IMAGINARY BITING INSECTS DULUSIONAL INSECTS NAPLES BONITA SPRING FORT MYERS FLORIDA

DELUSORY PARASITOSIS

Delusional Insects Biting

Parasitosis refers to the belief that you feel a sensation on the skin such as an insect crawling on, or burrowing into it, when in reality it is not really happening. The sensation feels like bugs, worms, or mites that are biting, crawling over, or burrowing into, under, or out of the skin.  These perceptions are referred to as delusory parasitosis. Delusory refers to a belief with evidence to the contrary. They must be there, because the affected person can feel them, and they are even pretty sure that they can see them. They may also believe that their home or furniture is infested, but they may be the only one who knows they are there. No one seems to think they exist except the affected person. Nothing seems to get rid of them. So what are they—mites, lice, or worms?

Nearly any marking upon the skin, small object or particle found on the person or his clothing, can be interpreted as evidence for the parasitic infestation.  Some affected people will bring small particles of dust, skin flakes, and other material for inspection to a professional when seeking help

A study conducted of 108 patients at the Mayo Clinic failed to find evidence of skin infestation despite doing skin biopsies and examining specimens provided by the patients.  The study, which was conducted between 2001 and 2007, concluded that the feeling of skin infestation was delusional parasitosis.

The first person to contact should be a family physician or primary health care provider. Medical professionals are the only individuals who are licensed to diagnose a condition and recommend specific treatments. Dermatologists, in particular, are trained to deal most effectively with disorders of the skin and their causes, including parasites. If a parasite is causing the disorder, most physicians or their technicians can recognize the most common parasites.

There are over 100 medical causes of human skin itch such as: biacterial infection, fungal infection, viruses, nematodes (roundworms, hookworms, pinworms), anemia, autoimmune disease, depression, diabetes, liver disease, menopause, rheumatoid arthritis, stress, uremia -urinary waste in the blood, allergic sensitivity to nonliving substances in your environment (e.g., office paper dust is a well-known example), and to use or abuse of prescription or illicit drugs, particularly methamphetamines.

Treatments of the delusional parasitosis are addressed by treating the primary associated psychological or physical condition.  However, it is also characteristic that sufferers will reject the diagnosis of delusional parasitosis by medical professionals, and very few are willing to be treated, despite demonstrable efficacy of treatment.

If you are experiencing any of these symptoms and do not see any insects or evidence of why you are feeling a parasitosis on your skin.  Contact your personal physician and if it is determined that you have been bitten by an insect, Call Collier Pest Control for help. If you live in Naples, Bonita Springs, Fort Myers, or any were in Southwest Florida call Collier Pest Control, at 239-455-4300, and we can explain how to eliminate your insect problem, or look us up on our website at collierpestcontrol.com.  Remember Florida does not have to be share with insects!
