FLEA LAWN TREATMENTS FROM COLLIER PEST CONTROL NAPLES BONITA SPRINGS FORT MYERS FLORIDA

FLEA LAWN TREATMENT

Here in beautiful Southwest Florida our flea season is all year long and can intensify between November through May. Most common fleas in this area are the Cat Fleas that are a nuisance inside and originate outside.  To correct this you need to treat all areas your pet frequents, in the house and the lawn outside.  This should be done the same time the pet is being treated by the veterinarian or yourself.

Collier Pest Control, Southwest Florida’s Pest Authority, provides an environmentally safe Flea Lawn Treatment.  It’s safe for people, pets, and plants.  This service will give you relief from fleas on your lawn and provide flea control of new adult fleas for a 90 day period.

The adult flea is a small, active, wingless, dark brown insect with a flat body.  It can jump 7 to 8 inches vertically, and 14 to 16 inches horizontally.  The eggs are laid while the female flea is on the host animal. When the pet scratches, shakes, rub up against furniture the eggs can fall off onto the floor or the furniture.  These eggs hatch into very small caterpillar-like larvae and feed on almost any organic debris including the dried blood from adult flea excrement. The flea larvae upon reaching larval maturity will pupate (form a cocoon around itself) and grow into an adult flea inside the cocoon.  Then when stimulated by heat, vibration, or carbon dioxide the flea will emerge out of the cocoon and jump on the nearby host. As an adult flea it will live 90% of the time on a host for feeding.  The adult flea has a piercing sucking mouthpart to draw blood from its host.

Collier Pest Control provides you the latest most advanced method of Flea Lawn Treatment available.  We offer you the advantages of growth regulators and residual materials to control the egg, larva, and adult stages of the flea for up to 90 days.

If you live in Naples, Fort Myers, or Southwest Florida call 239-455-4300,Collier Pest Control today for an estimate and a complete explanation on any of our services, or look us up on our web site at collierpestcontrol.com.  Don’t let unwanted guest spoil your beautiful Southwest Florida Lifestyle!  Remember, Florida does not have to be shared with insects!

FROGS BUFO GIANT POISONOUS FROGS CONTROL FROM COLLIER PEST CONTROL NAPLES BONITA SPRINGS FORT MYERS FLORIDA

BUFO MARINUS FROGS

GIANT POISONOUS FROGS

The Giant Bufo Marinus Toad is the largest of the frogs and toads found in Florida. The giant toad is not native to the United States.  Known scientifically as Bufo Marinus, the Cane Toad, Giant Toad, or Marine Toad is native to an area extending from Mexico and Central America to the Amazon Basin and was introduced to Florida in 1966 in an attempt to control the population of a type of beetle that was ravaging the sugar cane crops. The toads ignored the cane beetles, but began ravaging everything else in sight instead. They have immense appetites, breed by the zillions, and secrete poisonous gunk that makes them unpalatable to all but a tiny handful of native animals and poisonous to many.

Giant Toads range in size from 4 - 6 in. (10 - 15.2 cm). Females can weigh up to 3.3 lbs (1.5 kg). Giant Toads are huge brown toads that vary in color between brown and red and may have darker and lighter spots. These Giant Toads breed from June to January, but Giant Toads have been found in breeding condition throughout the year. Females produce 8,000 to 50,000 eggs in a clutch and can breed at least twice a year for 5 years in the wild. Giant Toads normally lay eggs in slow moving freshwater streams, but they can also breed in brackish water. Tadpoles hatch in 48 to 72 hours. Depending on the water temperature and food availability, they can complete their development in 16 to 180 days. Giant Toads can live for at least 15 years in captivity.  The Giant Toad calls are a slow, low-pitched trill that has been compared to the sound of exhaust noise from a distant tractor. The largest males tend to have the deepest voices.

The Giant Toads are an exotic species that will eat all types of native frogs and toads. This species is skilled at locating all types of food.  They have even been known to eat pet food.

When this Giant Toad is threatened or handled, it secretes a highly toxic milky substance from its large glandsat the back of its head, behind the ears. This secretion can burn your eyes, may irritate your skin, and can kill cats and dogs if they ingest the secretion. Symptoms of Giant Toad poisoning in pets include drooling, head-shaking, crying, loss of coordination, and, in more serious cases, convulsions.

In Florida, Giant Toads can be found associated with urban and agricultural areas. This species breeds in canals, flooded ditches, shallow pools and fish ponds. At night, Giant Toads have been known to congregate around house lights to feed on insects.

Giant toads are beneficial for the gardener and homeowner in general. They do displace native toads and reptiles and birds if they can catch them. Giant toads are often transported in shipments of fruit and other commodities. Until effective control methods are available like quarantine checks and the stopping of any accidental releases of these toads, there is little or no hope in the control these Giant Toads.
This Bufo Marinus Frog can be removed and disposed of humanely by placing them in a plastic container (or bag) and then in the freezer for three days and then burying the carcasses. If you do not wish to handle the toads, call Collier Pest Control at 239-455-4300 for a full explanation on our Frog and Lizard Repellant Treatment or look us up on our website at collierpestcontrol.com. Remember Florida does not have to be shared with pests.

LAWNS APHID PEST CONTROL FROM COLLIER PEST CONTROL NAPLES BONITA SPRINGS FORT MYERS FLORIDA

APHIDS

Aphids or "plant lice" may infest almost any ornamental trees, shrubs and flowers. They feed by inserting microscopically thin mouthparts into the plant phloem and sucking out sap that is rich in sugars. As they feed, aphids also inject saliva. This saliva causes some plant leaves to curl or crinkle and flower buds may become hardened, causing the flowers to be distorted.  Overall plant vigor may suffer.  However, their ability to transmit plant viruses may be more harmful than any direct feeding damage.  Aphids are slow, fragile, insects that vary from 1/16 to 1/4 inch long. They can be black, brown, yellow, red, gray or green. They are more commonly found on camellia, crape-myrtle, gardenia, hibiscus, ixora, oak, oleander, ornamental grasses, palm, rose, as well as nearly all annual plants.  Most aphids feed on the new plant growth.

Ants feed on the honeydew and when ants are observed, plants should be examined closely for these sucking pests.

Examine your plants weekly during the spring, summer, and fall. Look at the undersides of a few leaves on each plant and observe the stems for aphids, especially the new growth. Many natural enemies of aphids include lady bugs, green lacewings, parasitic wasps, assassin bugs, ambush bugs and spiders.  Sometimes these parasites and predators are not able to keep aphids under control, so chemical control may be needed.  Usually aphids are not difficult to control with insecticides. But, plants may become re-infested from adjacent areas throughout the year.

If you notice or see Aphids on your plants and they are looking sickly, call 239-455-4300 Collier Pest Control for a full explanation on how we can rid you of plant eating insects, or look us up on our website at collierpestcontrol.com.  Remember Florida does not have to be shared with insects!

ANTS BIG HEAD ANT LAWN TREATMENT FROM COLLIER PEST CONTROL NAPLES BONITA SPRINGS FORT MYERS FLORIDA

BIG HEAD ANTS

LAWN TREATMENTS

TheBig Headed Ant is a very successful invasive species that is sometimes considered a danger to native ants and has been nominated as one of the 100 "World's Worst" invaders.  Big Head Ants has been a pest in southern Florida for many years, and according to reports by pest control operators, it is becoming an even more pervasive nuisance as it displaces other ants.  Big Head Ants can be found nesting in disturbed soils, lawns, flowerbeds, under objects, such as bricks, cement slabs, flower pots, around trees or water pipes, along the base of structures, and walkways, where displaced soil is usually observed from the action of ants digging below the surface.  It is possible that the increase in Big Head Ant infestations was augmented by several years of excessive hurricane activity in Florida that damaged lawns and killed trees which necessitated the use of increased amounts of sod and other replacement vegetation that may have been infested with this ant. The Big Head Ant does not sting or cause any structural damage, and usually does not bite unless the nest is disturbed, and even then, the bite is not painful.

Big Head Ants are a soil-nesting ant that leaves piles of loose sandy soil. Homeowners are annoyed by these "dirt piles" and by ants foraging in bathrooms, kitchens, around doors, and windows, as well as on exterior paved or brick walkways or driveways. Control of Big Head Ants is difficult because the ant colonies are numerous and populations usually extend across property lines. The Big Head Ant receives its common name from the large-sized head of the major worker, or "soldier." Minor workers are small reddish brown ants.

Collier Pest Control Southwest Florida’s Pest Authority has developed a successful 3 step treatment method to eliminate and control Big Head Ants.  We will treat your lawn with growth regulator materials to eliminate the development of queens producing new ants and stop the development of the larva stage (the baby ants) from growing up into adult Big Head Ants. With the addition of interior ant baiting, this 3 step lawn treatment will eliminate Big Head Ants quickly and is guaranteed for a full 90 days.

Collier Pest Control can continue to keep the Big Head Ants away with a quarterly Big Head Ant Lawn Maintenance program and stop all unwanted Big Head Ants from moving back into your home and lawn.

If you live in Naples, Bonita Springs, Fort Myers, or anywhere in beautiful Southwest Florida call 239-455-4300 Collier Pest Control for a full explanation on our exclusive Big Head Ant Lawn Treatments or on any of our services.  All our services and most of Florida’s problem pests are also on our web site at collierpestcontrol.com.  Remember Florida does not have to be shared with insects.

LIZARDS EASTERN GLASS LIZARD CONTROL FROM COLLIER PEST CONTROL NAPLES BONITA SPRINGS FORT MYER FLORIDAS

EASTERN GLASS LIZARD

(SKINK)

The Eastern Glass Lizard has no legs and is often referred to as a Glass Snake.  It can be distinguished from snakes by their visible ear openings, eyelids, and small scales on the belly. It is actually a lizard, but it looks of course, like a snake.  The Eastern Glass Lizard lives mostly in the Southeast United States, and throughout Florida.  Being the largest of Florida’s native lizards, it can grow up to about 30 inches long, and they eat mostly insects and spiders.  They spend much of their lives burrowing through soil and piles of leaves in search of insects underground.  This Skink got its name because of its tail. Florida is home to four quite similar-looking legless species know as Glass Lizards.  As with many lizards, if it’s attacked and a predator has it by the tail, it can detach the tail, allowing the rest of the animal to escape and survive.  The tail of the Glass Lizard apparently will break into many pieces, like glass.  The pieces will also move, so that the predator will focus on them, and allow the body of the animal to get away.  Glass Lizards will allow themselves to be approached, but if you try to pick one up, it will thrash around wildly and probably scare you into dropping it.

If you live in Naples, Bonita Springs, Fort Myers, or anywhere in beautiful Southwest Florida and are having a problem with lizards or any other problem pest call, 239-455-4300 Collier Pest Control today for a free estimate and a complete explanation to any of our services, or look us up on our website at collierpestcontrol.com.  Do not let unwanted guests spoil your beautiful Southwest Florida lifestyle.  Remember, Florida does not have to be shared with insects!

ROACHES GERMAN COCKROACH CONTROL FROM COLLIER PEST CONTROL NAPLES BONITA SPRINGS FORT MYERS FLORIDA

GERMAN ROACHES

Collier Pest Control is your Southwest Florida Pest Authority including the German Cockroaches.   The German Roach is the most common household insect pest found in the United States.  They are usually found infesting in food preparation areas, kitchens, and bathrooms.   In severe infestations, they have the capability of living in any portion of a heated structure.  They favor warm, humid atmospheres where temperatures are around 70 to 75 degrees.  The German Roach is most active at night and hides in secluded areas such as cupboards, behind cabinets, wall voids, and motor housings of appliances.

The adult German Roach is about ½ inch long, brown, and has two dark longitudinal bands or streaks on the top the thorax (just behind the head).   German Roaches are regularly carried from place to place in such things as bagged potatoes, onion bags, beverage cartons, grocery bags, handbags, and in the folds of clothing.

The German Roach has the highest reproductive potential of all common pest cockroaches.  Female German Roaches produce about 30 to 50 eggs at a time.  The eggs are contained in a capsule with is attached to the tip of the abdomen and carried throughout most of the incubation period.  The eggs hatch in about 28 days at room temperature, and reach maturity in 40 to 125 days.  Adult female German Roaches live about 200 days producing 6 to 8 egg capsules or 180 to 400 eggs.

Sanitation is the cornerstone to effective and long lasting German Roach control.  Accessible water and food material must be eliminated as much as possible. Hiding, harborage areas need to be sealed off where possible.  Remove hiding areas like open trashcans, old newspapers, rag piles, unused grocery bags, unused boxes, excess grease and food around appliances, and any place a roach could hide or eat.

Collier Pest Control can control regular infestations of German Roaches with our “Collier Complete” pest control service.  If the infestation is severe, we must apply our thorough German Roach Treatment to all parts of your home.  Both services treat the cracks and crevices inside your home as well as the perimeter, mulch beds, soffits, eaves, and entryways outside effectively and quickly.

BIRD CONTROL FROM COLLIER PEST CONTROL NAPLES BONITA SPRINGS FORT MYERS FLORIDA

Bird Control

UNWANTED PIGIONS, SPARROWS, STARLINGS, CROWS, AND SEAGULLS.

Birds have a high rate of metabolism and spend most of their waking hours gathering food to support it.  For most birds, the male stakes out a nesting territory to attract a female. Birds can harbor disease organisms that may affect people, pets, and domesticated animals.  The actual incidence of transmission of diseases from urban pest birds is difficult to assess.  But, like rodents, when flocks of birds inhabit areas and buildings in close proximity to people, the potential for disease transmission is very real.

Bird droppings deface many urban buildings, monuments, and public spaces. The uric acid (white material) in their droppings is not just unsightly; it can damage the finish on buildings, automobiles, etc... When birds occupy warehouses and defecate on stored goods, this creates an expensive problem for the warehouse management when their customers (retailers) refuse to accept contaminated goods.

The most common problem associated with birds nesting in buildings is bird mites invading the human occupied space during or after the nesting season. Bird mites, like northern fowl mite and tropical fowl mite, will bite humans and cause a small pustule, similar to a chigger bite.

Like rodent management programs, effective bird management programs should involve a variety of methods.  Eliminating birds food and water sources, repairing openings that birds enter, eliminate areas of nesting or roasting, apply repellants, and reduce populations are many ways to reduce the unwanted pest bird problem you may experiencing.

Collier Pest Control can assist you in many ways to eliminate your pest bird problem.  We have spines, coils, and electric tracking that can be mounted on ledges where birds roast.  We can secure netting to keep birds from entering areas.  There is bird repellants such as paste to apply where birds land and roast.  There are sound devices and many types of hanging and visual deterrents that will scare off pest birds.  If necessary, bird traps can be placed in areas to trap, remove, and relocate pest birds.

If you are having unwanted birds on your home or business, let Collier Pest Control explain how we can eliminate the problem for you!  Call Collier Pest Control at 239-455-4300, or look us up on our website at collierpestcontrol.com, from Naples, Bonita Springs, Fort Myers, or anywhere in Southwest Florida for a full explanation on Bird Control or any of our services.  Remember Florida does not have to be shared with pests.

SNAKE CONTROL FROM COLLIER PEST CONTROL NAPLES BONITA SPRINGS FORT MYERS FLORIDA

SNAKES

There is an abundance of wildlife including a wide variety of retiles. Snakes, and their cousins the alligators, crocodiles, turtles and lizards, play an interesting and vital role in Florida’s complex ecology. There are about 45 species of snakes living in Florida, with only 6 that are venomous, and only a few of them are home to us in Southwest Florida. So, that leaves 39 species that are non-venomous and harmless, unless you break your leg or neck trying to get away from one.

Many people have an uncontrollable fear of snakes. Whatever the reason for disfavor, all snakes are beneficial to the balance of life and the animal kingdom. They eat insects, rats, mice, worms, toads, frogs, fish and some, like the Indigos and Kingsnakes, eat other snakes including venomous ones. They all help keep the ecosystem they live in at a good balance.

Florida snakes are not aggressive and, unless they are cornered, most will flee when humans approach. If you find a snake and you do not know whether or not it is venomous, here’s word of caution. Do not catch a snake and do not handle one unless you are sure it is not venomous. Occasionally, you might encounter a snake that is reluctant to leave because it is basking in the sun to get warm.

Among most snakebite victims, an unacceptably high number are bitten on the hands and arms when they are handling a snake. It is also known that after a snake has been killed, its reflexes may continue to work. Those reflexes typically cause the body to writhe slowly for awhile, but they can cause a convulsive contraction and the snake can still bite you. Do not handle a freshly killed snake.

The only acceptable treatment for venomous snake bite involves the use of antivenin. So, if you or someone you are with is bitten by a venomous snake, seek immediate medical attention at the nearest hospital or medical facility. Stay as calm as you can, remove any rings that could restrict circulation if your tissue swells; keep the bitten area of your body below the level of your heart.

Because snakes occupy a variety of habitats, it is generally impossible nor would it generally be desirable to eliminate the snake population in an area. If a snake pest is killed or removed from an area, it is likely that more snakes will eventually reoccupy the area, as long as the area remains attractive to snakes. The most effective control of snakes is to remove as much snake harborage as possible to make the area unattractive for new snakes to inhabit. Areas such as woodpiles, rock piles, scattered debris, tall grass, thick foliage, and any area a snake could hide. A good rodent control will also help to reduce the snake problems, as rodents make up much of the diet of many snakes, especially the poisonous ones.

The control of snakes is limited since there is no registered chemical or baits to kill or control snakes. There has been some limited success in trapping some types of snakes.

Collier Pest Control, Southwest Florida’s Pest Authority, does offer a Snake Repellant and trapping Treatments to keep unwanted snakes from entering an area for a limited period of time. Yes, we can apply our specialized snake repellant 30 to 40 feet away from and around your home or business to repel and keep problem snakes from crossing the line of repellant material or we can set effective corrective traps to catch any unwanted snakes that can be a pest to your family and pets.

CENTIPEDE CONTROL FROM COLLIER PEST CONTROL NAPLES BONITA SPRINGS FORT MYERS FLORIDA

CENTIPEDES

Centipedes are very common here in Southwest Florida.  Sometimes confused with millipedes do not damage food or furnishings in your home. Centipedes are identified by having one pair of legs per body segment compared with millipedes that have two pair of legs per body segment and are usually brownish, flattened animals.  Centipedes are fast runners and grow to a length from 1 to 6 inches.  Centipedes have an appendage at the rear of their body that looks like a singer.  It is not, this appendage is designed for the Centipede to hold it’s pray until it can eat it.

Centipedes have poorly developed eyes and are most active at night.  They are active predators and feed mainly on insects and spiders.  All centipedes have venom glands to immobilize their prey.  The jaws of the smaller local species cannot penetrate human skin; however the larger species may inflict painful bites.  This is how they catch their food source which is spiders, small live insects and their larva.

Centipedes live humid damp dark places such as under stones, leaf litter, logs, bark, ground cover and debris.  If they invade your home the Centipede could be found most likely in closets, bathrooms, and kitchen areas.

Centipedes usually lay 15 to 55 eggs clustered together in the soil but sometimes they are laid singly.  The eggs hatch soon after they are deposited.  The female will usually guard the newly hatched young.  Young Centipedes closely resemble the adult and require 3 years to mature.  Centipedes are rather long-lived and individuals may live up to 6 years.

The Collier Complete Treatment from Collier Pest Control, Southwest Florida’s Pest Control Authority, will control invading Centipedes from you home and family.

FLIES HUMPBACK FLY CONTROL WITH COLLIER PEST CONTROL NAPLES BONITA SPRINGS FORT MYERS FLORIDA

HUMPBACK FLIES

ALSO KNOWN AS PHORID FLIES, FILTH FLY, SEWER FLY,

DRAIN FLY, VINEGAR FLIES

We’ve all seen them, those pesky gnat type flies that hover over you food or drinks in a restaurant or sports bar.  Most likely this is the pest that is bothering you.  This fly gets its name from the humpbacked profile when viewed from the side.

Adult humpback flies can be found in unsanitary places.  They can transport various disease-causing organisms to food materials.  They can even be found in human corpses in morgues, mortuaries, and mausoleums. This fly is a great concern in health-care facilities because of their unsanitary habits, and because larvae have been found in open wounds of patients.

The larvae breed in a wide variety of moist decaying organic matter which includes dung, fungi, and decaying plant material.  In offices, overwatered potted plants are often the source.  They also have been found in unusual places including a tin of boot polish, a pot of glue paint, and a bucket of animal-based glue.

The key to eliminating Humpback Flies is to find their breeding sources, all of them, and removing the organic material in drains, under refrigeration equipment, remove slabs for broken pipes under slabs and repair, residual pesticides are rarely if ever required for the control of phorid flies (humpback flies), but after breeding sources have been removed, a non residual pesticide can be used to kill the adults present.

If you’re finding small flies being a nuisance in your kitchen, bath, or your restaurant you most likely have Humpback Flies (Phorid Flies). Don’t be annoyed anymore; call, 239-454-4300, Collier Pest Control, Southwest Florida’s Pest Authority including Naples, Fort Myers, for a complete explanation on any of our services. Remember Florida does not have to be shared with insects.

LIZARD CONTROL FROM COLLIER PEST CONTROL NAPLES BONITA SPRINGS FORT MYERS FLORIDA

CURLYTAIL LIZARD

The Curlytail Lizard is a popular pet.  Native to the Bahamas and found in almost every West Indies Island, it was introduced to Florida in the 1940’s to combat sugar cane pests.  Curlytail’s get their name due to their habit of curling their tail above their body when disturb.  Curlytail lizards also use their tail as a distraction to predators by twitching it rapidly while fighting. They are sturdy, robust-looking lizards that sometimes grow to a length of 11 inches.  They usually have bronze, brown, or gray as dominant color with black or gold spots, blotches, or line.  Curlytails are now common throughout most of Florida’s southeastern counties.  Found in parking lots, along walls, and around old buildings especially where there are cracks and pieces of rubble.  These lizards are fast moving and enjoy the ability to run and climb.  They are a sit-and-wait predator eating crickets, grasshoppers, ants, and beetles.  There is some concern that these introduced lizards will compete with and even feed on native species like The Green Anole.

If you wish to keep Lizards, Frogs, or Toads away from your home or business, Collier Pest Control has a monthly Frog and Lizard Repellant Treatment to keep Lizards, Frogs, and Toads away from your home or business.

If you live in Naples, Fort Myers, Bonita Springs, or anywhere in beautiful Southwest Florida and want a full explanation on our Lizard, Frog Repellant Treatment call our office or look us up on our website at collierpestcontrol.com.  Remember, Florida does not have to be shared with pests.

FROG CONTROL FROM COLLIER PEST CONTROL NAPLES BONITA SPRINGS FORT MYERS FLORIDA

TREE FROGS

Frogs are common throughout the world. There are over 85 species here in the United States. The most common species include tree frogs, toads, and bullfrogs. Tree frogs and bullfrogs are most common where there is adequate water for their survival and reproduction. Toads are more prevalent where it is dry. Though tree frogs are considered beneficial because they eat insects, in some cases local populations can become a nuisance.

Tree frogs can become a problem for many reasons. Tree frogs mostly live in trees but will find their way into homes. Once there, they will hide behind shutters, under siding window frames, siding, rain gutters, overhanging bricks and facia boards away from sunlight in shaded areas are all prime tree frog hiding sites during the day. Tree frogs like these areas and at night they will emerge to feed.

The problem with having tree frogs on your home is that they tend to make a mess. Their droppings will quickly accumulate below where they are nesting. Tree frog droppings look a lot like rat droppings and can easily fool people into believing they have a rodent problem.  While frogs in and of themselves may be harmless, but they often will leave feces and a sticky residue wherever they go.

Collier Pest Control Southwest Florida’s Pest Authority can help with our Frog and Lizard Repellant Treatment.  We can treat all areas around your home or business where tree frogs are roosting, such as: the soffits, eaves, lighting, garage, doors, window sills, pool cage, lanai furniture, and even around plants.  This all natural clear treatment material does not stain.  It repels frogs, toads, and lizards away by releasing a scent certain animals can detect and don’t like. Because this is an all natural treatment, monthly applications should be made to continue keeping your home or business Frog, Toad, and Lizard Free.

If you live in Naples, Bonita Springs, Fort Myers, or anywhere in Beautiful Southwest Florida and are having a Frog, Toad, or Lizard problem, call Collier Pest Control for a full explanation of our Frog and Lizard Repellant Treatment, or on any of our services, or look us up on our web site at collierpestcontrol.com.  Remember Florida does not have to be shared with pests.

TERMITES ASIAN TERMITE CONTROL FROM COLLIER PEST CONTROL NAPLES BONITA SPRINGS FORT MYERS FLORIDA

ASIAN TERMITES

The Asian Subterranean Termite is the second most destructive subterranean termite in the world. Incursions have been recorded in countries in South East Asia, Hawaii, and Florida where populations have established for more than 30 years and damage costs have amounted to billions of dollars.

The two species arrived in South Florida on oceangoing yachts, scientists say, with infestations tending to originate in marinas and inland waterways before spreading into neighborhoods. Unlike Australia, which requires strict inspections to make sure oceangoing pleasure boats don't bring in exotic pests, the United States requires no such screening, allowing boats from the Caribbean and elsewhere to bring termites into South Florida undetected.

Asian Subterranean termites build their nest underground. They socially organize themselves into three groups which include reproductives, soldiers and workers.

The Reproductive’s lay the eggs. Most colonies have one pair of primary reproductive’s; the king and the queen.  A queen can live for about 20 years and lay 1,000 eggs a day. A colony can have about 60,000 to 1 million termites in it.  Only the king and queen have eyes. The rest of the termites are blind and navigate using scent and moisture trails. Kings and queens are usually darker than the rest of the termites in the colony. The vast majority will end up as lunch for lizards, birds and other creatures. But just two of the fertile couples can found a colony that in a few years will produce millions of termites. Although they can be spread quickly by boats, the natural spread of these termites is slow. They tend to fly only a few hundred yards - and at most a half-mile - to establish new colonies. And once they do establish the colony, it takes four or five years for that colony to produce fertile offspring ready to fly off and extend the species' range. The spread of these species found dozens of new infestations that could be attributed to boats. The swift spread through Broward and Palm Beach counties took place via boats, with the first arriving on oceangoing yachts and other boats picking up termites in marinas and spreading them into waterfront neighborhoods.

The Soldiers is tasked to defend the nest from invaders, usually ants and termites from other colonies. The wide range of jaw types and large heads provide means that effectively block narrow termite tunnels against ant entry.  A tunnel-blocking soldier can rebuff attacks from many ants.  Soldiers’ heads are often darker than their bodies. They can exude a white toxic fluid for defense purpose. They also produce a rattling sound, a mechanism used by soldier to warn off nest-mates by banging their head against the walls. You may hear the sound during a quiet night if your house is infested with this species.

The Workers are a milky or cream color. They have smaller, saw-toothed mandibles, which allow them to take small bites of wood and carry building materials. As their name suggests they do most of the work in the colony. They dig tunnels, gather food and care for young. They also feed the king, queen and soldiers, who are unable to feed themselves. Workers and soldiers are sterile.

The Asian Subterranean termites love moisture and like to live in cool, dark, damp and moist places.  They feed on cellulose found in wood, paper products, clothes and trees such as mango, lemon, coconut and cassava etc. These termites spread to places with infested materials or fly around in swarms. They usually fly in large numbers- hundreds to thousands- in the afternoons and are attracted to light. They do not bite people.

As for the future, he said, "Obviously they're going to keep spreading. They're so deeply entrenched. They're subterranean termites, they're hard to get to and they're here to stay forever."

Gary Stanford, an environmental specialist with the Florida Department of Agriculture, which oversees pest-control operators, says the agency recommends that every home have a termite contract that covers subterranean and Drywood termites.

All homes in Florida are subject to a termite infestation.  Professor Phil Koehler of The University of Florida has said, “two thirds of all homes build since 1987 has had termites with five years.”  Because of this all homes should have a yearly termite inspection to prevent costly damage created by unseen termites eating at the wood in your home for years.

If you live in Naples, Bonita Springs, Fort Myers, or anywhere in Southwest Florida and would like more information on termite protection, call our office, 239-455-4300, or look us up on our website at collierpestcontrol.com.  Remember, Florida does not have to be shared with insects.

ANATS ACROBAT ANT CONTROL FROM COLLIER PEST CONTROL NAPLES BONITA SPRINGS FORT MYERS FLORIDA

ACROBAT  ANTS

Acrobat Ants get their name from the habit of holding their abdomens above their thorax when disturbed.  There are several different species of these ants found throughout the United States.  They are not normally found inside homes, but many wander inside form time to time in search of food or when there is moisture damaged wood in a building.

The primary contributing condition involved in Acrobat Ant infestations inside or outside are dead wood and areas of high moisture.  Any water leaks which are present must be corrected.  Clogged gutters can attract Acrobat Ants.  Soffit areas that are poorly ventilated may need additional vents installed to increase ventilation.  Acrobat Ants also may be found in decayed or partially decayed wood beneath stones, in stumps, in hollow cavities, under leaf litter, around door and window frames, wall voids, woodwork, skylights, etc.  These ants sometimes use tree limbs or power lines to enter your home.  In recent years, Acrobat Ants have been found building nests in the foam insulating board, called sheathing, located behind the siding of homes.  Any construction flaw will allow this tiny, .017 inch ant long, light brown to black ant access to your home.  In fact, these ants will nest in wood already damaged by other insects.  In one case, these ants were found trailing along the sidewalk, 100 feet from a tree, to an office building.  These ants then crawled up six floors of the building and entered on each floor.  When Acrobat Ants are allowed to grow large colonies the workers are more aggressive and sting you, or animals, if disturbed.  But, when the Acrobat Ant colony is small the worker ants are timid and don’t usually sting when disturbed.

Acrobat Ants feed on a wide variety of foods including live and dead insects and the sweet honeydew produce by insects such as aphids.  Inside buildings, they will feed on sweets as often as they will feed on foods containing protein.

Eliminating the Acrobat Ant takes a combination of removing the moisture hiding areas where they are nesting and treatment of traditional pest control techniques with injection spraying and baits.

STORED FOOD PEST CONTROL FROM COLLIER PEST CONTROL NAPLES BONITA SPRINGS FORT MYERS FLORIDA

STORED PANTRY & FOOD PRODUCT PEST

Collier Pest Control is your Southwest Florida Pest Authority including Stored Food Product Pests.  There are several different types of Food Product Pests in Southwest Florida.  The most common are flour beetles, saw-toothed grain beetles, cigarette and drug store beetles, weevils, grain moths, Indian and Mediterranean flour moths, and psocids.

Most of the Stored Food Product Pests in Florida can reproduce quickly all year. It is very unsettling to open a brand new package of something just to find it infested with insects.  How did they get into that package?  The answer is that they were in the package when the food product was processed at the factory.  Then when the age, humidity, and temperature of the food product get just right the insects hatch out. From the infested food packages, the pests may spread to other exposed food.

These Food Product Pests are usually found living in dried fruit, spices, flour, bran,  dried vegetables, dried flowers, grains, milled cereal products, dried dog and cat food, nuts, candy, pasta, grits, cake mixes, and other similar processed dried or grain products.

The first step in controlling Food Product Pests is to locate the source of the infestation.  All susceptible foods should be thoroughly inspected and infested items be discarded.  You need to take the time to go through the pantry and inspect those items in question.

Insects in infested foods may be killed by heat or cold if the item is of value and need to be saved.  Invested foods may be placed in an oven at 130 degrees for 30 minutes or into a freezer at 0 degrees for 4 days to kill live insects and their eggs.  If insects are out of the food package and active, you can vacuum or dry wipe up all insects and wash the area with warm soapy water. If insects reappear after you have inspected and discarded infested food items take the time to re-inspect and discard any new infested items and look for the source of the problem.

The presence of Food Product Pests is not an indication of uncleanliness since the infestation of the food product was before you purchased the food product.

TICK CONTROL WITH COLLIER PEST CONTROL NAPLES BONITA SPRINGS FORT MYERS FLORIDA

TICK SERVICE

Collier Pest Control is Southwest Florida’s Pest Control Authority.  We are specialist’s in general household pest and termite control. Our approach to tick control is not just with surface sprays.  Collier Pest Control developed a complete thorough Tick Treatment that treats your complete house and every place your pet is active; all the cracks and crevices, voids, windows and door casings, furniture, baseboards, and rugs.

The Brown Dog Tick is the most common tick here in beautiful Southwest Florida.  The Brown Dog Tick does not vector any disease, such as Lyme disease or Rocky Mountain spotted fever.  Ticks are a serious problem and can cause major health problems if allowed to infest your living area.  Ticks are not an insect and are closely related to the spider.  Adult ticks have 8 legs, insects only have 6 legs.  All ticks are parasitic and feed on the blood of animals.  Most ticks spend the majority of their life on or near the ground waiting for a suitable host to come attach themselves on.  Ticks will climb onto an appropriate object, such as a tall blade of grass, bush, fence post, side of a building to wait for a host to pass by. The Brown Dog Tick can live for as long as 200 days without a blood meal.

The female Brown Dog Tick can lay a mass of 1000 to 3000 eggs. These eggs will hatch in 19 to 60 days into a 6 legged, small, immature seed tick. Within 3 to 6 days it will molt and change into an 8 legged nymph tick.  After a blood meal from a host, this nymph will molt in 12 to 29 days into an adult tick.

If you find a tick attached to you or a family member never just pull it off the skin.  A tick is easily removed by first touching the tick with a warm butter knife or alcohol to get it to remove its head from the skin. Then grab the tick and lift it off the skin.

Don’t be over whelmed with a tick infestation in your home. SCORPION PEST CONTROL FROM COLLIER PEST CONTROL NAPLES BONITA SPRINGS FORT MYERS FLORIDA

SCORPIONS

Collier Pest Control is your Southwest Florida Pest Authority, including Scorpions.  Here in Southwest Florida we mostly see the Common Striped Scorpion.  It has 2 broad dark bands extending the length of the back on a yellowish brown body.  They usually grow to 1 ½ inches and normally live outdoors and only invade homes foraging for food.  They can live 3 to 5 years.

Scorpions are flattened, crab like animals having 10 legs and a fleshy tail.  They have an upturned up stinger at the end of their tail.  There are over 1200 species of scorpions, but only 20 to 30 types are in the United States.  They are unique as they do not lay eggs and their young are born alive.  After they are born, the mother will carry them until their first molt.  Scorpions are most active at night hiding under boards, bark, rubbish, buildings of the ground, debris, under foliage growth, and palm fronds.

Scorpion’s sting!  But, only sting when provoked or disturbed.  The sting of the Common Striped Scorpion is painful but not dangerous to our health except for those persons who exhibit allergic reactions to insect stings.  Normally, strong ammonia will help the pain and icing the sting will keep the swelling down. There have been no deaths from Scorpion stings in Florida.

Scorpions have poor eye sight and being nocturnal and predaceous, they feed on insects, spiders, or small animal wildlife.  They do not stalk their prey, but wait to grab it alive with their pinchers.

Collier Pest Controls can help eliminate any Scorpion problem around your home with our “Collier Complete” pest control service.  We will treat all the cracks and crevices inside your home and broadcast spray the soffits, eaves, mulch beds, flower beds, entry ways, and a 5 to 10 perimeter around your home.   If you remove all areas Scorpions will hide listed above, around your home your will be protected from these silent invaders.
