SKINKS GROUND SKINK PEST CONTROL EXTERMINATOR BONITA SPRINGS FORT MYERS NAPLES FLORIDA

GROUND SKINK

These small beautiful lizards are common in many parts of Florida.  They are coppery brown on the back and sides with a wide dark stripe on the upper part of their sides.  These small, slender lizards with long tails and short legs grow to about 5 inches; their legs are small and they move quickly in a snake-like winding motion.  They are quite common on lawns and around houses unlike many other lizards in our region, Ground Skinks virtually never climb.  Rather than running on their tiny legs, Ground Skinks use their slender bodies to wiggle or “swim” through leaf litter or loose soil, often disappearing in a flash as soon as they are discovered.  If pursued they will also take to the water to escape if they have to, but usually dive under the leaf litter.  All the species found in Florida prowl on the ground for small insects.  These bright-eyed little predators chase and catch insects, spiders, and various other invertebrates.  They in turn become food for many species of snakes.
