BROWN RECLUSE SPIDERS PEST CONTROL EXTERMINATORS NAPLES FORT MYERS SOUTHWEST FLORIDA

The Brown Recluse

The Brown Recluse is not an established species in Florida, but physicians have occasionally diagnosed its bite. The Brown recluse Spider has a dark violin shaped marking located behind the eyes on its back.  It is a medium sized spider about a 1/4 to 1/2 inch in length.  The Brown Recluse's natural habitat is from Texas to Southern Kansas, through middle Missouri to western Tennessee and northern Alabama, along the Mississippi River south and across Georgia.  Only scattered introductions have been recorded in Nebraska, Iowa, Indiana, Ohio and Florida.  The Brown Recluse has been inadvertently brought into Florida in trucks and automobiles, hidden luggage, boxes, and commercial cargo.  It appears to this date not to have been successful in establishing breeding populations in any part of Florida.  The Brown Recluse Spider is a shy species that bites humans only when trapped in clothing or rolled onto when people sleep.  Typically bites occur under clothing, mostly on the thigh, upper arm, or lateral torso, less often on the neck.  If you have been bitten by a Brown Recluse Spider you usually do not feel any pain from the bite for 2 to 3 hours after it has bitten you. If you have been bitten by any Spider try to keep the Spider for proper identification from a professional.  Reaction to a Brown Recluse Spider bite varies from no noteworthy symptom to severe necrosis or systemic effects.  Symptoms start two to six hours after the bite.  Blisters frequently appear at the bite site, accompanied by severe pain and pronounced swelling.  A common expression is the formation of a reddish blister, surrounded by a bluish area, with a narrow whitish separation between the red and blue, giving a "bulls-eye" pattern.  If bitten by a Brown Recluse Spider you need to seek medical attention immediately.
