            These occasional land dwelling crustacean invaders from the outside are arthropods and not insects.  They are more closely related to shrimp and crayfish than to insects. The Pill Bug are sometimes called “roly-polies” and get this common name because they roll up into a tight ball when disturbed.  Both are inactive during the day and remain hidden under objects to reduce moisture loss during the day.  They can be found around buildings in such places as under trash, boards, rocks, flower pots, piles of grass clippings, flower-bed mulches, and other decaying vegetation.

            They occasionally enter buildings via door thresholds, especially homes with sliding-glass doors on the ground level.  Indoor invasion typically means that there is a large population immediately outside the building.  Indoors both will not survive for more than a couple of days unless there are high moisture conditions and a food supply present.

            Pill and Sow bugs are scavenger and feed on decaying organic matter, usually plant material but occasionally animal, very similar to millipedes.  They cause not damage and are considered a nuisance pest indoors.  Outdoors they occasionally injure young plants.

            The key to controlling or eliminating Pill or Sow Bugs from your environment is to reduce or eliminate the moist areas which make their survival possible.  Removal of piles of grass clippings and leaves, store boxes, lumber, firewood, and flower pots of the ground, and provide adequate ventilation in crawl spaces.  An appropriate labeled residual pesticide can be applied to the foundation and walls of buildings, perimeter flower and plant beds, unfinished basements, and crawl spaces.

                The Florida Midge emerge from lakes in astronomical numbers, covering walls of homes, and forming heaps of wispy corpses under outdoor lights.  They are sometimes called blind mosquitoes because when their multitudes are disturbed in their resting places on lake shore sedges, they rise up with a mosquito-like whine and fly clumsily away among the vegetation, as to recognize a good meal when it walks into their back yard.  Actually, Midges do not feed during their short life of a day or two.  Since they do not feed they do not bite as adult mosquitoes.     

 This is time enough for myriads of them to vanish down the gullets of swallows, dragonflies, and fish.

The larva of the Midge lives in the mud of lakes and low water areas where each constructs a small open-ended tube. Through which they draw a little stream of water from which they remove algae and microscopic debris.  They act as the filter for our lakes and low water areas.  90% of all Midge activity takes place just before sundown.

            Control of the Midge is limited to reducing the lights around lakes and low water areas, stocking bodies of water with carp and goldfish, adding insect growth regulators to bodies of water, and light traps around the same bodies of water.

WHY ARE THERE MUSHROOMS IN MY LAWN? 

            First and foremost, DO NOT EAT WILD MUSHROOMS unless you are ABSOLUTELY sure you have identified the mushroom correctly and know that it is edible.  Many common lawn mushrooms are poisonous.  If you must eat a wild mushroom, leave one in case the poison control center needs an sample of what you ate.

            Mushrooms are truly unique organism, and their ability to recycle agricultural wastes, tree stumps, and other decomposing matter is usually not fully appreciated because they tend to do it right in the middle of our well cared for lawns!

            Mushrooms, sometimes called toadstools, are the reproductive (fruiting) structures of some kinds of fungi.  Many fungi do not produce visible fruiting structures, including those that cause many lawn diseases.  Most fungi in lawns however, are beneficial because they decompose organic matter, thereby releasing nutrients that are then available for plant growth.  Lawn mushrooms feed off decaying matter such as: old mulch, animal waste, rotting, tree stumps, or muck from newly laid sod.

            The mushrooms that you see are not the whole fungus.  You are in fact seeing the fruiting body, which has a prime function of spreading spores to create new colonies.  It is what’s going on under the ground that keeps the fungus alive.  Most mushrooms reproduce by releasing thousands of spores through their gills into open air for dispersion into the environment.

            Most mushrooms do not harm your lawn nor cause any damage.  But to rid you lawn of mushrooms, first find out why they are there.  Over watering, organic material in the soil, spores being blown in from a neighbor lawn, or decaying foliage near the lawn.

            Just mowing the mushrooms down will only spread the spores and give you more mushrooms.  To rid your lawn of mushrooms try reducing the water irrigating to a mininium to dry out the soil.  Thatch the lawn of excess lawn clippings and foliage to let the soil breathe and dry out.  Hand pick each mushroom with a plastic bag, not to let the spores drop on the ground.  If mushrooms are associated with a lawn fungus called Fairy Ring.  Have the lawn treated with the proper fungicide by a professional pest control operator.  If there is no sign of other damaging fungi on your lawn, you can sometimes eliminate mushrooms growing from organic matter by applying nitrogen fertilizer.  This helps, because fertilization speeds up decomposition of organic matter.  If you fertilize with nitrogen and there is damaging fungi on your lawn, the nitrogen will cause the damaging fungi to spread quickly thorough out the lawn.  Or, rather than trying to kill mushrooms, enjoy their beauty and just what till the weather or environment changes and the mushrooms just stop returning.

PLASTER BAG WORMS

            The Plaster Bag Worm is similar in appearance and closely related to clothes moths.    This unique looking creature is easily seen on light colored walls.  Close examination of the house may reveal bagworms attached to the underside of chairs, bookcases, and other furniture.  They are often found along the edge of rugs, near baseboards, or on the lower edges of walls.  Bagworms are quite common in garages and underneath buildings.  This larva mainly feed on spider webs; however, they will also feed on fabrics made of natural fiber

The larva of bagworms lives in a flatten gray, watermelon seed shaped case about ½ inch long.  The case is constructed of silken fiber and sand particles, lint, paint fragments, and other debris attached.  The case has a slit like opening at each end, and the larva is able to move around and feed from either end.

Control of the Plaster Bagworm Larva is similar to control of clothes moths.  Good housekeeping is important, especially the removal of spider webs.  Sweep down and remove any spider webs and Plaster Bagworm casings.

            Just to say the word Termites in conjunction with your home sends chills into many a heart.  Collier Pest Control, Southwest Florida’s Pest Authority, can relieve you from the termite anxiety forever. We want to educate as many home owners as possible to the risk of termite infestation.  We want to show all home owners that they do not need to be forever worried that the house they live in will be destroyed from wood deriving termites.

            Termites have been around for over 250 million years.  They are social insects and live in colonies which are usually located in the ground or in wood.  These colonies contain castes or groups of individuals who share the same body form and job description.  The common castes are workers, soldiers, swarmers, or secondary reproductive’s.  Each has a purpose and job responsibility in the colony. Workers maintain the colony, soldiers protect the colony from other insects such as ants, and the reproductive’s, including the queen, are responsible for reproducing more termites to maintain the colony. A successful colony’s queen may live up to or more than 30 years. New colonies are formed by either a founding pair of reproductive swarmers or by isolation of a portion of a large colony.  After the swarming flight, mated queens lay few eggs the first year, as few as 22.

 Most termites feed on cellulose from wood and wood by product such as paper; some tropical species feed on fungi, carrion, etc.  They are worldwide in distribution with about 2,500 described species, and about 50 species are found in the United States.

The question is often asked as to how many years are required before a newly constructed building will show signs of a termite infestation.  If a colony is started by a pair of termites swarmers at the time of construction, at least 3 or 4 years are required before even a few swarmers will be produced.  Evidence of damage may take longer.  However, if the structure is built over or close to a strong existing colony of termites, hundreds of swarmers may appear within a year and substantial damage might be noticed with a year.

            Termites are usually divided into 3 groups based on the location of their colony: the subterranean, the Drywood, and the dampwood termites.

            It is necessary to know which termite group is causing the problem because each group has quite different biologically and therefore requires different control methods.

            The University of Florida has found that 2/3 of all Florida homes can have a termite infestation within 5 years after being built because of chemical barrier failure. Dr. Phil Kohler, of The University of Florida says: “It’s NOT if your home will get termites but WHEN it will get termites”. He also states: “We live in a sea of termites here in Florida.  Virtually all areas of Florida have termites.”  There are two problems to understand, the first is just mentioned above with building over an existing colony. The other is that since1987 the government canceled the use of all long term liquid termite and insect controlling materials, such as Chlordane, to protect your home. Those liquid materials would protect a structure for many years, even 10’s of years to come.  The liquid materials we now have to protect your home will only last a few years, maybe if weather conditions do not interfere, 5 to 7 years, IF APPLIED PROPERLY!  Unfortunately, there are many pest control operators and contractors that DO NOT follow the proper application procedures.  If these application procedures are not followed exactly, the protection to your home will be even shortened or non-existent than the 5 to 7 years for liquid pre-treatment termite service.

            If your home is older than 5 years and you have not had your home retreated with a liquid termite treatment or you do not have an inground termite baiting system, your home is at risk for a termite infestation.  This does not mean you have a termite infestation currently, it is just at risk because there is no protection in the ground to keep the termites away from your home.         

            It very important that if you own a home in this area, you have that home inspected yearly for any termite infestations.  This will give you the peace of mind and assurance to know that you will not have any costly surprises arise from hidden termite damage.  As you have read above, termites can hide for years before being noticed, or they can be active almost immediately with existing colonies near your home.
