LIZARDS TEGU LIZARD PEST CONTROL EXTERMINATOR NAPLES BONITA SPRINGS FORT MYERS FLORIDA

TEGU LIZARD

GOLD TEGU LIZARD

The Black and White, Red, Gold, and The Giant Argentine Tegu Lizard are established in West-Central and South Florida.  This large carnivorous lizard has a streamlined body shape with a long tail and powerful legs. It is either gold/tan, reddish, or gray in color and can grow up to 5 feet in length.  The Black-and-white or Giant Argentine Tegu, native to South America, has become established in the Tampa and Homestead areas due to the releasing or escaping of pets. Individual lizards belonging to several tegu species have also been captured in other areas in Florida. These large lizards grow to 4–5 feet long and can have a lifespan of 15 to 20 years.  Like Nile Monitor lizards, tegus are likely to eat the eggs and young of ground-nesting birds and turtles and could impact threatened and endangered species, including Gopher Tortoises. They are opportunistic predators and consume a variety of small prey as well as plant matter.  Black-and-white Tegus inhabit dry, upland areas with sandy soils, including natural, urbanized, and agricultural areas. Tegus could potentially become an agricultural pest or a source of bacterial contamination of food crops. These lizards may dig burrows, but also frequently invade the burrows of native Gopher Tortoises. They remain underground during late fall and winter months.  Several species have been heavily exploited commercially, primarily in Argentina, for their hides—a source of high-quality leather used for making shoes and purses. Tegus are considered a delicacy in parts of South America and are eaten locally. They are also popular in the commercial pet trade.
