            Blow flies and flesh flies are very common flies associated with dead animals. Blow flies can be found in almost every known terrestrial habitat, and they are found in association with human civilization throughout the world. Blow Flies include a number of species including the common bluebottle fly, and the green bottlefly. Adult flies are metallic blue, green, copper or black colored flies that otherwise resemble large house flies in appearance. Other Blow Flies include the black blow fly and the cluster fly.

            The larvae (maggots) of these flies feed on dead animal tissue and as such are beneficial in nature as decomposer of dead animal carcasses. The appearance of the flies or maggots in the house typically indicates that an animal (i.e. rodent, bird, etc.) has died within the walls or in the attic. The larvae infest the animal carcass for 5-10 days before they leave the carcass and wander in search of a dry place to pupate. Maggots have hook-like mouthparts. Adults have sponge-like mouthparts similar to those of house flies. These maggots are unsavory but harmless.

Female flies lay eggs on or near suitable habitats. Tiny maggots hatch from eggs in 6 to 48 hours. After 2 to 7 days they form a pupa (cocoon), Adult flies emerge 10 to 17 days after the formation of the pupa (cocoon). Development from egg to adult occurs in 16 to 35 days, depending on temperature and environmental conditions. The adults can live up to six weeks.

Adult blow flies are attracted to nectar, carrion, garbage, and other refuse and soggy, bloody or soiled hair, fur, or wool.

            Sanitation via removal and proper disposal of garbage, carcasses and similar breeding media is probably the most satisfactory method of limiting blow fly populations. The only necessary control for flesh fly maggots is to vacuum or sweep them up and discard. Then check for dead animals in the walls, attic, etc.

If you see your Ficus Trees or Hedge suddenly loosing its leaves or turning brown and tiny white, gnat-like, adult whiteflies fly from the foliage.  DON’T WAIT contact us quickly!  You may have the Fig White Fly attacking your Ficus.  They can defoliate your trees and hedges very quickly.  Although your ficus tree or hedge may appear to be dying after losing a lot of leaves, it may not be a goner.  If the twigs are still flexible, it may refoliate in a few weeks.  Very Important:  if you find an infestation do not pt pruning clippers in the yard waste, trash pick-up.  Don’t spread the flies to other areas of our neighborhood.  Keep the clippings in a garbage bag or in compose piles to kill the flies.

These Fig White Flies are hard to see compared to other species of whiteflies.  The body of the adult Fig Whitefly is yellow in color and the wings are white with a faint grey band towards the middle of the wing and a grey longitudinal bar on the inside of the back edge of each  of the front wings.

Ficus hedges and trees are not native to South Florida and these Fig White Flies are quickly spreading northward from Homestead since 2007.  Fortunately, these flies can be controlled.  First, you have to determine if you already have Fig Whitefly.  If not, keep monitoring your trees and hedges for early signs of an infestation, such as; leaves falling off or small gnat-like flies emerging from the foliage.

FIRE ANTS IN FLORIDA 

THE LITTLE FIRE ANT

                The Little Fire Ant gets its name from its very painful sting.  However, it is not closely related to the true fire ants which belong to the group of fire ants from Central and South America.  Here in Florida it is located in Central and South Florida.  These ants do not seem to form definite underground nests but instead appear in clusters beneath objects and in crack and crevices.  New colonies are started by budding where workers and inseminated females leave the parent colony and wander off, but remain part of the super colony. Little Fire Ants tend to eliminate competitive ant species within their territory.  The Little Fire Ant is less aggressive than The Native Fire Ant or The Imported Fire Ant.  They may be crawling on you for some time without being disturbed or stinging.  Since they do not have distinctive mounds a person may not realize they are standing in a Little Fire Ant area and be stung without warning. The Little Fire Ant is recognized by its light to golden brown color with the abdomen slightly darker.  It has a pair of spines on its pedicel instead of a distinctive node.  It also has very large mandibles, a robust body for its size, and a stinger at the end of the gaster.

THE NATIVE FIRE ANT 

                The Native Fire Ant or sometimes call the Southern Fire Ant was the original fire ant to the South and Florida for years.  It nests in the ground but does not build the large mounds like the red imported fire ants does.  The Native Fire Ant is less aggressive than its exotic sister the red imported fire ant.  This ant builds mounds that are irregular craters consisting of scattered soil with multiple, obscure entrances.  These nests are in the open under objects such as boards and stones, sand sometimes in woodwork or masonry.   A person may not be aware that they are standing in a Native Fire Ant area and have Native Fire Ants on them before they realize the stinging.  The Native Fire Ant is omnivorous with a distinct preference for oily meat and nuts and other high protein foods.  They will chew on clothing, kill young poultry, feed on various plants and seeds, gnaw into vegetables and fruits, and remove the rubber insulation from around telephones wires.  These ants are recognized by their body color is highly variable with the head and thorax yellowish red and the gaster dark.  Some eastern forms have a brownish to black head and thorax.  They have a two segmented petiole instead of a node, and a stinger at the end of the gaster.  The larger mandible and clypeus has two distinct teeth on their robust body. 

THE IMPORTED FIRE ANT 

                The Imported Fire Ant is the most aggressive fire ant for its sting and destruction of property. This ant is found from Southern Florida west to Texas and as far north as Virginia.  The Imported Fire Ant has an omnivorous diet and opportunistic feeding habits, and they feed on any plant or animal they encounter.  In heavy infestations coexisting species of ants other invertebrates and vertebrates suffer and are sometimes eliminated.  The Red Imported fire ant has been known to kill live stock, like cows out in a pasture. The painful sting which they are able to inflict in unison after crawling up the legs of an unwitting victim is the basis of their reputation.  The venom of the Red Imported Fire Ant contains piperidines, which cause a burning sensation, and proteins, which can cause life threatening anaphylactic shock in a small percentage of the population.  The Red Imported Fire Ant is recognized by its body color is an almost uniform dark reddish brown.  They are 1/8 to ¼ inch long and have a two segmented petiole and a stinger at the end of the gaster.  The large mandibles and clypeus has three distinctive teeth on their robust body.

WHITE FOOT ANTS

            The White Footed ant is native to tropical Asia, but has been inadvertently introduce into South Florida.  The White Footed Ant arrived in the Homestead are of Florida in 1986, followed by rapidly spreading up and out expanding throughout the rest of South Florida.

                The White Footed Ants are relatively small ants with a black body and yellowish-white feet, called tibia and tarsi.  These ants do not bite or sting, nor have they been reported to cause any type of structural damage.  They are just a nuisance ant attracted to sweet foods.  Thus, it is common to find them foraging indoors around kitchens and bathrooms, and outside on hedges infested with honeydew producing insects, such as aphid and scales.

                White Footed Ants in Southwest Florida for many pest control companies, have been extremely difficult to control because of several characteristics of their biology.  One big problem is that they establish colonies of well over a million ants, over half being worker ants.  Workers ants are sterile females that are responsible for foraging for food and caring for the nest.  Another problem is that food ingested by the worker ants is never shared back in the colony, as like most every other type of ant.  These sterile worker ants are capable of laying unfertilized eggs.  These Thinner more fragile non fertile eggs are what the worker ants, larva, and queens in the colony use as their food source, therefore, any toxic bait to kill off ants never reach the ants in a White Foot Ant colony, and only affect the foraging worker ants that eat the insect killing baits.

                While White Foote Ants are not directly harmful to humans or pets, their presence within the home is a nuisance. MORE TERMITE INFORMATION:

The control of subterranean termites is often a major expense and like any other household expense should be carefully considered. As you have read above that termite’s eat very slowly.  Do not rush into an agreement with any firm before you thoroughly investigate what is offered.  Subterranean Termites, as the name suggests, live in the soil, in most cases.  In some cases, when there is adequate moisture available within the home, they will “nest” in the home and not return to the colony located in the soil. The subterranean termite is an important part of our environment.  In a natural setting, this termite recycles dead trees back into the soil. Without the termite, our forests would be littered with dead trees as wood “rot” cannot keep up.  No one has been able to convince the termite that “dead” wood in your home should not be eaten.  The termite sees the wood in your home as just another food source.  The main portion of the colony stays in the ground and the workers, (cream colored & wingless), come into the home through “mud” tubes or cracks in the concrete as small as 1/64 of an inch.  Once inside, they will eat the wood and bring it back to their nest mates in the ground. 

During the spring of each year, the termites produce a winged alate (Swarmers).  The purpose of the swarmers is to fly up into the air, find the opposite sex, mate, and start new colonies.   Both the male and the female break off their wings and look for a suitable nesting area.  In the forest, this would be a dead, damp decaying tree on the forest floor.  When they swarm into the home, in most cases, they cannot damage the home, or start a nest as the area is much too dry. So unless you have a wet, rotten log in your living room, the alates cannot hurt you.   Our experience has shown that there are normally three swarms.  The first swarm is the major one, the second swarm is often 1/10th in size, and the last swarm is normally just a few insects.  Subterranean termites normally avoid light.  When swarmers are created by the colony, the opposite happens.  The swarmers are attracted to light when they emerge, and are often found in window sills.   As they come out in large numbers, they can be an awful nuisance.  Try not to spray them with common household insecticides, as these products contain oils that can stain and make a mess.  The easiest way to remove these alates is to vacuum them up.  They will die shortly in the dry environment of the vacuum bag.  Often, these swarmers will emerge within 30-60- days AFTER A HOME HAS BEEN TREATED. This is a defensive measure by the colony.  The colony is under stress from the treatment and will often respond by sending the remaining swarmers out.

LESSER WAX MOTH

“Better known as Waxworms” 

The Lesser Wax Moth is a rather small plain looking moth that has an interesting life history.  First seen in North American in 1806 and believed to have been imported there with honeybees from Europe.  The adults are described as having a narrow creamy white body with a brown head and is about 10-13mm in length. The damaging larvae are yellowish tan that forms a white cocoon in frass. They typically reside in milder climates, but prevail in year round warm climates such as Florida, where they are a serious pest problem with stored honey suppliers.

The adult moths are attracted to light. Both Lesser Wax Moth eggs and larvae can usually be found in bee colonies, but are routinely eliminated by worker bees and the moths never build to large population levels.

The larvae feed on the wax of old honeycombs in beehives, dried vegetables and fruit, stored pollen, horn shavings, cork, refined sugar, and dead insects.  The adult stage of the Lesser Wax Moth does not eat. The larva is the stage that causes the damage.

This cockroach's common name comes from the country where it was originally collected.  It found it's way here in bunches of bananas and tobacco.  It is only found in Florida, along the Gulf Coast in Louisiana and Texas; it is widely distributed in Mexico, central America and northern South America.

INFORMATION ABOUT FLEAS

            Fleas are pest to humans and their domestic animals all over the world.  While most fleas prefer non-human hosts, many can and do feed on humans when infestations are heavy or when other hosts are not readily available.

                Fleas are small, wingless parasitic insects that are extremely well adapted to their environment.  The first step toward effective control is recognizing two very important factors.  First, the 4 stages of the flea life cycle (egg, larva, pupa, and adult) have to be broken or stopped.  Second, the flea population must be controlled everywhere it exists, on the pet, inside the home, and out in the yard.

                1.  THE EGG STAGE

                The eggs are laid loosely and singly on the host.  The eggs are not sticky so when the host shakes, scratches, or moves around the eggs will be deposited in all areas where the hosts rest, sleeps, and is active.

                2.  THE LARVAL STAGE

                Flea larva is whitish, legless, and worm like.  Unlike adult fleas, the larvae are free living (non-parasitic) with chewing mouth parts and feed on material available in their environment.   It is necessary for successful development of the larva to feed on organic debris and the adult flea excrement containing dried blood which composes the main diet of the flea larva. Larvae are more sensitive to temperature and humidity than the eggs.  Low humidity, less than 50%, is fatal for flea larvae.  The larval period normally lasts 7-15 days, but can be as long as several months if the environment is less favorable.

                3.  THE PUPAL STAGE

                Unlike the egg and larval stage, the pupa stage is very resilient to harsh conditions.  The cocoon serves to protect the pupa from predators and also acts as a barrier against insecticides.  Within the cocoon the pupa changes into a pre-emerged adult flea.  Adults will emerge from the pupa case in 5-7 days under favorable conditions.  In adverse conditions, the pupae and pre-emerged adults can lay quiet within the cocoon for up to a full year.   Flea emergence can be stimulated by body warmth of the host and the pressure made by a host walking on the pre-emerged adult within the cocoon, increased temperatures and mechanical disturbances.

                4.  THE ADULT STAGE

                The adult flea has well developed legs for jumping.  Adults have piercing-sucking mouth parts and are usually ready to take a blood meal, their only source of food, 24-48 hours after emerging from the cocoon.  Adult fleas spend 90% of their life on the host and feed many times a day.  On average, the female flea lays 15-20 eggs per day for the 10-14 days that she is fertile.

                For an effective flea program to stop any re-infestation of fleas in all areas, the pet, the home, and the yard must be treated.  Pets drop flea eggs anywhere at any time.  After hatching, the flea larva then can migrate to dark low traffic areas where food is available.  All stages of the flea can be carried throughout the house in the laundry, on people or on their clothing.  Also, if the infested pet frequently travels in the family vehicle it may be necessary to treat the vehicle as well.  Outdoor treatment is also necessary when the pets are allowed outside.

                Although nearly all adult fleas present at the time of service will be controlled, don’t be alarmed if you see some fleas within a few days to three weeks after treatment.  These are newly emerged adults from the cocoon of the pupa stage.  If these conditions are present after treatment, control the new adults on the pet with bathing or a pet flea insecticide.  Any flea prevention program must include regular grooming and bathing of the pet.  If the pet is not being treated regularly, you could see constant sighting of fleas.  Your home and your yard would not be re-infested but your pet would be infested.

          While you've probably never seen them, you may have seen their tunnels running across your lawn or through your garden beds. In heavily infested areas, these tunnels form a vast network of interconnecting highways. The main runways are often 5 to 8 inches deep, but can vary from 2 to 20 inches underground. The chambers created are about the size of a quart jar. Moles dig runways to search for food, provide protection from predators and create space for resting and breeding.

            Moles prefer loose, moist soil (sandy loam is ideal) where digging is easy and food plentiful. In fact, they're often considered beneficial creatures because they feed on white grubs, mole crickets, and other pest insects that might otherwise harm your plants. Moles are not rodents, but members of the order Insectivora. All moles are characterized by enlarged forefeet with long claws, stout necks and powerful shoulders that make them capable burrowers. Depending on the species, moles are usually 4 to 8 inches long, with long snouts (1/2 inch) and velvety fur.

            Moles are primarily carnivores. Their diets consist mainly of earthworms, grubs, beetles and insect larvae they find in the soil. Moles have hearty appetites, consuming 60%-80% of their body weight each day. A single mole eats about 40 pounds of food each year.

If you see your Ficus Trees or Hedge suddenly loosing its leaves or turning brown and tiny white, gnat-like, adult whiteflies fly from the foliage.  DON’T WAIT contact us quickly!  You may have the Fig White Fly attacking your Ficus.  They can defoliate your trees and hedges very quickly.  Although your ficus tree or hedge may appear to be dying after losing a lot of leaves, it may not be a goner.  If the twigs are still flexible, it may refoliate in a few weeks.  Very Important:  if you find an infestation do not pt pruning clippers in the yard waste, trash pick-up.  Don’t spread the flies to other areas of our neighborhood.  Keep the clippings in a garbage bag or in compose piles to kill the flies.

These Fig White Flies are hard to see compared to other species of whiteflies.  The body of the adult Fig Whitefly is yellow in color and the wings are white with a faint grey band towards the middle of the wing and a grey longitudinal bar on the inside of the back edge of each  of the front wings. 

Ficus hedges and trees are not native to South Florida and these Fig White Flies are quickly spreading northward from Homestead since 2007.  Fortunately, these flies can be controlled.  First, you have to determine if you already have Fig Whitefly.  If not, keep monitoring your trees and hedges for early signs of an infestation, such as; leaves falling off or small gnat-like flies emerging from the foliage.

            In the Sunshine State, the primary range for land snails is South Florida, which has consistently warm temperatures. Most land snails prefer moist climates and semi-aquatic habitats. Some of Florida's common snail species are exotic -- not native to the state -- and are considered pests in urban gardens.  Snails were brought to the U.S. from Europe in the 1850, with the idea that they would be a food, like they are over there. Instead, they became a prolific and very destructive pest.

            According to the University of Florida, there are two common garden snails in the state -- the garden Zachrysia and the Banded Caracol.  The Zachrysias Snail is a family of air-breathing land snails found throughout much of the tropics. A number of species are known from Central and South America and some Caribbean Islands. Three introduced species occur in Florida. The Banded Caracol Snail is a very distinctive species and cannot be confused with other species occurring in Florida due to its large size and banded color pattern. Although the introduction was first recorded in 1919, the presence of viable populations of this large species remained

unknown until it was rediscovered in 1991. Both snails, originally found in Cuba, were introduced to South Florida in the early 20th century. Garden Zachrysias,feast on small fruits and ornamental plants, while Banded Caracols, eat algae and decaying plants. Banded Caracols have shells that are 1 1/2 inches long. Garden Zachrysia shells are approximately 1 inch long.

Rugose Spiraling White Fly

 

The Rugose Spiraling Whitefly originated in Central America.  This is not the same whitefly that is currently causing defoliation and branch dieback of ficus in South Florida.  These whiteflies are small winged insects.  They typically feed on the underside of leaves with their needle-like mouthparts.  Whiteflies can seriously injure host plants by sucking nutrients from the plant causing wilting, yellowing, stunting, leaf drop, or even death.

The Rugose Spiraling Whitefly has a very broad host range from palms to woody ornamentals and fruits.  It has been seen on gumbo limbo, black olive, copperleaf, broadleaf arrowhead, Brazilian pepper, wax myrtle, live oak, mango, and several palms.

The adults congregate on the undersides of the leaves to feed and reproduce.  The female lays here eggs in a spiral pattern on the leaves and also deposits a white, waxy substance on the eggs.  The crawler stage hatches from the eggs and crawls around before it starts to feed with its “needle-like” mouthparts.  This stage is very small and difficult to see.

The most noticeable symptoms of an infestation of this whitefly is the abundance of white, waxy material covering the leaves and also excessive black sooty mold.  The actual effect of an infestation of Rugose Spiraling Whitefly on the health of a plant is unknown; however, whiteflies in general can cause plant decline, defoliation and branch dieback.

Monitor plants for early signs of an infestation.  Small potted plants can be washed off with water.  Larger plants can be controlled with horticultural oil or insecticidal soap or most likely will need an insecticide spraying and root drenching by a professional lawn pest control company to control these whiteflies.  They will use a systemic insecticide product that can be applied directly to the infested plant or the soil.

            Centipedes are very common here in Southwest Florida.  Sometimes confused with millipedes do not damage food or furnishings in your home. Centipedes are identified by having one pair of legs per body segment compared with millipedes that have two pair of legs per body segment and are usually brownish, flattened animals.  Centipedes are fast runners and grow to a length from 1 to 6 inches.  Centipedes have an appendage at the rear of their body that looks like a singer.  It is not, this appendage is designed for the Centipede to hold it’s pray until it can eat it. 

Centipedes have poorly developed eyes and are most active at night.  They are active predators and feed mainly on insects and spiders.  All centipedes have venom glands to immobilize their prey.  The jaws of the smaller local species cannot penetrate human skin; however the larger species may inflict painful bites.  This is how they catch their food source which is spiders, small live insects and their larva.

            Centipedes live humid damp dark places such as under stones, leaf litter, logs, bark, ground cover and debris.  If they invade your home the Centipede could be found most likely in closets, bathrooms, and kitchen areas.

            Centipedes usually lay 15 to 55 eggs clustered together in the soil but sometimes they are laid singly.  The eggs hatch soon after they are deposited.  The female will usually guard the newly hatched young.  Young Centipedes closely resemble the adult and require 3 years to mature.  Centipedes are rather long-lived and individuals may live up to 6 years.

                Ants can be a nuisance here in Southwest Florida and one of the most persistent pest problems is the Crazy Ant.  This is a small brown to black ant about 1/10^th inch long with a tremendous amount of energy.  The Crazy Ant got named from the habit of running about very erratically with no apparent sense of direction.  They are sometimes recognized by their extremely long legs and antennae out of proportion to the other parts of their body.  This unusual feature is a good identifying characteristic.

                The Crazy Ant is found in the ground, dead logs, fence posts, hollow trees, mulch, potted plants, small cracks, crevices and voids inside structures, and wanders throughout the building searching for food.  The Crazy ant is very adaptable of nesting habits.  They will nest in both moist and relatively dry environments.  They prefer to feed on animal mater, grease and other insects, but will readily eat sweets, of all kinds.  The workers will forage up to 100 feet or more from the colony in search of food.

                Each colony contains numerous queens.  The Crazy Ant colony is very mobile and will move from one site to a new site if conditions become unfavorable.  New colonies are produced by budding or splitting apart.  Budding occurs when one or more queens and a group of workers split away from the original colony to form a new colony.

                Treating or controlling Crazy Ants consists of three steps.  First, is to correct any condition contributing to the infestation, such as excess moisture. Then, is locating and treating existing colonies, using baits and spray insecticides.  Finally, is to establish barriers of residual insecticide around the structure to try to prevent new Crazy Ants from entering the building.

The Florida Cotton Rat inhabits most of the southern United States, including most of Florida.  This rat is also known at the Hispid Cotton Rat.  The Florida Cotton Rat prefers to live in dense covered grassy fields, overgrown roadsides, or fencerow vegetation adjacent to cultivated fields.  They also occupy meadows, marshy areas, cactus patches, and weedy ditch banks.  Under the protective cover, the Florida Cotton Rat will have well-defined runways radiating in all direction from the nest site.

This rat is a moderately large, robust rodent with a scaly, sparsely haired tail that is shorter than the combined head and body.  They have relatively large eyes.  The ears are large but almost hidden in the fur.  Distinguishing characteristic is the rough grizzled appearance of the blackish or grayish fur and the rather stiff black guard hairs.  They average 10 inches long including the tail length of 4 inches.  They may be identified as a Norway rat but are smaller in size.

The Florida Cotton Rats are normally herbivores, eating the roots, stems, leaves, and seeds of a wide variety of plants, fruits, berries and nuts.  Cotton rats will cut tall plants off at the base and continue to cut them into shorter sections.  They will also eat insects, the eggs and young of ground-nesting birds and carcasses of dead animals.

          The Reef Gecko is the smallest and only native North American Lizard east of the Mississippi River.  This brown gecko with a pointy snout and boney ridges over the eyes, is commonly found in the Florida Keys and coastal regions of the Sunshine State. The males are covered with small dark spots and the females have dark stripes down their bodies and two light spots on the nape of their neck.  This dark-skinned Reef Gecko adult measures about 2 ½ inches long.  This gecko is primarily active at night with a diet that consists of small insects and spiders.  The gecko is an egg-laying lizard, laying a single egg at a time.  This gecko can be found under leaves and debris on Florida’s beaches, in urban areas, and ornamental gardens.

            The Mudd Dobber Wasp gets its name from the fact that they construct their next of mud.  They are typically a nuisance pest, building their mud nests on sheltered sites like eaves, porch ceilings, garages, sheds, barns, open attic, or any protected wall or structure.  The Mudd Dobber Wasp is recognized by its ½ to 1 inch very slender metallic black body.  The nest looks like a clump of mud stuck on to the side of a structure and as the young adult Mudd Dobbers emerge from the nest they leave small holes in the nest, showing the nest is old or inactive.
