HOUSE GECKO
The Common House Gecko is widely distributed through Southern Asia, and is a common sight on islands and seaports throughout much of the world’s warmer oceans. In Florida, this gray with warty skin gecko can be found around warehouses near Fort Myers, Homestead, Stock Island on the lower Florida Keys, and Key West. However, it is commonly imported in the pet trade and may be established around other reptile dealerships. Adults may attain a total length of 4 ½ inches and are typically found on walls of buildings. The ground color is ashy gray with an irregular pattern of darker pigment, but the color becomes very light at night. The scalation is mostly smooth, and the belly is nearly white. House Geckos are largely insectivores, but adults will consume spiders and other invertebrates, and occasionally juvenile geckos as well. They are strongly territorial and can be quite vocal at night, making a series chirps. Captured or fighting males emit barely audible squeaks.
