COCKROACH INFORMATION LEE AND COLLIER COUNTY

COCKROACHES

There are approximately 3,500 species of cockroaches worldwide, with about only 55 species being found in The United States and 8 of those here in Southwest Florida. They are present in nearly every part of the world. Living in a wide range of habitats demonstrating that cockroaches are a truly an outstanding success story of nature.

Cockroaches are one of those animals that are best suited for life on this planet. They have chewing mouthparts, feed on almost anything, and will eat anything that is now or ever was organic in nature. This includes things you would not normally think of like hair, soap, leather etc. Cockroaches choose to live in protected cracks and crevices where it is warm, dark and damp. Some of the large species, such as American Cockroach and Australian Cockroach live in protected areas outside and will occasionally invade the home. Cockroaches develop by gradual metamorphosis (egg, nymph, adult).

Cockroaches are among the most common insects, their sizes vary considerably and some species are up to several inches long. Some biologists consider these insects to be one of the most successful groups of animals to ever inhabit this planet.
