GIANT AMEVA LIZARD
The Giant Ameva Lizard is native to Central and South America. These alert, active lizards are also called Green Whiptails or Jungle Runners in the pet trade. The Giant Ameva can reach up to 2 feet in length with 2/3 of its length being the whip like tail. First seen around the Miami area in 1954, these lizards have become established and now breed in fields, parks and on canal banks. Its presence in Florida is presumably due to escapees from the pet trade. These lizards are often seen basking in the sun, but they are very fast and can run on their hind legs. The Giant Ameva are seen with two distinct color morphs. The dusky color morph has a charcoal to blue gray back with pale blue, yellowish or whitish spots, the green rumped color morph have green back or backs that are green near the head and tan colored toward the tail. The sides are speckled with dark edged white spots. The Giant Ameva Lizards can be found on barren land, and low density suburban developments where they dig borrows to use as escape shelters at night.
