BLACK SPINY-TAILED IGUANA

 

            The Black Spiny-Tailed Iguana is a large bulky lizard native to Mexico and Central America, commonly found in Costa Rica and Honduras.  They were introduced to South Florida over 30 years ago. They have been discovered here in Southwest Florida coastal areas on Gasparilla Island and in adjacent areas, throughout Lee, Charlotte, and Collier counties including Keewaydin Island and Little Marco Island.  It is the largest species in this iguana group and has been recorded as the fastest running lizard on earth, living in the wild up to 20 years.  Black Spiny-Tailed Iguanas have distinctive keeled scales on their long tails, which gives them their common name, Spiny-Tailed.  This lizard tends to be nasty and not tameable and can grow up to the length of over 3 foot and weigh up to 11 pounds. They have a crest of long spines which extends down the center of their back.  Juvenile Black Spiny-tailed Iguanas are mostly green, with the adult Black Spiny-Tail Iguanas usually have a whitish gray or tan ground color with a series of 4-12 well-defined dark dorsal bands that extend nearly to the ventral scales. Males having an orange color around the head and throat.  They are excellent climbers, and prefer a rocky habitat with plenty of crevices to hide in, rocks to bask in the sun on, and nearby trees to climb.  They use their speed, up o 27.7 mph, to escape predators but will lash out with their tails and bite if cornered.  Black Spiny-Tailed Iguanas eat flowers, leaves, stems, and fruit, but they will opportunistically eat small animals, eggs, arthropods, frogs, fish, rodents, bats, small birds, and even hatchling sea turtles, which poses another threat to the endangered native species.  Even though the Black Spiny-Tailed Iguana is farmed and heavily hunted as a food source and for export for the pet trade, it does not appear to be endangered in any of its native territory.
