TOXIC WHAT IS TOXIC NAPLES BONITA SPRINGS FORT MYERS FLORIDA

 WHAT IS TOXIC

Today’s modern convinces include many natural and manmade products to give us a higher standard of living.  When purchasing these products, there is a personal responsibility to pick and choose the product that combines proper safety and environmental protection for the usage needed.  Most people are not aware of the level of toxicity a product has when using it.  The general public also is not aware that the government has given us a standard code of toxicity on which each product is measured.  The level of toxicity must be put on the front of the label on any non food product produced.

The level of toxicity each product measures are found on the label of the product in the form of a SIGNAL WORD.  This SIGNAL WORD indicates how potentially dangerous this product is to humans and other animals.  Knowing the product’s level of toxicity can help you choose wisely and take the proper precautionary measures for handling and using the product.

The SIGNAL WORD must appear in large letters on the front panel of the label, immediately following the statement “Keep Out of the Reach of Children”, which also appears on all product labels.

These are the four levels of toxicity and the SIGNAL WORDS for each level.

DANGER      This word signals that the product is highly toxic.  A taste to a teaspoonful of the undiluted product, taken by mouth, could kill an average sized (175 lb.) adult.  Any product which is highly toxic, orally, dermal or through inhalation, or which causes severe eye and skin burning will be labeled  DANGER.

WARNING    This word signals that the product is moderately toxic.  As little as a teaspoon to an ounce of the undiluted product, taken by mouth, could kill an average sized (175 lb.) adult.  Any product which is moderately toxic orally, dermal or through inhalation, or causes moderate eye and skin irritation, will be labeled WARNING.

CAUTION     This word signals that the product is slightly toxic.  An ounce to a pint of the undiluted product, taken by mouth, could kill an average sized (175 lb.) adult.  Any product which is slightly toxic orally, dermal, or through inhalation, or causes slight eye and skin irritation, will be labeled  CAUTION.

NO SIGNAL WORD            The absence of a signal word indicates that the product is almost non toxic, less than lightly toxic.  Much more than a pint of undiluted product, taken by mouth, would be needed to kill an average sized (175 lb.) adult.  This also indicates that the product has little or no toxicity to dermal or inhalation poisoning and does not have much or any eye or skin irritation.

Check your storage closets, and when you shop look at the labels for the toxic level, SIGNAL WORD, for products that meet your safety and needs.  Collier Pest Control uses the most effective materials available, in the caution level or less, when servicing your home or business.  We take your safety and our environment very seriously in choosing products that is why we offer our Enviro-Care Pest Control Service.  This service offers you complete pest control service without any open pesticide spraying.  Only natural products are placed in cracks and crevices to give you comfort and protection.

If you have concerns or questions on interpreting any product you may be using.  Call, 239-455-4300, Collier Pest Control today for a complete explanation on Signal Words or any of our service, or look us up on our web site at collierpestcontrol.com.  Don’t let unwanted guests spoil your beautiful Southwest Florida lifestyle.  Remember, Florida does not have to shared with insects

HONEY BEE PEST CONTROL EXTERMINATOR NAPLES BONITA SPRINGS FORT MYERS FLORIDA

THE HONEY BEE

Honey Bees get their name from the sweet yellowish to brownish fluid they make from the nectar of flowers and use as food.  Honey Bees not only provide honey and wax, but as pollinators are of far greater importance.  They are responsible for a large share of insect stings, although many stings blamed on bees are actually done by yellowjackets.  More people die of allergic reaction to Bee stings than of rattle snake bites each year.  Bees can only sting you once.  When stinging them pull away and leave the back half of their abdomen, with the poison sack and the stinger imbedded in your skin.  This action kills s the insect that stung you.  This poison sack can continue to inject poison into your body for a few minutes after the sting.  They are best controlled at night using dusts and contact sprays.  Queen Bees lay as many as 1,500 to 2000 eggs per day, and may live as long as 5 years.  Worker Bees only live 5 to 7 weeks in the summer and shorter during the winter

CRICKET PEST CONTROL EXTERMINATOR NAPLES BONITA SPRINGS FORT MYERS FLORIDA

CRICKETS

The common name “House Cricket” comes from the fact that thee crickets often enter houses where they can survive indefinitely. Having been introduced from Europe, this species is found throughout the United States but is a pest primarily east of the Rocky Mountains.  Crickets are nocturnal or active at night and usually hide in dark warm places during the day. Their presence is indicated by the male’s chirping with is done y rubbing their front wings together.  His chirping serves to attract females.

Outside, they are often attracted to electric lights in large numbers. When present in large numbers, crickets are a considerable annoyance and if inside can cause damage to some fabrics, such as wood, cotton, linens, rayon, and furs.  They will attack paper, all kinds of foods, and even rubber.  Outside, they feed on plants and dead or live insects, including other crickets.

Crickets are closely related to cockroaches, their young look like adults except their wings are not fully developed.  The House Cricket lives primarily outdoors and especially in garbage dumps, but may invade houses.  They are omnivorous, eating or drinking almost anything that is available.

Control or elimination of Crickets frequently involves treatment of both inside and outside the structure, as well as removal of breeding and feeding sites outdoors like weeding plant beds, removing woodpiles, and mowing lawns near the structure, and use of tight-fitting screens and doors.  Appropriate labeled pesticides applied to the moist, areas outdoors and well and as a indoor treatment will help control crickets.

LAWN GRAY LEAF SPOT FUNGUS PEST CONTROL NAPLES BONITA SPRINGS FORT MYERS FLORIDA

GRAY LEAF SPOT FUNGUS

GRAY LEAF SPOT:           Gray Leaf Spot Fungus develops round to oblong spots on the leaves of St. Augustine and Rye grasses that are brown to ash colored with purple to brown margins.  Spots may be covered with gray mold in warm, humid weather.  Lesions may also occur on the stems.  In severe cases leave have a scorched appearance.  This fungus is prevalent during the rainy summer months.

The elimination of most fungi can be prevented or controlled with traditional spraying or dusting.  To repeat, this is not a cure.  To prevent these fungi from appearing and damaging your turf, the turf must be sprayed before and not after the disease strikes.  It must be kept on the turf as constantly as possible for the period the disease period is likely to attack.

Collier Pest Control does not offer monthly or other scheduled turf maintenance programs.  Collier Pest Control does offer one time correction treatments for fungi and other turf damaging problems. If you have been told or suspect you may have a fungus problem in your lawn, call Collier Pest Control, 239-455-4300 for a Free Inspection or a complete explanation to any of our services.  You also can look us up on our web site at collierpestcontrol.com or Email us at info@collierpestcontrol.com.  Remember Florida does not have to be shared with insects.

EARWIG PEST CONTROL EXTERMINATOR NAPLES BONITA SPRINGS FORT MYERS FLORIDA

EARWIGS

Collier Pest Control is your Southwest Florida Pest Authority including Earwigs.  This pest is one of the most common outdoor pests seen here in Southwest Florida.  These nocturnal dangerous looking pests do slip into your home through small construction cracks and crevices foraging for food.  Earwigs are identified by their pincer like appendage at the end of the abdomen (call forceps).  They are brownish in color, with very short wings, and about ½ to 1 inch long. The forceps are used to trap prey and protect themselves, but are not strong enough to hurt anyone.

Earwigs hide during the day in moist shady places under stones, logs, mulch, dead foliage and any high moisture area.  These scavengers feed on live or dead plants and insects.

The common name “Earwig” comes from an old European superstition that these insects enter the ears of sleeping people and bore into the brain.  This is entirely unfounded since earwigs are harmless to man.

Earwigs can be difficult to control.  The key to effective Earwig control is removal of any non-essential mulch and plant debris or anything that could hold moisture such as boards and stones around your home.  The purpose of this is to establish a low moisture zone around your home that is disagreeable to Earwigs. Collier Pest Control can help eliminate these creatures with our “Collier Complete” pest control service.  We will treat all the cracks and crevices inside your home and broadcast spray the eaves, soffits, mulch beds, flowerbeds, entryways, and 5 to 10 feet perimeter outside your home.

If you live in Naples, Fort Myers, or Southwest Florida call 239-455-4300 Collier Pest Control for a free estimate and complete explanation on any of our services, or look us up on line at collierpestcontrol.com.  Do not let unwanted guests spoil your beautiful Southwest Florida lifestyle.  Remember, Florida does not have to be shared with insects!

TERMITE FREE TERMITE HOME INSPECTIONS PEST CONTROL EXTERMINATOR NAPLES BONITA SPRINGS FORT MYERS FLORIDA

WHY YOU SHOULD HAVE A YEARLY

FREE TERMITE INSPECTION

HERE’S WHY!

  • ONE IN THREE HOMES THAT SHOW NO SIGNS OF TERMITES HAVE                  ACTIVITY WITHIN TWO FEET OF THE FOUNDATION!
  • TWO OF THREE HOMES BUILT SINCE 1987 WILL HAVE A TERMITE                   INFESTATION WITHIN FIVE YEARS
  • IN MULTIPLE BUILDING SITUATIONS, EVERY BUILDING WAS BUILT THE SAME, USING THE SAME TECHNIQUES AND MATERIALS.  WHEN TERMITE PROTECTION FAILS IN ONE BUILDING, IT IS ONLY A MATTER OF TIME BEFORE THE REST WILLFAIL ALSO.

How can you tell if you have a termite problem?    It is very difficult.  Termites, by their very nature, remain hidden.  They avoid open areas and remain buried deep in the wood that they are eating.  Often, they are noticed only AFTER damage has been done to the structure.

An important point to remember is that subterranean termites work slowly. There are many, many variables when considering how fast or slow a termite’s colony will damage a home.  Size of the colony, temperature, moisture, time of year, etc all affect the speed of damage.  A small colony can typically eat six inches of a 2X4 in one year.

If you have regular routine yearly termite inspections of your home or business, you can find out if you have a termite problem or not.  Since they eat very slowly, even if they have entered your home or business you can correct the problem before they cause an extensive costly amount of damage.

Collier Pest Control now offers a diagnostic tool to help answer the question, “Do we have a termite problem?” We will install at NO CHARGE, to any of our regular Collier Complete General Household Treatment customers, 8-10 termite monitors around each building.  In 90 days, we will check each monitor, and report to you the location of any monitors that have termite activity.  This will help show you, if and where you may have termite activity close to your foundation making your home a high risk account.

This helpful tool is available to you at Collier Pest Control!  If you live in Naples, Fort Myers, or Southwest Florida call to schedule a FREE termite inspection of your home or business.  More information on Termites or any of our unwanted Florida problem pest can be found on our web site at collierpestcontrol.com. Don’t let unwanted guest spoil your beautiful Southwest Florida lifestyle.  Remember, Florida does not have to be shared with insects!

MORE TERMITE INFORMATION:

The control of subterranean termites is often a major expense and like any other household expense should be carefully considered. As you have read above that termite’s eat very slowly.  Do not rush into an agreement with any firm before you thoroughly investigate what is offered.  Subterranean Termites, as the name suggests, live in the soil, in most cases.  In some cases, when there is adequate moisture available within the home, they will “nest” in the home and not return to the colony located in the soil. The subterranean termite is an important part of our environment.  In a natural setting, this termite recycles dead trees back into the soil. Without the termite, our forests would be littered with dead trees as wood “rot” cannot keep up.  No one has been able to convince the termite that “dead” wood in your home should not be eaten.  The termite sees the wood in your home as just another food source.  The main portion of the colony stays in the ground and the workers, (cream colored & wingless), come into the home through “mud” tubes or cracks in the concrete as small as 1/64 of an inch.  Once inside, they will eat the wood and bring it back to their nest mates in the ground.

During the spring of each year, the termites produce a winged alate (Swarmers).  The purpose of the swarmers is to fly up into the air, find the opposite sex, mate, and start new colonies.   Both the male and the female break off their wings and look for a suitable nesting area.  In the forest, this would be a dead, damp decaying tree on the forest floor.  When they swarm into the home, in most cases, they cannot damage the home, or start a nest as the area is much too dry. So unless you have a wet, rotten log in your living room, the alates cannot hurt you.   Our experience has shown that there are normally three swarms.  The first swarm is the major one, the second swarm is often 1/10th in size, and the last swarm is normally just a few insects.  Subterranean termites normally avoid light.  When swarmers are created by the colony, the opposite happens.  The swarmers are attracted to light when they emerge, and are often found in window sills.   As they come out in large numbers, they can be an awful nuisance.  Try not to spray them with common household insecticides, as these products contain oils that can stain and make a mess.  The easiest way to remove these alates is to vacuum them up.  They will die shortly in the dry environment of the vacuum bag.  Often, these swarmers will emerge within 30-60- days AFTER A HOME HAS BEEN TREATED. This is a defensive measure by the colony.  The colony is under stress from the treatment and will often respond by sending the remaining swarmers out.

This helpful information is available to you from Collier Pest Control!

WOODPECKER PROTECTION WITH THE FLASHER AND COLLIER PEST CONTROL NAPLES BONITA SPRINGS FORT MYERS FLORIDA

WOODPECKER PROTECTION

WITH THE FLASHER

There are about 200 species of woodpeckers and many are threatened or endangered due to loss of habitat, with 5 common species here in Southwest Florida.  The Red-Cockaded, the Red-Bellied, the Downy, The Common Yellow Flicker, the large Pileated, and Ivory Billed Woodpecker last seen in196, all of these birds can be seen here in Southwest Florida.

The bill’s chisel-like tip is kept sharp by the pecking action, with long sticky tongues, which possess bristles, aid these birds in grabbing and extracting insects deep within a hole of a tree. To prevent brain damage from the rapid and repeated impacts, woodpeckers have evolved a number of adaptations to protect the brain.  These include small brain size, the orientation of the brain with the skull and the short duration of contact.

The diet of woodpeckers consists mainly of insects and grubs taken from living and dead trees. This also helps to keep trees healthy by keeping them from suffering mass infestations of insects.

It takes woodpeckers about a month to excavate a hole to be used for nesting.  Abandoned holes are used by other birds and mammals.  They may aggressively harass potential competitors.  In residential areas woodpeckers are known to excavate holes in homes and building eaves and décor.  This causes unsightly and costly damage.

Collier Pest Control, Southwest Florida Pest Authority, can keep these nuisance woodpeckers from attacking your home with The Flasher Woodpecker Reflector. The Flasher scares attacking woodpeckers away, keeping your home protected and beautiful.  Just a few decorative Flashers attached to the eaves of your home near the areas where the woodpeckers are attacking will keep them away with no harm to the birds.

If you live in Naples, Bonita Springs, Fort Myers, or anywhere in beautiful Southwest Florida and are being annoyed by attacking woodpeckers, call, 239-455-4300, Southwest Florida Pest Authority for a complete explanation about The Flasher, a woodpecker reflector, or look us up on our web site at collierpestcontrol.com.  Don’t let unwanted pests soil your beautiful Southwest Florida live style.  Remember, Florida doesn’t have to be shared with pests.

The Big Headed Ant is often misidentified and confused with either a pharaoh ant or a fire ant worker.  All of these ants have 2 nodes between their abdomen and thorax, are yellow to reddish brown in color and have a three section club antenna.  The Big Headed Ant has two distinct sizes of workers. A major worker, is a soldier, defends the colony and a minor worker forages for the colony.  The major workers have a very large head in proportion to their bodies which gives them the name Big Headed Ants.  The minor workers look similar to other types of ants except for the antennas which have 12 segments.  The first segment, called the scape, of the antenna only reaches about halfway up the head.  Big Headed Ants have a stinger like many other ants, but it may not be extended and visible at all times.

These ants have multiple queens and are more common as a structural pest in warm regions, such as here in Southwest Florida.  They generally are only an occasional, unwanted invader primarily living outdoors.

Big Headed Ants usually nest in the soil, in protected location under rocks, logs, firewood, patio blocks, landscape timbers, and various types of debris.  Here in Southwest Florida, they rarely nest in the soil and prefer the crack and voids within tree

bark, fences, and walls of your home.  They also form huge, extended colonies called “Super Colonies”.  New colonies are primarily formed by mid-summer flights, however budding (splitting) may occur with the large multi-queen colonies.  This ant may form large bone piles of dead colony member along foundations, baseboards, and under carpeting.

Big Headed Ants feed upon live and dead insects, seed and honeydew produced by aphids, mealybugs, and scale insects.  Once these ants get inside a home they prefer protein rich foods such as meats and peanut butter but will also feed upon sweets and fruits.

Getting rid of the Big Headed Ant is best accomplished by locating and eliminating the colonies found in and around the structure.  If the Big Headed Ant colonies cannot be located, bait can be placed in areas where foraging ants can find the bait.  However, the results may be less than satisfactory.

If you have battled these ant with little or no success, Collier Pest Control, Southwest Florida’s Pest Authority can help you eliminate the Big Head Ants invading your home!  We have a 3 stage treatment that will control and eliminate Big Head Ants from your lawn and home.

ANTS GHOST ANTS PEST CONTROL EXTERMINATOR NAPLES BONITA SPRINGS FORT MYERS FLORIDA

GHOST ANTS

The Ghost Ant has become the number one pest ant found in Southwest Florida. This ant is identified by the worker ants running erratically and rapidly on a set trail that can be traced back to the nest.  They are very tiny, about 1/32 of an inch long, and derives its name from the fact that it is very difficult to see.  The head and thorax of the Ghost Ant is dark in color and the abdomen and legs are very pale.  This forces a person to look very closely at surfaces just to see the workers moving about.  They will create trails from just a few ants to hundreds.

These trails can usually be located along building foundations and up the walls outdoors.  Ghost ants will readily trail down branches of trees and shrubs into the structure, and through cracks around eaves and soffits.  The Ghost Ant's primary habitat is outdoors.  They will nest in the soil, dead tree limbs, under stones, and in hollow cavities of plants.  Inside, the Ghost Ant will nest inside wall voids, behind base boards, and under cabinets.

Each Ghost Ant colony is moderate in size, with thousands of workers and numerous reproductive queens.  New colonies are started by "budding" where one or more reproductive queens, together with workers and brood (larvae and pupae), move away from the original colony.

The worker Ghost Ant is very fond of honeydew secreted by aphids, but will also feed upon live and dead insects.  Moisture is a limiting factor in the survival of Ghost Ants. They have a very high need for moisture.

Conditions which result in excess moisture such as poor drainage or plumbing leaks should be corrected.  If possible, a vegetation free border should be installed around the foundation.  Branches of trees and shrubs which

touch the structure should be trimmed back.  Successful control of the Ghost Ant depends upon the ability to locate

the foraging ants and  the nest sites.  The liberal use of bait in proper locations works well when combined with an exterior power spray treatment.  The Ghost Ant can often be controlled within a few days.

Don’t let insect change your lifestyle in beautiful Southwest Florida.  If you live in Naples, Fort Myers, or anywhere in Southwest Florida call 239-455-4300 Collier Pest Control today for a complete explanation and free estimate on any of our services, or look us up on our web site at collierpestcontrol.com.  Remember, Florida does not have to be shared with insects!

WHITE FLY INFORMATION PEST CONTROL EXTERMINATOR NAPLES BONITA SPRINGS FORT MYERS FLORIDA

White Fly Information

Fig White Fly Damage          Rugose Spiraling White Fly Eggs

What are whiteflies? First, they are not flies or related to flies. White Flies are small, winged insects. These insects typically feed on the underside of leaves with their “needle-like” mouthparts. Whiteflies can seriously injure host plants by sucking nutrients from the plant causing wilting, yellowing, stunting, leaf drop, or even death.

There are two types of White Flies, the Fig (ficus white fly) and the Rugose Spiraling White Fly.

The Rugose Spiraling whitefly appears to have a very broad host range from palms to woody ornamentals and fruits.  The adult Rugose Spiraling Whitefly congregates on the undersides of the leaves to feed and reproduce. The female Rugose Spiraling Whitefly lays her eggs in a spiral pattern on the leaves and also deposits a white, waxy substance on the eggs. The crawler stage hatches from the eggs and crawls around before it starts to feed with its “needle-like” mouthparts. This stage is very small and difficult to see.

The most noticeable symptoms of an infestation of the Rugose Spiraling whitefly are the abundance of the white, waxy material covering the leaves and also excessive sooty mold.  The actual effect of an infestation on the health of a plant is unknown; however, Rugose Spiraling whiteflies in general can cause plant decline, defoliation and branch dieback.

The life cycle of the Fig ficus whitefly is approximately one month. Eggs, which are usually laid on the underside of leaves, hatch into a crawler stage.

The leaves of ficus trees infested with whiteflies begin to turn yellow before the leaves are dropped from the plant. Defoliation is one of the most obvious symptoms of an infestation of ficus whitefly. However, if you have defoliation, you have had the whitefly for numerous months. In addition to defoliation, there can be branch dieback. The amount of branch dieback is highly variable and is probably linked with the overall health of the plant. In most cases, trees and hedges will grow new leaves. Dead branches need to be pruned out.

Monitor your plants for early signs of a White Fly infestation because it will be easier to manage the pest before it builds to high populations and causes major damage. Remember, if you have defoliation, the whitefly has already gone through several generations (several months).

If you have an infestation on a trees or hedges, be sure to search nearby trees, hedges, and plants as well because this whiteflies feeds on many types of trees, hedges, and plants.

If the infestation is large, an insecticide may be needed to control the whitefly population.  There are several insecticide options.  A systemic insecticide can be applied directly to the infested plant or to the soil. Contact insecticides are typically sprayed on the foliage or other infested parts of the plant or in the soil for soil-dwelling insects.

,           If you trim/prune infested plants, be sure to remove the clippings from your property to reduce the chance of spreading the insects. Note that the later stages of the whitefly on fallen leaves can survive and emerge into an adult and attack more plants.

The white, waxy material and the sooty mold on the plant from the Rugose Spiraling White Fly will take time to wear off, after treatment, unless physically washed off.

If you are in an infested area and have susceptible trees, hedges, and plants you may initially need to use an insecticide to control this pest. It is extremely important to use the appropriate insecticides.

There have been reports of this whitefly killing ficus trees and hedges. There have been cases of branch dieback which sometimes can be severe and in a few cases plant death. In most cases, the trees and hedges will grow new leaves. If the tree or hedge has suffered from a massive loss of leaves, it is important not to overwater. Without leaves, the plants are less efficient at taking in the water and start to rot in the roots or lower trunk which may lead to plant death. If the twigs are still supple, the plant will produce new leaves in a few weeks. As soon as new growth is evident, a systemic insecticide applied to the soil may provide protection to the new growth.

White Flies can be controlled for long periods of time with Systemic formulation insecticides. This type of insecticides will be absorbed into the plant within a short period of time through soil injection, drilling, or soil drenching. Then will protect the plant from 6 months to a year from future White Fly infestations.

Both types of White Flies infest large areas and complete neighborhoods. After you plants have been treated, your plants are now protected.  But, the neighborhood will still be infested.  Just as you apply insect repellant to yourself to keep mosquitoes from biting you, there are still mosquitoes near and around you. It just keeps the mosquitoes off of you.  Many of you have pets.  You apply a flea and tick insecticide on your pet to keep the fleas and ticks off of them.  That does not eliminate the fleas and ticks in your yard.  It just keeps the fleas and ticks off your pet.  This applies to the White Fly treatments also.  When you have your trees, hedges, and plants treated for White Flies, the plants are protected from White Flies.  That does not mean the White Flies are not in your neighborhood and still could be seen on or around our plants.

Once your plants have been damaged from a White Fly infestation, the existing damage cannot be repaired. The new growth from the plant will be protected with the White Fly treatment.  It depends on the type of plant and the time of the year how fast the new growth will appear.  But, when the new growth appears, inspect it for damage.  It should be healthily without damage, because the plant has been protected with the White Fly treatment.

If you live in Naples, Bonita Springs, Fort Myers, or anywhere in Southwest Florida and need your trees, hedges, and plants protected from damaging White Flies.  Call, 239-455-4300, Collier Pest Control for a complete explanation on either of our White Fly treatments or look us up on our website at collierpestcontrol.com.  Remember Florida does not have to be shared with insects.

TOXIC PEST CONTROL CONCERNS NAPLES BONITA SPRINGS FORT MYERS FLORIDA

PEST CONTROL CONCERNS

The concerns most people have with pest control service is just a lack of information.  At Collier Pest Control we choose our products by how toxic the product is and the formulation of the product.  The first thoughts we have in how we chose our products is how toxic the product is to our customers and technicians.

ALL OUR PRODUCTS ARE LESS TOXIC THAN MOST HOUSEHOLD CLEANERS.

The level of toxicity must be put on the front of the label on any non food product produced just below the words KEEP OUR THE REACH OF CHILDREN.  The levels are NO WORD being the lowest, CAUTION, WARNING, and  DANGER.  All our products our within the caution level of toxic levels.  Many household products fall within the warning and danger levels of toxicity.

The second thoughts we have in how we chose our products is to how effective they will be in controlling our Florida problem pests.  We chose micro-cap products and crack and crevice products produced by Whitmire Labs.  Today's pest control materials are now designed to last at least a period of 90 days in most environmental conditions.

Most of Collier Pest Control’s outside materials are formulated in a micro-cap solution, similar to your cold micro encapsulated cold products, to give all our customers protection for the full guarantee period when treating the mulch beds, flower beds, eaves, soffits, and 5-10 feet around the perimeter of  a home.  This means it will deteriorate slowly and be not neutralized when exposed to sunlight, rain, or even lawn sprinklers outside.

Our interior materials will not be exposed to those conditions to shorten the life of the material, so they will normally have a longer residual life.

The materials we provide for our interior that are not micro-caped are crack and crevice materials produced by BASF and Whitmire Labs.  These materials have pure active ingredients with no added water or oils to be mixed with.  This allows the product to be even more effective and give a longer life for the interior, in the cracks and crevices.

All Collier Pest Control’s interior application of materials is in a crack, crevice, or void.  This way the materials are in areas where insects will either hide or travel through.  By placing the materials in cracks and crevices, customers or their pets cannot be in touch with any of the materials and the product will last the full guaranteed period, since they cannot be touched or washed away.

If you have safety concerns about having pest control services to your home or business, call Collier Pest Control, 239-455-4300, or look us up on our web site at collierpestcontrol.com for a full explanation on our services and products we use.

FROGS TREE FROG PEST CONTROL NAPLES BONITA SPRINGS FORT MYERS FLORIDA

TREE FROGS

Frogs are common throughout the world. There are over 85 species here in the United States. The most common species include tree frogs, toads, and bullfrogs. Tree frogs and bullfrogs are most common where there is adequate water for their survival and reproduction. Toads are more prevalent where it is dry. Though tree frogs are considered beneficial because they eat insects, in some cases local populations can become a nuisance.

Tree frogs can become a problem for many reasons. Tree frogs mostly live in trees but will find their way into homes. Once there, they will hide behind shutters, under siding window frames, siding, rain gutters, overhanging bricks and facia boards away from sunlight in shaded areas are all prime tree frog hiding sites during the day. Tree frogs like these areas and at night they will emerge to feed.

The problem with having tree frogs on your home is that they tend to make a mess. Their droppings will quickly accumulate below where they are nesting. Tree frog droppings look a lot like rat droppings and can easily fool people into believing they have a rodent problem.  While frogs in and of themselves may be harmless, but they often will leave feces and a sticky residue wherever they go.

Collier Pest Control Southwest Florida’s Pest Authority can help with our Frog and Lizard Repellant Treatment.  We can treat all areas around your home or business where tree frogs are roosting, such as: the soffits, eaves, lighting, garage, doors, window sills, pool cage, lanai furniture, and even around plants.  This all natural clear treatment material does not stain.  It repels frogs, toads, and lizards away by releasing a scent certain animals can detect and don’t like. Because this is an all natural treatment, monthly applications should be made to continue keeping your home or business Frog, Toad, and Lizard Free.

If you live in Naples, Bonita Springs, Fort Myers, or anywhere in Beautiful Southwest Florida and are having a Frog, Toad, or Lizard problem, call Collier Pest Control for a full explanation of our Frog and Lizard Repellant Treatment, or on any of our services, or look us up on our web site at collierpestcontrol.com.  Remember Florida does not have to be shared with pests.

FLIES BLOW FLY PEST CONTROL EXTERMINATOR NAPLES BONITA SPRINGS FORT MYERS FLORIDA

BLOW FLIES

Blow flies and flesh flies are very common flies associated with dead animals. Blow flies can be found in almost every known terrestrial habitat and they are found in association with human civilization throughout the world. Blow flies include a number of species including the common Blue Bottle Fly and the Green Bottle Fly. Adult flies are metallic blue, green, copper or black colored flies that otherwise resemble large house flies in appearance. Other blow flies include the Black Blow Fly and the Cluster Fly.

The larvae (maggots) of these flies feed on dead animal tissue and as such are beneficial in nature as decomposer of dead animal carcasses. The appearance of these flies or maggots in the house typically indicates that an animal (i.e. rodent, bird, etc.) has died within the walls or in the attic. The larvae infest the animal carcass for 5-10 days before they leave the carcass and wander in search of a dry place to pupate. Maggots have hook-like mouthparts. Adults have sponge-like mouthparts similar to those of house flies. These maggots are unsavory but harmless.

Female flies lay eggs on or near suitable habitats. Tiny maggots hatch from eggs in 6 to 48 hours. After 2 to 7 days they form a pupa (cocoon), Adult flies emerge 10 to 17 days after the formation of the pupa (cocoon). Development from egg to adult occurs in 16 to 35 days, depending on temperature and environmental conditions. The adults can live up to six weeks.

Adult blow flies are attracted to nectar, carrion, garbage, bloody or soiled hair, fur, or wool.

Sanitation via removal and proper disposal of garbage, carcasses and similar breeding media is probably the most satisfactory method of limiting blow fly populations. The only necessary control for flesh fly maggots is to vacuum or sweep them up and discard. Then check for dead animals in the walls, attic, etc.

If you live in Naples, Fort Myers, Bonita Springs, or anywhere in Southwest Florida and have blow flies or any other pest problem, call our office for a full explanation to any of our services or look us up on our website at collierpestcontrol.com.  Remember Florida does not have to be shared with insects!

RODENTS THE FLORIDA COTTON RAT PEST CONTROL EXTERMINATOR FORT MYERS BONITA SPRINGS NAPLES FLORIDA

THE FLORIDA COTTON RAT

The Florida Cotton Rat inhabits most of the southern United States, including most of Florida.  This rat is also known at the Hispid Cotton Rat.  The Florida Cotton Rat prefers to live in dense covered grassy fields, overgrown roadsides, or fencerow vegetation adjacent to cultivated fields.  They also occupy meadows, marshy areas, cactus patches, and weedy ditch banks.  Under the protective cover, the Florida Cotton Rat will have well-defined runways radiating in all direction from the nest site.

This rat is a moderately large, robust rodent with a scaly, sparsely haired tail that is shorter than the combined head and body.  They have relatively large eyes.  The ears are large but almost hidden in the fur.  Distinguishing characteristic is the rough grizzled appearance of the blackish or grayish fur and the rather stiff black guard hairs.  They average 10 inches long including the tail length of 4 inches.  They may be identified as a Norway rat but are smaller in size.

The Florida Cotton Rats are normally herbivores, eating the roots, stems, leaves, and seeds of a wide variety of plants, fruits, berries and nuts.  Cotton rats will cut tall plants off at the base and continue to cut them into shorter sections.  They will also eat insects, the eggs and young of ground-nesting birds and carcasses of dead animals.

These rats are basically nocturnal but will venture out in the daytime and are active year-round.  They do not store food or hibernate.  They are excitable, pugnacious, and aggressive toward mice living in the same fields.  Their nests are a crude mass of dry grass fibers stripped from larger plant stems, placed in shallow surfaces depression, among clumps of coarse grasses, underground in shallow tunnels, or under rocks or logs.  They seldom inter homes or structures.

Don’t let unwanted creatures disrupt your Southwest Florida lifestyle.  If you live in Naples, Fort Myers, Southwest Florida call, 239-455-4300, Collier Pest Control, Southwest Florida’s Pest Authority, for a full explanation on any of our services, or look us up on our web site at collierpestcontrol.com, Remember Florida does not have to be shared with pests.

WASP MUDD DOBBER WASP PEST CONTROL EXTERMINATOR FORT MYERS BONITA SPRINGS NAPLES FLORIDA

THE MUDD DOBBER WASP

The Mudd Dobber Wasp gets its name from the fact that they construct their next of mud.  They are typically a nuisance pest, building their mud nests on sheltered sites like eaves, porch ceilings, garages, sheds, barns, open attic, or any protected wall or structure.  The Mudd Dobber Wasp is recognized by its ½ to 1 inch very slender metallic black body.  The nest looks like a clump of mud stuck on to the side of a structure and as the young adult Mudd Dobbers emerge from the nest they leave small holes in the nest, showing the nest is old or inactive. The Mudd Dobber Wasp does not defend their nests, and only rarely sting.  These wasps are beneficial insects and help control spiders.  If control is needed, first treat and control the female Mudd Dobber Wasp and then remove the nest from the structure with a putty knife or scraper.  Activity can be discouraged in a given area by an application of a microencapsulated material on the structure.

If you live in Naples, Fort Myers, or Southwest Florida call 239-455-4300 Collier Pest Control, Southwest Florida’s Pest Authority, for a full explanation about bees, wasps or on any of our services or look us up on our web site at collierpestcontrol.com.  Remember Florida does not have to be shared with insects.

ANTS WHITE FOOT ANT PEST CONTROL EXTERMINATOR FORT MYERS BONITA SPRINGS NAPLES FLORIDA

WHITE FOOT ANTS

The White Footed ant is native to tropical Asia, but has been inadvertently introduce into South Florida.  The White Footed Ant arrived in the Homestead are of Florida in 1986, followed by rapidly spreading up and out expanding throughout the rest of South Florida.

The White Footed Ants are relatively small ants with a black body and yellowish-white feet, called tibia and tarsi.  These ants do not bite or sting, nor have they been reported to cause any type of structural damage.  They are just a nuisance ant attracted to sweet foods.  Thus, it is common to find them foraging indoors around kitchens and bathrooms, and outside on hedges infested with honeydew producing insects, such as aphid and scales.

White Footed Ants in Southwest Florida for many pest control companies, have been extremely difficult to control because of several characteristics of their biology.  One big problem is that they establish colonies of well over a million ants, over half being worker ants.  Workers ants are sterile females that are responsible for foraging for food and caring for the nest.  Another problem is that food ingested by the worker ants is never shared back in the colony, as like most every other type of ant.  These sterile worker ants are capable of laying unfertilized eggs.  These Thinner more fragile non fertile eggs are what the worker ants, larva, and queens in the colony use as their food source, therefore, any toxic bait to kill off ants never reach the ants in a White Foot Ant colony, and only affect the foraging worker ants that eat the insect killing baits.

While White Foote Ants are not directly harmful to humans or pets, their presence within the home is a nuisance. Collier Pest Control, Southwest Florida’s Pest Authority, has developed a 3-step 6-week treatment method to eliminate unwanted White Foote Ants from you home and property.  Collier Pest Control will first use insect killing baits inside you home and attic to eliminate any activity being seen inside your home.  Then we will treat the immediate sides of your home with special insect killing materials to kill any trailing White Foot Ant attempting to enter your home.  The 3-stage of this treatment method is to use special insect killing materials up to 30 or 40 feet around your home, killing off all activity trailing toward your home.  Collier Pest Control will follow up with a service treatment each week for 5 more weeks insuring that no White Foot Ants are infested or entering your home.

If you have been run out of your home by unwanted White Foot Ants and live in Naples, Fort Myers, or Southwest Florida call, 239-455-4300, Collier Pest Control for a complete explanation and free estimate on any of our services, or look us up on our web site at collierpestcontrol.com.  Don’t let insect spoil your beautiful Southwest Florida lifestyle.  Remember, Florida doesn’t have to be shared with insects.

LIZARDS BLACK SPINY TAILED IGUANA PEST CONTROL FORT MYERS BONITA SPRINGS NAPLES FLORIDA

BLACK SPINY-TAILED IGUANA

The Black Spiny-Tailed Iguana is a large bulky lizard native to Mexico and Central America, commonly found in Costa Rica and Honduras.  They were introduced to South Florida over 30 years ago. They have been discovered here in Southwest Florida coastal areas on Gasparilla Island and in adjacent areas, throughout Lee, Charlotte, and Collier counties including Keewaydin Island and Little Marco Island.  It is the largest species in this iguana group and has been recorded as the fastest running lizard on earth, living in the wild up to 20 years.  Black Spiny-Tailed Iguanas have distinctive keeled scales on their long tails, which gives them their common name, Spiny-Tailed.  This lizard tends to be nasty and not tameable and can grow up to the length of over 3 foot and weigh up to 11 pounds. They have a crest of long spines which extends down the center of their back.  Juvenile Black Spiny-tailed Iguanas are mostly green, with the adult Black Spiny-Tail Iguanas usually have a whitish gray or tan ground color with a series of 4-12 well-defined dark dorsal bands that extend nearly to the ventral scales. Males having an orange color around the head and throat.  They are excellent climbers, and prefer a rocky habitat with plenty of crevices to hide in, rocks to bask in the sun on, and nearby trees to climb.  They use their speed, up o 27.7 mph, to escape predators but will lash out with their tails and bite if cornered.  Black Spiny-Tailed Iguanas eat flowers, leaves, stems, and fruit, but they will opportunistically eat small animals, eggs, arthropods, frogs, fish, rodents, bats, small birds, and even hatchling sea turtles, which poses another threat to the endangered native species.  Even though the Black Spiny-Tailed Iguana is farmed and heavily hunted as a food source and for export for the pet trade, it does not appear to be endangered in any of its native territory.

Collier Pest Control is Southwest Florida’s Pest Control Authority.  We are specialist’s in general household pest and termite control. Our approach to tick control is not just with surface sprays.  Collier Pest Control developed a complete thorough Tick Treatment that treats your complete house and every place your pet is active; all the cracks and crevices, voids, windows and door casings, furniture, baseboards, and rugs.

The Brown Dog Tick is the most common tick here in beautiful Southwest Florida.  The Brown Dog Tick does not vector any disease, such as Lyme disease or Rocky Mountain spotted fever.  Ticks are a serious problem and can cause major health problems if allowed to infest your living area.  Ticks are not an insect and are closely related to the spider.  Adult ticks have 8 legs, insects only have 6 legs.  All ticks are parasitic and feed on the blood of animals.  Most ticks spend the majority of their life on or near the ground waiting for a suitable host to come attach themselves on.  Ticks will climb onto an appropriate object, such as a tall blade of grass, bush, fence post, side of a building to wait for a host to pass by. The Brown Dog Tick can live for as long as 200 days without a blood meal.

The female Brown Dog Tick can lay a mass of 1000 to 3000 eggs. These eggs will hatch in 19 to 60 days into a 6 legged, small, immature seed tick. Within 3 to 6 days it will molt and change into an 8 legged nymph tick.  After a blood meal from a host, this nymph will molt in 12 to 29 days into an adult tick.

If you find a tick attached to you or a family member never just pull it off the skin.  A tick is easily removed by first touching the tick with a warm butter knife or alcohol to get it to remove its head from the skin. Then grab the tick and lift it off the skin.

FLEA INFORMATION PEST CONTROL EXTERMINATOR FORT MYERS BONITA SPRINGS NAPLES FLORIDA

INFORMATION ABOUT FLEAS

Fleas are pest to humans and their domestic animals all over the world.  While most fleas prefer non-human hosts, many can and do feed on humans when infestations are heavy or when other hosts are not readily available.

Fleas are small, wingless parasitic insects that are extremely well adapted to their environment.  The first step toward effective control is recognizing two very important factors.  First, the 4 stages of the flea life cycle (egg, larva, pupa, and adult) have to be broken or stopped.  Second, the flea population must be controlled everywhere it exists, on the pet, inside the home, and out in the yard.

                1.  THE EGG STAGE

The eggs are laid loosely and singly on the host.  The eggs are not sticky so when the host shakes, scratches, or moves around the eggs will be deposited in all areas where the hosts rest, sleeps, and is active.

                2.  THE LARVAL STAGE

Flea larva is whitish, legless, and worm like.  Unlike adult fleas, the larvae are free living (non-parasitic) with chewing mouth parts and feed on material available in their environment.   It is necessary for successful development of the larva to feed on organic debris and the adult flea excrement containing dried blood which composes the main diet of the flea larva. Larvae are more sensitive to temperature and humidity than the eggs.  Low humidity, less than 50%, is fatal for flea larvae.  The larval period normally lasts 7-15 days, but can be as long as several months if the environment is less favorable.

                3.  THE PUPAL STAGE

Unlike the egg and larval stage, the pupa stage is very resilient to harsh conditions.  The cocoon serves to protect the pupa from predators and also acts as a barrier against insecticides.  Within the cocoon the pupa changes into a pre-emerged adult flea.  Adults will emerge from the pupa case in 5-7 days under favorable conditions.  In adverse conditions, the pupae and pre-emerged adults can lay quiet within the cocoon for up to a full year.   Flea emergence can be stimulated by body warmth of the host and the pressure made by a host walking on the pre-emerged adult within the cocoon, increased temperatures and mechanical disturbances.

                4.  THE ADULT STAGE

The adult flea has well developed legs for jumping.  Adults have piercing-sucking mouth parts and are usually ready to take a blood meal, their only source of food, 24-48 hours after emerging from the cocoon.  Adult fleas spend 90% of their life on the host and feed many times a day.  On average, the female flea lays 15-20 eggs per day for the 10-14 days that she is fertile.

For an effective flea program to stop any re-infestation of fleas in all areas, the pet, the home, and the yard must be treated.  Pets drop flea eggs anywhere at any time.  After hatching, the flea larva then can migrate to dark low traffic areas where food is available.  All stages of the flea can be carried throughout the house in the laundry, on people or on their clothing.  Also, if the infested pet frequently travels in the family vehicle it may be necessary to treat the vehicle as well.  Outdoor treatment is also necessary when the pets are allowed outside.

Although nearly all adult fleas present at the time of service will be controlled, don’t be alarmed if you see some fleas within a few days to three weeks after treatment.  These are newly emerged adults from the cocoon of the pupa stage.  If these conditions are present after treatment, control the new adults on the pet with bathing or a pet flea insecticide.  Any flea prevention program must include regular grooming and bathing of the pet.  If the pet is not being treated regularly, you could see constant sighting of fleas.  Your home and your yard would not be re-infested but your pet would be infested.

To insure a continuous protection from fleas on your home and yard, we recommend that you renew your flea services at the end of each guarantee period.  If you are looking for a dependable knowledgeable exterminator and live in Naples, Fort Myers, or Southwest Florida call 239-455-4300 Collier Pest Control, Southwest Florida’s Pest Control Authority, for a free estimate and a complete explanation on any of our service, or look us up on our web site at collierpestcontrol.com.  Don’t let unwanted guests spoil your beautiful Southwest Florida lifestyle!  Remember, Florida does not have to be share with insects!
