FLIES HOUSE FLIES PEST CONTROL EXTERMINATORS NAPLES FORT MYERS SOUTHWEST FLORIDA

HOUSE FLIES

Collier Pest Control is Southwest Florida's Pest Authority, including the common House Fly.  The House Fly is of the most common of all insects.  It is worldwide in distribution and is a pest in homes, barns, and poultry houses, food processing plants, dairies, and recreation areas. The House Fly has a tremendous breeding potential all year in Florida and can produce a generation in less than 2 weeks. House Fly eggs can be laid in almost any type of warm organic material, such as fermenting vegetation, manure, or garbage. House Fly eggs hatch within 24 hours into tiny larva called maggots. In 3 to 6 day these maggots migrate to drier areas and cocoon themselves just like a butterfly.  A House Fly can complete its life cycle, (egg, larva, pupa, and adult) in Florida in 6 to 10 days, living a life span of about 30 days.

House Flies digest their food outside their bodies. They excrete a fluid on their food to digest it and then draw this fluid, with the digested food, up through their sponging sucking mouth part.  This is why House Flies can vector or spread diseases such as dysentery and diarrhea.  Flies can be a problem here in Southwest Florida all year round, but the strongest activity is from May through July.

Collier Pest Control has many ways to help you combat flies and their annoying problems.  We have put together some items that can offer help with continuing fly problems.  First, try to eliminate excess food sources such as open garbage cans, unused pet food, excess pet excrement, open drain covers, broken sprinkler heads, unclean mops and brooms.   Eliminate any item a fly could use as food.  Second, repair or correct all openings to your home or business a fly could enter such as broken screens, open doors, non sealing weather stripping, and open construction cracks in the building.  Finally, Collier Pest Control can assist you in mechanical fly control.  We can provide you with fly bait for quick easy control, electronic fly traps for inside or outside control, thorough broadcast treatment of insect controlling materials to help give you a quick control, and expert assistance from manufacturers, distributors, and educators.

TERMITES DRYWOOD TERMITES PELLET PEST CONTROL EXTERMINATORS NAPLES FORT MYERS SOUTHWEST FLORIDA

DRYWOOD TERMITES

Drywood Termites as well as other termites dwell in Florida.  Drywood Termites infest dry wood and do not require contact with the soil.  Other types of termites need to nest in the soil in order to survive.

Drywood Termites are a social insect that live in colonies.  The colonies are composed of kings, queens and soldiers.  There is no worker caste of termite as in other types of termites. The work or foraging for food is done by the immature termites before they become adults.  These nymphs, the immature termites, which are most numerous castes, are white and wingless.  Kings and Queens Termites perform the reproductive function of the colony.  They are light to dark brown and 1/3 to one inch in length.  The Soldiers guard the colony against invaders such as ants.  They are white and wingless with large brownish heads and jaws.  The soldiers and immature remain inside the wood at all times.

Drywood Termites are more common along coastal areas, although they are also found inland.  Drywood Termite food consists of cellulose obtained from wood.  Infestations of Drywood Termites may be found in almost any product containing cellulose.  They are most commonly found infesting attics, window sills, door frames, woodwork in buildings and furniture.

Detecting Drywood Termites infestations may be noticed in several ways.  One way is during the early months of the year.  Drywood Termite Kings and Queens emerge from the colonies as swarms.  The purpose of these swarms is to establish new colonies.  The appearance of winged termites in the home is an indication of probable infestation; however, they may have come in from outside.  Swarming termites are attracted to light.  Swarming termites may be found around window sills or lights.  Shortly after emerging from the colony, swarming termites land and lose their wings.  If the swarming termites do not find a suitable nesting area, they will die.

A common way to detect Drywood Termites is that Drywood Termites unlike other types of termites excrete pellets of partly digested wood.  These pellets are straw-colored to reddish brown and about the size of sand.  The pellets are pushed from the galleries and found on are surfaces beneath the infested wood.

An experienced eye can detect Drywood Termites in an advanced stage of infestation from surface blistering.  Drywood Termites sometimes tunnel close to the surface giving the wood a blistered appearance.

Preventative measures for the Drywood Termite is limited at best.  Any opening to windows and attics should be screened.  Any cracks or voids should be caulked or filled with wood filler.  The use of termite resistant woods such as Redwood, Bald Cypress, Mahogany, Spanish cedar, and commercial pressure treated wood will resist Drywood Termites for several years until weathering makes it susceptible to infestation.

Drywood Termites require a completely different control method; therefore' the infestation must be correctly identified first.  If detected in the early stages and damage is localized, a Drywood Termite colony may be controlled by removing and replacing the damaged wood or by the application of a termite labeled insecticide.  If the infestation is too extensive and advanced for local treatment, it will be necessary to tent and fumigate the entire building.  This method can be costly and leaves no residual protection; it is usually the only alternative when many large termite colonies are present.

We live in a sea of Termites here in Florida.  It's not if you will get a termite problem, It is when will you get a termite problem.  The University of Florida states that, 2/3's of all new homes in Florida will have a termite problem within 5 years.  To protect your home, have a FREE TERMITE INSPECTION performed yearly from Collier Pest Control.  Then consider one of our economic protective termite services to protect your valuable home form unwanted damage and stress.

FLEAS LAWN FLEA TREATMENT PEST CONTROL EXTERMINATORS NAPLES FORT MYERS SOUTHWEST FLORIDA

FLEA LAWN TREATMENT

Here in beautiful Southwest Florida our flea season is all year long and can intensify between November through May. Most common fleas in this area are the Cat Fleas that are a nuisance inside and originate outside.  To correct this you need to treat all areas your pet frequents, in the house and the lawn outside.  This should be done the same time the pet is being treated by the veterinarian or yourself.

Collier Pest Control, Southwest Florida's Pest Authority, provides an environmentally safe Flea Lawn Treatment.  It's safe for people, pets, and plants.  This service will give you relief from fleas on your lawn and provide flea control of new adult fleas for a 90 day period.

The adult flea is a small, active, wingless, dark brown insect with a flat body.  It can jump 7 to 8 inches vertically, and 14 to 16 inches horizontally.  The eggs are laid while the female flea is on the host animal. When the pet scratches, shakes, rub up against furniture the eggs can fall off onto the floor or the furniture.  These eggs hatch into very small caterpillar-like larvae and feed on almost any organic debris including the dried blood from adult flea excrement. The flea larvae upon reaching larval maturity will pupate (form a cocoon around itself) and grow into an adult flea inside the cocoon.  Then when stimulated by heat, vibration, or carbon dioxide the flea will emerge out of the cocoon and jump on the nearby host. As an adult flea it will live 90% of the time on a host for feeding.  The adult flea has a piercing sucking mouthpart to draw blood from its host.

Collier Pest Control provides you the latest most advanced method of Flea Lawn Treatment available.  We offer you the advantages of growth regulators and residual materials to control the egg, larva, and adult stages of the flea for up to 90 days.

CARPENTER ANTS FLORIDA CARPENTER ANT PEST CONTROL EXTERMINATORS NAPLES FORT MYERS SOUTHWEST FLORIDA

FLORIDA CARPENTER ANT

FED UP!  Tired of seeing Carpenter Ants in your home?  Sick of spraying those awful smelling insecticides? Trying to kill off what seems to be a never ending army of silent invaders?

NO PROBLEM! Collier Pest Control, Southwest Florida's Pest Authority, has a  highly developed method of Carpenter Ant Control that can rid you of your nightly aggravations.  As the population of Florida continues to grow and building development extends into previously undisturbed land, ant and insect sightings in homes are on the rise.

The Florida Carpenter Ant is a large ant, up to 1/2 inch long, with its head and thorax brown, and abdomen black.  The reputation of this ant being a house wrecker is all fable.  The Florida Carpenter Ant does not eat wood, as termites do.  They will, however, excavate galleries in previously damaged wood from moisture, termites, or dry rot.  The Florida Carpenter Ant feeds on honeydew produced from aphids, other insects, and household scraps.

The Florida Carpenter Ant nests in the ground beneath root systems, rotting logs, tree stumps, mulch beds, tree cavities or any moisture area.  These ants foliage indoors for water, food, or to form a satellite colony. This satellite colony is a secondary colony to support the main colony.

Collier Pest Control will control these swiftly moving nocturnal pests by eliminating the satellite colonies in your home, killing other colonies around your home and applying carpenter ant repealing materials to keep all unwanted guests from returning to your home.

If you live in Naples, Fort Myers, or Southwest Florida call 239-455-4300 Collier Pest Control today for an estimate and a complete explanation on how this new method of Carpenter Ant treatment will work for you, or look us up on our web site at collierpestcontrol.com..  Don't let unwanted guests spoil your beautiful Southwest Florida lifestyle.  Remember, Florida does not have to be shared with insects!

BUGS IN YOUR FOOD FOOD PRODUCT PESTS CONTROL EXTERMINATORS NAPLES FORT MYERS SOUTHWEST FLORIDA

STORED PANTRY & FOOD PRODUCT PEST

Collier Pest Control is your Southwest Florida Pest Authority including Stored Food Product Pests.  There are several different types of Food Product Pests in Southwest Florida.  The most common are flour beetles, saw-toothed grain beetles, cigarette and drug store beetles, weevils, grain moths, Indian and Mediterranean flour moths, and psocids.

Most of the Stored Food Product Pests in Florida can reproduce quickly all year. It is very unsettling to open a brand new package of something just to find it infested with insects.  How did they get into that package?  The answer is that they were in the package when the food product was processed at the factory.  Then when the age, humidity, and temperature of the food product get just right the insects hatch out. From the infested food packages, the pests may spread to other exposed food.

These Food Product Pests are usually found living in dried fruit, spices, flour, bran,  dried vegetables, dried flowers, grains, milled cereal products, dried dog and cat food, nuts, candy, pasta, grits, cake mixes, and other similar processed dried or grain products.

The first step in controlling Food Product Pests is to locate the source of the infestation.  All susceptible foods should be thoroughly inspected and infested items be discarded.  You need to take the time to go through the pantry and inspect those items in question.

Insects in infested foods may be killed by heat or cold if the item is of value and need to be saved.  Invested foods may be placed in an oven at 130 degrees for 30 minutes or into a freezer at 0 degrees for 4 days to kill live insects and their eggs.  If insects are out of the food package and active, you can vacuum or dry wipe up all insects and wash the area with warm soapy water. If insects reappear after you have inspected and discarded infested food items take the time to re-inspect and discard any new infested items and look for the source of the problem.

The presence of bugs in your food or Food Product Pests is not an indication of uncleanliness since the infestation of the food product was before you purchased the food product.

EARWIGS PEST CONTROL EXTERMINATOR NAPLES FORT MYERS SOUTHWEST FLORIDA

EARWIGS

Collier Pest Control is your Southwest Florida Pest Authority including Earwigs.  This pest is one of the most common outdoor pests seen here in Southwest Florida.  These nocturnal dangerous looking pests do slip into your home through small construction cracks and crevices foraging for food.  Earwigs are identified by their pincer like appendage at the end of the abdomen (call forceps).  They are brownish in color, with very short wings, and about 1/2 to 1 inch long. The forceps are used to trap prey and protect themselves, but are not strong enough to hurt anyone.

Earwigs hide during the day in moist shady places under stones, logs, mulch, dead foliage and any high moisture area.  These scavengers feed on live or dead plants and insects.

The common name "Earwig" comes from an old European superstition that these insects enter the ears of sleeping people and bore into the brain.  This is entirely unfounded since earwigs are harmless to man.

Earwigs can be difficult to control.  The key to effective Earwig control is removal of any non-essential mulch and plant debris or anything that could hold moisture such as boards and stones around your home.  The purpose of this is to establish a low moisture zone around your home that is disagreeable to Earwigs. Collier Pest Control can help eliminate these creatures with our "Collier Complete" pest control service.  We will treat all the cracks and crevices inside your home and broadcast spray the eaves, soffits, mulch beds, flowerbeds, entryways, and 5 to 10 feet perimeter outside your home.

SPRINGTAILS TINY BUGS PEST CONTROL EXTERMINATOR NAPLES FORT MYERS SOUTHWEST FLORIDA

SPRINGTAILS

Springtails are minute wingless insects that occur in large numbers in moist soil and are found in homes with very high humidity, organic debris, or mold.  Homeowners sometimes discover these insects in large numbers in swimming pools, potted plants, or in moist soil and mulch.  Springtails feed on decaying, damp vegetation causing organic material and other nutrients to return to the soil which are later used by plants.

Springtails range in length from .25 to 6 millimeter and range in color from white to yellow, gray, or blue gray.  They are unique in the fact that attached to the tip of their abdomen is a forked appendage called the tenaculum, resembling a lever.  When disturbed, this lever strikes the ground, causing the insect to spring into the air.            They are capable of springing up to about 4 inches into the air, which is where they received their name.  Because of this jumping motion they are sometimes confused with fleas.

These insects are pests due to their large numbers.  They do not bite or transmit diseases.  They can easily climb the sides of houses and are attracted to lights.  They can also be brought into homes in soil of potted plants.  Springtail populations have also been found floating in swimming pools.

Controlling Springtails can be as easy as drying out the soil and mulch around your home or misting the infested areas with a dishwashing soap in water.  Insecticides can be applied to control these pesky pests when great numbers show up.

If you live in Naples, Fort Myers, or Southwest Florida call 239-455-4300 Collier Pest Control, Southwest Florida's Pest Authority, for a full explanation on how to control Springtails or any of our services, or look us up on our web site at collierpestcontrol.com.  Remember Florida does not have to be shared with insects.

ANTS WHITE FOOT ANT INFORMATION PEST CONTROL EXTERMINATOR NAPLES FORT MYERS SOUTHWEST FLORIDA

MORE INFORMATION ABOUT

WHITE FOOT ANTS

The White Foot ants are originally native to tropical Asia.  They were inadvertently introduced into the United States in 1986 around the Homestead Florida area.  They were brought into this country through landscaping foliage and have expanded into several counties throughout the state.

White Foot Ants are identified by their robust black bodies with distinctive lighter color on their lower legs called Tarsi.  They are about 1/8th of an inch long with regular sized antennae and legs.  They have thick hairs on their thorax, lines across their gaster, with a hidden node.

White Foot Ants do not bite or sting and do not cause any structural damage.  They are just a strong nuisance ant that is attracted to sweet foods.  The primary food for White Foot Ants is the honey dew off of plants that is produced by aphids, but will trail into a structure foraging for food.

Until recently the White Foot Ant where difficult to control due to several of their biological attributes.  They establish colonies of well over 0ne million ants, with more than half of the ants being worker ants.  These workers are sterilized females that are responsible for foraging for food and tending to the care of the nest.  The White Foot ants do not share their food with each other as most other types of ants.  The way the White Foot Ant feeds their colonies is by the foraging worker eats food or even our insecticide killing baits and then returns to the colony.  There that worker will lay a soft shell non fertile egg that the colony knows is their food source.  They then will eat the non fertile egg and not the food that the worker has eaten outside the nest.  With this method of feeding the colony giving the worker ants killing insecticide bait will only kill that worker and not be effective to kill off the colony.

Collier Pest Control, Southwest Florida's Pest Authority, has developed its own method of treatment to effectively control White Foot Ants.  With the experience of the staff and with the cooperation of the Entomology department of the University of Florida we have one of the most effective treatments to successfully control the White Foot Ant.  Knowing the problem of not being able to get killing insecticide baits back to the colony, the next direction of control is to starve the colony out by not letting the workers go back to the colony.

The Collier Pest Control's method of eliminating White Foot Ants is a 6 consecutive week treatment.  The first week is to treat the house with a Collier Complete service use contact sprays to kill off all live activity throughout the inside of the house.  Use killing insecticide baits in all active areas and treat the attic with a dust material.  Outside we use many materials to kill off White Foot workers.  We treat the perimeter of the house and all trailing activity with a special residual material.  We also spray a wide perimeter around the house up to 40 feet treating all foliage, and turf with another long term residual material.  Each week there after we bait and spot treat the inside of the house and wide perimeter spray the outside of the house.  By doing this we are killing off large numbers of White Foot worker ants not letting them return to feed the colony.   Each week when we kill off these large numbers of worker ants, the queens then send more worker ants out to forage for food and then return to feed the nest.  An ant's life cycle from egg to adult is 6 to 8 weeks.  The queens do not have enough time to replenish the nest with new workers as fast as we are killing off her workers.  After about 3 to 4 weeks so many workers are now killed off the colony does not have enough workers to tend to the colony properly or forage for food that the nest collapses from lack of care.  We have starved the White Foot colony and eliminated our customer's problem.

If you live in Naples, Fort Myers, or Southwest Florida call 239-455-4300 for a full explanation of our Collier Complete General Household Service and our White Foot Treatment, or look us up on our web site at collierpestcontrol.com.  Remember Florida does not have to be shared with insects.

CENTIPEDES PEST CONTROL EXTERMINATORS NAPLES FORT MYERS SOUTHWEST FLORIDA

CENTIPEDES

Centipedes are very common here in Southwest Florida.  Sometimes confused with millipedes do not damage food or furnishings in your home. Centipedes are identified by having one pair of legs per body segment compared with millipedes that have two pair of legs per body segment and are usually brownish, flattened animals.  Centipedes are fast runners and grow to a length from 1 to 6 inches.  Centipedes have an appendage at the rear of their body that looks like a singer.  It is not, this appendage is designed for the Centipede to hold it's pray until it can eat it.

Centipedes have poorly developed eyes and are most active at night.  They are active predators and feed mainly on insects and spiders.  All centipedes have venom glands to immobilize their prey.  The jaws of the smaller local species cannot penetrate human skin; however the larger species may inflict painful bites.  This is how they catch their food source which is spiders, small live insects and their larva.

Centipedes live humid damp dark places such as under stones, leaf litter, logs, bark, ground cover and debris.  If they invade your home the Centipede could be found most likely in closets, bathrooms, and kitchen areas.

Centipedes usually lay 15 to 55 eggs clustered together in the soil but sometimes they are laid singly.  The eggs hatch soon after they are deposited.  The female will usually guard the newly hatched young.  Young Centipedes closely resemble the adult and require 3 years to mature.  Centipedes are rather long-lived and individuals may live up to 6 years.

TERMITES DUPONT ALTRISET TERMITICIDE IS REDUCED-RISK EXTERMINATOR PEST CONTROL NAPLES FORT MYERS SOUTHWEST FLORIDA

DUPONT ALTRISET TERMITICIDE

SAFEGUARD WHAT YOU VALUE MOST!

Now there is a non-repellent termiticide that provides excellent control of termites yet has minimal impact on the environment. The team of scientists at DuPont has developed another new class of chemistry with this latest innovation, providing high-performing termite control and soil residual for ongoing structural protection. DuPont? Altriset,? the first soil-applied liquid termiticide launched in almost a decade, is in a class of chemistry with a mode of action like no other termite control product. Laboratory and field study results prove Altriset? halts termite feeding within hours while providing termite elimination for critical long-term structural protection. Plus, Altriset? offers an excellent toxicological and environmental profile.  In addition to requiring no signal word on the label, DuPont? Altriset? is the first and only liquid termiticide to be classified as reduced-risk under the U.S. EPA reduced-risk program.

Studies have proven that DuPont? Altriset? is highly effective against termites, and even halts feeding in hours. Laboratory tests have shown as termites tunnel through the treated zone, they quickly acquire a lethal dose of Altriset.? However, these termites will continue to crawl, groom and clean for extended periods after exposure.  Once affected by Altriset,? termites will begin to exhibit increased aggregation, enhanced grooming and contact with other colony members for hours.  Affected termites will become more lethargic and show signs of muscle paralysis; decreased coordination and mortality will ultimately occur within several days. The delayed mortality and increased colony interaction are key reasons why Altriset? is so effective.

DuPont? Altriset? is a highly effective way to control termites while also minimizing impact on the environment. Altriset? also has an excellent environmental and toxicological profile?requiring no signal word on the label. This achievement is one reason why the U.S. EPA has awarded Altriset? reduced-risk status for use as a termiticide treatment.

Collier Pest Control, Southwest Florida's Pest Authority, is also concerned about the impact we have on our environment.  This is why we are very excited about the New Altriset? by DuPont? that has little or no toxic effect on our surroundings and environment!  If you are looking for a environmentally safe way to control damaging subterranean termites, this is it.  Altriset? control termites quickly and without any impact to our surrounding.

If you live in Naples, Fort Myers, or Southwest Florida call 239-455-4300 Collier Pest Control for a complete explanation of how an Altriset? treatment will work for you or any of our other services, or look us up on our web site at collierpestcontrol.com.  Remember Florida does not have to be shared with insects.

ROACHES IN FLORIDA EXTERMINATOR PEST CONTROL NAPLES FORT MYERS SOUTHWEST FLORIDA

FACTS ABOUT ROACHES IN FLORDIA

Collier Pest Control is your Southwest Florida Pest Control Authority, including Roaches.  Cockroaches are among the most common insects in the world.  Some species grow to be several inches long.  There are approximately 3500 species of cockroaches worldwide, about 55 species are found in the United States, and 8 species are common in Southwest Florida.

The German cockroach is most commonly encountered in much of the U.S. and in Southwest Florida.  Only a few of the cockroaches in the U.S. routinely enter our dwellings. The most common of these are the German, American, Brown Banded, and the Australian Roaches.  All of these species are found in Southwest Florida.

Most cockroaches live outdoors and are tropical or sub-tropical in origin. The two most common ways that roaches enter our dwellings are carried in on food containers or other parcels, or through construction cracks of windows, doors, walls, and roofs.

Cockroaches need the same things people need to live, food, moisture, and shelter.  Cockroaches can go several weeks without food. Even a small amount of spilled food can sustain a roach for a long period.

In the south, and here in Southwest Florida, the American Cockroach (the famous Florida Palmetto Bug) and other larger species (Australian and Florida woods roaches) are commonly found in the landscape. Movement to indoors often increases during periods of cold, extreme hot and dry weather, or excessive rainfall.  These large cockroaches can readily move inside during nighttime foraging.

Our "Collier Complete" pest control service will control all of Southwest Florida's cockroach species. Highly trained service technicians will thoroughly treat all the cracks and crevices inside of your home with long lasting baits and materials.  We complete our service with a thorough broadcast treatment of the outside perimeter of your home including the eaves, soffits, entryways, mulch beds, flowerbeds, and 5 to 10 feet around the house.

If you live in Naples, Fort Myers, or Southwest Florida call 239-455-4300 Collier Pest Control, Southwest Florida's Pest Authority, for a free estimate and a complete explanation of all of our services.  Do not let unwanted guests spoil your Southwest Florida lifestyle.  Remember, Florida does not have to be shared with insects!

BOOKLICE-BUGS IN BOOKS-EXTERMINATOR PEST CONTROL NAPLES FORT MYERS SOUTHWEST FLORIDA

BOOKLICE / PSOCIDS

Booklice are very small insects found on books and papers.   They are both winged and wingless and less than a 1/8 of an inch, with chewing mouthparts.  There are more than a 100 species collectively called psocids, including Booklice are a part. The term "lice" is somewhat misleading because none of these insects are parasitic or have 8 legs.  Most of the species are found inside buildings.  The two most commonly found are the common Booklouse and the Deathwatch.  These are often found among books and papers.  They also can be found in stored grain, dried foods, insect collections, furniture, beddings, warm moist areas, leaking water pipes, air conditioning drain pans, windowsills, or damaged roofs.

The control of psocids is directly related to finding the source of the Booklice and the source of the moisture that supports these insects. Infested furniture and bedding or other movable furnishings should be thoroughly cleaned and aired.  All infested foods should be discarded.  All excess moisture areas should be dried, repaired and aired to kill fungi. Insecticides can reduce the population of Booklice for a short length of time.  To completely eliminate psocids you must find the source of moisture supporting the molds and fungi that the Booklice feed on and eliminate it.

If you live in Naples, Fort Myers, or Southwest Florida call 239-455-4300 Collier Pest Control, Southwest Florida's Pest Authority, for a free estimate and a complete explanation on any of our services, or look us up on our web site at collierpestcontrol.com.  Don't let unwanted guests spoil your beautiful Southwest Florida lifestyle.  Remember, Florida does not have to be shared with insects.

WOOD DESTROYING ORGANISMS BEETLES EXTERMINATOR PEST CONTROL NAPLES FORT MYERS SOUTHWEST FLORIDA

OTHER WOOD DESTROYING ORGANISMS

OLD HOUSE BORER

The name "Old House Borer" is really misleading as this insect is most commonly found in newer homes.  This beetle has a life cycle of three to twelve years depending upon environmental and nutritional conditions.  The Old house Borer is a beetle that during the larval stage, feeds upon seasoned softwood, such as pine.  The larval stage feeds upon the wood and can do extensive damage before it is seen.  The Adult emerges from the wood and can lay eggs to continue the life cycle.  The adult creates an exit hole that is oval and 1/4 to 3/8 of an inch in diameter.  If the infestation is very limited the old house borer can be controlled by replacing the infested wood.  In most cases, tent fumigation treatment of the structure is required to achieve control.

POWDER POST BEETLES

Powder Post Beetles normally will infest hardwoods, such as ash elm, oak, pecan, and walnut, as the large open pores of these hardwoods are needed for egg-laying by the female.  In this area, they are most often found in bamboo or wicker furniture, although they have been seen in hardwood door frames.  The adult beetle is rarely seen, rather, the damage left by the adult emerging from the wood is often noticed.  The exit holes left by the adult are small, 1/32 of an inch to 1/8 of an inch in diameter.  Around the exit hole is a very fine talc like powder.  This is usually the first indicator of an infestation.  The adult can only re-infest the structure if there is unfinished hardwood., in which the female can lay it's eggs.  Control of the Powder Post Beetle, depends upon the source of infestation.  If the source is in furniture, or other removable items, the item ca be removed and treated.  In some instances, the entire structure must be fumigated.

WOOD DECAY FUNGI

Some people term this a "dry" rot.  There is no such thing a "dry rot".  All wood must have moisture of over 20% in order for wood decay fungi to attack.  There are three types of fungi that we have in this area.  White Rot:  This gives the wood a white bleached appearance.  The wood eventually turns spongy and is stringy when broken.  Brown Rot:  This rot give the wood a brown appearance and the wood breaks into cubical shapes pieces when broken.  Water conducting fungi:  (Poria) This rot is not very common in this area, but when seen, looks like a white fan with dirty white to black roots that can conduct moisture back to the wood up to twenty five feet away.  The control of wood decay fungi is to find the source of moisture and correct it.  Then the decaying wood can be replaced.  The most common area for wood decay in a home is at the bottom of a wood door frame of an exterior door.  Once the paint starts to fail, water invades the wood, and as soon as the moisture content exceeds 20% the wood decay fungi begins to grow.

If you live in Naples, Fort Myers, or Southwest Florida call 239-455-4300 Collier Pest Control, Southwest Florida's Pest Authority, for a complete explanation on termites, wood destroying insects, wood decay fungi, or any of our services, or look us up on our web site at collierpestcontrol.com.  Remember Florida does not have to be shared with insects.
