GHOST ANTS

          The Ghost Ant has become the number one pest ant found in Southwest Florida. This ant is identified by the worker ants running erratically and rapidly on a set trail that can be traced back to the nest.  They are very tiny, about 1/32 of an inch long, and derives its name from the fact that it is very difficult to see.  The head and thorax of the Ghost Ant is dark in color and the abdomen and legs are very pale.  This forces a person to look very closely at surfaces just to see the workers moving about.  They will create trails from just a few ants to hundreds. 

                These trails can usually be located along building foundations and up the walls outdoors.  Ghost ants will readily trail down branches of trees and shrubs into the structure, and through cracks around eaves and soffits.  The Ghost Ant's primary habitat is outdoors.  They will nest in the soil, dead tree limbs, under stones, and in hollow cavities of plants.  Inside, the Ghost Ant will nest inside wall voids, behind base boards, and under cabinets. 

                Each Ghost Ant colony is moderate in size, with thousands of workers and numerous reproductive queens.  New colonies are started by "budding" where one or more reproductive queens, together with workers and brood (larvae and pupae), move away from the original colony. 

                The worker Ghost Ant is very fond of honeydew secreted by aphids, but will also feed upon live and dead insects.  Moisture is a limiting factor in the survival of Ghost Ants. They have a very high need for moisture. 

                Conditions which result in excess moisture such as poor drainage or plumbing leaks should be corrected.  If possible, a vegetation free border should be installed around the foundation.  Branches of trees and shrubs which

touch the structure should be trimmed back.  Successful control of the Ghost Ant depends upon the ability to locate

the foraging ants and  the nest sites.  The liberal use of bait in proper locations works well when combined with an exterior power spray treatment.  The Ghost Ant can often be controlled within a few days.

            They're huge and they move around and look like they're looking at you. South Florida is fighting a growing infestation of one of the world's most destructive invasive species: the Giant African Land Snail, which can grow as big as a rat and gnaw through stucco and plaster. Florida is used to strange creatures, but the discovery of this non-native animal, a giant snail from East Africa, has got local officials really worried.  It is thought to have originated in East Africa, but has since spread through many countries in Southeast Asia and islands in the Pacific Ocean, including the Hawaiian Islands. More recently, this mollusc gained access to South America (Brazil) and the Caribbean islands of Martinique, Guadeloupe, Saint Lucia, Barbados and Saint Martin/Saint Maarten. In 1966 it was found in Miami-Dade County of southern Florida.

            The snails attack pretty much anything that's in their path. Each snail can live as long as nine years. In a typical year, every mated adult lays about 1,200 eggs. Giant African Land Snail grows to a length of nearly 8 inches (20 cm) and a diameter of 5 inches (13 cm). It is conical in shape, tapering to a distinct point at one end, but rounded at the other. Although varied in appearance, this snail typically is light brown, with dark brown stripes

            This creature is a pest in homes because of their fondness for stucco, devoured for the calcium content they need for their shells. The Giant African Land Snail is most abundant in unnatural (disturbed) areas such as gardens. Typically, they have a daytime resting site and then wander out at night to feed. Adults often return to their resting site in the morning, but immature snails are less likely to do so. They normally seek shaded, sheltered resting locations with high humidity, but can climb trees and walls to rest.

            Snails are hermaphrodites, which means that they contain both female and male reproductive organs. Upon hatching, young snails remaining in the soil for 1-2 weeks before digging their way to the surface and feeding on decaying plant matter (detritus) and suitable living plants. These Giant African Land Snails are active over a temperature range of about 48-90°F (9-32°C), but can survive both lower and higher temperatures, sometimes by burrowing into the soil

            Snails favor high humidity. Therefore, elimination of mulch, ground cover and other dense vegetation, wood and stones will deny them a moist, sheltering environment. Reducing the amount of irrigation may similarly deny them the moist environment they prefer.

Snails are susceptible to traps.  Giant African snail seems to be particularly attracted to banana and papaya fruit, so these can be used as baits to attract them.

            Snails often are large enough to be seen easily, so they can be collected by hand. It is important to wear gloves or to use an implement to pick up the snails as some snails can carry diseases transmitted to humans by touch.  The Giant African Land Snail also has proven to be injurious by transmitting disease organisms to plants and animals, including humans. It can serve as an intermediate host for rat lungworm, which can cause meningoencephalitis in humans, although no such cases have yet been identified in the United States.  If you do collect snails, you can kill them by sealing them in a plastic bag and then placing the bag in a freezer overnight.

DON’T LET FICUS FLIES DAMAGE YOUR HEDGES OR TREES 

If you see your Ficus Trees or Hedge suddenly loosing its leaves or turning brown and tiny white, gnat-like, adult whiteflies fly from the foliage.  DON’T WAIT contact us quickly!  You may have the Fig White Fly attacking your Ficus.  They can defoliate your trees and hedges very quickly.  Although your ficus tree or hedge may appear to be dying after losing a lot of leaves, it may not be a goner.  If the twigs are still flexible, it may refoliate in a few weeks.  Very Important:  if you find an infestation do not pt pruning clippers in the yard waste, trash pick-up.  Don’t spread the flies to other areas of our neighborhood.  Keep the clippings in a garbage bag or in compose piles to kill the flies.

These Fig White Flies are hard to see compared to other species of whiteflies.  The body of the adult Fig Whitefly is yellow in color and the wings are white with a faint grey band towards the middle of the wing and a grey longitudinal bar on the inside of the back edge of each  of the front wings. 

Ficus hedges and trees are not native to South Florida and these Fig White Flies are quickly spreading northward from Homestead since 2007.  Fortunately, these flies can be controlled.  First, you have to determine if you already have Fig Whitefly.  If not, keep monitoring your trees and hedges for early signs of an infestation, such as; leaves falling off or small gnat-like flies emerging from the foliage.

            The Caribbean Crazy Ant is a small golden brown to reddish brown ant with a smooth glossy body covered with tiny hairs has longer antennae, like the black crazy ant.  This ant likes to nest near the ground under objects for protection.  It has been found under palm fronds, logs, railroad ties, trees, shrubs, along sidewalks, cracks in concrete, leaves, lumber, electrical conduits, metal, mulch, and even sod.   This ant is extremely resourceful in foraging for food.  Each Caribbean Crazy Ant colony could have over 5 million or more ants and have been known to have millions of ants trail over a ½ mile from their nest for food.   They will feed on dead insects and tend honeydew producers on plants.  They also group together multiple colonies to support their nests.  This ant can infest total communities within a short period of time because of their numbers in each colony.

Sometimes called the Flower Ant, the Floricola Ant is found in tropical and sub-tropical regions.  This small and slender ant is widely known to attack other insect eggs, including butterflies.  The Floricola Ant can be distinguished by their distinctive bi-colored body, with a pale thorax and darker brown head and gaster, and a clubbed 3 segmented antenna and 2 nodes between their thorax and their gaster. 

The Floricola is primarily forming large colonies in bushes, dry stems of grasses, and trees as well as in small voids or cracks in homes to varying degrees.  They are a common urban pest in most tropical countries.

The Floricola lives on living and dead insects.   Sucking the sap from insects and collecting honeydew off plants, giving them the generic name as the flower ant.

                Scorpions are flattened, crab like animals having 10 legs and a fleshy tail.  They have an upturned up stinger at the end of their tail.  There are over 1200 species of scorpions, but only 20 to 30 types are in the United States.  They are unique as they do not lay eggs and their young are born alive.  After they are born, the mother will carry them until their first molt.  Scorpions are most active at night hiding under boards, bark, rubbish, buildings of the ground, debris, under foliage growth, and palm fronds.

                Scorpion’s sting!  But, only sting when provoked or disturbed.  The sting of the Common Striped Scorpion is painful but not dangerous to our health except for those persons who exhibit allergic reactions to insect stings.  Normally, strong ammonia will help the pain and icing the sting will keep the swelling down. There have been no deaths from Scorpion stings in Florida. 

                Scorpions have poor eye sight and being nocturnal and predaceous, they feed on insects, spiders, or small animal wildlife.  They do not stalk their prey, but wait to grab it alive with their pinchers.

Florida Lizards 

            Newcomers who spend any time in your Florida yard will notice a few unusual holdovers from the Dinosaur era.  Children and pets love to play with our local lizards, while inside your home lizards are considered to be a nuisance. Many different kinds of lizards inhabit our landscapes.  Lizards in the yard are a sign of a healthy landscape and will reduce the pest populations around your home.

            Lizards are four-legged reptiles with a long scaly body, movable eyelids, and a long tapering tail, typically living in hot dry regions.

            Lizards are a widespread group of reptiles, with more than 5,600 species, ranging across all continents except Antarctica, as well as most oceanic island chains. Sight is very important for most lizards, both for locating prey and for communication. Most lizards rely heavily on body language, using specific postures, gestures, and movements to define territory, resolve disputes, and entice mates. Some species of lizards also use bright colors, such as the iridescent patches on the belly. These colors would be highly visible to predators, so they are often hidden on the underside or between scales and only revealed when necessary.  A particular innovation in this respect is the brightly colored patch of skin on the throat, usually hidden between scales. When a display is needed, a lizard can erect the hyoid bone of its throat, resulting in a large vertical flap of brightly colored skin beneath the head which can then be used for communication. Anoles (a type of gecko) are particularly famous for this display, with each species having specific colors, including patterns only visible under ultraviolet (UV) light, as many lizards can see UV light. Many lizard species are also capable of severing their tail when faced with danger, an act called autonomy. Although severing and re-growing tails is a strenuous process for a lizard, this mechanism is often used to save their lives.

            South Florida has only one of the larger native lizard species.  The 5 inch long rare Florida Scrub Lizard is a pale or grayish brown with two dark brown stripes that run from the head to its tail and is found mostly on the ground.

            Geckos are small to medium sized, smooth, nocturnal insect-eating lizard with a long thin body and small limbs.  They emerge at night to catch insects around outdoor lights, clinging to walls and windows. There are more than 2,000 know species of geckos, and many more are likely undiscovered.  Not normally thought of as a North American species with many species have been introduced, there are geckos that are native to Florida, 

            The reef gecko is the smallest native North American lizard found in the Florida Keys.

            The Green Anole, 5-8 inches long, is the most common local native lizard.  Often mistaken for a non-native chameleon, the Green Anole inhabits tree and shrubs, changing color from emerald green to a medium or dark brown.

            The Brown Anole is similar looking but more abundant than the green anole.  It was accidentally introduced from the West Indies in the early 1900’s.

            Skinks are smooth, shiny lizards with tiny limbs and cylindrical bodies. Usually they have very stubby legs with long bodies, and look pretty snake-like. Skinks are small tropical lizard or subtropical nocturnal insect-eating lizards with hooked ridges on the pads of its feet that permit it to climb smooth vertical surfaces.  The Florida Sand Skink, the Glass Lizard, the Southeastern Five-lined Skink and the Ground Skink are native to Florida.

The Roof Rat is an introduced species of rat native to southern Asia.  It was brought to America on the first ships to reach the New World and has spread around the world.  This rat is the same species that carried the bubonic plague around the world and is also the reservoir host for murine typhus.  Roof Rats are the worst rodent pest in the State of Florida and most abundant.  A typical roof rat is between 13 and 18 inches long from nose to tail.  It is commonly known as the black rat or palm squirrel, but is often dark brown in color.  Unlike other rats, their tails are longer than the length of their bodies and they have large ears.  Roof rats will nest in trees, woodpiles, garbage and plants, but they generally like inside high places, like attics.  They are good climbers and only need a hole the size of a quarter to gain entry.  They primarily consume fruits and nuts, although they will eat anything.  They tend to hoard food for consuming later.  They are known for hollowing out citrus fruit in trees.  Control of roof rats is not an easy task.  Professional Pest Management is needed to control these pests.  The tools of a Professional Pest Control Technician includes; the knowledge of cultural control (prevention and habitat management): Physical control (trapping and exclusion): Biological control (predators like snakes): and if needed chemical control (rodent baits and repellents).

The common name “House Cricket” comes from the fact that thee crickets often enter houses where they can survive indefinitely. Having been introduced from Europe, this species is found throughout the United States but is a pest primarily east of the Rocky Mountains.  Crickets are nocturnal or active at night and usually hide in dark warm places during the day.             Crickets are closely related to cockroaches, their young look like adults except their wings are not fully developed.  The House Cricket lives primarily outdoors and especially in garbage dumps, but may invade houses.  They are omnivorous, eating or drinking almost anything that is available.

            Ants are among the most successful of all insects and the Fire Ant has developed into a very aggressive member of success.  Not only are they damaging to agriculture but also dangerous to young animals and humans.

            There are 4 types of Fire Ants found in the United States.  The original Fire Ant was found in coastal areas of the southern U.S., particularly in Florida.  This ant is reddish brown to dark in color and is 1/16^th of an inch long.  The original Fire Ant does not make large dirt mounds in the soil, and is not always aggressive to sting when in contact with animals or human.

            The Red Imported Fire Ant is found in coastal plain areas of the southern states, from South Carolina, south along the Atlantic coast into southern Florida, across the southern states into much of the eastern half of Texas. This ant is a touch larger than the Original Fire Ant, reddish brown to dark in color, makes large mounds of dirt in the soil, and is very aggressive to sting when in contact with animals or humans. Large colonies of this ant can have up to 300 to 500,000 workers, which live from 1 to 9 months, can forage over 100 yards from the nest.  Some Red Imported Fire Ant colonies have multiple queen colonies of up to 60 queens that can live up to 7 years. These ants also produce super colonies that have workers from different colonies supporting and tending to more than one colony in the same area.

            The Black Imported Fire Ants are only around the northern end of the border between Mississippi and Alabama.  Once quite common in the southern U.S., it has been displaced by competition from the Imported Fire Ant.  The Black Fire Ant has no importance to us in Florida since it is not here.

            The fourth and smallest of all Fire Ants is the Tropical Little Fire Ant found in Florida and California.  The Tropical Little Fire Ant is small about 1/15^th of an inch long.  This ant is lighter reddish to red in color and lives outside in mulch, logs, under stones, high moisture areas and next to structures.  This ant moves around very slowly and is sensitive to cold, and appears only in the warmest weather.  The Tropical Little Fire Ant is a serious household pest, contaminating food and infesting unlaundered clothing and beds.  All of the fire ant types feed on organic material, body oils, dead insects, food scraps, and even oil products such as grease and silicone.

            All fire ants are notorious for their painful, burning sting that results in a pustule of intense itching, which may persist for several days.  Some people have allergic reactions to fire ant stings that range from rashes and swelling to paralysis and death.  Immediate first aid is vital for all fire ant stings.  If a person is exhibiting symptoms of dizziness, nausea, sweating, swelling of affected area, headache, or shortness of breath they should seek medical attention.  If none of these symptoms are present, apply ice and ammonia on the affected area for temporary relief. To prevent secondary infection, keep affected area clean and do not scratch or break pustules.

Rugose Spiraling Whitefly

 

The Rugose Spiraling Whitefly originated in Central America.  This is not the same whitefly that is currently causing defoliation and branch dieback of ficus in South Florida.  These whiteflies are small winged insects.  They typically feed on the underside of leaves with their needle-like mouthparts.  Whiteflies can seriously injure host plants by sucking nutrients from the plant causing wilting, yellowing, stunting, leaf drop, or even death.

The Rugose Spiraling Whitefly has a very broad host range from palms to woody ornamentals and fruits.  It has been seen on gumbo limbo, black olive, copperleaf, broadleaf arrowhead, Brazilian pepper, wax myrtle, live oak, mango, and several palms.

The adults congregate on the undersides of the leaves to feed and reproduce.  The female lays here eggs in a spiral pattern on the leaves and also deposits a white, waxy substance on the eggs.  The crawler stage hatches from the eggs and crawls around before it starts to feed with its “needle-like” mouthparts.  This stage is very small and difficult to see.

The most noticeable symptoms of an infestation of this whitefly is the abundance of white, waxy material covering the leaves and also excessive black sooty mold.  The actual effect of an infestation of Rugose Spiraling Whitefly on the health of a plant is unknown; however, whiteflies in general can cause plant decline, defoliation and branch dieback.

Monitor plants for early signs of an infestation.  Small potted plants can be washed off with water.  Larger plants can be controlled with horticultural oil or insecticidal soap or most likely will need an insecticide spraying and root drenching by a professional lawn pest control company to control these whiteflies.  They will use a systemic insecticide product that can be applied directly to the infested plant or the soil.

DRYWOOD TERMITES

 

                Drywood Termites as well as other termites dwell in Florida.  Drywood Termites infest dry wood and do not require contact with the soil.  Other types of termites need to nest in the soil in order to survive. 

                Drywood Termites are a social insect that live in colonies.  The colonies are composed of kings, queens and soldiers.  There is no worker caste of termite as in other types of termites. The work or foraging for food is done by the immature termites before they become adults.  These nymphs, the immature termites, which are most numerous castes, are white and wingless.  Kings and Queens Termites perform the reproductive function of the colony.  They are light to dark brown and 1/3 to one inch in length.  The Soldiers guard the colony against invaders such as ants.  They are white and wingless with large brownish heads and jaws.  The soldiers and immature remain inside the wood at all times.

                Drywood Termites are more common along coastal areas, although they are also found inland.  Drywood Termite food consists of cellulose obtained from wood.  Infestations of Drywood Termites may be found in almost any product containing cellulose.  They are most commonly found infesting attics, window sills, door frames, woodwork in buildings and furniture.

                Detecting Drywood Termites infestations may be noticed in several ways.  One way is during the early months of the year.  Drywood Termite Kings and Queens emerge from the colonies as swarms.  The purpose of these swarms is to establish new colonies.  The appearance of winged termites in the home is an indication of probable infestation; however, they may have come in from outside.  Swarming termites are attracted to light.  Swarming termites may be found around window sills or lights.  Shortly after emerging from the colony, swarming termites land and lose their wings.  If the swarming termites do not find a suitable nesting area, they will die.

                A common way to detect Drywood Termites is that Drywood Termites unlike other types of termites excrete pellets of partly digested wood.  These pellets are straw-colored to reddish brown and about the size of sand.  The pellets are pushed from the galleries and found on are surfaces beneath the infested wood.

An experienced eye can detect Drywood Termites in an advanced stage of infestation from surface blistering.  Drywood Termites sometimes tunnel close to the surface giving the wood a blistered appearance. 

                Preventative measures for the Drywood Termite is limited at best.  Any opening to windows and attics should be screened.  Any cracks or voids should be caulked or filled with wood filler.  The use of termite resistant woods such as Redwood, Bald Cypress, Mahogany, Spanish cedar, and commercial pressure treated wood will resist Drywood Termites for several years until weathering makes it susceptible to infestation.

                Drywood Termites require a completely different control method; therefore’ the infestation must be correctly identified first.  If detected in the early stages and damage is localized, a Drywood Termite colony may be controlled by removing and replacing the damaged wood or by the application of a termite labeled insecticide.  If the infestation is too extensive and advanced for local treatment, it will be necessary to tent and fumigate the entire building.  This method can be costly and leaves no residual protection; it is usually the only alternative when many large termite colonies are present.

Since the source of all Head Lice is on the human body, we cannot treat the source of the problem.  But, we can help you resolve the problem quickly, with less effort and in areas you might not consider treating.

            Head Lice are transferred from person to person by direct contact or by several people using the same combs, brushes, or bedding.  Head lice are not found on animals or household pets and are not transmitted from pet to humans.

            Head Lice infestations are normally found on children, but can also be spread to adults. The head louse is not considered to be a serious vector of disease.  The eggs or head lice are usually glued to hairs of the head.  The favorite areas female head lice like your head infest are to glue the eggs near the ears and back of the head. Fe the eggs to the back of ears and infest the back of your head.

The female head lice lay 6 to 7 eggs per day and may lay a total of 50 to 300 eggs during her life.  Under normal conditions the eggs will hatch in 5 to 10 days.  The young lice which hatch from the egg and must feed with 24 hours or they will die.  The nymphs, or baby stage, and adults all have piercing-sucking mouth parts.  Normally a young louse will mature in 3 to 5 weeks to an adult.  This means by the time you realize there is a problem; the problem has been there for a few weeks. People experience little irritation from the louse’s first bites.  After a short time individuals may become sensitized to the bites, and may react with a general allergic reaction. 

            Head Lice should not be solely associated with uncleanliness, since they may be easily transferred from person to person.  Chemicals are available as prescription or non-prescription drugs to control lice.  Shampoos are preferred for control of Head Lice.  Some eggs may survive the first shampooing, it may be necessary to retreat once a week for three weeks to insure complete control.  Once the eggs, called nits, are killed they can be removed by combing them off the hairs with a very fine toothed comb or nitpick.  All clothes should be washed in hot soapy water, temperature greater than 125 degrees, for 10 minutes.  Pillow cases, sheets, and blankets should also be washed to kill the lice and their eggs.  When it is impractical to wash, articles can be put into clothes dryer at temperatures of 125 degrees for 10 to 20 minutes to kill all adult Head Lice and their eggs.

            Because nymphs and adults sometimes fall off the host onto areas such as school lockers, closets, furniture, automobiles, or any active area people frequent. These areas should also be chemically treated with contact sprays to kill off all Head Lice activity before they could contact themselves to another person.  If the Head Louse does not receive a blood meal within 24 hours they will die.

This tropical cockroach usually is not noticed until large numbers have populated an area.  They remain inside cracks and crevices, under leaf litter, and mulch during the day and come out at night to feed upon plants.  Surinam cockroaches are plant feeders and can severely damage plants in greenhouses and atriums.  They also are commonly found in potted plants, planters, and other humid, hot situations outdoors in the Gulf coast states from Florida to Texas.

The Surinam cockroach burrows into the soil to a depth of three to four inches, where they construct a burrow containing nymphs, (adolescents), and females incubating their egg capsules.  These egg capsules produce from 14 to 42 eggs each.  Surinam cockroaches are unique, in that there are NO males of the species found in the United States.  The females reproduce parthenogentically without mating with a male.  Surinam cockroaches are 3/4” to 1” long, are brown in color,  and have a very obvious dark brown to black shield, (the area behind its head), which is called the pronotum.  

To control this insect it is critical to remove harborage areas, such as excessive leaf litter, excessive mulch, unneeded landscape timbers, stones, or other objects close to the foundation of your building.  Residual materials should be applied to foundations, plantings, woodpiles, potted plants, mulch and any infested areas.  Barrier treatments can substantially reduce Surinam cockroach populations around your home.

            The Giant Bufo Marinus Toad is the largest of the frogs and toads found in Florida. The giant toad is not native to the United States.  Known scientifically as Bufo Marinus, the Cane Toad, Giant Toad, or Marine Toad is native to an area extending from Mexico and Central America to the Amazon Basin and was introduced to Florida in 1966 in an attempt to control the population of a type of beetle that was ravaging the sugar cane crops. The toads ignored the cane beetles, but began ravaging everything else in sight instead. They have immense appetites, breed by the zillions, and secrete poisonous gunk that makes them unpalatable to all but a tiny handful of native animals and poisonous to many.

            Giant Toads range in size from 4 - 6 in. (10 - 15.2 cm). Females can weigh up to 3.3 lbs (1.5 kg). Giant Toads are huge brown toads that vary in color between brown and red and may have darker and lighter spots. These Giant Toads breed from June to January, but Giant Toads have been found in breeding condition throughout the year. Females produce 8,000 to 50,000 eggs in a clutch and can breed at least twice a year for 5 years in the wild. Giant Toads normally lay eggs in slow moving freshwater streams, but they can also breed in brackish water. Tadpoles hatch in 48 to 72 hours. Depending on the water temperature and food availability, they can complete their development in 16 to 180 days. Giant Toads can live for at least 15 years in captivity.  The Giant Toad calls are a slow, low-pitched trill that has been compared to the sound of exhaust noise from a distant tractor. The largest males tend to have the deepest voices. 

            The Giant Toads are an exotic species that will eat all types of native frogs and toads. This species is skilled at locating all types of food.  They have even been known to eat pet food.

            When this Giant Toad is threatened or handled, it secretes a highly toxic milky substance from its large glandsat the back of its head, behind the ears. This secretion can burn your eyes, may irritate your skin, and can kill cats and dogs if they ingest the secretion. Symptoms of Giant Toad poisoning in pets include drooling, head-shaking, crying, loss of coordination, and, in more serious cases, convulsions.

            In Florida, Giant Toads can be found associated with urban and agricultural areas. This species breeds in canals, flooded ditches, shallow pools and fish ponds. At night, Giant Toads have been known to congregate around house lights to feed on insects.

            Giant toads are beneficial for the gardener and homeowner in general. They do displace native toads and reptiles and birds if they can catch them. Giant toads are often transported in shipments of fruit and other commodities. Until effective control methods are available like quarantine checks and the stopping of any accidental releases of these toads, there is little or no hope in the control these Giant Toads.

                Sanitation is the cornerstone to effective and long lasting German Roach control.  Accessible water and food material must be eliminated as much as possible.
