                Collier Pest Control is your Southwest Florida Pest Authority including the German Cockroaches.   The German Roach is the most common household insect pest found in the United States.  They are usually found infesting in food preparation areas, kitchens, and bathrooms.   In severe infestations, they have the capability of living in any portion of a heated structure.  They favor warm, humid atmospheres where temperatures are around 70 to 75 degrees.  The German Roach is most active at night and hides in secluded areas such as cupboards, behind cabinets, wall voids, and motor housings of appliances.

                The adult German Roach is about ½ inch long, brown, and has two dark longitudinal bands or streaks on the top the thorax (just behind the head).   German Roaches are regularly carried from place to place in such things as bagged potatoes, onion bags, beverage cartons, grocery bags, handbags, and in the folds of clothing.

                The German Roach has the highest reproductive potential of all common pest cockroaches.  Female German Roaches produce about 30 to 50 eggs at a time.  The eggs are contained in a capsule with is attached to the tip of the abdomen and carried throughout most of the incubation period.  The eggs hatch in about 28 days at room temperature, and reach maturity in 40 to 125 days.  Adult female German Roaches live about 200 days producing 6 to 8 egg capsules or 180 to 400 eggs.

                Sanitation is the cornerstone to effective and long lasting German Roach control.  Accessible water and food material must be eliminated as much as possible. Hiding, harborage areas need to be sealed off where possible.  Remove hiding areas like open trashcans, old newspapers, rag piles, unused grocery bags, unused boxes, excess grease and food around appliances, and any place a roach could hide or eat.

CRAZY ANTS

                Ants can be a nuisance here in Southwest Florida and one of the most persistent pest problems is the Crazy Ant.  This is a small brown to black ant about 1/10^th inch long with a tremendous amount of energy.  The Crazy Ant got named from the habit of running about very erratically with no apparent sense of direction.  They are sometimes recognized by their extremely long legs and antennae out of proportion to the other parts of their body.  This unusual feature is a good identifying characteristic.

                The Crazy Ant is found in the ground, dead logs, fence posts, hollow trees, mulch, potted plants, small cracks, crevices and voids inside structures, and wanders throughout the building searching for food.  The Crazy ant is very adaptable of nesting habits.  They will nest in both moist and relatively dry environments.  They prefer to feed on animal mater, grease and other insects, but will readily eat sweets, of all kinds.  The workers will forage up to 100 feet or more from the colony in search of food.

                Each colony contains numerous queens.  The Crazy Ant colony is very mobile and will move from one site to a new site if conditions become unfavorable.  New colonies are produced by budding or splitting apart.  Budding occurs when one or more queens and a group of workers split away from the original colony to form a new colony.

                Treating or controlling Crazy Ants consists of three steps.  First, is to correct any condition contributing to the infestation, such as excess moisture. Then, is locating and treating existing colonies, using baits and spray insecticides.  Finally, is to establish barriers of residual insecticide around the structure to try to prevent new Crazy Ants from entering the building.

                Patience will normally results in success.  Locations of the colonies are important, but if they cannot be found, baiting and a perimeter treatment will give a temporary relief of the problem.  Your cooperation in locating the colonies is a key element to the success of this treatment.

SWARMING SUBTERRANEAN TERMITES

                During the early winter to late spring of each year here in Southwest Florida, the Subterranean Termites produce winged Swarmers.  The purpose of these swarmers is to fly up onto the air, find a mate and start a new colony.  After mating, both the male and the female after mating land on a suitable nesting area, and lose their wings. When they swarm into your home, in most cases, they cannot do any damage to your home.  To start a nest, Subterranean Termites need a moist, wet, or rotten wood.  Unless you have one of those conditions the swarmer termites cannot hurt you.  Swarmer termites are attracted to light when they emerge from the colony.  They may be found in window sills or around your T.V. or ceiling lights.  Try not to spray these termite swarmers.  They will die within a few hours if no wooden moisture nesting area is found.  You can use a vacuum to rid yourself of these nuisance pests.

FICUS WHITE FLY PEST CONTROL EXTERMINATOR NAPLES BONITA SPRINGS FORT MYERS FLORIDA

DON’T LET FICUS FLIES DAMAGE YOUR HEDGES OR TREES 

If you see your Ficus Trees or Hedge suddenly loosing its leaves or turning brown and tiny white, gnat-like, adult whiteflies fly from the foliage.  DON’T WAIT contact us quickly!  You may have the Fig White Fly attacking your Ficus.  They can defoliate your trees and hedges very quickly.  Although your ficus tree or hedge may appear to be dying after losing a lot of leaves, it may not be a goner.  If the twigs are still flexible, it may refoliate in a few weeks.  Very Important:  if you find an infestation do not pt pruning clippers in the yard waste, trash pick-up.  Don’t spread the flies to other areas of our neighborhood.  Keep the clippings in a garbage bag or in compose piles to kill the flies.

These Fig White Flies are hard to see compared to other species of whiteflies.  The body of the adult Fig Whitefly is yellow in color and the wings are white with a faint grey band towards the middle of the wing and a grey longitudinal bar on the inside of the back edge of each  of the front wings. 

Ficus hedges and trees are not native to South Florida and these Fig White Flies are quickly spreading northward from Homestead since 2007.  Fortunately, these flies can be controlled.  First, you have to determine if you already have Fig Whitefly.  If not, keep monitoring your trees and hedges for early signs of an infestation, such as; leaves falling off or small gnat-like flies emerging from the foliage.

RODENTS

 

                Collier Pest Control is your Southwest Florida Pest Authority, including Rodent control.  The House Mouse is the most commonly encountered of all rodents.  The Norway and Roof Rat are two other common rodent pests.  Here in Southwest Florida we encounter the House Mouse and the Roof Rat or sometimes called the Black Rat, Palm Rat, Ship Rat, Grey Bellied Rat, or Tree Rat.  The word rodent means “to gnaw”.  All rodents, mice, rats, squirrels possess chisel like incisor teeth which grow continuously throughout their lives.  These incisors are kept filed and sharp primarily by the rodents grinding and gnawing.

          Rodents are not only a nuisance; they damage, destroy things, eat and contaminate stored food, and they are also a human health danger as a disease carrier or vector of many diseases.  Rodents have been responsible for the spread of various diseases to people and domestic animals.  With modern technology for sanitation, effective drugs and specialized rodent and insect control programs, the disease threat from rodents is not as significant as it once was years ago.

          The House Mouse is thought to have spread from its origin of the grassy plains of central Asia throughout the world because of their small size and ability to survive on extremely small amounts of food.  The House Mouse is identified by a small slender body weighing ½ to 1 ounce as an adult with a smooth fur usually dusty gray.

          The Roof Rat is found in the lower third of the United State and primarily is a vegetarian eating seeds and plant food such as fresh vegetables and fruits.  The Roof Rat is appropriately named because by nature it is a climber and commonly lives above ground in trees, roofs, or aerial areas around structures.  The Roof Rat is identified by a pointed nose, long tail, large ears, large eyes, gray to black fur, and total weight of only 5 to 9 ounces.  The adult dropping is up to ½ inch long and pointed.  This dropping looks very like our green Cuban Gecko dropping.

          The importance to any successful rodent control program is pest identification, proper sanitation, harborage elimination, and rodent proofing of the building. Proper rodent control is based on the behavioral habits of the rodent.  Mice are very social and inquisitive.  They will explore anything new and only eat small amounts of food at any one time.  Roof Rats are also social and primarily nocturnal in habit. Roof Rats are very cautious and shy away from new objects and tend to eat their fill at one sitting.
