                The Florida Midge emerge from lakes in astronomical numbers, covering walls of homes, and forming heaps of wispy corpses under outdoor lights.  They are sometimes called blind mosquitoes because when their multitudes are disturbed in their resting places on lake shore sedges, they rise up with a mosquito-like whine and fly clumsily away among the vegetation, as to recognize a good meal when it walks into their back yard.  Actually, Midges do not feed during their short life of a day or two.  Since they do not feed they do not bite as adult mosquitoes.     

 This is time enough for myriads of them to vanish down the gullets of swallows, dragonflies, and fish.

The larva of the Midge lives in the mud of lakes and low water areas where each constructs a small open-ended tube. Through which they draw a little stream of water from which they remove algae and microscopic debris.  They act as the filter for our lakes and low water areas.  90% of all Midge activity takes place just before sundown.

            Control of the Midge is limited to reducing the lights around lakes and low water areas, stocking bodies of water with carp and goldfish, adding insect growth regulators to bodies of water, and light traps around the same bodies of water.

            Centipedes are very common here in Southwest Florida.  Sometimes confused with millipedes do not damage food or furnishings in your home. Centipedes are identified by having one pair of legs per body segment compared with millipedes that have two pair of legs per body segment and are usually brownish, flattened animals.  Centipedes are fast runners and grow to a length from 1 to 6 inches.  Centipedes have an appendage at the rear of their body that looks like a singer.  It is not, this appendage is designed for the Centipede to hold it’s pray until it can eat it. 

Centipedes have poorly developed eyes and are most active at night.  They are active predators and feed mainly on insects and spiders.  All centipedes have venom glands to immobilize their prey.  The jaws of the smaller local species cannot penetrate human skin; however the larger species may inflict painful bites.  This is how they catch their food source which is spiders, small live insects and their larva.

            Centipedes live humid damp dark places such as under stones, leaf litter, logs, bark, ground cover and debris.  If they invade your home the Centipede could be found most likely in closets, bathrooms, and kitchen areas.

            Centipedes usually lay 15 to 55 eggs clustered together in the soil but sometimes they are laid singly.  The eggs hatch soon after they are deposited.  The female will usually guard the newly hatched young.  Young Centipedes closely resemble the adult and require 3 years to mature.  Centipedes are rather long-lived and individuals may live up to 6 years.

          Here in Southwest Florida the Brown Dog Tick is the most common tick found.  It is unusual among ticks, in that it can complete its entire life cycle indoors.  Infestations in houses can explode to very high levels quickly. A female tick can lay from 1,000 to 3,000 egg.  The eggs hatch in 19 to 60 days into six-legged, small larvae known as “seed ticks.” Adults have been known to live for as long as 200 days without a blood meal. The Brown Dog Tick rarely causes disease in humans; only a few cases are known. In dogs, symptoms of canine ehrlichiosis include lameness and fever; those for babesiosis include fever, anorexia and anemia. Both have been found in Florida.

          Typically, a few ticks are brought into the house or kennel. The early stages of the infestation, when only a few individuals are present, are often missed completely. The first indication the dog owner has that there is a problem is when they start noticing ticks crawling up the walls or curtains!

Simple measures can be taken to provide a tick-free environment.  Keep the grass mowed, remove all the leaf litter, brush, and weeds at the edge of the lawn, trim tree branches and shrubs around the edge of the lawn, and manage pet activity by trying to keep cats and dogs out of the woods and in a contained area.             The Plaster Bag Worm is similar in appearance and closely related to clothes moths.    This unique looking creature is easily seen on light colored walls.  Close examination of the house may reveal bagworms attached to the underside of chairs, bookcases, and other furniture.  They are often found along the edge of rugs, near baseboards, or on the lower edges of walls.  Bagworms are quite common in garages and underneath buildings.  This larva mainly feed on spider webs; however, they will also feed on fabrics made of natural fiber

The larva of bagworms lives in a flatten gray, watermelon seed shaped case about ½ inch long.  The case is constructed of silken fiber and sand particles, lint, paint fragments, and other debris attached.  The case has a slit like opening at each end, and the larva is able to move around and feed from either end.

Control of the Plaster Bagworm Larva is similar to control of clothes moths.  Good housekeeping is important, especially the removal of spider webs.  Sweep down and remove any spider webs and Plaster Bagworm casings.

                Honey Bees get their name from the sweet yellowish to brownish fluid they make from the nectar of flowers and use as food.  Honey Bees not only provide honey and wax, but as pollinators are of far greater importance.  They are responsible for a large share of insect stings, although many stings blamed on bees are actually done by yellowjackets.  More people die of allergic reaction to Bee stings than of rattle snake bites each year.  Bees can only sting you once.  When stinging them pull away and leave the back half of their abdomen, with the poison sack and the stinger imbedded in your skin.  This action kills s the insect that stung you.  This poison sack can continue to inject poison into your body for a few minutes after the sting.  They are best controlled at night using dusts and contact sprays.  Queen Bees lay as many as 1,500 to 2000 eggs per day, and may live as long as 5 years.  Worker Bees only live 5 to 7 weeks in the summer and shorter during the winter

INFORMATION ABOUT FLEAS

            Fleas are pest to humans and their domestic animals all over the world.  While most fleas prefer non-human hosts, many can and do feed on humans when infestations are heavy or when other hosts are not readily available.

                Fleas are small, wingless parasitic insects that are extremely well adapted to their environment.  The first step toward effective control is recognizing two very important factors.  First, the 4 stages of the flea life cycle (egg, larva, pupa, and adult) have to be broken or stopped.  Second, the flea population must be controlled everywhere it exists, on the pet, inside the home, and out in the yard.

                1.  THE EGG STAGE

                The eggs are laid loosely and singly on the host.  The eggs are not sticky so when the host shakes, scratches, or moves around the eggs will be deposited in all areas where the hosts rest, sleeps, and is active.

                2.  THE LARVAL STAGE

                Flea larva is whitish, legless, and worm like.  Unlike adult fleas, the larvae are free living (non-parasitic) with chewing mouth parts and feed on material available in their environment.   It is necessary for successful development of the larva to feed on organic debris and the adult flea excrement containing dried blood which composes the main diet of the flea larva. Larvae are more sensitive to temperature and humidity than the eggs.  Low humidity, less than 50%, is fatal for flea larvae.  The larval period normally lasts 7-15 days, but can be as long as several months if the environment is less favorable.

                3.  THE PUPAL STAGE

                Unlike the egg and larval stage, the pupa stage is very resilient to harsh conditions.  The cocoon serves to protect the pupa from predators and also acts as a barrier against insecticides.  Within the cocoon the pupa changes into a pre-emerged adult flea.  Adults will emerge from the pupa case in 5-7 days under favorable conditions.  In adverse conditions, the pupae and pre-emerged adults can lay quiet within the cocoon for up to a full year.   Flea emergence can be stimulated by body warmth of the host and the pressure made by a host walking on the pre-emerged adult within the cocoon, increased temperatures and mechanical disturbances.

                4.  THE ADULT STAGE

                The adult flea has well developed legs for jumping.  Adults have piercing-sucking mouth parts and are usually ready to take a blood meal, their only source of food, 24-48 hours after emerging from the cocoon.  Adult fleas spend 90% of their life on the host and feed many times a day.  On average, the female flea lays 15-20 eggs per day for the 10-14 days that she is fertile.

                For an effective flea program to stop any re-infestation of fleas in all areas, the pet, the home, and the yard must be treated.  Pets drop flea eggs anywhere at any time.  After hatching, the flea larva then can migrate to dark low traffic areas where food is available.  All stages of the flea can be carried throughout the house in the laundry, on people or on their clothing.  Also, if the infested pet frequently travels in the family vehicle it may be necessary to treat the vehicle as well.  Outdoor treatment is also necessary when the pets are allowed outside.

                Although nearly all adult fleas present at the time of service will be controlled, don’t be alarmed if you see some fleas within a few days to three weeks after treatment.  These are newly emerged adults from the cocoon of the pupa stage.  If these conditions are present after treatment, control the new adults on the pet with bathing or a pet flea insecticide.  Any flea prevention program must include regular grooming and bathing of the pet.  If the pet is not being treated regularly, you could see constant sighting of fleas.  Your home and your yard would not be re-infested but your pet would be infested.

            Adult humpback flies can be found in unsanitary places.  They can transport various disease-causing organisms to food materials.  They can even be found in human corpses in morgues, mortuaries, and mausoleums. This fly is a great concern in health-care facilities because of their unsanitary habits, and because larvae have been found in open wounds of patients.

            The larvae breed in a wide variety of moist decaying organic matter which includes dung, fungi, and decaying plant material.  In offices, overwatered potted plants are often the source.  They also have been found in unusual places including a tin of boot polish, a pot of glue paint, and a bucket of animal-based glue.

            The key to eliminating Humpback Flies is to find their breeding sources, all of them, and removing the organic material in drains, under refrigeration equipment, remove slabs for broken pipes under slabs and repair, residual pesticides are rarely if ever required for the control of phorid flies (humpback flies), but after breeding sources have been removed, a non residual pesticide can be used to kill the adults present.

SWARMING TERMITES

During the spring of each year, the termites produce a winged alate (Swarmer).  The purpose of the swarmer is to fly up into the air, find the opposite sex, mate, and start new colonies.   Both the male and the female break off their wings and look for a suitable nesting area.  In the forest, this would be a dead, damp decaying tree on the forest floor.  When they swarm into the home, in most cases, they cannot damage the home or start a nest as the area is much too dry. So unless you have a wet, rotten log in your living room, the alates cannot hurt you.   Our experience has shown that there are normally three swarms.  The first swarm is the major one, the second swarm is often 1/10th in size, and the last swarm is normally just a few insects.  Subterranean termites normally avoid light.  When swarmers are created by the colony, the opposite happens.  The swarmers are attracted to light when they emerge, and are often found in window sills.   As they come out in large numbers, they can be an awful nuisance.  Try not to spray them with common household insecticides, as these products contain oils that can stain and make a mess.  The easiest way to remove these alates is to vacuum them up.  They will die shortly in the dry environment of the vacuum bag.  Often, these swarmers will emerge within 30-60- days AFTER A HOME HAS BEEN TREATED. This is a defensive measure by the colony.  The colony is under stress from the treatment and will often respond by sending the remaining swarmers out.

TERMITES DRYWOOD TERMITE PEST CONTROL EXTERMINATOR NAPLES BONITA SPRINGS FORT MYERS FLORIDA

DRYWOOD TERMITES

                Drywood Termites as well as other termites dwell in Florida.  Drywood Termites infest dry wood and do not require contact with the soil.  Other types of termites need to nest in the soil in order to survive. 

                Drywood Termites are a social insect that live in colonies.  The colonies are composed of kings, queens and soldiers.  There is no worker caste of termite as in other types of termites. The work or foraging for food is done by the immature termites before they become adults.  These nymphs, the immature termites, which are most numerous castes, are white and wingless.  Kings and Queens Termites perform the reproductive function of the colony.  They are light to dark brown and 1/3 to one inch in length.  The Soldiers guard the colony against invaders such as ants.  They are white and wingless with large brownish heads and jaws.  The soldiers and immature remain inside the wood at all times.

                Drywood Termites are more common along coastal areas, although they are also found inland.  Drywood Termite food consists of cellulose obtained from wood.  Infestations of Drywood Termites may be found in almost any product containing cellulose.  They are most commonly found infesting attics, window sills, door frames, woodwork in buildings and furniture.

                Detecting Drywood Termites infestations may be noticed in several ways.  One way is during the early months of the year.  Drywood Termite Kings and Queens emerge from the colonies as swarms.  The purpose of these swarms is to establish new colonies.  The appearance of winged termites in the home is an indication of probable infestation; however, they may have come in from outside.  Swarming termites are attracted to light.  Swarming termites may be found around window sills or lights.  Shortly after emerging from the colony, swarming termites land and lose their wings.  If the swarming termites do not find a suitable nesting area, they will die.

                A common way to detect Drywood Termites is that Drywood Termites unlike other types of termites excrete pellets of partly digested wood.  These pellets are straw-colored to reddish brown and about the size of sand.  The pellets are pushed from the galleries and found on are surfaces beneath the infested wood.

An experienced eye can detect Drywood Termites in an advanced stage of infestation from surface blistering.  Drywood Termites sometimes tunnel close to the surface giving the wood a blistered appearance. 

                Preventative measures for the Drywood Termite is limited at best.  Any opening to windows and attics should be screened.  Any cracks or voids should be caulked or filled with wood filler.  The use of termite resistant woods such as Redwood, Bald Cypress, Mahogany, Spanish cedar, and commercial pressure treated wood will resist Drywood Termites for several years until weathering makes it susceptible to infestation.

ANTS SMALL HONEY ANT PEST CONTROL EXTERMINATOR NAPLES BONITA SPRINGS FORT MYERS FLORIDA

SMALL HONEY ANT

            This small ant is only an occasional pest inside structures.  They do not regularly build colonies within homes or businesses.  Small Honey Ants build their colonies in the open shaded areas of your lawn, under concrete slabs, under stones, and landscaping beds.  They are very cold tolerant, foraging in temperatures just above freezing, and decreases with temperatures above 60 to 75 degrees.

            These small, 1/16 to 1/8 inch, yellowish to blackish brown ants look similar to small crazy ants with legs very long in relation to body size.  They are very fond of honeydew and will tend honeydew producing insects such as aphids.  They also feed on live and dead insects, juices of overripened fruits, and will extract the sap or juice from flower buds and plant shoots.

            If found inside a structure, follow the trailing ants back to the point where they exit the wall and then look on the outside of that wall for their trails.  Follow the trails back to where they enter the ground.  Look for crater shaped mounds on the dirt near and away from the foundation of the building.

                        Collier Pest Control is your Southwest Florida Pest Authority including Stored Food Product Pests.  There are several different types of Food Product Pests in Southwest Florida.  The most common are flour beetles, saw-toothed grain beetles, cigarette and drug store beetles, weevils, grain moths, Indian and Mediterranean flour moths, and psocids.

                Most of the Stored Food Product Pests in Florida can reproduce quickly all year. It is very unsettling to open a brand new package of something just to find it infested with insects.  How did they get into that package?  The answer is that they were in the package when the food product was processed at the factory.  Then when the age, humidity, and temperature of the food product get just right the insects hatch out. From the infested food packages, the pests may spread to other exposed food.

                These Food Product Pests are usually found living in dried fruit, spices, flour, bran,  dried vegetables, dried flowers, grains, milled cereal products, dried dog and cat food, nuts, candy, pasta, grits, cake mixes, and other similar processed dried or grain products.

                The first step in controlling Food Product Pests is to locate the source of the infestation.  All susceptible foods should be thoroughly inspected and infested items be discarded.  You need to take the time to go through the pantry and inspect those items in question. 

                Insects in infested foods may be killed by heat or cold if the item is of value and need to be saved.  Invested foods may be placed in an oven at 130 degrees for 30 minutes or into a freezer at 0 degrees for 4 days to kill live insects and their eggs.  If insects are out of the food package and active, you can vacuum or dry wipe up all insects and wash the area with warm soapy water. If insects reappear after you have inspected and discarded infested food items take the time to re-inspect and discard any new infested items and look for the source of the problem.

THE FLORIDA PALMETTO BUG

                The real facts are there is no such thing as a Palmetto Bug.  The American cockroach is the first to be labeled a Palmetto Bug.  The American Roach is the largest of the common roach species at about 1 ½ inches long, reddish brown in color, with fully developed wings.  This large bug seldom flies but is capable of gliding long distances.  Each female American Roach can develop an egg capsule of 15 eggs every week.

                Another villain, recently, to be named the Palmetto Bug is the Australian Cockroach.  This roach is similar in appearance, size, and color.  This startling pest has distinguished yellow military type lieutenant strips along the outer front of either wing. This strong flier has a prominent bat shaped dark spot in the center of the pronotum, the area just behind the head.  This Australian Roach can develop an egg capsule with 15 eggs every 10 days.

                Both the American and the Australian Roach are primary outside pests.  During periods of cold, extreme hot and dry weather, or excessive rainfall they will try to enter buildings foraging for food.  Both are found living outdoors in landscape, tree trucks, under rocks, around drainpipes, and any place moisture and shelter will protect them.

Rugose Spiraling White Fly

 

The Rugose Spiraling Whitefly originated in Central America.  This is not the same whitefly that is currently causing defoliation and branch dieback of ficus in South Florida.  These whiteflies are small winged insects.  They typically feed on the underside of leaves with their needle-like mouthparts.  Whiteflies can seriously injure host plants by sucking nutrients from the plant causing wilting, yellowing, stunting, leaf drop, or even death.

The Rugose Spiraling Whitefly has a very broad host range from palms to woody ornamentals and fruits.  It has been seen on gumbo limbo, black olive, copperleaf, broadleaf arrowhead, Brazilian pepper, wax myrtle, live oak, mango, and several palms.

The adults congregate on the undersides of the leaves to feed and reproduce.  The female lays here eggs in a spiral pattern on the leaves and also deposits a white, waxy substance on the eggs.  The crawler stage hatches from the eggs and crawls around before it starts to feed with its “needle-like” mouthparts.  This stage is very small and difficult to see.

The most noticeable symptoms of an infestation of this whitefly are the abundance of white, waxy material covering the leaves and also excessive black sooty mold.  The actual effect of an infestation of Rugose Spiraling Whitefly on the health of a plant is unknown; however, whiteflies in general can cause plant decline, defoliation and branch dieback.

Monitor plants for early signs of an infestation.  Small potted plants can be washed off with water.  Larger plants can be controlled with horticultural oil or insecticidal soap or most likely will need an insecticide spraying and root drenching by a professional lawn pest control company to control these whiteflies.  They will use a systemic insecticide product that can be applied directly to the infested plant or the soil.

THE CICADA KILLER

 

                The Cicada Killer Wasp gets its name from the fact it hunts and puts a cicada in each of its nests as food for its young (larva).  The Cicada Killer is an ominous looking wasp that flies around homes and business in the spring and early summer being a nuisance.  Many people think this is a very large Yellowjacket.  This large wasp is recognized by measuring about 1 and 5/8 inch long and with a rusty to black color with yellowish markings on its abdomen.  It is also recognized by the large holes it borrows into the ground to lay its eggs.  Typically they use bare ground as nesting sites.  Each Cicada Killer digs a single borrow, then locates a cicada, stings it, and brings the paralyzed cicada back to the burrow.  One or 2 cicadas may be placed in each burrow and an egg is deposited on one of the cicadas.  The wasp larva feeds on the paralyzed cicada.  These large dangerous looking wasps, generally the females will not sing unless handled or stepped on, males will buzz people but cannot sting.  These insects are beneficial by helping control the cicada population.  If the Cicada Killer Wasp become too much of a nuisance, cover as much of the bare ground around your home or business or we can treat the bare ground area with limited effect over the nesting period.

          Frogs are common throughout the world. There are over 85 species here in the United States. The most common species include tree frogs, toads, and bullfrogs. Tree frogs and bullfrogs are most common where there is adequate water for their survival and reproduction. Toads are more prevalent where it is dry. Though tree frogs are considered beneficial because they eat insects, in some cases local populations can become a nuisance.

          Tree frogs can become a problem for many reasons. Tree frogs mostly live in trees but will find their way into homes. Once there, they will hide behind shutters, under siding window frames, siding, rain gutters, overhanging bricks and facia boards away from sunlight in shaded areas are all prime tree frog hiding sites during the day. Tree frogs like these areas and at night they will emerge to feed.

THE FLORIDA COTTON RAT

 

The Florida Cotton Rat inhabits most of the southern United States, including most of Florida.  This rat is also known at the Hispid Cotton Rat.  The Florida Cotton Rat prefers to live in dense covered grassy fields, overgrown roadsides, or fencerow vegetation adjacent to cultivated fields.  They also occupy meadows, marshy areas, cactus patches, and weedy ditch banks.  Under the protective cover, the Florida Cotton Rat will have well-defined runways radiating in all direction from the nest site.

This rat is a moderately large, robust rodent with a scaly, sparsely haired tail that is shorter than the combined head and body.  They have relatively large eyes.  The ears are large but almost hidden in the fur.  Distinguishing characteristic is the rough grizzled appearance of the blackish or grayish fur and the rather stiff black guard hairs.  They average 10 inches long including the tail length of 4 inches.  They may be identified as a Norway rat but are smaller in size.

The Florida Cotton Rats are normally herbivores, eating the roots, stems, leaves, and seeds of a wide variety of plants, fruits, berries and nuts.  Cotton rats will cut tall plants off at the base and continue to cut them into shorter sections.  They will also eat insects, the eggs and young of ground-nesting birds and carcasses of dead animals.

These rats are basically nocturnal but will venture out in the daytime and are active year-round.  They do not store food or hibernate.  They are excitable, pugnacious, and aggressive toward mice living in the same fields.  Their nests are a crude mass of dry grass fibers stripped from larger plant stems, placed in shallow surfaces depression, among clumps of coarse grasses, underground in shallow tunnels, or under rocks or logs.  They seldom inter homes or structures.

            Blow flies and flesh flies are very common flies associated with dead animals. Blow flies can be found in almost every known terrestrial habitat and they are found in association with human civilization throughout the world. Blow flies include a number of species including the common Blue Bottle Fly and the Green Bottle Fly. Adult flies are metallic blue, green, copper or black colored flies that otherwise resemble large house flies in appearance. Other blow flies include the Black Blow Fly and the Cluster Fly.

          The larvae (maggots) of these flies feed on dead animal tissue and as such are beneficial in nature as decomposer of dead animal carcasses. The appearance of these flies or maggots in the house typically indicates that an animal (i.e. rodent, bird, etc.) has died within the walls or in the attic. The larvae infest the animal carcass for 5-10 days before they leave the carcass and wander in search of a dry place to pupate. Maggots have hook-like mouthparts. Adults have sponge-like mouthparts similar to those of house flies. These maggots are unsavory but harmless.

          Female flies lay eggs on or near suitable habitats. Tiny maggots hatch from eggs in 6 to 48 hours. After 2 to 7 days they form a pupa (cocoon), Adult flies emerge 10 to 17 days after the formation of the pupa (cocoon). Development from egg to adult occurs in 16 to 35 days, depending on temperature and environmental conditions. The adults can live up to six weeks.

          Adult blow flies are attracted to nectar, carrion, garbage, bloody or soiled hair, fur, or wool.

          Sanitation via removal and proper disposal of garbage, carcasses and similar breeding media is probably the most satisfactory method of limiting blow fly populations. The only necessary control for flesh fly maggots is to vacuum or sweep them up and discard. Then check for dead animals in the walls, attic, etc.

WHITE FLY FICUS FIG WHITE FLY PEST CONTROL EXTERMINATOR NAPLES BONITA SPRINGS FORT MYERS FLORIDA

DON’T LET FICUS FLIES DAMAGE YOUR HEDGES OR TREES 

If you see your Ficus Trees or Hedge suddenly losing its leaves or turning brown and tiny white, gnat-like, adult whiteflies fly from the foliage.  DON’T WAIT contact us quickly!  You may have the Fig White Fly attacking your Ficus.  They can defoliate your trees and hedges very quickly.  Although your ficus tree or hedge may appear to be dying after losing a lot of leaves, it may not be a goner.  If the twigs are still flexible, it may refoliate in a few weeks.  Very Important:  if you find an infestation do not pt pruning clippers in the yard waste, trash pick-up.  Don’t spread the flies to other areas of our neighborhood.  Keep the clippings in a garbage bag or in compose piles to kill the flies.

These Fig White Flies are hard to see compared to other species of whiteflies.  The body of the adult Fig Whitefly is yellow in color and the wings are white with a faint grey band towards the middle of the wing and a grey longitudinal bar on the inside of the back edge of each  of the front wings. 

Ficus hedges and trees are not native to South Florida and these Fig White Flies are quickly spreading northward from Homestead since 2007.  Fortunately, these flies can be controlled.  First, you have to determine if you already have Fig Whitefly.  If not, keep monitoring your trees and hedges for early signs of an infestation, such as; leaves falling off or small gnat-like flies emerging from the foliage.

The Big Head Ant does not sting or cause any structural damage, and usually does not bite unless the nest is disturbed, and even then, the bite is not painful.

          Big Head Ants are a soil-nesting ant that leaves piles of loose sandy soil. Homeowners are annoyed by these "dirt piles" and by ants foraging in bathrooms, kitchens, around doors, and windows, as well as on exterior paved or brick walkways or driveways. Control of Big Head Ants is difficult because the ant colonies are numerous and populations usually extend across property lines. The Big Head Ant receives its common name from the large-sized head of the major worker, or "soldier." Minor workers are small reddish brown ants.

GHOST ANTS

          The Ghost Ant has become the number one pest ant found in Southwest Florida. This ant is identified by the worker ants running erratically and rapidly on a set trail that can be traced back to the nest.  They are very tiny, about 1/32 of an inch long, and derives its name from the fact that it is very difficult to see.  The head and thorax of the Ghost Ant is dark in color and the abdomen and legs are very pale.  This forces a person to look very closely at surfaces just to see the workers moving about.  They will create trails from just a few ants to hundreds. 

                These trails can usually be located along building foundations and up the walls outdoors.  Ghost ants will readily trail down branches of trees and shrubs into the structure, and through cracks around eaves and soffits.  The Ghost Ant's primary habitat is outdoors.  They will nest in the soil, dead tree limbs, under stones, and in hollow cavities of plants.  Inside, the Ghost Ant will nest inside wall voids, behind base boards, and under cabinets. 

                Each Ghost Ant colony is moderate in size, with thousands of workers and numerous reproductive queens.  New colonies are started by "budding" where one or more reproductive queens, together with workers and brood (larvae and pupae), move away from the original colony. 

                The worker Ghost Ant is very fond of honeydew secreted by aphids, but will also feed upon live and dead insects.  Moisture is a limiting factor in the survival of Ghost Ants. They have a very high need for moisture. 

                Conditions which result in excess moisture such as poor drainage or plumbing leaks should be corrected.  If possible, a vegetation free border should be installed around the foundation.  Branches of trees and shrubs which

touch the structure should be trimmed back.  Successful control of the Ghost Ant depends upon the ability to locate

the foraging ants and  the nest sites.  The liberal use of bait in proper locations works well when combined with an exterior power spray treatment.  The Ghost Ant can often be controlled within a few days.

                Both Silverfish and Firebrats have flattened bodies, broad at the front and tapering gradually toward the rear (carrot shaped).  They both have three long slender appendages found at the rear of the body and two long slender antennae attached to their heads.  Both are wingless with their bodies covered with scales.  Silverfish are shiny silver gray or pearl gray in color and Firebrats are mottled gray in color.  Both are active at night and hide during the day.

                Silverfish live and develop in damp cool places such as baseboards, bookcases, closets, window and door frames.  Large numbers of Silverfish may be found in newly constructed buildings in which the newly plastered walls are still damp.

                Firebrats live and develop in hot damp places such as around furnaces, fireplaces, hot water pipes and heaters, insulation, and outdoor mulch beds.
