          The Pyramid Ant is a native species to Florida and is common throughout the southern United States.  They receive their name from the distinctive pyramid like elevation on the back of their thorax. There are two types of Pyramid Ants.  The common type of Pyramid Ant varies in color from uniformly dark brown to brown with a reddish tint, with the abdomen usually dark.  Recently a second type of Pyramid Ant is identified by being pale yellowish to light. The pale Pyramid Ant has a single queen nest but the darker Pyramid Ant has multiple queen nests which are commonly found outside in dry sunny areas such as the lawn, pastures, sandy ground, gardens, and flower bed.

            The Pyramid Ant is particularly fond of honeydew and will tend honeydew-producing insects such as aphids.  They also feed on live and dead insects and sweets.

            According to the Florida State Statutes, you as the landlord are responsible for the extermination of insects in your rental dwelling including bed bugs.  The law clearly intends that a landlord is responsible to maintain a safe and healthy residence for tenants.  In Florida, the Florida Statutes Chapter 83.51 maintains that "unless otherwise agreed in writing?.the landlord of a dwelling unit?.shall at all times, during the tenancy, make reasonable provisions for 1) the extermination of ?..bed bugs.  The tenant shall be required to temporarily vacate the premises for a period of time not to exceed four days, on seven days' written notice, if necessary?."

            However, the law does state that the rental agreement can be modified to transfer the responsibility for bed bug control to the tenant.  Because of the cost of bed bug treatments, many leases now transfer the cost of bed bug treatment to the tenant.  Tenants are usually cash-strapped and cannot afford bed bug treatments, so the bed bug problem will escalate and become intense.

            From the tenant's perspective, an infestation of bed bugs may have spread from surrounding infested apartments.  Then tenants believe the landlord should have the money from rents paid to pay for treatments. 

            From the landlord's perspective tenants fail to cooperate with treatments and often reintroduce bed bugs after they have been eliminated.  Of course, it is difficult for a landlord to tell whether bed bugs were re-introduced or not controlled with the treatments.

            So, the debate continues.  Who should pay for a bed bug infestation in a rental dwelling?  Unless you spell out in your lease to your tenant, you are responsible for all insect control in your rental units according to the Florida Statutes.  This information is for you to be informed and to protect yourself against the rising costs of bed bug treatments.  We have been involved with the Health Department in a few rental disputes on who was responsible for the bed bug treatment and control.  The landlord has been told in those cases that they are responsible and has to arrange and pay for the bed bug treatment.

                Collier Pest Control is your Southwest Florida Pest Authority, including Rodent control.  The House Mouse is the most commonly encountered of all rodents.  The Norway and Roof Rat are two other common rodent pests.  Here in Southwest Florida we encounter the House Mouse and the Roof Rat or sometimes called the Black Rat, Palm Rat, Ship Rat, Grey Bellied Rat, or Tree Rat.  The word rodent means "to gnaw".  All rodents, mice, rats, squirrels possess chisel like incisor teeth which grow continuously throughout their lives.  These incisors are kept filed and sharp primarily by the rodents grinding and gnawing.

                Rodents are not only a nuisance; they damage, destroy things, eat and contaminate stored food, and they are also a human health danger as a disease carrier or vector of many diseases.  Rodents have been responsible for the spread of various diseases to people and domestic animals.  With modern technology for sanitation, effective drugs and specialized rodent and insect control programs, the disease threat from rodents is not as significant as it once was years ago.

                The House Mouse is thought to have spread from its origin of the grassy plains of central Asia throughout the world because of their small size and ability to survive on extremely small amounts of food.  The House Mouse is identified by a small slender body weighing 1/2 to 1 ounce as an adult with a smooth fur usually dusty gray.

                The Roof Rat is found in the lower third of the United State and primarily is a vegetarian eating seeds and plant food such as fresh vegetables and fruits.  The Roof Rat is appropriately named because by nature it is a climber and commonly lives above ground in trees, roofs, or aerial areas around structures.  The Roof Rat is identified by a pointed nose, long tail, large ears, large eyes, gray to black fur, and total weight of only 5 to 9 ounces.  The adult dropping is up to 1/2 inch long and pointed.  This dropping looks very like our green Cuban Gecko dropping.

                The importance to any successful rodent control program is pest identification, proper sanitation, harborage elimination, and rodent proofing of the building. Proper rodent control is based on the behavioral habits of the rodent.  Mice are very social and inquisitive.  They will explore anything new and only eat small amounts of food at any one time.  Roof Rats are also social and primarily nocturnal in habit. BROWN RECLUSE SPIDER 

                THE BROWN RECLUSE SPIDER: is not an established species here in Southwest Florida or in Florida, but physicians have diagnosed a few bites in Florida. Its natural habitat is along the Mississippi River, especially in Northwest Arkansas and Southern Missouri. The Brown Recluse Spider is identified by its distinctive dark violin-shaped marking locate on the head and thorax. This Spider is a light tan to deep reddish-brown in color and 1/4 to 1/2 inch long.

            The Brown Recluse Spider if seen is usually in very undisturbed places like shed and barns that are almost never used, parts of garages or storage areas that are almost never dealt with, parked cars, decking, unused closets, unused beds, or a place that contains a supply of insects for its food source.

             The Brown Recluse Spider is shy and only bites humans when trapped in clothing or a person rolls over on then or gets in direct contact with them. The bite from a Brown Recluse Spider is usually not noticed and no pain is noticed for 2 to 3 hours.  A blister will arise at the site of the bite, followed by inflammation.  Eventually the tissue around the bite will die, leaving a sunken sore.  Healing may take a long as 6 to 8 weeks or longer.  As with any insect bite, if you develop muscle pain, nausea, sweating, difficulty in breathing, or blistering at the site of the bite.  Seek medical attention immediately.
