SOD WEB WORMS COLLIER PEST CONTROL FORT MYERS FLORIDA

TROPICAL SOD WEB WORMS

If you are seeing small white or dingy brown moths fling out of your lawn, or your lawn has developed grayish brown damaged areas 2 or 3 foot in diameter.  It is a good chance you may have Sod Web Worms.  Often, damage is first noticed along hedges or flower beds.

This is the most common caterpillar to attacking turfgrasses.  These moths attack all grasses but prefer Bermuda and least desire bahia.  During the day, the moths rest in shrubbery next to turf areas and at dusk, fly over the turf depositing eggs.  When these eggs hatch into larva, they do their damage on the turf, rasping the surface or skeletonize the blades.   As the larva mature, injured grass has notches are chewed along the sides of the blades or is eaten back evenly.  Damaged areas of your lawn become larger and fuse together.  Sod Web Worms are usually not a problem until June here in Beautiful Southwest Florida.

Don't what and see if your problem goes away and you lose your beautiful lawn to this tropical partier.  Let Collier Pest Control treat your lawn and eliminate those unwanted worms in just 2 visits, 7 to 10 days apart your Sod Web Worms will be gone.  Call 239-455-4300, today for a complete explanation on our Sod Web Worm treatment or any of our services, or look us up on line at collierpestcontrol.com.  Remember, Florida does not have to be shared with insects.

SUBTERRANEAN TERMITES COLLIER PEST CONTROL FORT MYERS FLORIDA

SUBTERRANEAN TERMITES

Subterranean Termites are social insects that live in colonies consisting of many individuals.  The colonies are composed of workers, soldiers, and reproductives.  The workers are very small, 1/8th of an inch, have not wings, are white to cream colored and very numerous.  Soldiers defend the colony against insects, like ants, that can attack the colony.  Soldiers are wingless and white in color with large brown heads.  King and Queen Termites perform the reproductive functions of the colony.  They are dark brown to black in color.

Subterranean Termites, as the name suggests, live in the soil, in most cases.  Subterranean Termites are an important part of our environment.  In a natural setting, this type of termite recycles dead trees back into the soil.  Without the termite, our forests would be littered with dead trees as wood "rot" cannot break the dead trees down fast enough.  The termite sees the wood in your home as just another food source.   If the wood of your home does not contact the soil, they can build mud tunnels or tubes to reach the wood several feet above the ground.   These mud tunnels can extend for 50-60 feet to reach wood and often enter a structure through expansion joints in concrete slabs or where utilities enter the home.  The main portion of the termite colony stays in the ground and the foraging worker termites come into a home through cracks in the concrete, as small as 1/64th of an inch, a dimes width.  Once inside, they will eat the wood and bring it back to the nest in the ground as food to the termites remaining in the colony.

Subterranean termites feed on wood or other items that contain cellulose, such as paper, fiberboard, and some fabrics derived from cotton or plant fibers.  Subterranean Termites are often difficult to detect.  Detection can be from the presence of winged reproductives, mud tubes on the sides of your home, or seeing wood damage.

The control of subterranean termites is often a major expense and like any other household expense should be carefully considered.  An important point to remember is that Subterranean Termites work SLOWLY!  There are many variables when considering how fast or slow a termite colony will damage a home.  A small colony can typically eat six inches of a wooden 2X4 board in one year.  You do not need to rush into an agreement with a firm before you thoroughly investigate what are all your alternatives.

Collier Pest Control can control all types of termites for you economically.  Let our experienced termite Inspector come and evaluate if you have a termite problem or some other form of damage.  If it is termites, we can offer to you different types of service to correct the infestation.  Collier Pest Control offers long term protection  with our in ground termite baiting systems if you plan to keep you home, or traditional liquid treatments for a 5 or 7 year protection.

BRAHMINY BLIND SNAKE COLLIER PEST CONTROL FORT MYERS FLORIDA

BRAHMINY BLIND SNAKE

Two things that can freak some people out more than any other are snakes and worms.  The Brahminy Blind Snake has the dual misfortune of being a snake and looking like a worm.  The Brahminy Blind Snakes look somewhat like an earthworm.  The adult is shiny and dark brown to grayish black in color with a somewhat lighter lower surface. But, if you look carefully you will see that earthworms are segmented with rings around their body and the Brahminy Blind Snake is not segmented and have a smooth slick body.

The Brahminy Blind Snake originally lived in Southeastern Asia.  With expansion of worldwide markets, sellers of greenhouse materials have carried this snake to other tropical and subtropical parts of the world, including Florida and Hawaii.  It was once a myth that there are no snakes in Hawaii.  Perhaps this was true in the past, but not since the Brahminy Blind Snake was introduced to these islands somewhere in the 1980's. In Florida this snake is found from the Florida Keys north to Lake Okeechobee, which includes all of Southwest Florida.  They are also found in St. Petersburg and around Gainesville.

Adult Brahminy Blind Snakes are small and thin, averaging between 2 1/2 to 6 1/2 inches in length.  The head and tail-tip look much the same, with no narrowing of the neck.  The tiny eyes are covered with translucent scales, rendering these snakes almost entirely blind.  They cannot form images, but are still capable of registering light intensity.  This tropical/subtropical snake lives outside in the soil, plant litter, and rotting woody materials in areas that are warm enough o support it.  Here in Southwest Florida this snake can be found in garden, flower beds, potted plants, and out in the lawn under the thatch built up by years of mowing.  This snake feeds on the eggs, larva, and pupae of ants and termites in the areas where they live. Another interesting fact about the Brahminy Blind Snake it can lay eggs or can bear their young alive.  All of these snakes are female and reproduce unisexally.  One Brahminy Blind Snake introduced into your area can then infest your lawn and flower beds within a short period of time.

Because the Brahminy Blind Snake is not an insect pest, they should not be treated with insecticide.  The most effective way to rid the home of Brahminy Blind Snakes is to just pick them up and remove them from the home.  If left alone inside a home, they cannot survive for long.  These snakes must live in soil and are found many times living in interior potted plants.  If this becomes a recurring problem the homeowner may wish to move any interior potted plants along with their soil outside.  By moving their home, you remove the snakes.

If you would like more information on the Brahminy Blind Snake call, 239-455-4300, Collier Pest Control for a free explanation on this or any of our services, or look us up on our web site at collierpestcontrol.  Don't let unwanted pests spoil your beautiful Southwest Florida lifestyle.  Remember, Florida does not have to be shared with problem pests.

BOOKLICE / PSOCIDS COLLIER PEST CONTROL FORT MYERS FLORIDA

BOOKLICE / PSOCIDS

Booklice are very small insects found on books and papers.   They are both winged and wingless and less than a 1/8 of an inch, with chewing mouthparts.  There are more than a 100 species collectively called psocids, including Booklice are a part. The term "lice" is somewhat misleading because none of these insects are parasitic or have 8 legs.  Most of the species are found inside buildings.  The two most commonly found are the common Booklouse and the Deathwatch.  These are often found among books and papers.  They also can be found in stored grain, dried foods, insect collections, furniture, beddings, warm moist areas, leaking water pipes, air conditioning drain pans, windowsills, or damaged roofs.

The control of psocids is directly related to finding the source of the Booklice and the source of the moisture that supports these insects. Infested furniture and bedding or other movable furnishings should be thoroughly cleaned and aired.  All infested foods should be discarded.  All excess moisture areas should be dried, repaired and aired to kill fungi. Insecticides can reduce the population of Booklice for a short length of time.  To completely eliminate psocids you must find the source of moisture supporting the molds and fungi that the Booklice feed on and eliminate it.

LANDLORDS BEWARE BED BUGS ARE YOUR RESPONSIBILTY COLLIER PEST CONTROL FORT MYERS FLORIDA

LANDLORDS BEWARE

BED BUGS ARE YOUR RESPONSIBILTY

According to the Florida State Statutes, you as the landlord are responsible for the extermination of insects in your rental dwelling including bed bugs.  The law clearly intends that a landlord is responsible to maintain a safe and healthy residence for tenants.  In Florida, the Florida Statutes Chapter 83.51 maintains that "unless otherwise agreed in writing?.the landlord of a dwelling unit?.shall at all times, during the tenancy, make reasonable provisions for 1) the extermination of ?..bed bugs.  The tenant shall be required to temporarily vacate the premises for a period of time not to exceed four days, on seven days' written notice, if necessary?."

However, the law does state that the rental agreement can be modified to transfer the responsibility for bed bug control to the tenant.  Because of the cost of bed bug treatments, many leases now transfer the cost of bed bug treatment to the tenant.  Tenants are usually cash-strapped and cannot afford bed bug treatments, so the bed bug problem will escalate and become intense.

From the tenant's perspective, an infestation of bed bugs may have spread from surrounding infested apartments.  Then tenants believe the landlord should have the money from rents paid to pay for treatments.

From the landlord's perspective tenants fail to cooperate with treatments and often reintroduce bed bugs after they have been eliminated.  Of course, it is difficult for a landlord to tell whether bed bugs were re-introduced or not controlled with the treatments.

So, the debate continues.  Who should pay for a bed bug infestation in a rental dwelling?  Unless you spell out in your lease to your tenant, you are responsible for all insect control in your rental units according to the Florida Statutes.  This information is for you to be informed and to protect yourself against the rising costs of bed bug treatments.  We have been involved with the Health Department in a few rental disputes on who was responsible for the bed bug treatment and control.  The landlord has been told in those cases that they are responsible and has to arrange and pay for the bed bug treatment.

Call, 239-455-4300, for a complete explanation of all the different types of bed bug treatments or any of our services, or look us up on our web site at collierpestcontrol.com.  Remember Florida does not need to be shared with insects.

YEARLY FLEA TREATMENT COLLIER PEST CONTROL FORT MYERS FLORIDA

YEARLY FLEA TREATMENT

The Yearly Flea Treatment is an alternative service to our regular quarterly flea treatment.  This service gives you the freedom of not having to make quarterly appointments for service and protection for a whole year.  This is a clean odor less treatment that does not harm the carpet or upholstered furniture.  The only negative to this service is that the home must be at least 50% carpeted and if professionally cleaned will void the guarantee.  In addition to treating the carpet, we will treat all the hard surface flooring and furniture with a residual insecticide and growth regulator.

This Yearly Flea Treatment is a fine talc granule that is applied to the carpet with a calibrated rolling applicator, dispensing the material at a rate of 1 pound of material per 100 sq feet.  Then a carpet groomer vibrates the carpet and allows the talc granule material to fall to the nap of the carpet. The yearly flea material controls the fleas by killing the larva stage at the nap of the carpet, covering all organic material and sediment in the carpet.  The larva stage of the flea has a chewing mouth part and feeds on any organic material in the carpet.  The larva stage will ingest the yearly flea material, which acts as a stomach poison, and kills off the larva stage.  This acts very much like a growth regulator but is an insecticide.

If the yearly flea material is not removed by professional cleaning, this clean flea treatment will last a full year to protect you and your pets against annoying biting fleas.

Call,239-455-4300, today for a free estimate and a complete explanation on any of our services, or look us up on our web site at collierpestcontrol.com.  Don't let unwanted pests spoil your beautiful Southwest Florida lifestyle.  Remember, Florida does not have to be shared with insects!

DuPont? Altriset Termiticide COLLIER PEST CONTROL FORT MYERS FLORIDA

DuPont? Altriset Termiticide

Now there is a non-repellent termiticide that provides excellent control of termites yet has minimal impact on the environment. The team of scientists at DuPont has developed another new class of chemistry with this latest innovation, providing high-performing termite control and soil residual for ongoing structural protection.

DuPont? Altriset,? the first soil-applied liquid termiticide launched in almost a decade, is in a class of chemistry with a mode of action like no other termite control product. Laboratory and field study results prove Altriset? halts termite feeding within hours while providing termite elimination for critical long-term structural protection. Plus, Altriset? offers an excellent toxicological and environmental profile.  In addition to requiring no signal word on the label, DuPont? Altriset? is the first and only liquid termiticide to be classified as reduced-risk under the U.S. EPA reduced-risk program.

Studies have proven that DuPont? Altriset? is highly effective against termites, and even halts feeding in hours. Laboratory tests have shown as termites tunnel through the treated zone, they quickly acquire a lethal dose of Altriset.? However, these termites will continue to crawl, groom and clean for extended periods after exposure.  Once affected by Altriset,? termites will begin to exhibit increased aggregation, enhanced grooming and contact with other colony members for hours.  Affected termites will become more lethargic and show signs of muscle paralysis; decreased coordination and mortality will ultimately occur within several days. The delayed mortality and increased colony interaction are key reasons why Altriset? is so effective.

DuPont? Altriset? is a highly effective way to control termites while also minimizing impact on the environment. Altriset? also has an excellent environmental and toxicological profile?requiring no signal word on the label. This achievement is one reason why the U.S. EPA has awarded Altriset? reduced-risk status for use as a termiticide treatment.

Collier Pest Control is also concerned about the impact we have on our environment.  This is why we are very excited about the New Altriset? by DuPont? that has little or no toxic effect on our surroundings and environment!  If you are looking for a environmentally safe way to control damaging subterranean termites, this is it.  Altriset? control termites quickly and without any impact to our surrounding.

Call, 239-455-4300, for a complete explanation of how an Altriset? treatment will work for you or any of our other services, or look us up on our web site at collierpestcontrol.com.  Remember Florida does not have to be shared with insects.

FALL ARMY WORMS COLLIER PEST CONTROL NAPLES FLORIDA

FALL ARMY WORMS

Fall Army Worms are native to the tropical regions of the western hemisphere and are a constant threat to southern turf.  They normally winter successfully in Southern Florida and Southern Texas.  The adult of the Fall Army Worm is a shaded gray and brown moth.  Adults are nocturnal, and are most active during warm, humid evenings. Here in South Florida adults can be found from April to December and sometimes during the winter. They are strong fliers, and disperses long distances during the summer months.  Adult moths only live around 10 days and lay most of her eggs within the first four to five days.  Eggs hatch in 7 to 10 days or 2 to 3 days in July and August. Larva takes as little as 12 days to mature in July or up to 30 days in October. The pupa stage only takes 8 to 9 days and there could be as many as 3 to 4 generations each summer here in South Florida.

The 1 1/2 inch long mature Fall Army Worm larva with distinct strips along its sides does all the damage to your turf and foliage.  They feed on grasses any time of the day but are most active in the early morning.  Fall Army Worms are known for their habit of moving and feeding in mass from one turf grass area to another.  They commonly eat everything green, leaving only a few stems.  This moving front of larvae may consume many square feet of turf which seems to disappear overnight.  It seems as if the ground is moving with so many caterpillars in the grass.

Don't let the Fall Army Worm destroy your lawn!  Call, 239-455-4300, for a full explanation on how we control Fall Army Worms and all other turf damaging insects and fungus or look us up on our web site at collierpestcontrol.com.  Remember Florida does not have to be shared with insects.

GRAY LEAF SPOT FUNGUS COLLIER PEST CONTROL NAPLES FLORIDA

GRAY LEAF SPOT FUNGUS

GRAY LEAF SPOT:           Gray Leaf Spot Fungus develops round to oblong spots on the leaves of St. Augustine and Rye grasses that are brown to ash colored with purple to brown margins.  Spots may be covered with gray mold in warm, humid weather.  Lesions may also occur on the stems.  In severe cases leave have a scorched appearance.  This fungus is prevalent during the rainy summer months.

The elimination of most fungi can be prevented or controlled with traditional spraying or dusting.  To repeat, this is not a cure.  To prevent these fungi from appearing and damaging your turf, the turf must be sprayed before and not after the disease strikes.  It must be kept on the turf as constantly as possible for the period the disease period is likely to attack.

Collier Pest Control does not offer monthly or other scheduled turf maintenance programs.  Collier Pest Control does offer one time correction treatments for fungi and other turf damaging problems. If you have been told or suspect you may have a fungus problem in your lawn, call Collier Pest Control, 239-455-4300 for a Free Inspection or a complete explanation to any of our services.  You also can look us up on our web site at collierpestcontrol.com or Email us at info@collierpestcontrol.com.  Remember Florida does not have to be shared with insects.

SPRINGTAILS COLLIER PEST CONTROL NAPLES FLORIDA

SPRINGTAILS

Springtails are minute wingless insects that occur in large numbers in moist soil and are found in homes with very high humidity, organic debris, or mold.  Homeowners sometimes discover these insects in large numbers in swimming pools, potted plants, or in moist soil and mulch.  Springtails feed on decaying, damp vegetation causing organic material and other nutrients to return to the soil which are later used by plants.

Springtails range in length from .25 to 6 millimeter and range in color from white to yellow, gray, or blue gray.  They are unique in the fact that attached to the tip of their abdomen is a forked appendage called the tenaculum, resembling a lever.  When disturbed, this lever strikes the ground, causing the insect to spring into the air.            They are capable of springing up to about 4 inches into the air, which is where they received their name.  Because of this jumping motion they are sometimes confused with fleas.

These insects are pests due to their large numbers.  They do not bite or transmit diseases.  They can easily climb the sides of houses and are attracted to lights.  They can also be brought into homes in soil of potted plants.  Springtail populations have also been found floating in swimming pools.

Controlling Springtails can be as easy as drying out the soil and mulch around your home or misting the infested areas with a dishwashing soap in water.  Insecticides can be applied to control these pesky pests when great numbers show up.

Call, 239-455-4300, for a full explanation on how to control Springtails or any of our services, or look us up on our web site at collierpestcontrol.com.  Remember Florida does not have to be shared with insects.

WHAT IS TOXIC COLLIER PEST CONTROL NAPLES FLORIDA

WHAT IS TOXIC

Today's modern convinces include many natural and manmade products to give us a higher standard of living.  When purchasing these products, there is a personal responsibility to pick and choose the product that combines proper safety and environmental protection for the usage needed.  Most people are not aware of the level of toxicity a product has when using it.  The general public also is not aware that the government has given us a standard code of toxicity on which each product is measured.  The level of toxicity must be put on the front of the label on any non food product produced.

The level of toxicity each product measures are found on the label of the product in the form of a SIGNAL WORD.  This SIGNAL WORD indicates how potentially dangerous this product is to humans and other animals.  Knowing the product's level of toxicity can help you choose wisely and take the proper precautionary measures for handling and using the product.

The SIGNAL WORD must appear in large letters on the front panel of the label, immediately following the statement "Keep Out of the Reach of Children", which also appears on all product labels.

These are the four levels of toxicity and the SIGNAL WORDS for each level.

DANGER      This word signals that the product is highly toxic.  A taste to a teaspoonful of the undiluted product, taken by mouth, could kill an average sized (175 lb.) adult.  Any product which is highly toxic, orally, dermal or through inhalation, or which causes severe eye and skin burning will be labeled  DANGER.

WARNING    This word signals that the product is moderately toxic.  As little as a teaspoon to an ounce of the undiluted product, taken by mouth, could kill an average sized (175 lb.) adult.  Any product which is moderately toxic orally, dermal or through inhalation, or causes moderate eye and skin irritation, will be labeled WARNING.

CAUTION     This word signals that the product is slightly toxic.  An ounce to a pint of the undiluted product, taken by mouth, could kill an average sized (175 lb.) adult.  Any product which is slightly toxic orally, dermal, or through inhalation, or causes slight eye and skin irritation, will be labeled  CAUTION.

NO SIGNAL WORD            The absence of a signal word indicates that the product is almost non toxic, less than lightly toxic.  Much more than a pint of undiluted product, taken by mouth, would be needed to kill an average sized (175 lb.) adult.  This also indicates that the product has little or no toxicity to dermal or inhalation poisoning and does not have much or any eye or skin irritation.

Check your storage closets, and when you shop look at the labels for the toxic level, SIGNAL WORD, for products that meet your safety and needs.  Collier Pest Control uses the most effective materials available, in the caution level or less, when servicing your home or business.  We take your safety and our environment very seriously in choosing products that is why we offer our Enviro-Care Pest Control Service.  This service offers you complete pest control service without any open pesticide spraying.  Only natural products are placed in cracks and crevices to give you comfort and protection.

ROACHES SURINAM COCKROACH COLLIER PEST CONTROL NAPLES FLORIDA

THE SURINAM COCKROACH

This tropical cockroach usually is not noticed until large numbers have populated an area.  They remain inside cracks and crevices, under leaf litter, and mulch during the day and come out at night to feed upon plants.  Surinam cockroaches are plant feeders and can severely damage plants in greenhouses and atriums.  They also are commonly found in potted plants, planters, and other humid, hot situations outdoors in the Gulf coast states from Florida to Texas.

The Surinam cockroach burrows into the soil to a depth of three to four inches, where they construct a burrow containing nymphs, (adolescents), and females incubating their egg capsules.  These egg capsules produce from 14 to 42 eggs each.  Surinam cockroaches are unique, in that there are NO males of the species found in the United States.  The females reproduce parthenogentically with out mating with a male.  Surinam cockroaches are 3/4" to 1" long, are brown in color,  and have a very obvious dark brown to black shield, (the area behind its head), which is called the pronotum.

To control this insect it is critical to remove harborage areas, such as excessive leaf litter, excessive mulch, unneeded landscape timbers, stones, or other objects close to the foundation of your building.  Residual materials should be applied to foundations, plantings, woodpiles, potted plants, mulch and any infested areas.  Barrier treatments can substantially reduce Surinam cockroach populations around your home.

TERMITES DRYWOOD TERMITES COLLIER PEST CONTROL NAPLES FLORIDA

DRYWOOD TERMITES

Drywood Termites as well as other termites dwell in Florida.  Drywood Termites infest dry wood and do not require contact with the soil.  Other types of termites need to nest in the soil in order to survive.

Drywood Termites are a social insect that live in colonies.  The colonies are composed of kings, queens and soldiers.  There is no worker caste of termite as in other types of termites. The work or foraging for food is done by the immature termites before they become adults.  These nymphs, the immature termites, which are most numerous castes, are white and wingless.  Kings and Queens Termites perform the reproductive function of the colony.  They are light to dark brown and 1/3 to one inch in length.  The Soldiers guard the colony against invaders such as ants.  They are white and wingless with large brownish heads and jaws.  The soldiers and immature remain inside the wood at all times.

Drywood Termites are more common along coastal areas, although they are also found inland.  Drywood Termite food consists of cellulose obtained from wood.  Infestations of Drywood Termites may be found in almost any product containing cellulose.  They are most commonly found infesting attics, window sills, door frames, woodwork in buildings and furniture.

Detecting Drywood Termites infestations may be noticed in several ways.  One way is during the early months of the year.  Drywood Termite Kings and Queens emerge from the colonies as swarms.  The purpose of these swarms is to establish new colonies.  The appearance of winged termites in the home is an indication of probable infestation; however, they may have come in from outside.  Swarming termites are attracted to light.  Swarming termites may be found around window sills or lights.  Shortly after emerging from the colony, swarming termites land and lose their wings.  If the swarming termites do not find a suitable nesting area, they will die.

A common way to detect Drywood Termites is that Drywood Termites unlike other types of termites excrete pellets of partly digested wood.  These pellets are straw-colored to reddish brown and about the size of sand.  The pellets are pushed from the galleries and found on

are surfaces beneath the infested wood.

An experienced eye can detect Drywood Termites in an advanced stage of infestation from surface blistering.  Drywood Termites sometimes tunnel close to the surface giving the wood a blistered appearance.

Preventative measures for the Drywood Termite is limited at best.  Any opening to windows and attics should be screened.  Any cracks or voids should be caulked or filled with wood filler.  The use of termite resistant woods such as Redwood, Bald Cypress, Mahogany, Spanish cedar, and commercial pressure treated wood will resist Drywood Termites for several years until weathering makes it susceptible to infestation.

Drywood Termites require a completely different control method; therefore' the infestation must be correctly identified first.  If detected in the early stages and damage is localized, a Drywood Termite colony may be controlled by removing and replacing the damaged wood or by the application of a termite labeled insecticide.  If the infestation is too extensive and advanced for local treatment, it will be necessary to tent and fumigate the entire building.  This method can be costly and leaves no residual protection; it is usually the only alternative when many large termite colonies are present.

We live in a sea of Termites here in Florida.  It's not if you will get a termite problem, It is when will you get a termite problem.  The University of Florida states that, 2/3's of all new homes in Florida will have a termite problem within 5 years.  To protect your home, have a FREE TERMITE INSPECTION performed yearly from Collier Pest Control.  Then consider one of our economic protective termite services to protect your valuable home form unwanted damage and stress.

Call, 239-455-4300, Collier Pest Control today for a FREE TERMITE INSPECTION and a complete explanation and free estimate on any of our services, or look us up on our web site at collierpestcontrol.com.  Don't let unwanted guests spoil your beautiful Southwest Florida lifestyle.  Remember, Florida does not have to be shared with insects!
