FLIES MOTH FLY PEST CONTROL EXTERMINATOR FORT MYERS NAPLES BONITA SPRINGS FLORIDA

MOTH FLYS

An annoying and troublesome pest that concerns numerous homeowners is the moth fly, also commonly known as the drain fly, filter fly, or sewage fly. Moth flies are frequently found indoors on windows, sinks and walls. The source of the fly infestation is generally from sinks and floor drains, or from nearby sewage plants or waste disposal areas. Polluted waters and wet organic materials are preferred breeding areas of the fly.

The adult fly is about one-tenth inch long (about one-third the size of a housefly). It has a dark gray body and lighter colored wings. The body and wings are densely covered with long hairs which give the body a fuzzy or hairy appearance, hence the name “moth fly”.

Eggs are deposited throughout the spring and summer in moist, decomposing organic materials. The gelatinous organic deposits, which accumulate in drains, provide an ideal breeding site. Eggs hatch into the maggots, which feed in this organic matter. Under favorable conditions, maggots mature in about two weeks and form a hard shell (puparium) within which the pupa forms and from which the adult fly emerges.

Control varies with the origin of the moth fly infestation. The most economical and sanitary way is to remove the organic material in which they breed. This requires cleaning sinks, drain pipes, and traps with a stiff wire brush or by steam. Several new products are now available that contain either bacteria or enzymes which breakdown the gelatinous scum in drains. They are applied as either a pour around the drain lip or injected as foam. Most pest management companies provide this as a service. To determine which drain is infested, place a jar over the outlet or tape a plastic bag over the opening of the overflow outlet. Check the container at intervals for adult flies.

TOXIC WHAT IS TOXIC COLLIER PEST CONTROL FORT MYERS NAPLES BONITA SPRINGS FLORIDA

 WHAT IS TOXIC

Today’s modern convinces include many natural and manmade products to give us a higher standard of living.  When purchasing these products, there is a personal responsibility to pick and choose the product that combines proper safety and environmental protection for the usage needed.  Most people are not aware of the level of toxicity a product has when using it.  The general public also is not aware that the government has given us a standard code of toxicity on which each product is measured.  The level of toxicity must be put on the front of the label on any non food product produced.

The level of toxicity each product measures are found on the label of the product in the form of a SIGNAL WORD.  This SIGNAL WORD indicates how potentially dangerous this product is to humans and other animals.  Knowing the product’s level of toxicity can help you choose wisely and take the proper precautionary measures for handling and using the product.

The SIGNAL WORD must appear in large letters on the front panel of the label, immediately following the statement “Keep Out of the Reach of Children”, which also appears on all product labels.

These are the four levels of toxicity and the SIGNAL WORDS for each level.

DANGER      This word signals that the product is highly toxic.  A taste to a teaspoonful of the undiluted product, taken by mouth, could kill an average sized (175 lb.) adult.  Any product which is highly toxic, orally, dermal or through inhalation, or which causes severe eye and skin burning will be labeled  DANGER.

WARNING    This word signals that the product is moderately toxic.  As little as a teaspoon to an ounce of the undiluted product, taken by mouth, could kill an average sized (175 lb.) adult.  Any product which is moderately toxic orally, dermal or through inhalation, or causes moderate eye and skin irritation, will be labeled WARNING.

CAUTION     This word signals that the product is slightly toxic.  An ounce to a pint of the undiluted product, taken by mouth, could kill an average sized (175 lb.) adult.  Any product which is slightly toxic orally, dermal, or through inhalation, or causes slight eye and skin irritation, will be labeled  CAUTION.

NO SIGNAL WORD            The absence of a signal word indicates that the product is almost non toxic, less than lightly toxic.  Much more than a pint of undiluted product, taken by mouth, would be needed to kill an average sized (175 lb.) adult.  This also indicates that the product has little or no toxicity to dermal or inhalation poisoning and does not have much or any eye or skin irritation.

Check your storage closets, and when you shop look at the labels for the toxic level, SIGNAL WORD, for products that meet your safety and needs.  Collier Pest Control uses the most effective materials available, in the caution level or less, when servicing your home or business.  We take your safety and our environment very seriously in choosing products that is why we offer our Enviro-Care Pest Control Service.  This service offers you complete pest control service without any open pesticide spraying.  Only natural products are placed in cracks and crevices to give you comfort and protection.

ROLLIE POLLIE PILL AND SOW BUGS PEST CONTROL EXTERMINATOR FORT MYERS NAPLES BONITA SPRINGS FLORIDA

PILL & SOW BUGS

These occasional land dwelling crustacean invaders from the outside are arthropods and not insects.  They are more closely related to shrimp and crayfish than to insects. The Pill Bug are sometimes called “roly-polies” and get this common name because they roll up into a tight ball when disturbed.  Both are inactive during the day and remain hidden under objects to reduce moisture loss during the day.  They can be found around buildings in such places as under trash, boards, rocks, flower pots, piles of grass clippings, flower-bed mulches, and other decaying vegetation.

They occasionally enter buildings via door thresholds, especially homes with sliding-glass doors on the ground level.  Indoor invasion typically means that there is a large population immediately outside the building.  Indoors both will not survive for more than a couple of days unless there are high moisture conditions and a food supply present.

Pill and Sow bugs are scavenger and feed on decaying organic matter, usually plant material but occasionally animal, very similar to millipedes.  They cause not damage and are considered a nuisance pest indoors.  Outdoors they occasionally injure young plants.

The key to controlling or eliminating Pill or Sow Bugs from your environment is to reduce or eliminate the moist areas which make their survival possible.  Removal of piles of grass clippings and leaves, store boxes, lumber, firewood, and flower pots of the ground, and provide adequate ventilation in crawl spaces.  An appropriate labeled residual pesticide can be applied to the foundation and walls of buildings, perimeter flower and plant beds, unfinished basements, and crawl spaces.

Collier Pest Control, Southwest Florida’s Pest Authority, can manage Pill and Sow Bugs and most of Florida’s problem pests.  If you live in Naples, Fort Myers, or anywhere in Southwest Florida call 239-455-4300 for a free explanation on any of our services or look us up on our web site at collierpestcontrol.com.  Remember Florida does not have to be shared with insects.

ANTS BIG HEAD ANTS LAWN TREATMENT PEST CONTROL EXTERMINATOR FORT MYERS NAPLES BONITA SPRINGS FLORIDA

BIG HEAD ANTS

LAWN TREATMENTS

The Big Headed Ant is a very successful invasive species that is sometimes considered a danger to native ants and has been nominated as one of the 100 "World's Worst" invaders.  Big Head Ants has been a pest in southern Florida for many years, and according to reports by pest control operators, it is becoming an even more pervasive nuisance as it displaces other ants.  Big Head Ants can be found nesting in disturbed soils, lawns, flowerbeds, under objects, such as bricks, cement slabs, flower pots, around trees or water pipes, along the base of structures, and walkways, where displaced soil is usually observed from the action of ants digging below the surface.  It is possible that the increase in Big Head Ant infestations was augmented by several years of excessive hurricane activity in Florida that damaged lawns and killed trees which necessitated the use of increased amounts of sod and other replacement vegetation that may have been infested with this ant. The Big Head Ant does not sting or cause any structural damage, and usually does not bite unless the nest is disturbed, and even then, the bite is not painful.

Big Head Ants are a soil-nesting ant that leaves piles of loose sandy soil. Homeowners are annoyed by these "dirt piles" and by ants foraging in bathrooms, kitchens, around doors, and windows, as well as on exterior paved or brick walkways or driveways. Control of Big Head Ants is difficult because the ant colonies are numerous and populations usually extend across property lines. The Big Head Ant receives its common name from the large-sized head of the major worker, or "soldier." Minor workers are small reddish brown ants.

Collier Pest Control Southwest Florida’s Pest Authority has developed a successful 3 step treatment method to eliminate and control Big Head Ants.  We will treat your lawn with growth regulator materials to eliminate the development of queens producing new ants and stop the development of the larva stage (the baby ants) from growing up into adult Big Head Ants. With the addition of interior ant baiting, this 3 step lawn treatment will eliminate Big Head Ants quickly and is guaranteed for a full 90 days.

Collier Pest Control can continue to keep the Big Head Ants away with a quarterly Big Head Ant Lawn Maintenance program and stop all unwanted Big Head Ants from moving back into your home and lawn.

If you live in Naples, Bonita Springs, Fort Myers, or anywhere in beautiful Southwest Florida call 239-455-4300 Collier Pest Control for a full explanation on our exclusive Big Head Ant Lawn Treatments or on any of our services.  All our services and most of Florida’s problem pests are also on our web site at collierpestcontrol.com.  Remember Florida does not have to be shared with insects.

TERMITE YEARLY INSPECTIONS WHY HAVE ONE PEST CONTROL EXTERMINATOR FORT MYERS BONITA SPRINGS NAPLES FLORIDA

WHY YOU SHOULD HAVE A YEARLY

FREE TERMITE INSPECTION

HERE’S WHY!

  • ONE IN THREE HOMES THAT SHOW NO SIGNS OF TERMITES HAVE                  ACTIVITY WITHIN TWO FEET OF THE FOUNDATION!
  • TWO OF THREE HOMES BUILT SINCE 1987 WILL HAVE A TERMITE                   INFESTATION WITHIN FIVE YEARS
  • IN MULTIPLE BUILDING SITUATIONS, EVERY BUILDING WAS BUILT THE SAME, USING THE SAME TECHNIQUES AND MATERIALS.  WHEN TERMITE PROTECTION FAILS IN ONE BUILDING, IT IS ONLY A MATTER OF TIME BEFORE THE REST WILLFAIL ALSO.

How can you tell if you have a termite problem?    It is very difficult.  Termites, by their very nature, remain hidden.  They avoid open areas and remain buried deep in the wood that they are eating.  Often, they are noticed only AFTER damage has been done to the structure.

An important point to remember is that subterranean termites work slowly. There are many, many variables when considering how fast or slow a termite’s colony will damage a home.  Size of the colony, temperature, moisture, time of year, etc all affect the speed of damage.  A small colony can typically eat six inches of a 2X4 in one year.

If you have regular routine yearly termite inspections of your home or business, you can find out if you have a termite problem or not.  Since they eat very slowly, even if they have entered your home or business you can correct the problem before they cause an extensive costly amount of damage.

Collier Pest Control now offers a diagnostic tool to help answer the question, “Do we have a termite problem?” We will install at NO CHARGE, to any of our regular Collier Complete General Household Treatment customers, 8-10 termite monitors around each building.  In 90 days, we will check each monitor, and report to you the location of any monitors that have termite activity.  This will help show you, if and where you may have termite activity close to your foundation making your home a high risk account.

This helpful tool is available to you at Collier Pest Control!  If you live in Naples, Fort Myers, or Southwest Florida call to schedule a FREE termite inspection of your home or business.  More information on Termites or any of our unwanted Florida problem pest can be found on our web site at collierpestcontrol.com. Don’t let unwanted guest spoil your beautiful Southwest Florida lifestyle.  Remember, Florida does not have to be shared with insects!

MORE TERMITE INFORMATION:

The control of subterranean termites is often a major expense and like any other household expense should be carefully considered. As you have read above that termite’s eat very slowly.  Do not rush into an agreement with any firm before you thoroughly investigate what is offered.  Subterranean Termites, as the name suggests, live in the soil, in most cases.  In some cases, when there is adequate moisture available within the home, they will “nest” in the home and not return to the colony located in the soil. The subterranean termite is an important part of our environment.  In a natural setting, this termite recycles dead trees back into the soil. Without the termite, our forests would be littered with dead trees as wood “rot” cannot keep up.  No one has been able to convince the termite that “dead” wood in your home should not be eaten.  The termite sees the wood in your home as just another food source.  The main portion of the colony stays in the ground and the workers, (cream colored & wingless), come into the home through “mud” tubes or cracks in the concrete as small as 1/64 of an inch.  Once inside, they will eat the wood and bring it back to their nest mates in the ground.

During the spring of each year, the termites produce a winged alate (Swarmers).  The purpose of the swarmers is to fly up into the air, find the opposite sex, mate, and start new colonies.   Both the male and the female break off their wings and look for a suitable nesting area.  In the forest, this would be a dead, damp decaying tree on the forest floor.  When they swarm into the home, in most cases, they cannot damage the home, or start a nest as the area is much too dry. So unless you have a wet, rotten log in your living room, the alates cannot hurt you.   Our experience has shown that there are normally three swarms.  The first swarm is the major one, the second swarm is often 1/10th in size, and the last swarm is normally just a few insects.  Subterranean termites normally avoid light.  When swarmers are created by the colony, the opposite happens.  The swarmers are attracted to light when they emerge, and are often found in window sills.   As they come out in large numbers, they can be an awful nuisance.  Try not to spray them with common household insecticides, as these products contain oils that can stain and make a mess.  The easiest way to remove these alates is to vacuum them up.  They will die shortly in the dry environment of the vacuum bag.  Often, these swarmers will emerge within 30-60- days AFTER A HOME HAS BEEN TREATED. This is a defensive measure by the colony.  The colony is under stress from the treatment and will often respond by sending the remaining swarmers out.

This helpful information is available to you from Collier Pest Control!  If you live in Naples, Fort Myers, or Southwest Florida call to schedule a FREE termite inspection of your home or business.  More information on Termites or any of our unwanted Florida problem pest can be found on our web site at collierpestcontrol.com. LIZARDS NILE MONITOR LIZARDS PEST CONTROL EXTERMINATOR FORT MYERS NAPLES BONITA SPRINGS FLORIDA

NILE MONITOR LIZARDS

Florida and Southwest Florida is known for its beaches, golf courses, and now Monitor Lizards.  These giant carnivorous lizards, native to Africa can grow up to 9 feet in length and up to 40 pounds. These slender body lizards are tan to brown with bands of tan spots on the sides and back, interspersed with darker speckles. Their tails can deliver a powerful whipping blow that can kill most pets.  They possess sharp claws used for climbing, digging, defense, or tearing at their prey. Monitors have strong legs and powerful jaws have been established in Florida since 1990.  Large numbers have been seen in Cape Coral, Pine Island, and Sanibel Island, believed to be released from irresponsible pet owners that escaped when it became too troublesome to care for them. No one is allowed to own a Monitor Lizard without a permit in the State of Florida.

No one has been bitten yet, but state experts say that the Monitor Lizards do pose a threat. The Monitor Lizard is cousin to the voracious Komodo Dragon Lizard and is aggressive to people too. Monitors are running amok in a fragile nature preserve that threatens not only humans but the native fauna comprising of mostly insects, amphibians, retiles, rodents, fish, spiders, snakes, rabbits, birds, turtle nests, including borrowing owls, which have been documented to have been killed by Monitors. Known to hunt in packs, they eat anything they can catch or whatever they can fit in their mouths.  The Monitors are great swimmers with their strong tails and can hold their breath under water for up to an hour and have been clocked on land of speeds up to 15 mph.  If they could fly they would be the ultimate predator.

Cape Coral locals have reported a decline in number of feral cats, and fear for their pet’s safety.  Sanibel’s City manager put up wanted posters of the lizard’s mug shot on a website and cautioned that no “infant humans” be left alone, being very concerned.  Major effort by the Sanibel and Cape Coral officials are being made to eradicate this exotic lizard before it becomes too numerous and cannot be totally eliminated.  One of the biggest fears by officials is that they will spread south.  Trapping has proved tough to wrangle into submission.  They hurl themselves at cage bars, spitting, lashing their tails, and emitting a pungent spray.  They even when cornered, rear up on their hind legs and hiss before attacking or escaping.

Local authorities request that if anyone witnesses a Nile Monitor Lizard they report it to the police.  Funding has run out to trap these lizards.  Local officials are asking all residence to help in catching, trapping, or reporting these invasive pests.

ANTS WHITE FOOT ANTS PEST CONTROL EXTERMINATOR FORT MYERS NAPLES BONITA SPRINGS FLORIDA

WHITE FOOT ANTS

The White Footed ant is native to tropical Asia, but has been inadvertently introduce into South Florida.  The White Footed Ant arrived in the Homestead are of Florida in 1986, followed by rapidly spreading up and out expanding throughout the rest of South Florida.

The White Footed Ants are relatively small ants with a black body and yellowish-white feet, called tibia and tarsi.  These ants do not bite or sting, nor have they been reported to cause any type of structural damage.  They are just a nuisance ant attracted to sweet foods.  Thus, it is common to find them foraging indoors around kitchens and bathrooms, and outside on hedges infested with honeydew producing insects, such as aphid and scales.

White Footed Ants in Southwest Florida for many pest control companies, have been extremely difficult to control because of several characteristics of their biology.  One big problem is that they establish colonies of well over a million ants, over half being worker ants.  Workers ants are sterile females that are responsible for foraging for food and caring for the nest.  Another problem is that food ingested by the worker ants is never shared back in the colony, as like most every other type of ant.  These sterile worker ants are capable of laying unfertilized eggs.  These Thinner more fragile non fertile eggs are what the worker ants, larva, and queens in the colony use as their food source, therefore, any toxic bait to kill off ants never reach the ants in a White Foot Ant colony, and only affect the foraging worker ants that eat the insect killing baits.

While White Foote Ants are not directly harmful to humans or pets, their presence within the home is a nuisance. Collier Pest Control, Southwest Florida’s Pest Authority, has developed a 3-step 6-week treatment method to eliminate unwanted White Foote Ants from you home and property.  Collier Pest Control will first use insect killing baits inside you home and attic to eliminate any activity being seen inside your home.  Then we will treat the immediate sides of your home with special insect killing materials to kill any trailing White Foot Ant attempting to enter your home.  The 3-stage of this treatment method is to use special insect killing materials up to 30 or 40 feet around your home, killing off all activity trailing toward your home.  Collier Pest Control will follow up with a service treatment each week for 5 more weeks insuring that no White Foot Ants are infested or entering your home.

If you have been run out of your home by unwanted White Foot Ants and live in Naples, Fort Myers, or Southwest Florida call, 239-455-4300, Collier Pest Control for a complete explanation and free estimate on any of our services, or look us up on our web site at collierpestcontrol.com.  Don’t let insect spoil your beautiful Southwest Florida lifestyle.  Remember, Florida doesn’t have to be shared with insects.

WHITE FLY RUGOSE SPIRALING WHITEFLY TREATMENT PEST CONTROL EXTERMINATOR FORT MYERS NAPLES BONITA SPRINGS FLORIDA

Rugose Spiraling Whitefly

The Rugose Spiraling Whitefly originated in Central America.  This is not the same whitefly that is currently causing defoliation and branch dieback of ficus in South Florida.  These whiteflies are small winged insects.  They typically feed on the underside of leaves with their needle-like mouthparts.  Whiteflies can seriously injure host plants by sucking nutrients from the plant causing wilting, yellowing, stunting, leaf drop, or even death.

The Rugose Spiraling Whitefly has a very broad host range from palms to woody ornamentals and fruits.  It has been seen on gumbo limbo, black olive, copperleaf, broadleaf arrowhead, Brazilian pepper, wax myrtle, live oak, mango, and several palms.

The adults congregate on the undersides of the leaves to feed and reproduce.  The female lays here eggs in a spiral pattern on the leaves and also deposits a white, waxy substance on the eggs.  The crawler stage hatches from the eggs and crawls around before it starts to feed with its “needle-like” mouthparts.  This stage is very small and difficult to see.

The most noticeable symptoms of an infestation of this whitefly is the abundance of white, waxy material covering the leaves and also excessive black sooty mold.  The actual effect of an infestation of Rugose Spiraling Whitefly on the health of a plant is unknown; however, whiteflies in general can cause plant decline, defoliation and branch dieback.

Monitor plants for early signs of an infestation.  Small potted plants can be washed off with water.  Larger plants can be controlled with horticultural oil or insecticidal soap or most likely will need an insecticide spraying and root drenching by a professional lawn pest control company to control these whiteflies.  They will use a systemic insecticide product that can be applied directly to the infested plant or the soil.

Collier Pest Control, Southwest Florida’s Pest Authority, will treat each infected tree with the appropriate materials by root feeding and by direct contact.  These materials will protect each tree for a period of 6 months after application.

If you suspect a problem with the Rugose Spiraling Whitefly or any other insect call our office, 239-455-4300, for a complete explanation on any of our services, or look us up on our web site at collierpestcontrol.com Remember Florida does not have to be shared with insects.

FLIES FUMPBACK FLY PEST CONTROL EXTERMINATOR FORT MYERS NAPLES BONITA SPRINGS FLORIDA

HUMPBACK FLIES

ALSO KNOWN AS PHORID FLIES, FILTH FLY, SEWER FLY, DRAIN FLY, VINEGAR FLIES

We’ve all seen them, those pesky gnat type flies that hover over you food or drinks in a restaurant or sports bar.  Most likely this is the pest that is bothering you.  This fly gets its name from the humpbacked profile when viewed from the side.

Adult humpback flies can be found in unsanitary places.  They can transport various disease-causing organisms to food materials.  They can even be found in human corpses in morgues, mortuaries, and mausoleums. This fly is a great concern in health-care facilities because of their unsanitary habits, and because larvae have been found in open wounds of patients.

The larvae breed in a wide variety of moist decaying organic matter which includes dung, fungi, and decaying plant material.  In offices, overwatered potted plants are often the source.  They also have been found in unusual places including a tin of boot polish, a pot of glue paint, and a bucket of animal-based glue.

The key to eliminating Humpback Flies is to find their breeding sources, all of them, and removing the organic material in drains, under refrigeration equipment, remove slabs for broken pipes under slabs and repair, residual pesticides are rarely if ever required for the control of phorid flies (humpback flies), but after breeding sources have been removed, a non residual pesticide can be used to kill the adults present.

If you’re finding small flies being a nuisance in your kitchen, bath, or your restaurant you most likely have Humpback Flies (Phorid Flies). Don’t be annoyed anymore; call, 239-454-4300, Collier Pest Control, Southwest Florida’s Pest Authority including Naples, Fort Myers, for a complete explanation on any of our services. BED BUGS LANDLORDS BEWARE YOUR RESPONSIBLE PEST CONTROL EXTERMINATOR FORT MYERS NAPLES BONITA SPRINGS FLORIDA

LANDLORDS BEWARE

BED BUGS ARE YOUR RESPONSIBILTY

According to the Florida State Statutes, you as the landlord are responsible for the extermination of insects in your rental dwelling including bed bugs.  The law clearly intends that a landlord is responsible to maintain a safe and healthy residence for tenants.  In Florida, the Florida Statutes Chapter 83.51 maintains that “unless otherwise agreed in writing….the landlord of a dwelling unit….shall at all times, during the tenancy, make reasonable provisions for 1) the extermination of …..bed bugs.  The tenant shall be required to temporarily vacate the premises for a period of time not to exceed four days, on seven days’ written notice, if necessary….”

However, the law does state that the rental agreement can be modified to transfer the responsibility for bed bug control to the tenant.  Because of the cost of bed bug treatments, many leases now transfer the cost of bed bug treatment to the tenant.  Tenants are usually cash-strapped and cannot afford bed bug treatments, so the bed bug problem will escalate and become intense.

From the tenant’s perspective, an infestation of bed bugs may have spread from surrounding infested apartments.  Then tenants believe the landlord should have the money from rents paid to pay for treatments.

From the landlord’s perspective tenants fail to cooperate with treatments and often reintroduce bed bugs after they have been eliminated.  Of course, it is difficult for a landlord to tell whether bed bugs were re-introduced or not controlled with the treatments.

So, the debate continues.  Who should pay for a bed bug infestation in a rental dwelling?  Unless you spell out in your lease to your tenant, you are responsible for all insect control in your rental units according to the Florida Statutes.  This information is for you to be informed and to protect yourself against the rising costs of bed bug treatments.  We have been involved with the Health Department in a few rental disputes on who was responsible for the bed bug treatment and control.  The landlord has been told in those cases that they are responsible and has to arrange and pay for the bed bug treatment.

Call, 239-455-4300, for a complete explanation of all the different types of bed bug treatments or any of our services, or look us up on our web site at collierpestcontrol.com.  Remember Florida does not need to be shared with insects.

ROACHES CUBAN COCKROACH PEST CONTROL EXTERMINATOR FORT MYERS NAPLES BONITA SPRINGS FLORIDA

CUBAN COCKROACH

This cockroach's common name comes from the country where it was originally collected.  It found it's way here in bunches of bananas and tobacco.  It is only found in Florida, along the Gulf Coast in Louisiana and Texas; it is widely distributed in Mexico, central America and northern South America.

This outdoor species unique green coloring is a give away to the type of cockroach it is, which only survives in tropical and subtropical area.  It is attracted to lights at night and only becomes a nuisance pest when it enters structures via open doors and where ever light shines through to the outside.

Reducing outdoor lighting and interior lighting shining through to the outside will slow this nuisance pest from entering a structure.  Closing exterior cracks and voids such as caulking thresholds, windows, door weather stripping, and repairing screens will help stop this green invader from entering.

BROWN PATCH

LAWN FUNGUS

BROWN PATCH FUNGUS:  This turf grass disease is most common in mid to late summer when there are extended periods with high humidity and temperatures.  Brown patch can be found in all of the cool season turfgrasses found in the U.S.

Brown patch symptoms differ depending on the various maintenance practices performed on the turf grass (mowing height, fertilizer, watering, etc.  Symptoms on turfgrasses that are wet for extended periods and are closed mowed will produce a distinctive gray-purplish bordered ring “smoke-ring” that is up to 50 cm in diameter.  While on taller cut grasses that are not wet for extended periods of time will begin to produce patches that can be several feet in diameter and may have a “frogeye” appearance.  On a closer look at the grass leaf blades you may be able to see tan to brown small, irregular shaped lesions.

Collier Pest Control does not offer monthly or other scheduled turf maintenance programs.  Collier Pest Control does offer one time correction treatments for fungi and other turf damaging problems. ANTS FLORICOLA ANT PEST CONTROL EXTERMINATOR FORT MYERS NAPLES BONITA SPRINGS FLORIDA

FLORICOLA ANT

(ALSO KNOWN AS A BICOLORED TRAILING ANT)

Sometimes called the Flower Ant, the Floricola Ant is found in tropical and sub-tropical regions.  This small and slender ant is widely known to attack other insect eggs, including butterflies.  The Floricola Ant can be distinguished by their distinctive bi-colored body, with a pale thorax and darker brown head and gaster, and a clubbed 3 segmented antenna and 2 nodes between their thorax and their gaster.

The Floricola is primarily forming large colonies in bushes, dry stems of grasses, and trees as well as in small voids or cracks in homes to varying degrees.  They are a common urban pest in most tropical countries.

The Floricola lives on living and dead insects.   Sucking the sap from insects and collecting honeydew off plants, giving them the generic name as the flower ant.

ANTS CRAZY ANTS PEST CONTROL EXTERMINATOR FORT MYERS NAPLES BONITA SPRINGS FLORIDA

CRAZY ANTS

Ants can be a nuisance here in Southwest Florida and one of the most persistent pest problems is the Crazy Ant.  This is a small brown to black ant about 1/10th inch long with a tremendous amount of energy.  The Crazy Ant got named from the habit of running about very erratically with no apparent sense of direction.  They are sometimes recognized by their extremely long legs and antennae out of proportion to the other parts of their body.  This unusual feature is a good identifying characteristic.

The Crazy Ant is found in the ground, dead logs, fence posts, hollow trees, mulch, potted plants, small cracks, crevices and voids inside structures, and wanders throughout the building searching for food.  The Crazy ant is very adaptable of nesting habits.  They will nest in both moist and relatively dry environments.  They prefer to feed on animal mater, grease and other insects, but will readily eat sweets, of all kinds.  The workers will forage up to 100 feet or more from the colony in search of food.

Each colony contains numerous queens.  The Crazy Ant colony is very mobile and will move from one site to a new site if conditions become unfavorable.  New colonies are produced by budding or splitting apart.  Budding occurs when one or more queens and a group of workers split away from the original colony to form a new colony.

Treating or controlling Crazy Ants consists of three steps.  First, is to correct any condition contributing to the infestation, such as excess moisture. Then, is locating and treating existing colonies, using baits and spray insecticides.  Finally, is to establish barriers of residual insecticide around the structure to try to prevent new Crazy Ants from entering the building.

Patience will normally results in success.  Locations of the colonies are important, but if they cannot be found, baiting and a perimeter treatment will give a temporary relief of the problem.  Your cooperation in locating the colonies is a key element to the success of this treatment.

If you live in Naples, Fort Myers, or Southwest Florida call Collier Pest Control, Southwest Florida’s Pest Authority, for a free estimate and a complete explanation on any of our services. ANT SWARMERS OR TERMITES PEST CONTROL EXTERMINATOR FORT MYERS NAPLES BONITA SPRINGS FLORIDA

ANT SWARMERS

WINGED FLYING ANTS

When insects produce a swarm, also known as a reproductive flight, it is part of the seasonal activity of certain social insects, most importantly termites and ants. Normally insect swarms occur outdoors on a still, warm day. But if an ant or termite nest is close enough to a home, swarms may occur indoors.

All species of ants are capable of producing swarmers. The conditions have to be just right for this to be accomplished. Winged ants are visible and easy to notice, but they are harmless. They are not the individuals that did the work of creating mounds in your lawn, dirt piles on your driveway or sawdust at the base of your hollow tree. Swarming is a temporary, natural event and is not a permanent or major problem.  Winged swarmers are sexually developed, male and female ants that serve as emissaries from a healthy, well-established colony.  They have very, very slim chances of success. Most will die of starvation, dehydration or will be eaten by birds, dragonflies or other predators. Though almost all will fail, just enough succeed to spread the species and ensure its survival.  An interesting thing about swarming is that it typically occurs simultaneously among colonies in the same area.  With no direct communication between different colonies, ants and termites seem to know when other colonies of the same species are going to send out potential mates, and time their swarms accordingly.  Swarming is often triggered by one or more environmental clues such as temperature, wind speed, relative humidity and day length. Fire ants, for example, send out swarmers in the spring when the relative humidity is high and the wind speed is low. When you find numerous swarming ants inside your home, it means there is an ant nest either inside, underneath or very close to the structure. In most cases, if worker ants have not previously been a problem inside the home, the presence of swarming ants indoors should not be a cause for concern. Swarming typically lasts for only one day. This, and the fact that reproductive flights only occur once to a few times a year, means that a vacuum cleaner, or one-time use of an indoor flying insect spray, is often all that is needed to solve the problem. If you see no other evidence of ants other than occasional swarmers, then no further control may be needed.  On the other hand, swarming ants may be evidence of an undesirable infestation.  Outdoors, ignore swarmers if possible. Indoors, winged ants may be a nuisance or annoyance if they have emerged in the house or wandered in by mistake. There is little justification for treating winged ants beyond sweeping or vacuuming them up for disposal.

DISTINGWISHING ANTS FROM TERMITES

This ant swarmer is identified by its pinched waist and bumpy stem connecting the thorax and tail (gaster).

If you see no other evidence of ants other than occasional swarmers, then no further control may be needed.  On the other hand, swarming ants may be evidence of an undesirable infestation. Having termites swarm in your home is an almost sure indication of a termite infestation. Unless it’s apparent that the termite entered through an outdoor window, you should contact a termite control professional. Save any specimens you discover for a professional to examine. If you find your home infested it is best to work with a professional termite or pest control company to eliminate the problem.

Ant swarmers are distinguished from termites by their pinched waists and elbowed antennae. Swarmers may or may not have wings.

Termites are recognized by their dark, straight sided bodies and long, equal-length wings. Ant swarmers have distinctly pinched waists (the joint between thorax and abdomen) and the four wings are unequal in length (two long and two relatively short). Ant antennae also bend sharply in the middle, whereas termite antennae are straight and flexible throughout their length and look beaded.

WHITE FLIES FICUS WHITE FLY PEST CONTROL EXTERMINATOR FORT MYERS NAPLES BONITA SPRINGS FLORIDA

FIG WHITEFLIES

DON’T LET FICUS FLIES DAMAGE YOUR HEDGES OR TREES

If you see your Ficus Trees or Hedge suddenly loosing its leaves or turning brown and tiny white, gnat-like, adult whiteflies fly from the foliage.  DON’T WAIT contact us quickly!  You may have the Fig White Fly attacking your Ficus.  They can defoliate your trees and hedges very quickly.  Although your ficus tree or hedge may appear to be dying after losing a lot of leaves, it may not be a goner.  If the twigs are still flexible, it may refoliate in a few weeks.  Very Important:  if you find an infestation do not pt pruning clippers in the yard waste, trash pick-up.  Don’t spread the flies to other areas of our neighborhood.  Keep the clippings in a garbage bag or in compose piles to kill the flies.

These Fig White Flies are hard to see compared to other species of whiteflies.  The body of the adult Fig Whitefly is yellow in color and the wings are white with a faint grey band towards the middle of the wing and a grey longitudinal bar on the inside of the back edge of each  of the front wings.

Ficus hedges and trees are not native to South Florida and these Fig White Flies are quickly spreading northward from Homestead since 2007.  Fortunately, these flies can be controlled.  First, you have to determine if you already have Fig Whitefly.  If not, keep monitoring your trees and hedges for early signs of an infestation, such as; leaves falling off or small gnat-like flies emerging from the foliage.

If you find signs of the Fig White Fly or wish to prevent the fly from damaging your hedges or trees, call Collier Pest Control today for a free inspection or set up treatment.  Yes, we can eliminate unwanted Fig Whiteflies from your foliage or prevent them from damaging them with our Fig White Fly Treatments.  Collier Pest Control not only will kill off all Fig White Flies on the hedges and tree but will put a special material in the soil and on the plant.  This material will absorb into the plant and any new Fig Whitefly will be killed from just biting into the plant for moisture.

Collier Pest Control offers this one time correction treatments for the Fig Whitefly. ROACHES GERMAN COCKROACHES PEST CONTROL EXTERMINATOR FORT MYERS NAPLES BONITA SPRINGS FLORIDA

GERMAN ROACHES

Collier Pest Control is your Southwest Florida Pest Authority including the German Cockroaches.   The German Roach is the most common household insect pest found in the United States.  They are usually found infesting in food preparation areas, kitchens, and bathrooms.   In severe infestations, they have the capability of living in any portion of a heated structure.  They favor warm, humid atmospheres where temperatures are around 70 to 75 degrees.  The German Roach is most active at night and hides in secluded areas such as cupboards, behind cabinets, wall voids, and motor housings of appliances.

The adult German Roach is about ½ inch long, brown, and has two dark longitudinal bands or streaks on the top the thorax (just behind the head).   German Roaches are regularly carried from place to place in such things as bagged potatoes, onion bags, beverage cartons, grocery bags, handbags, and in the folds of clothing.

The German Roach has the highest reproductive potential of all common pest cockroaches.  Female German Roaches produce about 30 to 50 eggs at a time.  The eggs are contained in a capsule with is attached to the tip of the abdomen and carried throughout most of the incubation period.  The eggs hatch in about 28 days at room temperature, and reach maturity in 40 to 125 days.  Adult female German Roaches live about 200 days producing 6 to 8 egg capsules or 180 to 400 eggs.

Sanitation is the cornerstone to effective and long lasting German Roach control.  Accessible water and food material must be eliminated as much as possible. Hiding, harborage areas need to be sealed off where possible.  Remove hiding areas like open trashcans, old newspapers, rag piles, unused grocery bags, unused boxes, excess grease and food around appliances, and any place a roach could hide or eat.

Collier Pest Control can control regular infestations of German Roaches with our “Collier Complete” pest control service.  If the infestation is severe, we must apply our thorough German Roach Treatment to all parts of your home.  Both services treat the cracks and crevices inside your home as well as the perimeter, mulch beds, soffits, eaves, and entryways outside effectively and quickly.

RODENTS ROOF RATS PEST CONTROL EXTERMINATOR FORT MYERS NAPLES BONITA SPRINGS FLORIDA

RODENTS

ROOF RATS AND MICE

Collier Pest Control is Southwest Florida’s Pest Authority, Including Rodent Control!

The Roof Rat is an introduced species of rat native to southern Asia.  It was brought to America on the first ships to reach the New World and has spread around the world.  This rat is the same species that carried the bubonic plague around the world and is also the reservoir host for murine typhus.  Roof Rats are the worst rodent pest in the State of Florida and most abundant.  A typical roof rat is between 13 and 18 inches long from nose to tail.  It is commonly known as the black rat or palm squirrel, but is often dark brown in color.  Unlike other rats, their tails are longer than the length of their bodies and they have large ears.  Roof rats will nest in trees, woodpiles, garbage and plants, but they generally like inside high places, like attics.  They are good climbers and only need a hole the size of a quarter to gain entry.  They primarily consume fruits and nuts, although they will eat anything.  They tend to hoard food for consuming later.  They are known for hollowing out citrus fruit in trees.  Control of roof rats is not an easy task.  Professional Pest Management is needed to control these pests.  The tools of a Professional Pest Control Technician includes; the knowledge of cultural control (prevention and habitat management): Physical control (trapping and exclusion): Biological control (predators like snakes): and if needed chemical control (rodent baits and repellents).

The Florida House Mouse weighs less than an ounce.  It can fit in a crack of only a quarter inch.  They can and do get everywhere.  If your house has food and has any small openings, eventually mice will find their way in.  A single mouse can’t eat a whole lot, but they nibble on many foods and defecate on everything, mice destroy considerably more food than they consume.  They can also spread diseases.  Some examples of diseases that can be spread by mice or rats are salmonellosis (food poisoning), rickett-sialpox, and lymphocytic choriomeningitis. Mice may also carry leptospirosis, ratbite fever, tapeworms, and organisms that can cause ringworm (a fungal skin disease) in humans.  They like to chew and gnaw everything, and will often chew on electrical wires, creating a fire hazard.

Collier Pest Control can eliminate unwanted rodent infestations, with our exclusive Rodent Treatment.  We will place control trapping equipment in all active areas on the interior of your home or building and set up exterior rodent control baiting stations around the outside of your home or building.  We then will monitor and remove any trapped rodents every other day until there is no more rodents active inside your home or building.  Permanent Exterior Rodent Baiting Stations are available for an extra onetime fee.

Collier Pest Control has the knowledge, experience, and a highly trained staff to be able to control and protect you from Florida’s rodent problems.  If you live in Naples, Fort Myers, or Bonita Springs, or anywhere in beautiful Southwest Florida call 239-455-4300, Collier Pest Control for a full explanation on any of our services, or look us up on our web site at collierpestcontrol.com.  Remember Florida does not have to be shared with pests.

LAWN DAMAGE SOD WEB WORM DAMAGE PEST CONTROL EXTERMINATOR FORT MYERS NAPLES BONITA SPRINGS FLORIDA

SOD WEB WORMS

If you are seeing small white or dingy brown moths fling out of your lawn, or your lawn has developed grayish brown damaged areas 2 or 3 foot in diameter.  It is a good chance you may have Sod Web Worms.  Often, damage is first noticed along hedges or flower beds.

This is the most common caterpillar to attacking turfgrasses.  These moths attack all grasses but prefer Bermuda and least desire bahia.  During the day, the moths rest in shrubbery next to turf areas and at dusk, fly over the turf depositing eggs.  When these eggs hatch into larva, they do their damage on the turf, rasping the surface or skeletonize the blades.   As the larva mature, injured grass has notches are chewed along the sides of the blades or is eaten back evenly.  Damaged areas of your lawn become larger and fuse together.  Sod Web Worms are usually not a problem until June here in Beautiful Southwest Florida.

Don’t what and see if your problem goes away and you lose your beautiful lawn to this tropical partier.  Let Collier Pest Control, Southwest Florida’s Pest Authority, treat your lawn and eliminate those unwanted worms in just 2 visits, 7 to 10 days apart your Sod Web Worms will be gone.  If you live in Naples, Fort Myers, or anywhere in Southwest Florida call 239-455-4300 for a complete explanation on our Sod Web Worm treatment or any of our services, or look us up on line at collierpestcontrol.com.  Remember, Florida does not have to be shared with insects.

FLIES HOUSE FLY PEST CONTROL EXTERMINATOR FORT MYERS NAPLES BONITA SPRINGS FLORIDA

 HOUSE FLY

Collier Pest Control is Southwest Florida’s Pest Authority, including the common House Fly.  The House Fly is of the most common of all insects.  It is worldwide in distribution and is a pest in homes, barns, and poultry houses, food processing plants, dairies, and recreation areas. The House Fly has a tremendous breeding potential all year in Florida and can produce a generation in less than 2 weeks. House Fly eggs can be laid in almost any type of warm organic material, such as fermenting vegetation, manure, or garbage. House Fly eggs hatch within 24 hours into tiny larva called maggots. In 3 to 6 day these maggots migrate to drier areas and cocoon themselves just like a butterfly.  A House Fly can complete its life cycle, (egg, larva, pupa, and adult) in Florida in 6 to 10 days, living a life span of about 30 days.

House Flies digest their food outside their bodies. They excrete a fluid on their food to digest it and then draw this fluid, with the digested food, up through their sponging sucking mouth part.  This is why House Flies can vector or spread diseases such as dysentery and diarrhea.  Flies can be a problem here in Southwest Florida all year round, but the strongest activity is from May through July.

Collier Pest Control has many ways to help you combat flies and their annoying problems.  We have put together some items that can offer help with continuing fly problems.  First, try to eliminate excess food sources such as open garbage cans, unused pet food, excess pet excrement, open drain covers, broken sprinkler heads, unclean mops and brooms.   Eliminate any item a fly could use as food.  Second, repair or correct all openings to your home or business a fly could enter such as broken screens, open doors, non sealing weather stripping, and open construction cracks in the building.  Finally, Collier Pest Control can assist you in mechanical fly control.  We can provide you with fly bait for quick easy control, electronic fly traps for inside or outside control, thorough broadcast treatment of insect controlling materials to help give you a quick control, and expert assistance from manufacturers, distributors, and educators.

If you live in Naples, Fort Myers, or Southwest Florida call Collier Pest Control for a free estimate and a complete explanation on any of our services.  Don’t let unwanted guests spoil your beautiful Southwest Florida lifestyle.  Remember, Florida does not have to be shared with insects!

WHITE FLY SPIRALING WHITE FLY ON PALM TREES PEST CONTROL EXTERMINATOR NAPLES BONITA SPRINGS FORT MYERS FLORIDA

ANT CARPENTER ANTS PEST CONTROL EXTERMINATOR NAPLES BONITA SPRINGS FORT MYERS FLORIDA

FLORIDA CARPENTER ANT

FED UP!  Tired of seeing Carpenter Ants in your home?  Sick of spraying those awful smelling insecticides? Trying to kill off what seems to be a never ending army of silent invaders?

NO PROBLEM! Collier Pest Control, Southwest Florida’s Pest Authority, has a  highly developed method of Carpenter Ant Control that can rid you of your nightly aggravations.  As the population of Florida continues to grow and building development extends into previously undisturbed land, ant and insect sightings in homes are on the rise.

The Florida Carpenter Ant is a large ant, up to ½ inch long, with its head and thorax brown, and abdomen black.  The reputation of this ant being a house wrecker is all fable.  The Florida Carpenter Ant does not eat wood, as termites do.  They will, however, excavate galleries in previously damaged wood from moisture, termites, or dry rot.  The Florida Carpenter Ant feeds on honeydew produced from aphids, other insects, and household scraps.

The Florida Carpenter Ant nests in the ground beneath root systems, rotting logs, tree stumps, mulch beds, tree cavities or any moisture area.  These ants foliage indoors for water, food, or to form a satellite colony.
