            The Caribbean Crazy Ant for many years has been a nuisance to the east coast of Florida.  We now have the Caribbean Crazy Ant here in Southwest Florida.  This ant resembles a small fire ant in appearance but is harmless and does not sting or bite.  It does however, infest neighborhood with multitudes of ants that overrun homes and businesses. 

            The Caribbean Crazy Ant is a small golden brown to reddish brown ant with a smooth glossy body covered with tiny hairs has longer antennae, like the black crazy ant.  This ant likes to nest near the ground under objects for protection.  It has been found under palm fronds, logs, railroad ties, trees, shrubs, along sidewalks, cracks in concrete, leaves, lumber, electrical conduits, metal, mulch, and even sod.   This ant is extremely resourceful in foraging for food.  Each Caribbean Crazy Ant colony could have over 5 million or more ants and have been known to have millions of ants trail over a 1/2 mile from their nest for food.   They will feed on dead insects and tend honeydew producers on plants.  They also group together multiple colonies to support their nests.  This ant can infest total communities within a short period of time because of their numbers in each colony.

            The control of the Caribbean Crazy Ant is not as easy as other types of ants.  First nesting sites need to be removed from the area as stated above.  Clean up all debris and items that are on or near the ground.  The nests should be located or the trails followed back to see where the nests could be located.  This ant will move their nests rapidly when disturbed.  With many millions of worker ants in each colony, a repeated insecticide spraying followed by a thorough baiting with sweet ant killing baits of all the infested area must be applied.

                Spiders are arachnids not insects.  Arachnids have 8 legs, no antennae, and 2 body regions.  Insects have 6 legs, 1 pair of antennae, and 3 body regions.  There are about 37,000 species of spiders that have been named.  This represents only about 1/4^th the total amount of all spiders.  Luckily only a few types are considered household pests and almost all spiders found in Florida are harmless to humans.  Almost all spiders possess venom, but most cannot penetrate the skin of humans with their fangs.

                Poisonous spiders, specifically those dangerous to humans, are few in number.  Only five species of venomous spiders occur in Florida, which are; The Southern Black widow, The Northern Black Widow, The Red Widow, The Brown Widow, and occasionally seen The Brown Recluse.  If bitten by a spider, keep it in rubbing alcohol for a positive identification by a professional.  If it happens to be one of these venomous spiders you might need medical attention immediately.  Collier Pest Control recommends if bitten by any spider or insects.  First, try to identify the species of pest you where bitten by.  Then, rub the bitten area of your body with ammonia, and then cover the bitten area with ice to reduce the swelling to the area.  If you are not sensitive or allergic to spider or insect bites, the irritation from the bite will be reduced within a few minutes.  If you have had an experience with sensitivity or allergic reaction to spider or insect bites, seek medical attention immediately.   Bring the pest that bit you to the medical attendant for proper identification.

                Most spiders live one to two seasons.  Some primitive spiders can live up to 10 years. A female spider does not ordinarily feast on her mate as fable tells us, but males do die soon after mating.  Spiders require shedding their exoskeleton usually 4 to 12 times before becoming an adult. 

                All Spiders are predators that depend mostly on live insects for their food source.  They will also feed on other spiders when available.  Some Spiders make webs to snare their prey; others are hunters that search for their prey.  When feeding on their prey, spiders inject a digestive fluid into their prey before eating it.  Spiders can survive for long periods of time without feeding.  Some Spiders have kept alive for over 2 years without feeding.  Spiders never feed on plants or non-living materials, including grains and fabrics.

                Some Spiders are associated with moisture and found in basements, crawl spaces, and damp parts of buildings.  Other types of Spiders live in warm dray places.  These can be found in subfloor air vents, and upper corners of rooms and attics,   newly hatched Spiders are very tiny and can easily enter your home through screens and around loose fitting doors and windows.  Spiders regularly hid in cracks, darkened areas, or other retreats which they construct of silk.

                Controlling Spiders indoors may involve nothing more than vacuuming up the Spiders, their webs, and egg sacs.  Removal of clutter or other sanitation steps directed at the conditions favoring Spiders will help reduce Spider infestation.  Successful Spider management indoors begins by eliminating the Spiders food source with are insects and other Spiders. FIRE ANTS 

            Ants are among the most successful of all insects and the Fire Ant has developed into a very aggressive member of success.  Not only are they damaging to agriculture but also dangerous to young animals and humans.

            There are 4 types of Fire Ants found in the United States.  The original Fire Ant was found in coastal areas of the southern U.S., particularly in Florida.  This ant is reddish brown to dark in color and is 1/16^th of an inch long.  The original Fire Ant does not make large dirt mounds in the soil, and is not always aggressive to sting when in contact with animals or human.

            The Red Imported Fire Ant is found in coastal plain areas of the southern states, from South Carolina, south along the Atlantic coast into southern Florida, across the southern states into much of the eastern half of Texas. This ant is a touch larger than the Original Fire Ant, reddish brown to dark in color, makes large mounds of dirt in the soil, and is very aggressive to sting when in contact with animals or humans. Large colonies of this ant can have up to 300 to 500,000 workers, which live from 1 to 9 months, can forage over 100 yards from the nest.  Some Red Imported Fire Ant colonies have multiple queen colonies of up to 60 queens that can live up to 7 years. These ants also produce super colonies that have workers from different colonies supporting and tending to more than one colony in the same area.

            The Black Imported Fire Ants are only around the northern end of the border between Mississippi and Alabama.  Once quite common in the southern U.S., it has been displaced by competition from the Imported Fire Ant.  The Black Fire Ant has no importance to us in Florida since it is not here.

            The fourth and smallest of all Fire Ants is the Tropical Little Fire Ant found in Florida and California.  The Tropical Little Fire Ant is small about 1/15^th of an inch long.  This ant is lighter reddish to red in color and lives outside in mulch, logs, under stones, high moisture areas and next to structures.  This ant moves around very slowly and is sensitive to cold, and appears only in the warmest weather.  The Tropical Little Fire Ant is a serious household pest, contaminating food and infesting unlaundered clothing and beds.  All of the fire ant types feed on organic material, body oils, dead insects, food scraps, and even oil products such as grease and silicone.

            All fire ants are notorious for their painful, burning sting that results in a pustule of intense itching, which may persist for several days.  Some people have allergic reactions to fire ant stings that range from rashes and swelling to paralysis and death.  Immediate first aid is vital for all fire ant stings.  If a person is exhibiting symptoms of dizziness, nausea, sweating, swelling of affected area, headache, or shortness of breath they should seek medical attention.  If none of these symptoms are present, apply ice and ammonia on the affected area for temporary relief. To prevent secondary infection, keep affected area clean and do not scratch or break pustules.

WHITE FOOT ANT PEST CONTROL SERVICE SOUTHWEST FLORIDA

WHITE FOOT ANTS

            The White Footed ant is native to tropical Asia, but has been inadvertently introduce into South Florida.  The White Footed Ant arrived in the Homestead are of Florida in 1986, followed by rapidly spreading up and out expanding throughout the rest of South Florida.

                The White Footed Ants are relatively small ants with a black body and yellowish-white feet, called tibia and tarsi.  These ants do not bite or sting, nor have they been reported to cause any type of structural damage.  They are just a nuisance ant attracted to sweet foods.  Thus, it is common to find them foraging indoors around kitchens and bathrooms, and outside on hedges infested with honeydew producing insects, such as aphid and scales.

                White Footed Ants, for many pest control companies, have been extremely difficult to control because of several characteristics of their biology.  One big problem is that they establish colonies of well over a million ants, over half being worker ants.  Workers ants are sterile females that are responsible for foraging for food and caring for the nest.  Another problem is that food ingested by the worker ants is never shared back in the colony, as like most every other type of ant.  These sterile worker ants are capable of laying unfertilized eggs.  These Thinner more fragile non fertile eggs are what the worker ants, larva, and queens in the colony use as their food source, therefore, any toxic bait to kill off ants never reach the ants in a White Foot Ant colony, and only affect the foraging worker ants that eat the insect killing baits.
