LIZARDS TODAY GECKO PEST CONTROL NAPLES BONITA SPRINGS FORT MYERS FLORIDA

TOKAY GECKO

The Tokay Gecko is a native of Northeast India, the Philippines, Indonesia, and New Guinea, and has been introduced into Belize, some Caribbean Islands, Texas, Hawaii, and Florida.  It got its name from the unusual vocalization it makes, which sounds like “to-kay”.  The Tokay Gecko is blue green with rust colored spots.  It is one of the largest species of gecko in the world, with adult males growing up to 12 to14 inches long, females are slightly smaller averaging 8-10 inches, both with a nasty bite. The body of a Tokay Gecko is cylindrical, squat, and somewhat flattened on the upper side.  The head is large and set off from the neck and they have large, prominent eyes with vertically-slit pupils. The eyelids of these animals are fused together and transparent.  Their ears can be seen on the outside of the geckos as small holes on both sides of their head.  It is possible to see straight through the head of these geckoes through their ears. Tokay Geckos spend most of their time in trees and other high places. Their toes have fine setae on them, allowing them to cling to vertical and overhanging surfaces and move at fast speeds.

They can often be found dwelling in and around human settlements where they can find easy shelter and are often valued for their insect pest control.  They are ravenous nocturnal feeders and eat nearly anything small enough for them to overpower, including newborn mice. Wild Tokay Geckos have an average lifespan of 7-10 years.  In captivity, they can live up to 20 years with proper care. In parts of Southeast Asia, Tokay Geckos are regarded as harbingers of good luck, good fortune, and fertility.

ANTS BIG HEAD ANT PEST CONTROL EXTERMINATOR NAPLES BONITA SPRINGS FORT MYERS FLORIDA

BIG HEAD ANTS

LAWN TREATMENTS

The Big Headed Ant is a very successful invasive species that is sometimes considered a danger to native ants and has been nominated as one of the 100 "World's Worst" invaders.  Big Head Ants has been a pest in southern Florida for many years, and according to reports by pest control operators, it is becoming an even more pervasive nuisance as it displaces other ants.  Big Head Ants can be found nesting in disturbed soils, lawns, flowerbeds, under objects, such as bricks, cement slabs, flower pots, around trees or water pipes, along the base of structures, and walkways, where displaced soil is usually observed from the action of ants digging below the surface.  It is possible that the increase in Big Head Ant infestations was augmented by several years of excessive hurricane activity in Florida that damaged lawns and killed trees which necessitated the use of increased amounts of sod and other replacement vegetation that may have been infested with this ant. The Big Head Ant does not sting or cause any structural damage, and usually does not bite unless the nest is disturbed, and even then, the bite is not painful.

Big Head Ants are a soil-nesting ant that leaves piles of loose sandy soil. Homeowners are annoyed by these "dirt piles" and by ants foraging in bathrooms, kitchens, around doors, and windows, as well as on exterior paved or brick walkways or driveways. Control of Big Head Ants is difficult because the ant colonies are numerous and populations usually extend across property lines. The Big Head Ant receives its common name from the large-sized head of the major worker, or "soldier." Minor workers are small reddish brown ants.

Collier Pest Control Southwest Florida’s Pest Authority has developed a successful 3 step treatment method to eliminate and control Big Head Ants.  We will treat your lawn with growth regulator materials to eliminate the development of queens producing new ants and stop the development of the larva stage (the baby ants) from growing up into adult Big Head Ants. With the addition of interior ant baiting, this 3 step lawn treatment will eliminate Big Head Ants quickly and is guaranteed for a full 90 days.

Collier Pest Control can continue to keep the Big Head Ants away with a quarterly Big Head Ant Lawn Maintenance program and stop all unwanted Big Head Ants from moving back into your home and lawn.

If you live in Naples, Bonita Springs, Fort Myers, or anywhere in beautiful Southwest Florida call 239-455-4300 Collier Pest Control for a full explanation on our exclusive Big Head Ant Lawn Treatments or on any of our services.  All our services and most of Florida’s problem pests are also on our web site at collierpestcontrol.com.  Remember Florida does not have to be shared with insects

FROGS TREE FROGS PEST CONTROL NAPLES BONITA SPRINGS FORT MYERS FLORIDA

TREE FROGS

Frogs are common throughout the world. There are over 85 species here in the United States. The most common species include tree frogs, toads, and bullfrogs. Tree frogs and bullfrogs are most common where there is adequate water for their survival and reproduction. Toads are more prevalent where it is dry. Though tree frogs are considered beneficial because they eat insects, in some cases local populations can become a nuisance.

Tree frogs can become a problem for many reasons. Tree frogs mostly live in trees but will find their way into homes. Once there, they will hide behind shutters, under siding window frames, siding, rain gutters, overhanging bricks and facia boards away from sunlight in shaded areas are all prime tree frog hiding sites during the day. Tree frogs like these areas and at night they will emerge to feed.

The problem with having tree frogs on your home is that they tend to make a mess. Their droppings will quickly accumulate below where they are nesting. Tree frog droppings look a lot like rat droppings and can easily fool people into believing they have a rodent problem.  While frogs in and of themselves may be harmless, but they often will leave feces and a sticky residue wherever they go.

Collier Pest Control Southwest Florida’s Pest Authority can help with our Frog and Lizard Repellant Treatment.  We can treat all areas around your home or business where tree frogs are roosting, such as: the soffits, eaves, lighting, garage, doors, window sills, pool cage, lanai furniture, and even around plants.  This all natural clear treatment material does not stain.  It repels frogs, toads, and lizards away by releasing a scent certain animals can detect and don’t like. Because this is an all natural treatment, monthly applications should be made to continue keeping your home or business Frog, Toad, and Lizard Free.

If you live in Naples, Bonita Springs, Fort Myers, or anywhere in Beautiful Southwest Florida and are having a Frog, Toad, or Lizard problem, call Collier Pest Control for a full explanation of our Frog and Lizard Repellant Treatment, or on any of our services, or look us up on our web site at collierpestcontrol.com.  Remember Florida does not have to be shared with pests.

WASPS THE PAPER WASP PEST CONTROL EXTERMINATOR NAPLES BONITA SPRINGS FORT MYERS FLORIDA

THE PAPER WASP

The Paper Wasp gets its name from the paper like material of which they construct their nests.  This wasp is recognized by its 5/8 to3/4 inch brownish to black bodies with yellow or red markings.  The Paper Wasps hang their comb nests under twigs and branches of trees and shrubs which can cause concern when ornamental shrubs and hedges are trimmed or fruit is being picked form trees.  They also like to hang their nests from porch ceilings, the top member of window and door frames, soffits, eaves, attic rafters, deck floor joists and railings, play ground equipment, almost any protected place imaginable.  If the nest is contacted or disturbed, the Paper Wasps on the nest at the time will defend the nest vigorously and the offender of the nest will probably get stung.  If in a breeze or wind when the Paper Wasps get disturbed, stand still and the wasps will fly around but will not follow you.  If you run the vacuum of wind from your movement will lead the wasps to you and you will get stung.  These wasps are beneficial insects by helping to control many types of insect pests.  If you need to control these wasps, it is essential that you control and kill the adults early in the morning or at night when all the wasps will be tending to the nest, then remove the nest.

If you live in Naples, Fort Myers, or Southwest Florida call 239-455-4300 Collier Pest Control, Southwest Florida’s Pest Authority, for a full explanation about bees, wasps or on any of our services or look us up on our web site at collierpestcontrol.com.  Remember Florida does not have to be shared with insects.

ANTS WHITE FOOT ANTS PEST CONTROL EXTERMINATOR NAPLES BONITA SPRINGS FORT MYERS FLORIDA

WHITE FOOT ANTS

The White Footed ant is native to tropical Asia, but has been inadvertently introduce into South Florida.  The White Footed Ant arrived in the Homestead are of Florida in 1986, followed by rapidly spreading up and out expanding throughout the rest of South Florida.

The White Footed Ants are relatively small ants with a black body and yellowish-white feet, called tibia and tarsi.  These ants do not bite or sting, nor have they been reported to cause any type of structural damage.  They are just a nuisance ant attracted to sweet foods.  Thus, it is common to find them foraging indoors around kitchens and bathrooms, and outside on hedges infested with honeydew producing insects, such as aphid and scales.

White Footed Ants in Southwest Florida for many pest control companies, have been extremely difficult to control because of several characteristics of their biology.  One big problem is that they establish colonies of well over a million ants, over half being worker ants.  Workers ants are sterile females that are responsible for foraging for food and caring for the nest.  Another problem is that food ingested by the worker ants is never shared back in the colony, as like most every other type of ant.  These sterile worker ants are capable of laying unfertilized eggs.  These Thinner more fragile non fertile eggs are what the worker ants, larva, and queens in the colony use as their food source, therefore, any toxic bait to kill off ants never reach the ants in a White Foot Ant colony, and only affect the foraging worker ants that eat the insect killing baits.

While White Foote Ants are not directly harmful to humans or pets, their presence within the home is a nuisance. Collier Pest Control, Southwest Florida’s Pest Authority, has developed a 3-step 6-week treatment method to eliminate unwanted White Foote Ants from you home and property.  Collier Pest Control will first use insect killing baits inside you home and attic to eliminate any activity being seen inside your home.  Then we will treat the immediate sides of your home with special insect killing materials to kill any trailing White Foot Ant attempting to enter your home.  The 3-stage of this treatment method is to use special insect killing materials up to 30 or 40 feet around your home, killing off all activity trailing toward your home.  Collier Pest Control will follow up with a service treatment each week for 5 more weeks insuring that no White Foot Ants are infested or entering your home.

If you have been run out of your home by unwanted White Foot Ants and live in Naples, Fort Myers, or Southwest Florida call, 239-455-4300, Collier Pest Control for a complete explanation and free estimate on any of our services, or look us up on our web site at collierpestcontrol.com.  Don’t let insect spoil your beautiful Southwest Florida lifestyle.  Remember, Florida doesn’t have to be shared with insects.

TERMITES YEARLY FREE INSPECTION PEST CONTROL EXTERMINATOR NAPLES BONITA SPRINGS FORT MYERS FLORIDA

WHY YOU SHOULD HAVE A YEARLY

FREE TERMITE INSPECTION

HERE’S WHY!

  • ONE IN THREE HOMES THAT SHOW NO SIGNS OF TERMITES HAVE                  ACTIVITY WITHIN TWO FEET OF THE FOUNDATION!
  • TWO OF THREE HOMES BUILT SINCE 1987 WILL HAVE A TERMITE                   INFESTATION WITHIN FIVE YEARS
  • IN MULTIPLE BUILDING SITUATIONS, EVERY BUILDING WAS BUILT THE SAME, USING THE SAME TECHNIQUES AND MATERIALS.  WHEN TERMITE PROTECTION FAILS IN ONE BUILDING, IT IS ONLY A MATTER OF TIME BEFORE THE REST WILLFAIL ALSO

How can you tell if you have a termite problem?    It is very difficult.  Termites, by their very nature, remain hidden.  They avoid open areas and remain buried deep in the wood that they are eating.  Often, they are noticed only AFTER damage has been done to the structure.

An important point to remember is that subterranean termites work slowly. There are many, many variables when considering how fast or slow a termite’s colony will damage a home.  Size of the colony, temperature, moisture, time of year, etc all affect the speed of damage.  A small colony can typically eat six inches of a 2X4 in one year.

If you have regular routine yearly termite inspections of your home or business, you can find out if you have a termite problem or not.  Since they eat very slowly, even if they have entered your home or business you can correct the problem before they cause an extensive costly amount of damage.

Collier Pest Control now offers a diagnostic tool to help answer the question, “Do we have a termite problem?” We will install at NO CHARGE, to any of our regular Collier Complete General Household Treatment customers, 8-10 termite monitors around each building.  In 90 days, we will check each monitor, and report to you the location of any monitors that have termite activity.  This will help show you, if and where you may have termite activity close to your foundation making your home a high risk account.

This helpful tool is available to you at Collier Pest Control!  If you live in Naples, Fort Myers, or Southwest Florida call to schedule a FREE termite inspection of your home or business.  More information on Termites or any of our unwanted Florida problem pest can be found on our web site at collierpestcontrol.com. Don’t let unwanted guest spoil your beautiful Southwest Florida lifestyle.  Remember, Florida does not have to be shared with insects!

MORE TERMITE INFORMATION:

The control of subterranean termites is often a major expense and like any other household expense should be carefully considered. As you have read above that termite’s eat very slowly.  Do not rush into an agreement with any firm before you thoroughly investigate what is offered.  Subterranean Termites, as the name suggests, live in the soil, in most cases.  In some cases, when there is adequate moisture available within the home, they will “nest” in the home and not return to the colony located in the soil. The subterranean termite is an important part of our environment.  In a natural setting, this termite recycles dead trees back into the soil. Without the termite, our forests would be littered with dead trees as wood “rot” cannot keep up.  No one has been able to convince the termite that “dead” wood in your home should not be eaten.  The termite sees the wood in your home as just another food source.  The main portion of the colony stays in the ground and the workers, (cream colored & wingless), come into the home through “mud” tubes or cracks in the concrete as small as 1/64 of an inch.  Once inside, they will eat the wood and bring it back to their nest mates in the ground.

During the spring of each year, the termites produce a winged alate (Swarmers).  The purpose of the swarmers is to fly up into the air, find the opposite sex, mate, and start new colonies.   Both the male and the female break off their wings and look for a suitable nesting area.  In the forest, this would be a dead, damp decaying tree on the forest floor.  When they swarm into the home, in most cases, they cannot damage the home, or start a nest as the area is much too dry. So unless you have a wet, rotten log in your living room, the alates cannot hurt you.   Our experience has shown that there are normally three swarms.  The first swarm is the major one, the second swarm is often 1/10th in size, and the last swarm is normally just a few insects.  Subterranean termites normally avoid light.  When swarmers are created by the colony, the opposite happens.  The swarmers are attracted to light when they emerge, and are often found in window sills.   As they come out in large numbers, they can be an awful nuisance.  Try not to spray them with common household insecticides, as these products contain oils that can stain and make a mess.  The easiest way to remove these alates is to vacuum them up.  They will die shortly in the dry environment of the vacuum bag.  Often, these swarmers will emerge within 30-60- days AFTER A HOME HAS BEEN TREATED. This is a defensive measure by the colony.  The colony is under stress from the treatment and will often respond by sending the remaining swarmers out.

This helpful information is available to you from Collier Pest Control!  If you live in Naples, Fort Myers, or Southwest Florida call to schedule a FREE termite inspection of your home or business.  More information on Termites or any of our unwanted Florida problem pest can be found on our web site at collierpestcontrol.com. FLIES BLOW FLIES PEST CONTROL EXTERMINATOR NAPLES BONITA SPRINGS FORT MYERS FLORIDA

BLOW FLIES

Blow flies and flesh flies are very common flies associated with dead animals. Blow flies can be found in almost every known terrestrial habitat and they are found in association with human civilization throughout the world. Blow flies include a number of species including the common Blue Bottle Fly and the Green Bottle Fly. Adult flies are metallic blue, green, copper or black colored flies that otherwise resemble large house flies in appearance. Other blow flies include the Black Blow Fly and the Cluster Fly.

The larvae (maggots) of these flies feed on dead animal tissue and as such are beneficial in nature as decomposer of dead animal carcasses. The appearance of these flies or maggots in the house typically indicates that an animal (i.e. rodent, bird, etc.) has died within the walls or in the attic. The larvae infest the animal carcass for 5-10 days before they leave the carcass and wander in search of a dry place to pupate. Maggots have hook-like mouthparts. Adults have sponge-like mouthparts similar to those of house flies. These maggots are unsavory but harmless.

Female flies lay eggs on or near suitable habitats. Tiny maggots hatch from eggs in 6 to 48 hours. After 2 to 7 days they form a pupa (cocoon), Adult flies emerge 10 to 17 days after the formation of the pupa (cocoon). Development from egg to adult occurs in 16 to 35 days, depending on temperature and environmental conditions. The adults can live up to six weeks.

Adult blow flies are attracted to nectar, carrion, garbage, bloody or soiled hair, fur, or wool.

Sanitation via removal and proper disposal of garbage, carcasses and similar breeding media is probably the most satisfactory method of limiting blow fly populations. The only necessary control for flesh fly maggots is to vacuum or sweep them up and discard. Then check for dead animals in the walls, attic, etc.

If you live in Naples, Fort Myers, Bonita Springs, or anywhere in Southwest Florida and have blow flies or any other pest problem, call our office for a full explanation to any of our services or look us up on our website at collierpestcontrol.com.  Remember Florida does not have to be shared with insects!

ANTS PHARAOH ANTS PEST CONTROL EXTERMINATOR NAPLES BONITA SPRINGS FORT MYERS FLORIDA

Pharaoh Ants

If you have found out, you have Pharaoh Ants. This will give you a start on what to do about them.

The first thing you need to know is Pharaoh ants have multiple queen colonies. Each colony can have as many as one hundred queens or more and up to one million workers, and there may be more than one colony around your home. This is the reason homeowners are unsuccessful in ridding their homes of these ants. Each time killing bait or chemical spray is used on trailing ants the problem is made worse. The queens that remain in the nest produce more eggs to rebuild the nest bigger than before to ensure proper care of the colony.

Pharaoh ants enter your home or building by hitch hiking a ride in a box, furniture, grocery bag, or by walking in from next door. It usually takes three to four months to begin seeing worker ants foraging for food on your counters, and by this time the colony is becoming well established. Pharaoh ants will feed on a variety of food sources. These ants need protein, carbohydrates, and fat in their diet and can be seen eating anything from soap to cosmetics, chemicals, dead insects, and food crumbs we leave behind.

The only effective method of controlling Pharaoh ants is using sterilizing bait followed up by killing bait. Traditional chemical or baiting methods will not eliminate Pharaoh ants. NONE!

Collier Pest Control, Southwest Florida’s Pest Authority, has developed a five week baiting program proven successful over many years to eliminate your home, or building of Pharaoh ants. This program utilizes sterilizing bait that halts egg production and stops larva from becoming adult worker ants. We then apply an appropriate killing bait to eliminate the thousands of worker ants in each colony. Finally, Collier Pest Control protects your home with our proven general household treatment method called “THE PRESCRIPTION TREATMENT SYSTEM”.

Don’t suffer another day with these ants. If you live in Naples, Fort Myers, or anywhere in Southwest Florida call 239-455-4300 Collier Pest Control for a full explanation on Pharaoh Ants or any of our services, or look us up on our web site at collierpestcontrol.com. Remember Florida home doesn’t have to be shared with insects!

PEST CONTROL TOXIC CONCERNS NAPLES BONITA SPRINGS FORT MYERS FLORIDA

PEST CONTROL CONCERNS

The concerns most people have with pest control service is just a lack of information.  At Collier Pest Control we choose our products by how toxic the product is and the formulation of the product.  The first thoughts we have in how we chose our products is how toxic the product is to our customers and technicians.

ALL OUR PRODUCTS ARE LESS TOXIC THAN MOST HOUSEHOLD CLEANERS.

Today’s modern convinces include many natural and manmade products to give us a higher standard of living.  When purchasing these products, there is a personal responsibility to pick and choose the product that combines proper safety and environmental protection for the usage needed.  Most people are not aware of the level of toxicity a product has when using it.  The general public also is not aware that the government has given us a standard code of toxicity on which each product is measured.  The level of toxicity must be put on the front of the label on any non food product produced just below the words KEEP OUR THE REACH OF CHILDREN.  The levels are NO WORD being the lowest, CAUTION, WARNING, and  DANGER.  All our products our within the caution level of toxic levels.  Many household products fall within the warning and danger levels of toxicity.

The second thoughts we have in how we chose our products is to how effective they will be in controlling our Florida problem pests.  We chose micro-cap products and crack and crevice products produced by Whitmire Labs.  Today's pest control materials are now designed to last at least a period of 90 days in most environmental conditions.

Most of Collier Pest Control’s outside materials are formulated in a micro-cap solution, similar to your cold micro encapsulated cold products, to give all our customers protection for the full guarantee period when treating the mulch beds, flower beds, eaves, soffits, and 5-10 feet around the perimeter of  a home.  This means it will deteriorate slowly and be not neutralized when exposed to sunlight, rain, or even lawn sprinklers outside.

Our interior materials will not be exposed to those conditions to shorten the life of the material, so they will normally have a longer residual life.

The materials we provide for our interior that are not micro-caped are crack and crevice materials produced by BASF and Whitmire Labs.  These materials have pure active ingredients with no added water or oils to be mixed with.  This allows the product to be even more effective and give a longer life for the interior, in the cracks and crevices.

All Collier Pest Control’s interior application of materials is in a crack, crevice, or void.  This way the materials are in areas where insects will either hide or travel through.  By placing the materials in cracks and crevices, customers or their pets cannot be in touch with any of the materials and the product will last the full guaranteed period, since they cannot be touched or washed away.

If you have safety concerns about having pest control services to your home or business, call Collier Pest Control, 239-455-4300, or look us up on our web site at collierpestcontrol.com for a full explanation on our services and products we use.

RODENTS ROOF RATS PEST CONTRROL EXTERMINATOR NAPLES BONITA SPRINGS FORT MYERS FLORIDA

RODENTS

ROOF RATS AND MICE

Collier Pest Control is Southwest Florida’s Pest Authority, Including Rodent Control!

The Roof Rat is an introduced species of rat native to southern Asia.  It was brought to America on the first ships to reach the New World and has spread around the world.  This rat is the same species that carried the bubonic plague around the world and is also the reservoir host for murine typhus.  Roof Rats are the worst rodent pest in the State of Florida and most abundant.  A typical roof rat is between 13 and 18 inches long from nose to tail.  It is commonly known as the black rat or palm squirrel, but is often dark brown in color.  Unlike other rats, their tails are longer than the length of their bodies and they have large ears.  Roof rats will nest in trees, woodpiles, garbage and plants, but they generally like inside high places, like attics.  They are good climbers and only need a hole the size of a quarter to gain entry.  They primarily consume fruits and nuts, although they will eat anything.  They tend to hoard food for consuming later.  They are known for hollowing out citrus fruit in trees.  Control of roof rats is not an easy task.  Professional Pest Management is needed to control these pests.  The tools of a Professional Pest Control Technician includes; the knowledge of cultural control (prevention and habitat management): Physical control (trapping and exclusion): Biological control (predators like snakes): and if needed chemical control (rodent baits and repellents).

The Florida House Mouse weighs less than an ounce.  It can fit in a crack of only a quarter inch.  They can and do get everywhere.  If your house has food and any small openings, eventually mice will find their way in.  A single mouse can’t eat a whole lot, but they nibble on many foods and defecate on everything, mice destroy considerably more food than they consume.  They can also spread diseases.  Some examples of diseases that can be spread by mice or rats are salmonellosis (food poisoning), rickett-sialpox, and lymphocytic choriomeningitis. Mice may also carry leptospirosis, ratbite fever, tapeworms, and organisms that can cause ringworm (a fungal skin disease) in humans.  They like to chew and gnaw everything, and will often chew on electrical wires, creating a fire hazard.

Collier Pest Control can eliminate unwanted rodent infestations, with our exclusive Rodent Treatment.  We will place control trapping equipment in all active areas on the interior of your home or building and set up exterior rodent control baiting stations around the outside of your home or building.  We then will monitor and remove any trapped rodents every other day until there is no more rodents active inside your home or building.  Permanent Exterior Rodent Baiting Stations are available for an extra onetime fee.

MOTHS PLASTER BAG WORMS PEST CONTROL EXTERMINATOR NAPLES BONITA SPRINGS FORT MYERS FLORIDA

PLASTER BAG WORMS

The Plaster Bag Worm is similar in appearance and closely related to clothes moths.    This unique looking creature is easily seen on light colored walls.  Close examination of the house may reveal bagworms attached to the underside of chairs, bookcases, and other furniture.  They are often found along the edge of rugs, near baseboards, or on the lower edges of walls.  Bagworms are quite common in garages and underneath buildings.  This larva mainly feed on spider webs; however, they will also feed on fabrics made of natural fiber

The larva of bagworms lives in a flatten gray, watermelon seed shaped case about ½ inch long.  The case is constructed of silken fiber and sand particles, lint, paint fragments, and other debris attached.  The case has a slit like opening at each end, and the larva is able to move around and feed from either end.

Control of the Plaster Bagworm Larva is similar to control of clothes moths.  Good housekeeping is important, especially the removal of spider webs.  Sweep down and remove any spider webs and Plaster Bagworm casings.

Collier Pest Control can control these pests with our “Collier Complete” pest control service.  This service thoroughly treats all the cracks and crevices the inside of your home and completes the service with a broadcast spraying of the eaves, soffits, flowerbeds, entry ways, and 5 to 10 feet around your home.

MOTHS LESSER WAX MOTH PEST CONTROL EXTERMINATOR NAPLES BONITA SPRINGS FORT MYERS FLORIDA

LESSER WAX MOTH

 “Better known as Waxworms”

The Lesser Wax Moth is a rather small plain looking moth that has an interesting life history.  First seen in North American in 1806 and believed to have been imported there with honeybees from Europe.  The adults are described as having a narrow creamy white body with a brown head and is about 10-13mm in length. The damaging larvae are yellowish tan that forms a white cocoon in frass. They typically reside in milder climates, but prevail in year round warm climates such as Florida, where they are a serious pest problem with stored honey suppliers.

The adult moths are attracted to light. Both Lesser Wax Moth eggs and larvae can usually be found in bee colonies, but are routinely eliminated by worker bees and the moths never build to large population levels.

The larvae feed on the wax of old honeycombs in beehives, dried vegetables and fruit, stored pollen, horn shavings, cork, refined sugar, and dead insects.  The adult stage of the Lesser Wax Moth does not eat. The larva is the stage that causes the damage.

Control of the Lesser Wax Moth with beekeepers is now limited because many fumigates are no longer available.  Extreme heat and cold are limited.  Soon beekeepers will be left without any means to chemically control the Lesser Wax Moth.  If you are seeing Lesser Wax Moths from a beehive that was removed from your home in the past, or seeing the moths around your home, Collier Pest Control has the appropriate materials and control methods to eliminate any unwanted Lesser Wax Moths from your home. Call our office for a complete explanation on the Lesser Wax Moth or any of our services.  Information on all of our service and most of Florida’s problem pests can be found on our website at collierpestcontrol.com.  Remember Florida’s does not have to be shared with insects!

Both Silverfish and Firebrats have flattened bodies, broad at the front and tapering gradually toward the rear (carrot shaped).  They both have three long slender appendages found at the rear of the body and two long slender antennae attached to their heads.  Both are wingless with their bodies covered with scales.  Silverfish are shiny silver gray or pearl gray in color and Firebrats are mottled gray in color.  Both are active at night and hide during the day.

LAWN FUNGUS FAIRY RING FUNGUS PEST CONTROL EXTERMINATOR NAPLES BONITA SPRINGS FORT MYERS FLORIDA

FAIRY RING FUNGUS

FAIRY RING:          Fairy Ring Fungus is difficult to control on all grasses.  Initially, the grass is stimulated and greens up in a circular pattern.  In a few weeks, the grass in these areas will begin to decline.  Mushrooms are often present in the areas affected.  Fertilizers and watering often help in the declining areas.

The elimination of most fungi can be prevented or controlled with traditional spraying or dusting.  To repeat, this is not a cure.  To prevent these fungi from appearing and damaging your turf, the turf must be sprayed before and not after the disease strikes.  It must be kept on the turf as constantly as possible for the period the disease period is likely to attack.

Collier Pest Control does not offer monthly or other scheduled turf maintenance programs.  Collier Pest Control does offer one time correction treatments for fungi and other turf damaging problems. If you have been told or suspect you may have a fungus problem in your lawn, call Collier Pest Control, 239-455-4300 for a Free Inspection or a complete explanation to any of our services.  You also can look us up on our web site at collierpestcontrol.com or Email us at info@collierpestcontrol.com.  Remember Florida does not have to be shared with insects.

TICKS BROWN DOG TICK PEST CONTROL EXTERMINATOR NAPLES BONITA SPRINGS FORT MYERS FLORIDA

TICK SERVICE

Collier Pest Control is Southwest Florida’s Pest Control Authority.  We are specialist’s in general household pest and termite control. Our approach to tick control is not just with surface sprays.  Collier Pest Control developed a complete thorough Tick Treatment that treats your complete house and every place your pet is active; all the cracks and crevices, voids, windows and door casings, furniture, baseboards, and rugs.

The Brown Dog Tick is the most common tick here in beautiful Southwest Florida.  The Brown Dog Tick does not vector any disease, such as Lyme disease or Rocky Mountain spotted fever.  Ticks are a serious problem and can cause major health problems if allowed to infest your living area.  Ticks are not an insect and are closely related to the spider.  Adult ticks have 8 legs, insects only have 6 legs.  All ticks are parasitic and feed on the blood of animals.  Most ticks spend the majority of their life on or near the ground waiting for a suitable host to come attach themselves on.  Ticks will climb onto an appropriate object, such as a tall blade of grass, bush, fence post, side of a building to wait for a host to pass by. The Brown Dog Tick can live for as long as 200 days without a blood meal.

The female Brown Dog Tick can lay a mass of 1000 to 3000 eggs. These eggs will hatch in 19 to 60 days into a 6 legged, small, immature seed tick. Within 3 to 6 days it will molt and change into an 8 legged nymph tick.  After a blood meal from a host, this nymph will molt in 12 to 29 days into an adult tick.

If you find a tick attached to you or a family member never just pull it off the skin.  A tick is easily removed by first touching the tick with a warm butter knife or alcohol to get it to remove its head from the skin. Then grab the tick and lift it off the skin.

Don’t be over whelmed with a tick infestation in your home. If you are looking for a dependable knowledgeable exterminator and live in Naples, Fort Myers, or Southwest Florida call 239-455-4300 Collier Pest Control for a free estimate and a complete explanation on any of our services, or look us up on our web site at collierpestcontrol.com.  Don’t let unwanted guests spoil your beautiful Southwest Florida lifestyle.  Remember, Florida does not have to be shared with insects!

SNAILS FLORIDA TREE SNAILS PEST CONTROL NAPLES BONITA SPRINGS FORT MYERS FLORIDA

FLORIDA TREE SNAILS

A number of terrestrial snails occur in Florida. Snails are important in the conversion of plant matter (often in the form of algae, fungi, or plant detritus) into animal material. Thus, they are important food for some forms of wildlife that are carnivorous or omnivorous. And, of course, sometimes humans eat snails.

A number of species are known from Central and South America and some Caribbean Islands. The Florida tree snail is a mollusk that lives in a colorful, cone-shaped shell. It grows to two inches in length, on average, but may reach three.   The shell size and thickness vary with location, color variety, food, and time of year.

Upon entering a tropical hardwood hammock in south Florida, The eyes then focus on what appear to be porcelain ornaments hung on the trunks of wild tamarind and Jamaica dogwood. The Florida tree snail inhabits tropical hardwood hammocks in extreme southern mainland Florida, and in the Florida Keys.

The main threat to the Florida tree snail is the loss of habitat.  Its habitat selection is extremely specific as the species prefers smooth barked trees in tropical hardwood hammocks.  Florida tree snails also face the threat of fire ants, which have been known to kill tree snails during their times of hibernation  Tree snails in the Lower Keys face the danger of hurricane storm surge and sea level rise.

The shell is secreted by a part of the body called the mantle, and the shell consists principally of calcium carbonate. Snails secrete an acidic material from the sole of their foot that dissolves calcium in the soil and allows uptake so the shell can be secreted. Calcium carbonate also is deposited in the shell of their eggs. Tree snails are normally found on the ground only during egg-deposition or when dislodged from their perches.

If you live in Naples, Bonita Springs, Fort Myers, or anywhere in Southwest Florida and would like more information on the Florida Tree Snail; call our office or look us up on our website at collierpestcontrol.com.  Remember Florida does not have to be shared with pests.

ANTS GHOST ANTS PEST CONTROL EXTERMINATOR FORT MYERS NAPLES BONITA SPRINGS FLORIDA

GHOST ANTS

The Ghost Ant has become the number one pest ant found in Southwest Florida. This ant is identified by the worker ants running erratically and rapidly on a set trail that can be traced back to the nest.  They are very tiny, about 1/32 of an inch long, and derives its name from the fact that it is very difficult to see.  The head and thorax of the Ghost Ant is dark in color and the abdomen and legs are very pale.  This forces a person to look very closely at surfaces just to see the workers moving about.  They will create trails from just a few ants to hundreds.

These trails can usually be located along building foundations and up the walls outdoors.  Ghost ants will readily trail down branches of trees and shrubs into the structure, and through cracks around eaves and soffits.  The Ghost Ant's primary habitat is outdoors.  They will nest in the soil, dead tree limbs, under stones, and in hollow cavities of plants.  Inside, the Ghost Ant will nest inside wall voids, behind base boards, and under cabinets.

Each Ghost Ant colony is moderate in size, with thousands of workers and numerous reproductive queens.  New colonies are started by "budding" where one or more reproductive queens, together with workers and brood (larvae and pupae), move away from the original colony.

The worker Ghost Ant is very fond of honeydew secreted by aphids, but will also feed upon live and dead insects.  Moisture is a limiting factor in the survival of Ghost Ants. They have a very high need for moisture.

Conditions which result in excess moisture such as poor drainage or plumbing leaks should be corrected.  If possible, a vegetation free border should be installed around the foundation.  Branches of trees and shrubs which

touch the structure should be trimmed back.  Successful control of the Ghost Ant depends upon the ability to locate

the foraging ants and  the nest sites.  The liberal use of bait in proper locations works well when combined with an exterior power spray treatment.  The Ghost Ant can often be controlled within a few days.

Don’t let insect change your lifestyle in beautiful Southwest Florida.  If you live in Naples, Fort Myers, or anywhere in Southwest Florida call 239-455-4300 Collier Pest Control today for a complete explanation and free estimate on any of our services, or look us up on our web site at collierpestcontrol.com.  Remember, Florida does not have to be shared with insects!

TERMITES DRYWOOD TERMITE PEST CONTROL EXTERMINATOR FORT MYERS NAPLES BONITA SPRINGS FLORIDA

DRYWOOD TERMITES

DRYWOOD TERMITE PELLETS

Drywood Termites as well as other termites dwell in Florida.  Drywood Termites infest dry wood and do not require contact with the soil.  Other types of termites need to nest in the soil in order to survive.

Drywood Termites are a social insect that live in colonies.  The colonies are composed of kings, queens and soldiers.  There is no worker caste of termite as in other types of termites. The work or foraging for food is done by the immature termites before they become adults.  These nymphs, the immature termites, which are most numerous castes, are white and wingless.  Kings and Queens Termites perform the reproductive function of the colony.  They are light to dark brown and 1/3 to one inch in length.  The Soldiers guard the colony against invaders such as ants.  They are white and wingless with large brownish heads and jaws.  The soldiers and immature remain inside the wood at all times.

Drywood Termites are more common along coastal areas, although they are also found inland.  Drywood Termite food consists of cellulose obtained from wood.  Infestations of Drywood Termites may be found in almost any product containing cellulose.  They are most commonly found infesting attics, window sills, door frames, woodwork in buildings and furniture.

Detecting Drywood Termites infestations may be noticed in several ways.  One way is during the early months of the year.  Drywood Termite Kings and Queens emerge from the colonies as swarms.  The purpose of these swarms is to establish new colonies.  The appearance of winged termites in the home is an indication of probable infestation; however, they may have come in from outside.  Swarming termites are attracted to light.  Swarming termites may be found around window sills or lights.  Shortly after emerging from the colony, swarming termites land and lose their wings.  If the swarming termites do not find a suitable nesting area, they will die.

A common way to detect Drywood Termites is that Drywood Termites unlike other types of termites excrete pellets of partly digested wood.  These pellets are straw-colored to reddish brown and about the size of sand.  The pellets are pushed from the galleries and found on are surfaces beneath the infested wood.

An experienced eye can detect Drywood Termites in an advanced stage of infestation from surface blistering.  Drywood Termites sometimes tunnel close to the surface giving the wood a blistered appearance.

Preventative measures for the Drywood Termite is limited at best.  Any opening to windows and attics should be screened.  Any cracks or voids should be caulked or filled with wood filler.  The use of termite resistant woods such as Redwood, Bald Cypress, Mahogany, Spanish cedar, and commercial pressure treated wood will resist Drywood Termites for several years until weathering makes it susceptible to infestation.

Drywood Termites require a completely different control method; therefore’ the infestation must be correctly identified first.  If detected in the early stages and damage is localized, a Drywood Termite colony may be controlled by removing and replacing the damaged wood or by the application of a termite labeled insecticide.  If the infestation is too extensive and advanced for local treatment, it will be necessary to tent and fumigate the entire building.  This method can be costly and leaves no residual protection; it is usually the only alternative when many large termite colonies are present.

We live in a sea of Termites here in Florida.  It’s not if you will get a termite problem, It is when will you get a termite problem.  The University of Florida states that, 2/3’s of all new homes in Florida will have a termite problem within 5 years.  To protect your home, have a FREE TERMITE INSPECTION performed yearly from Collier Pest Control.  Then consider one of our economic protective termite services to protect your valuable home form unwanted damage and stress.

ROACHES THE SURINAM COCKROACH PEST CONTROL EXTERMINATOR FORT MYERS NAPLES BONITA SPRINGS FLORIDA

THE SURINAM COCKROACH

This tropical cockroach usually is not noticed until large numbers have populated an area.  They remain inside cracks and crevices, under leaf litter, and mulch during the day and come out at night to feed upon plants.  Surinam cockroaches are plant feeders and can severely damage plants in greenhouses and atriums.  They also are commonly found in potted plants, planters, and other humid, hot situations outdoors in the Gulf coast states from Florida to Texas.

The Surinam cockroach burrows into the soil to a depth of three to four inches, where they construct a burrow containing nymphs, (adolescents), and females incubating their egg capsules.  These egg capsules produce from 14 to 42 eggs each.  Surinam cockroaches are unique, in that there are NO males of the species found in the United States.  The females reproduce parthenogentically without mating with a male.  Surinam cockroaches are 3/4” to 1” long, are brown in color,  and have a very obvious dark brown to black shield, (the area behind its head), which is called the pronotum.

To control this insect it is critical to remove harborage areas, such as excessive leaf litter, excessive mulch, unneeded landscape timbers, stones, or other objects close to the foundation of your building.  Residual materials should be applied to foundations, plantings, woodpiles, potted plants, mulch and any infested areas.  Barrier treatments can substantially reduce Surinam cockroach populations around your home.

MOLES PEST CONTROL EXTERMINATOR FORT MYERS NAPLES BONITA SPRINGS FLORIDA

MOLE

LAWN TREATMENT

While you've probably never seen them, you may have seen their tunnels running across your lawn or through your garden beds. We're talking about moles.  Moles are notorious for the damage they cause to sod nurseries, golf courses, parks, cemeteries, residential lawns, ornamental planting beds and gardens as a result of their digging and tunneling in search of turf grass insects and earthworms upon which to feed. These small mammals definitely frustrate some gardeners, but the good news is they usually don't cause any lasting damage. Moles live in underground runways and are seldom seen above the ground. In heavily infested areas, these tunnels form a vast network of interconnecting highways. The main runways are often 5 to 8 inches deep, but can vary from 2 to 20 inches underground. The chambers created are about the size of a quart jar. Moles dig runways to search for food, provide protection from predators and create space for resting and breeding.

Moles prefer loose, moist soil (sandy loam is ideal) where digging is easy and food plentiful. In fact, they're often considered beneficial creatures because they feed on white grubs, mole crickets, and other pest insects that might otherwise harm your plants. Moles are not rodents, but members of the order Insectivora. All moles are characterized by enlarged forefeet with long claws, stout necks and powerful shoulders that make them capable burrowers. Depending on the species, moles are usually 4 to 8 inches long, with long snouts (1/2 inch) and velvety fur.

Moles are primarily carnivores. Their diets consist mainly of earthworms, grubs, beetles and insect larvae they find in the soil. Moles have hearty appetites, consuming 60%-80% of their body weight each day. A single mole eats about 40 pounds of food each year.

Moles are common in Southwest Florida, although if you have Moles running through your landscape, you need Collier Pest Control, Southwest Florida’s Pest Control Authority.  We have a Mole Lawn Treatment that will run off Moles from any lawn.  If you live in Naples, Bonita Springs, Fort Myers, or anywhere in beautiful Southwest Florida and would like a full explanation on our Mole Lawn Treatment or any of our services, call our office or look us up on our website at collierpestcontrol.com  Remember Florida does not have to be shared with pests.

FLEA LAWN TREATMENT PEST CONTROL EXTERMINATOR FORT MYERS NAPLES BONITA SPRINGS FLORIDA

FLEA LAWN TREATMENT

Here in beautiful Southwest Florida our flea season is all year long and can intensify between November through May. Most common fleas in this area are the Cat Fleas that are a nuisance inside and originate outside.  To correct this you need to treat all areas your pet frequents, in the house and the lawn outside.  This should be done the same time the pet is being treated by the veterinarian or yourself.

Collier Pest Control, Southwest Florida’s Pest Authority, provides an environmentally safe Flea Lawn Treatment.  It’s safe for people, pets, and plants.  This service will give you relief from fleas on your lawn and provide flea control of new adult fleas for a 90 day period.

The adult flea is a small, active, wingless, dark brown insect with a flat body.  It can jump 7 to 8 inches vertically, and 14 to 16 inches horizontally.  The eggs are laid while the female flea is on the host animal. When the pet scratches, shakes, rub up against furniture the eggs can fall off onto the floor or the furniture.  These eggs hatch into very small caterpillar-like larvae and feed on almost any organic debris including the dried blood from adult flea excrement. The flea larvae upon reaching larval maturity will pupate (form a cocoon around itself) and grow into an adult flea inside the cocoon.  Then when stimulated by heat, vibration, or carbon dioxide the flea will emerge out of the cocoon and jump on the nearby host. As an adult flea it will live 90% of the time on a host for feeding.  The adult flea has a piercing sucking mouthpart to draw blood from its host.

Collier Pest Control provides you the latest most advanced method of Flea Lawn Treatment available.  We offer you the advantages of growth regulators and residual materials to control the egg, larva, and adult stages of the flea for up to 90 days.

SPIDERS BLACK WIDOW SPIDER PEST CONTROL EXTERMINATOR FORT MYERS NAPLES BONITA SPRINGS FLORIDA

SOUTHERN BLACK WIDOW SPIDER

THE SOUTHERN BLACK WIDOW SPIDER is the most wide-spread widow Spider here in Southwest Florida.  They are identified by their very shiny jet black bodies and their famous red hourglass marking on the underside of the abdomen and another red spot at the tip end of the abdomen.

The Southern Black Widow Spider is usually found outdoors in protected places, such as under rocks and boards, and in and around old buildings, window shutters, garbage cans, screen enclosures, playground equipment, and stored bicycles or cars.

The bite of any widow Spider usually feels like a pin prick. The initial pain will disappear and back usually begin within 15 minutes to 3 hours.  If severe pain to the abdomen, nausea, sweating, or difficulty in breathing occur, seek medical attention immediately.

WHITE FLY RUGOSE SPIRALING WHITE FLY ON PALMS FORT MYERS NAPLES BONITA SPRINGS FLORIDA

Rugose Spiraling White Fly

The Rugose Spiraling Whitefly originated in Central America.  This is not the same whitefly that is currently causing defoliation and branch dieback of ficus in South Florida.  These whiteflies are small winged insects.  They typically feed on the underside of leaves with their needle-like mouthparts.  Whiteflies can seriously injure host plants by sucking nutrients from the plant causing wilting, yellowing, stunting, leaf drop, or even death.

The Rugose Spiraling Whitefly has a very broad host range from palms to woody ornamentals and fruits.  It has been seen on gumbo limbo, black olive, copperleaf, broadleaf arrowhead, Brazilian pepper, wax myrtle, live oak, mango, and several palms.

The adults congregate on the undersides of the leaves to feed and reproduce.  The female lays here eggs in a spiral pattern on the leaves and also deposits a white, waxy substance on the eggs.  The crawler stage hatches from the eggs and crawls around before it starts to feed with its “needle-like” mouthparts.  This stage is very small and difficult to see.

The most noticeable symptoms of an infestation of this whitefly are the abundance of white, waxy material covering the leaves and also excessive black sooty mold.  The actual effect of an infestation of Rugose Spiraling Whitefly on the health of a plant is unknown; however, whiteflies in general can cause plant decline, defoliation and branch dieback.

Monitor plants for early signs of an infestation.  Small potted plants can be washed off with water.  Larger plants can be controlled with horticultural oil or insecticidal soap or most likely will need an insecticide spraying and root drenching by a professional lawn pest control company to control these whiteflies.  They will use a systemic insecticide product that can be applied directly to the infested plant or the soil.

Collier Pest Control, Southwest Florida’s Pest Authority, will treat each infected tree with the appropriate materials by root feeding and by direct contact.  These materials will protect each tree for a period of 6 months after application.

ANTS FIRE ANTS PEST CONTROL EXTERMINATOR FORT MYERS NAPLES BONITA SPRINGS FLORIDA

FIRE ANTS

Ants are among the most successful of all insects and the Fire Ant has developed into a very aggressive member of success.  Not only are they damaging to agriculture but also dangerous to young animals and humans.

There are 4 types of Fire Ants found in the United States.  The original Fire Ant was found in coastal areas of the southern U.S., particularly in Florida.  This ant is reddish brown to dark in color and is 1/16th of an inch long.  The original Fire Ant does not make large dirt mounds in the soil, and is not always aggressive to sting when in contact with animals or human.

The Red Imported Fire Ant is found in coastal plain areas of the southern states, from South Carolina, south along the Atlantic coast into southern Florida, across the southern states into much of the eastern half of Texas. This ant is a touch larger than the Original Fire Ant, reddish brown to dark in color, makes large mounds of dirt in the soil, and is very aggressive to sting when in contact with animals or humans. Large colonies of this ant can have up to 300 to 500,000 workers, which live from 1 to 9 months, can forage over 100 yards from the nest.  Some Red Imported Fire Ant colonies have multiple queen colonies of up to 60 queens that can live up to 7 years. These ants also produce super colonies that have workers from different colonies supporting and tending to more than one colony in the same area.

The Black Imported Fire Ants are only around the northern end of the border between Mississippi and Alabama.  Once quite common in the southern U.S., it has been displaced by competition from the Imported Fire Ant.  The Black Fire Ant has no importance to us in Florida since it is not here.

The fourth and smallest of all Fire Ants is the Tropical Little Fire Ant found in Florida and California.  The Tropical Little Fire Ant is small about 1/15th of an inch long.  This ant is lighter reddish to red in color and lives outside in mulch, logs, under stones, high moisture areas and next to structures.  This ant moves around very slowly and is sensitive to cold, and appears only in the warmest weather.  The Tropical Little Fire Ant is a serious household pest, contaminating food and infesting unlaundered clothing and beds.  All of the fire ant types feed on organic material, body oils, dead insects, food scraps, and even oil products such as grease and silicone.

All fire ants are notorious for their painful, burning sting that results in a pustule of intense itching, which may persist for several days.  Some people have allergic reactions to fire ant stings that range from rashes and swelling to paralysis and death.  Immediate first aid is vital for all fire ant stings.  If a person is exhibiting symptoms of dizziness, nausea, sweating, swelling of affected area, headache, or shortness of breath they should seek medical attention.  If none of these symptoms are present, apply ice and ammonia on the affected area for temporary relief. To prevent secondary infection, keep affected area clean and do not scratch or break pustules.

Keep your lawn an area of recreation for fun and relaxation.  Don’t let Fire Ants take over and spoil your Southwest Florida lifestyle.  Call Collier Pest Control, Southwest Florida’s Pest Authority, to eradicate the fire ants from your lawn with our specially developed technique in fire ant control. Safe effective baiting and residual spraying methods are used to eliminate the workers, stop the queens from producing eggs, and controlling new infestations for a period of up to 90 days.

LIZARDS SPINY TAILED LIZARD PEST CONTROL FORT MYERS NAPLES BONITA SPRINGS FLORIDA

SPINY TAILED LIZARD

The Indian Spiny Tailed Lizard is pretty easy to tell apart from other lizards since they have large, distinctive spines surrounding their tail. Spiny-tailed lizards are commonly called dabb lizards or mastiqures in certain parts of the world. They are found in the arid zones of Africa and Asia. If you combine this spiny tail with their flat snout and rounded head, they are pretty easy to distinguish. Spiny-tailed lizards are flattened with short strong legs and a characteristic tail with large spine-like scales.  The Egyptian spiny-tail is the largest species, growing over two feet in length and weighing several pounds.  The majority of spiny-tailed lizards grow to about one foot in length.  Typically, the Indian Spiny Tailed Lizard is a yellowish-brown or olive color, however, during the colder seasons they will become much darker. This particular lizard generally lives in colonies, so where you find one…you will probably find more.  Since their habitat consists mainly of sand, the Indian Spiny Tailed Lizard has become quite adept at digging. They will typically dig burrows for themselves (they don’t share their desert burrow home with other members of the colony) and will spend a lot of time in or around this sanctuary. They tend to establish themselves in hilly, rocky areas with good shelter and accessible vegetation. They can often be seen sunning themselves just outside of their burrow. Spiny-tailed lizards are omnivorous, meaning they will eat both plant and animal matter. The young are more insectivorous while adults prefer plant material. Spiny-tailed lizards occasionally eat insects, especially when young.  Their spiked tail is muscular and heavy, and can be swung at an attacker with great velocity, usually accompanied by hissing and an open-mouthed display of small teeth.  They are not aggressive lizards and are easy to handle.  They rarely bite and can even be hand fed.  When frightened they puff up their body and wave their spiny tail around.
