THE SURINAM COCKROACH

 

This tropical cockroach usually is not noticed until large numbers have populated an area.  They remain inside cracks and crevices, under leaf litter, and mulch during the day and come out at night to feed upon plants.  Surinam cockroaches are plant feeders and can severely damage plants in greenhouses and atriums.  They also are commonly found in potted plants, planters, and other humid, hot situations outdoors in the Gulf coast states from Florida to Texas.

The Surinam cockroach burrows into the soil to a depth of three to four inches, where they construct a burrow containing nymphs, (adolescents), and females incubating their egg capsules.  These egg capsules produce from 14 to 42 eggs each.  Surinam cockroaches are unique, in that there are NO males of the species found in the United States.  The females reproduce parthenogentically without mating with a male.  Surinam cockroaches are 3/4" to 1" long, are brown in color,  and have a very obvious dark brown to black shield, (the area behind its head), which is called the pronotum.  

To control this insect it is critical to remove harborage areas, such as excessive leaf litter, excessive mulch, unneeded landscape timbers, stones, or other objects close to the foundation of your building.  Residual materials should be applied to foundations, plantings, woodpiles, potted plants, mulch and any infested areas.  Barrier treatments can substantially reduce Surinam cockroach populations around your home.

It is very unsettling to open a brand new package of something just to find it infested with insects.  How did they get into that package?  The answer is that they were in the package when the food product was processed at the factory.  Then when the age, humidity, and temperature of the food product get just right the insects hatch out. From the infested food packages, the pests may spread to other exposed food.

                These Food Product Pests are usually found living in dried fruit, spices, flour, bran,  dried vegetables, dried flowers, grains, milled cereal products, dried dog and cat food, nuts, candy, pasta, grits, cake mixes, and other similar processed dried or grain products.

                The first step in controlling Food Product Pests is to locate the source of the infestation.  All susceptible foods should be thoroughly inspected and infested items be discarded.  You need to take the time to go through the pantry and inspect those items in question. 

                Insects in infested foods may be killed by heat or cold if the item is of value and need to be saved.  Invested foods may be placed in an oven at 130 degrees for 30 minutes or into a freezer at 0 degrees for 4 days to kill live insects and their eggs.  If insects are out of the food package and active, you can vacuum or dry wipe up all insects and wash the area with warm soapy water. If insects reappear after you have inspected and discarded infested food items take the time to re-inspect and discard any new infested items and look for the source of the problem.

            Centipedes are very common here in Southwest Florida.  Sometimes confused with millipedes do not damage food or furnishings in your home. Centipedes are identified by having one pair of legs per body segment compared with millipedes that have two pair of legs per body segment and are usually brownish, flattened animals.  Centipedes are fast runners and grow to a length from 1 to 6 inches.  Centipedes have an appendage at the rear of their body that looks like a singer.  It is not, this appendage is designed for the Centipede to hold it's pray until it can eat it. 

Centipedes have poorly developed eyes and are most active at night.  They are active predators and feed mainly on insects and spiders.  All centipedes have venom glands to immobilize their prey.  The jaws of the smaller local species cannot penetrate human skin; however the larger species may inflict painful bites.  This is how they catch their food source which is spiders, small live insects and their larva.

            Centipedes live humid damp dark places such as under stones, leaf litter, logs, bark, ground cover and debris.  If they invade your home the Centipede could be found most likely in closets, bathrooms, and kitchen areas.

            Centipedes usually lay 15 to 55 eggs clustered together in the soil but sometimes they are laid singly.  The eggs hatch soon after they are deposited.  The female will usually guard the newly hatched young.  Young Centipedes closely resemble the adult and require 3 years to mature.  Centipedes are rather long-lived and individuals may live up to 6 years.

The common name "House Cricket" comes from the fact that thee crickets often enter houses where they can survive indefinitely. Having been introduced from Europe, this species is found throughout the United States but is a pest primarily east of the Rocky Mountains.  Crickets are nocturnal or active at night and usually hide in dark warm places during the day. Their presence is indicated by the male's chirping with is done y rubbing their front wings together.  His chirping serves to attract females.

            Outside, they are often attracted to electric lights in large numbers. When present in large numbers, crickets are a considerable annoyance and if inside can cause damage to some fabrics, such as wood, cotton, linens, rayon, and furs.  They will attack paper, all kinds of foods, and even rubber.  Outside, they feed on plants and dead or live insects, including other crickets.

            Crickets are closely related to cockroaches, their young look like adults except their wings are not fully developed.  The House Cricket lives primarily outdoors and especially in garbage dumps, but may invade houses.  They are omnivorous, eating or drinking almost anything that is available.

BOX ELDER BUGS PEST CONTROL EXTERMINATOR FORT MYERS BONTA SPRINGS NAPLES FLORIDA

BOX ELDER BUGS

            The Box Elder Bug is a nuisance in early spring because they enter homes and other buildings, often in large numbers.  Fortunately, they do not bite people and are essentially harmless to property.  These annoying bugs emerge out of their hibernated wintering sites starting the last week of March to the middle of April and can fly up to 2 miles feeding on a variety of trees and plants.  Box Elders can be found on and under trees and plants in large clusters, making the ground look blood red.  They are attracted to lights and will readily fly in open doors and windows. 

            The Box Elder Bugs are flat-backed, elongated, narrow, 1/2 inch long, 1/3 inch wide and dark brownish-black with three lengthwise red stripes on the pronotum (behind the head).  The head is black with the "beak" or proboscis reddish-orange and the long, thin, four segmented antennae, half as long as the body.  Wings are thick and leathery at the base and membranous at the tip.  There are red veins in the wings and the abdomen is bright red under the wings.

            Box Elders can be controlled very easily with anything from hot water, soapy water, to a general insecticide.

RATS RODENTS PEST CONTROL EXTERMINATOR FORT MYERS BONITA SPRINGS NAPLES FLORIDA

                Collier Pest Control is your Southwest Florida Pest Authority, including Rodent control.  The House Mouse is the most commonly encountered of all rodents.  The Norway and Roof Rat are two other common rodent pests.  Here in Southwest Florida we encounter the House Mouse and the Roof Rat or sometimes called the Black Rat, Palm Rat, Ship Rat, Grey Bellied Rat, or Tree Rat.  The word rodent means "to gnaw".  All rodents, mice, rats, squirrels possess chisel like incisor teeth which grow continuously throughout their lives.  These incisors are kept filed and sharp primarily by the rodents grinding and gnawing.

          Rodents are not only a nuisance; they damage, destroy things, eat and contaminate stored food, and they are also a human health danger as a disease carrier or vector of many diseases.  Rodents have been responsible for the spread of various diseases to people and domestic animals.  With modern technology for sanitation, effective drugs and specialized rodent and insect control programs, the disease threat from rodents is not as significant as it once was years ago.

          The House Mouse is thought to have spread from its origin of the grassy plains of central Asia throughout the world because of their small size and ability to survive on extremely small amounts of food.  The House Mouse is identified by a small slender body weighing 1/2 to 1 ounce as an adult with a smooth fur usually dusty gray.

          The Roof Rat is found in the lower third of the United State and primarily is a vegetarian eating seeds and plant food such as fresh vegetables and fruits.  The Roof Rat is appropriately named because by nature it is a climber and commonly lives above ground in trees, roofs, or aerial areas around structures.  The Roof Rat is identified by a pointed nose, long tail, large ears, large eyes, gray to black fur, and total weight of only 5 to 9 ounces.  The adult dropping is up to 1/2 inch long and pointed.  This dropping looks very like our green Cuban Gecko dropping.

          The importance to any successful rodent control program is pest identification, proper sanitation, harborage elimination, and rodent proofing of the building. Proper rodent control is based on the behavioral habits of the rodent.  Mice are very social and inquisitive.  They will explore anything new and only eat small amounts of food at any one time.  Roof Rats are also social and primarily nocturnal in habit. Roof Rats are very cautious and shy away from new objects and tend to eat their fill at one sitting.
