SKINKS SOUTHERN 5 LINED SKINK PEST CONTROL BONITA SPRINGS FORT MYERS NAPLES FLORIDA

SOUTHEASTERN FIVE-LINED SKINK

The Southeastern Five-lined Skink range throughout the Southeast United States including Florida.  This is one of Florida’s most common Skinks.  They are a moderately large lizard with short legs and a streamlined body.  The Five-lined Skink spends most of their time on the ground searching for prey. Mistakenly called ‘Blue Tailed Skinks’, that name only applies to the juveniles which mature into adults with brown bodies and brown tails. The juvenile’s tail is fragile and may break off during a dispute only to re-grow with time. The young have a bright blue tail while adult males stripes may fade and a reddish or orange coloration may develop on the head. This Skink may be poisonous if eaten by pets.

This Five-lined Skink is found around man-made structures, edges of fields and woods, urban woodlots, dry pine forest, mixed pine-hardwood forests, early stage of lowland pine communities, and sawdust piles.  It is found in logs and under bark or debris on the ground.  The body is generally gray, brown, or black, in background color with five white or yellowish stripes (two on each side and one down the center of the back). They feed on insects and spiders including beetles grasshoppers, wood roaches, caterpillars, and centipedes.
