SMALL HONEY ANT           

This small ant is only an occasional pest inside structures.  They do not regularly build colonies within homes or businesses.  Small Honey Ants build their colonies in the open shaded areas of your lawn, under concrete slabs, under stones, and landscaping beds.  They are very cold tolerant, foraging in temperatures just above freezing, and decreases with temperatures above 60 to 75 degrees.

            These small, 1/16 to 1/8 inch, yellowish to blackish brown ants look similar to small crazy ants with legs very long in relation to body size.  They are very fond of honeydew and will tend honeydew producing insects such as aphids.  They also feed on live and dead insects, juices of overripened fruits, and will extract the sap or juice from flower buds and plant shoots.

            If found inside a structure, follow the trailing ants back to the point where they exit the wall and then look on the outside of that wall for their trails.  Follow the trails back to where they enter the ground.  Look for crater shaped mounds on the dirt near and away from the foundation of the building.
