SKINKS BROAD HEADED SKINK PEST CONTROL EXTERMINATOR BONITA SPRINGS NAPLES FORT MYERS FLORIDA

BROAD-HEADED SKINK

The Broad Headed Skink has long been called scorpion by uninformed rural southerners who believe that they are venomous.  This is the largest of Florida’s Skinks reaching more than a foot long.  Males are brown with a heavy, broad-jawed head, which becomes bright red during the breeding season.  Females are brown with two yellow stripes on the sides of the body and a faint stripe down the center of the back.  Broad headed Skinks are active foragers that move through the habitat looking for small animal prey although they occasionally eat fruit such as blackberries and grapes.  While foraging they flick their tongues out frequently to locate scents of prey.  They eat a wide range of small invertebrates, especially insects, many of which are found hidden in or under logs or surface litter on the forest floor.  These lizards tongue-flick to detect the presence of predators and to gather information about other species.  From the scents of another lizard, Board headed Skinks can tell whether the other lizard belongs to the same species reproductive condition, and whether or not it is a familiar individual.

Broad headed skinks are common in moist hammocks.  If you look carefully you may see them sunning themselves high up in the trees.  They are highly arboreal and often run up a tree when alarmed.  These large skinks feed mainly on beetles, beetle larvae, and larvae.
