Ant got its name from the fact that it gives off a very characteristic, pungent, and unpleasant coconut-like odor when crushed.

The Odorous House Ant colonies may be composed of several hundred or up to 100,000 ants with many queens.  Inside these ants usually construct their nests near moisture in wall voids especially around hot water pipes and heaters, around sinks, and cupboards.  Outside they are often found in the nest of larger ants, in exposed soil, but mostly under objects like: stacked lumber, firewood, bricks, rocks, stones, or pavers.  These ants prefer sweets but also eat live and dead insects and foods with high protein content and grease such as meat and cheese.

When disturbed the Odorous House Ants run around in an erratic manner with their gaster/abdomens raised up similar to the acrobatic ant.

Control of these ants is based mainly on the success of finding the nests outdoors.  Collier Pest Control, Southwest Florida’s Pest Authority, offers an outdoor perimeter treatment that is very successful in eliminating the Odorous House Ants as well as other problem invading pests.

Call, 239-455-4300, Collier Pest Control today for a full explanation of the Odorous House Ant or any of our services, or look us up on our web site at collierpestcontrol.com.  Don’t let unwanted pests spoil your beautiful Southwest Florida’s lifestyle.  Remember Florida does not have to be shared with insects.

FICUS WHITE FLY ON HEDGES AND PLANTS PEST CONTROL EXTERMINATOR BONITA SPRINGS FORT MYERS NAPLES FLORIDA

FIG WHITEFLIES

DON’T LET FICUS FLIES DAMAGE YOUR HEDGES OR TREES

If you see your Ficus Trees or Hedge suddenly loosing its leaves or turning brown and tiny white, gnat-like, adult whiteflies fly from the foliage.  DON’T WAIT contact us quickly!  You may have the Fig White Fly attacking your Ficus.  They can defoliate your trees and hedges very quickly.  Although your ficus tree or hedge may appear to be dying after losing a lot of leaves, it may not be a goner.  If the twigs are still flexible, it may refoliate in a few weeks.  Very Important:  if you find an infestation do not pt pruning clippers in the yard waste, trash pick-up.  Don’t spread the flies to other areas of our neighborhood.  Keep the clippings in a garbage bag or in compose piles to kill the flies.

These Fig White Flies are hard to see compared to other species of whiteflies.  The body of the adult Fig Whitefly is yellow in color and the wings are white with a faint grey band towards the middle of the wing and a grey longitudinal bar on the inside of the back edge of each  of the front wings.

Ficus hedges and trees are not native to South Florida and these Fig White Flies are quickly spreading northward from Homestead since 2007.  Fortunately, these flies can be controlled.  First, you have to determine if you already have Fig Whitefly.  If not, keep monitoring your trees and hedges for early signs of an infestation, such as; leaves falling off or small gnat-like flies emerging from the foliage.

If you find signs of the Fig White Fly or wish to prevent the fly from damaging your hedges or trees, call Collier Pest Control today for a free inspection or set up treatment.  Yes, we can eliminate unwanted Fig Whiteflies from your foliage or prevent them from damaging them with our Fig White Fly Treatments.  Collier Pest Control not only will kill off all Fig White Flies on the hedges and tree but will put a special material in the soil and on the plant.  This material will absorb into the plant and any new Fig Whitefly will be killed from just biting into the plant for moisture.

Collier Pest Control offers this one time correction treatments for the Fig Whitefly. If you have been told or suspect you may have the Fig Whitefly problem or other lawn insect or fungi problems, call Collier Pest Control, 239-455-4300 for a Free Inspection or a complete explanation to any of our services.  You also can look us up on our web site at collierpestcontrol.com or Email us at info@collierpestcontrol.com.  Remember Florida does not have to be shared with insects.

SPIRALING WHITE FLY ON TREES PEST CONTROL EXTERMINATOR NAPLES FORT MYERS BONITA SPRINGS FLORIDA

Rugose Spiraling Whitefly

The Rugose Spiraling Whitefly originated in Central America.  This is not the same whitefly that is currently causing defoliation and branch dieback of ficus in South Florida.  These whiteflies are small winged insects.  They typically feed on the underside of leaves with their needle-like mouthparts.  Whiteflies can seriously injure host plants by sucking nutrients from the plant causing wilting, yellowing, stunting, leaf drop, or even death.

The Rugose Spiraling Whitefly has a very broad host range from palms to woody ornamentals and fruits.  It has been seen on gumbo limbo, black olive, copperleaf, broadleaf arrowhead, Brazilian pepper, wax myrtle, live oak, mango, and several palms.

The adults congregate on the undersides of the leaves to feed and reproduce.  The female lays here eggs in a spiral pattern on the leaves and also deposits a white, waxy substance on the eggs.  The crawler stage hatches from the eggs and crawls around before it starts to feed with its “needle-like” mouthparts.  This stage is very small and difficult to see.

The most noticeable symptoms of an infestation of this whitefly is the abundance of white, waxy material covering the leaves and also excessive black sooty mold.  The actual effect of an infestation of Rugose Spiraling Whitefly on the health of a plant is unknown; however, whiteflies in general can cause plant decline, defoliation and branch dieback.

Monitor plants for early signs of an infestation.  Small potted plants can be washed off with water.  Larger plants can be controlled with horticultural oil or insecticidal soap or most likely will need an insecticide spraying and root drenching by a professional lawn pest control company to control these whiteflies.  They will use a systemic insecticide product that can be applied directly to the infested plant or the soil.

Collier Pest Control, Southwest Florida’s Pest Authority, will treat each infected tree with the appropriate materials by root feeding and by direct contact.  These materials will protect each tree for a period of 6 months after application.

If you suspect a problem with the Rugose Spiraling Whitefly or any other insect call our office, 239-455-4300, for a complete explanation on any of our services, or look us up on our web site at collierpestcontrol.com Remember Florida does not have to be shared with insects.

TERMITE DRYWOOD SPOT TREATMENT PEST CONTROL EXTERMINATOR BONITA SPRINGS FORT MYERS NAPLES FLORIDA

TERMITE SPOT TREATMENT

Sometimes a thorough inspection indicates only a small number of termite infested areas, such as a door casing, windowsill, or piece of furniture.  If the infestation appears to be limited and accessible, a localized (spot) treatment may provide satisfactory results.  Such treatments are less costly and more convenient than whole-structure treatments (tenting).

Wood injection or drill and treat applications have been used since the 1920’s to treat Drywood, and other types of termite infestations which are accessible and detectable.  This is the simplest and most direct method of treatment.

Once an area is determined, the infested wood is drilled with small holes directly into the galleries of the termite colonies.  The number of holes drilled depends on the extent of the infestation.   Controlling materials are then injected into the holes so as to kill the termite galleries.  Dusts, liquids, foams, and baits are now available for this purpose to be injected into the drilled holes to come in contact with the termites in the galleries.

Collier Pest Control offers free termite inspects to determine if you have a termite infestation in your home or building.  Call, 239-455-4300, for more information on termites and how to protect your home against them, or you can look us up on our web site at collierpestcontrol.com, filled with information about all of Florida’s problem pests.  Remember Florida does not have to be shared with insects.

ANTS HONEY ANT PEST CONTROL EXTERMINATOR BONITA SPRINGS FORT MYERS NAPLES FLORIDA

SMALL HONEY ANT

This small ant is only an occasional pest inside structures.  They do not regularly build colonies within homes or businesses.  Small Honey Ants build their colonies in the open shaded areas of your lawn, under concrete slabs, under stones, and landscaping beds.  They are very cold tolerant, foraging in temperatures just above freezing, and decreases with temperatures above 60 to 75 degrees.

These small, 1/16 to 1/8 inch, yellowish to blackish brown ants look similar to small crazy ants with legs very long in relation to body size.  They are very fond of honeydew and will tend honeydew producing insects such as aphids.  They also feed on live and dead insects, juices of overripened fruits, and will extract the sap or juice from flower buds and plant shoots.

If found inside a structure, follow the trailing ants back to the point where they exit the wall and then look on the outside of that wall for their trails.  Follow the trails back to where they enter the ground.  Look for crater shaped mounds on the dirt near and away from the foundation of the building.

These ants may only be seen outside, but if you see them inside or a nuisance to you outside, call 239-455-4300 for a complete explanation about the Small Honey Ant or any of our services, or look us up on our web site at collierpestcontrol.com.  Don’t let unwanted insect guests spoil your beautiful Southwest Florida Lifestyle. ROACHES ASIAN COCKROACHES PEST CONTROL EXTERMINATOR BONITA SPRINGS FORT MYERS NAPLES FLORIDA

ASIAN COCKROACHES

Collier Pest Control is your Southwest Florida Pest Authority, including the Asian Cockroach.  The Asian Cockroach was recently introduced into Florida as a new species in 1986.  It has spread over at least one third of the state, from the center of Florida to Collier County and Southwest Florida.

The Asian Roach is a rural and suburban pest that mainly infests single family, suburban houses and yards.  The Asian Roach is abundant outdoors, where populations of 30,000 to 250,000 per acre have been found.  The adults are strong fliers and can fly up to 120 feet in a single flight.

Adult Asian Roaches take flight even during the day if disturbed.  At dusk there is a frenzy of activity when adults are active in grass and mulch. These active pests invade any opening in a house, such as a lighted doorway or window.  Once inside, they crawl on illuminated television screens and walls while the lights are on during the evening.

The Asian Roach is almost identical in appearance to the German cockroach.  Many people confuse this outdoor pest with the most common of indoor infestations, the German Roach.  The wings of the Asian Roach are usually longer and are lighter brown in color than most German Roaches.  Asian Roaches are found mostly outdoors but can be seen inside around windows, doors, illuminated lighting and away from food areas.  The German Roach is always found inside and around food areas.  The female Asian Roach can produce an egg capsule with 40 eggs every 28 days.  The nymphs will mature to adults in about 6 to 7 weeks.

Collier Pest Control can control these outdoor pests with our “Collier Complete” pest control service.  We can thoroughly treat all your inside cracks and crevices and complete the service with a broadcast spraying of the eaves, soffits, flower beds, entry ways, and 5 to 10 feet perimeter around your home.

ANTS ACROBAT ANT PEST CONTROL EXTERMINATOR BONITA SPRINGS FORT MYERS NAPLES FLORIDA

ACROBAT  ANTS

Acrobat Ants get their name from the habit of holding their abdomens above their thorax when disturbed.  There are several different species of these ants found throughout the United States.  They are not normally found inside homes, but many wander inside form time to time in search of food or when there is moisture damaged wood in a building.

The primary contributing condition involved in Acrobat Ant infestations inside or outside are dead wood and areas of high moisture.  Any water leaks which are present must be corrected.  Clogged gutters can attract Acrobat Ants.  Soffit areas that are poorly ventilated may need additional vents installed to increase ventilation.  Acrobat Ants also may be found in decayed or partially decayed wood beneath stones, in stumps, in hollow cavities, under leaf litter, around door and window frames, wall voids, woodwork, skylights, etc.  These ants sometimes use tree limbs or power lines to enter your home.  In recent years, Acrobat Ants have been found building nests in the foam insulating board, called sheathing, located behind the siding of homes.  Any construction flaw will allow this tiny, .017 inch ant long, light brown to black ant access to your home.  In fact, these ants will nest in wood already damaged by other insects.  In one case, these ants were found trailing along the sidewalk, 100 feet from a tree, to an office building.  These ants then crawled up six floors of the building and entered on each floor.  When Acrobat Ants are allowed to grow large colonies the workers are more aggressive and sting you, or animals, if disturbed.  But, when the Acrobat Ant colony is small the worker ants are timid and don’t usually sting when disturbed.

Acrobat Ants feed on a wide variety of foods including live and dead insects and the sweet honeydew produce by insects such as aphids.  Inside buildings, they will feed on sweets as often as they will feed on foods containing protein.

Eliminating the Acrobat Ant takes a combination of removing the moisture hiding areas where they are nesting and treatment of traditional pest control techniques with injection spraying and baits.

CONENOSE BLOOD SUCKING CONENOSE PEST CONTROL EXTERMINATOR BONITA SPRINGS FORT MYERS NAPLES FLORIDA

BLOOD SUCKING CONENOSE

THE KISSING BUG

Also known as the Kissing Bug, the Conenose bug gets it’s name from their cone-shaped head and they feed at night on the human face.  Adult Conenose Bugs are brown to black with a strikingly orange or red markings on perimeter of their abdomen and get from ½ to 1 inch long.

There are two species most commonly encountered in the U.S., they are Bloodsucking Conenose and the Western Bloodsucking Conenose.  These two species are less associated with human contact than those in Central and South America. The Blood Sucking Conenose is attracted to lights at night and can be a serious pest around lighted swimming pools.  The non-painful bite of this insect can for some people result in an allergic reaction that can include nausea, heart palpitation, breathlessness, and violent itching. Conenose behave like bed bugs in that they live and deposit their eggs in cracks and crevices in and around man-made structures, hollow trees inhabited by vertebrates such as raccoons and opossums or rats, and then emerge at night to feed upon their sleeping hosts.  These insects bite people more or less by accident, they primary attack domestic animals, live stock and poultry.

The Conenose is the main vector or carrier of the Chagas’ disease that mainly occurs in Mexico, Central and South America, and on certain Caribbean Islands.  When in contact with their victim these bugs will defecate while feeding.  If the feces are infected with the parasite, the organisms can gain entry into the body by being scratched or rubbed into the bite or other break in the skin, which can cause the Chagas’ disease.

There is 4 major steps to controlling the Bloodsucking Conenose if you are encountered with an infestation.  First insect proof your home by sealing all cracks and crevices, window frames, and door frames.  Then remove all outside Conenose attractants such as squirrel dens, bird nests, and any other animal harborages, followed by a thorough pesticide application to the inside and exterior of your home.  Finally, continued personal protection by being aware of all infested areas, and moving your furniture and bedding at least 1 foot from the wall.

If you live in Naples, Fort Myers, or anywhere in Southwest Florida and see The Bloodsucking Conenose and wish to have more information about it, call 239-455-4300, Collier Pest Control, Southwest Florida’s Pest Authority, or look us up on our web site at collierpestcontrol.com.  Remember Florida does not have to shared with insects.

SNAKES PEST CONTROL EXTERMINATOR BONITA SPRINGS FORT MYERS NAPLES FLORIDA

SNAKES

There is an abundance of wildlife including a wide variety of retiles. Snakes, and their cousins the alligators, crocodiles, turtles and lizards, play an interesting and vital role in Florida’s complex ecology. There are about 45 species of snakes living in Florida, with only 6 that are venomous, and only a few of them are home to us in Southwest Florida. So, that leaves 39 species that are non-venomous and harmless, unless you break your leg or neck trying to get away from one.

Many people have an uncontrollable fear of snakes. Whatever the reason for disfavor, all snakes are beneficial to the balance of life and the animal kingdom. They eat insects, rats, mice, worms, toads, frogs, fish and some, like the Indigos and Kingsnakes, eat other snakes including venomous ones. They all help keep the ecosystem they live in at a good balance.

Florida snakes are not aggressive and, unless they are cornered, most will flee when humans approach. If you find a snake and you do not know whether or not it is venomous, here’s word of caution. Do not catch a snake and do not handle one unless you are sure it is not venomous. Occasionally, you might encounter a snake that is reluctant to leave because it is basking in the sun to get warm.

Among most snakebite victims, an unacceptably high number are bitten on the hands and arms when they are handling a snake. It is also known that after a snake has been killed, its reflexes may continue to work. Those reflexes typically cause the body to writhe slowly for awhile, but they can cause a convulsive contraction and the snake can still bite you. Do not handle a freshly killed snake.

The only acceptable treatment for venomous snake bite involves the use of antivenin. So, if you or someone you are with is bitten by a venomous snake, seek immediate medical attention at the nearest hospital or medical facility. Stay as calm as you can, remove any rings that could restrict circulation if your tissue swells; keep the bitten area of your body below the level of your heart.

Because snakes occupy a variety of habitats, it is generally impossible nor would it generally be desirable to eliminate the snake population in an area. If a snake pest is killed or removed from an area, it is likely that more snakes will eventually reoccupy the area, as long as the area remains attractive to snakes. The most effective control of snakes is to remove as much snake harborage as possible to make the area unattractive for new snakes to inhabit. Areas such as woodpiles, rock piles, scattered debris, tall grass, thick foliage, and any area a snake could hide. A good rodent control will also help to reduce the snake problems, as rodents make up much of the diet of many snakes, especially the poisonous ones.

The control of snakes is limited since there is no registered chemical or baits to kill or control snakes. There has been some limited success in trapping some types of snakes.

Collier Pest Control, Southwest Florida’s Pest Authority, does offer a Snake Repellant Treatment to keep unwanted snakes from entering an area for a limited period of time. Yes, we can apply our specialized snake repellant 30 to 40 feet away from and around your home or business to repel and keep problem snakes from crossing the line of repellant material to be a pest to your family and pets.

If you live in Naples, Fort Myers, or anywhere in Southwest Florida call Collier Pest Control for a free estimate and a complete explanation on our Snake Repellant Treatment or any of our services, or look us up on our web site at collierpestcontrol.com. Don’t let unwanted pests spoil your beautiful Southwest Florida lifestyle. Remember, Florida does not have to be shared with pests!

CRICKETS PEST CONTROL EXTERMINATOR BONITA SPRINGS FORT MYERS NAPLES FLORIDA

CRICKETS

The common name “House Cricket” comes from the fact that thee crickets often enter houses where they can survive indefinitely. Having been introduced from Europe, this species is found throughout the United States but is a pest primarily east of the Rocky Mountains.  Crickets are nocturnal or active at night and usually hide in dark warm places during the day. Their presence is indicated by the male’s chirping with is done y rubbing their front wings together.  His chirping serves to attract females.

Outside, they are often attracted to electric lights in large numbers. When present in large numbers, crickets are a considerable annoyance and if inside can cause damage to some fabrics, such as wood, cotton, linens, rayon, and furs.  They will attack paper, all kinds of foods, and even rubber.  Outside, they feed on plants and dead or live insects, including other crickets.

Crickets are closely related to cockroaches, their young look like adults except their wings are not fully developed.  The House Cricket lives primarily outdoors and especially in garbage dumps, but may invade houses.  They are omnivorous, eating or drinking almost anything that is available.

Control or elimination of Crickets frequently involves treatment of both inside and outside the structure, as well as removal of breeding and feeding sites outdoors like weeding plant beds, removing woodpiles, and mowing lawns near the structure, and use of tight-fitting screens and doors.  Appropriate labeled pesticides applied to the moist, areas outdoors and well and as a indoor treatment will help control crickets.

SPIRALING WHITE FLY ON PALMS PEST CONTROL EXTERMINATOR BONITA SPRINGS FORT MYERS NAPLES FLORIDA

ANTS FLORIDA CARPENTER ANT PEST CONTROL EXTERMINATOR BONITA SPRINGS FORT MYERS NAPLES FLORIDA

FLORIDA CARPENTER ANT

FED UP!  Tired of seeing Carpenter Ants in your home?  Sick of spraying those awful smelling insecticides? Trying to kill off what seems to be a never ending army of silent invaders?

NO PROBLEM! Collier Pest Control, Southwest Florida’s Pest Authority, has a  highly developed method of Carpenter Ant Control that can rid you of your nightly aggravations.  As the population of Florida continues to grow and building development extends into previously undisturbed land, ant and insect sightings in homes are on the rise.

The Florida Carpenter Ant is a large ant, up to ½ inch long, with its head and thorax brown, and abdomen black.  The reputation of this ant being a house wrecker is all fable.  The Florida Carpenter Ant does not eat wood, as termites do.  They will, however, excavate galleries in previously damaged wood from moisture, termites, or dry rot.  The Florida Carpenter Ant feeds on honeydew produced from aphids, other insects, and household scraps.

The Florida Carpenter Ant nests in the ground beneath root systems, rotting logs, tree stumps, mulch beds, tree cavities or any moisture area.  These ants foliage indoors for water, food, or to form a satellite colony. This satellite colony is a secondary colony to support the main colony.

Collier Pest Control will control these swiftly moving nocturnal pests by eliminating the satellite colonies in your home, killing other colonies around your home and applying carpenter ant repealing materials to keep all unwanted guests from returning to your home.

If you live in Naples, Fort Myers, or Southwest Florida call 239-455-4300 Collier Pest Control today for an estimate and a complete explanation on how this new method of Carpenter Ant treatment will work for you, or look us up on our web site at collierpestcontrol.com..  Don’t let unwanted guests spoil your beautiful Southwest Florida lifestyle.  Remember, Florida does not have to be shared with insects!

CRAZY ANTS

Ants can be a nuisance here in Southwest Florida and one of the most persistent pest problems is the Crazy Ant.  This is a small brown to black ant about 1/10th inch long with a tremendous amount of energy.  The Crazy Ant got named from the habit of running about very erratically with no apparent sense of direction.  They are sometimes recognized by their extremely long legs and antennae out of proportion to the other parts of their body.  This unusual feature is a good identifying characteristic.

The Crazy Ant is found in the ground, dead logs, fence posts, hollow trees, mulch, potted plants, small cracks, crevices and voids inside structures, and wanders throughout the building searching for food.  The Crazy ant is very adaptable of nesting habits.  They will nest in both moist and relatively dry environments.  They prefer to feed on animal mater, grease and other insects, but will readily eat sweets, of all kinds.  The workers will forage up to 100 feet or more from the colony in search of food.

Each colony contains numerous queens.  The Crazy Ant colony is very mobile and will move from one site to a new site if conditions become unfavorable.  New colonies are produced by budding or splitting apart.  Budding occurs when one or more queens and a group of workers split away from the original colony to form a new colony.

Treating or controlling Crazy Ants consists of three steps.  First, is to correct any condition contributing to the infestation, such as excess moisture. Then, is locating and treating existing colonies, using baits and spray insecticides.  Finally, is to establish barriers of residual insecticide around the structure to try to prevent new Crazy Ants from entering the building.

Patience will normally results in success.  Locations of the colonies are important, but if they cannot be found, baiting and a perimeter treatment will give a temporary relief of the problem.  Your cooperation in locating the colonies is a key element to the success of this treatment.

SCORPIONS

Collier Pest Control is your Southwest Florida Pest Authority, including Scorpions.  Here in Southwest Florida we mostly see the Common Striped Scorpion.  It has 2 broad dark bands extending the length of the back on a yellowish brown body.  They usually grow to 1 ½ inches and normally live outdoors and only invade homes foraging for food.  They can live 3 to 5 years.

Scorpions are flattened, crab like animals having 10 legs and a fleshy tail.  They have an upturned up stinger at the end of their tail.  There are over 1200 species of scorpions, but only 20 to 30 types are in the United States.  They are unique as they do not lay eggs and their young are born alive.  After they are born, the mother will carry them until their first molt.  Scorpions are most active at night hiding under boards, bark, rubbish, buildings of the ground, debris, under foliage growth, and palm fronds.

Scorpion’s sting!  But, only sting when provoked or disturbed.  The sting of the Common Striped Scorpion is painful but not dangerous to our health except for those persons who exhibit allergic reactions to insect stings.  Normally, strong ammonia will help the pain and icing the sting will keep the swelling down. There have been no deaths from Scorpion stings in Florida.

Scorpions have poor eye sight and being nocturnal and predaceous, they feed on insects, spiders, or small animal wildlife.  They do not stalk their prey, but wait to grab it alive with their pinchers.

TICKS BROWN DOG TICKS PEST CONTROL EXTERMINATOR FORT MYERS BONITA SPRINGS NAPLES FLORIDA

TICK SERVICE

Collier Pest Control is Southwest Florida’s Pest Control Authority.  We are specialist’s in general household pest and termite control. Our approach to tick control is not just with surface sprays.  Collier Pest Control developed a complete thorough Tick Treatment that treats your complete house and every place your pet is active; all the cracks and crevices, voids, windows and door casings, furniture, baseboards, and rugs.

The Brown Dog Tick is the most common tick here in beautiful Southwest Florida.  The Brown Dog Tick does not vector any disease, such as Lyme disease or Rocky Mountain spotted fever.  Ticks are a serious problem and can cause major health problems if allowed to infest your living area.  Ticks are not an insect and are closely related to the spider.  Adult ticks have 8 legs, insects only have 6 legs.  All ticks are parasitic and feed on the blood of animals.  Most ticks spend the majority of their life on or near the ground waiting for a suitable host to come attach themselves on.  Ticks will climb onto an appropriate object, such as a tall blade of grass, bush, fence post, side of a building to wait for a host to pass by. The Brown Dog Tick can live for as long as 200 days without a blood meal.

The female Brown Dog Tick can lay a mass of 1000 to 3000 eggs. These eggs will hatch in 19 to 60 days into a 6 legged, small, immature seed tick. Within 3 to 6 days it will molt and change into an 8 legged nymph tick.  After a blood meal from a host, this nymph will molt in 12 to 29 days into an adult tick.

If you find a tick attached to you or a family member never just pull it off the skin.  A tick is easily removed by first touching the tick with a warm butter knife or alcohol to get it to remove its head from the skin. Then grab the tick and lift it off the skin.

Don’t be over whelmed with a tick infestation in your home.
