MIDGES CONTROL FROM COLLIER PEST CONTROL NAPLES BONITA SPRINGS FORT MYERS FLORIDA

MIDGES

The Florida Midge emerge from lakes in astronomical numbers, covering walls of homes, and forming heaps of wispy corpses under outdoor lights.  They are sometimes called blind mosquitoes because when their multitudes are disturbed in their resting places on lake shore sedges, they rise up with a mosquito-like whine and fly clumsily away among the vegetation, as to recognize a good meal when it walks into their back yard.  Actually, Midges do not feed during their short life of a day or two.  Since they do not feed they do not bite as adult mosquitoes.

This is time enough for myriads of them to vanish down the gullets of swallows, dragonflies, and fish.

The larva of the Midge lives in the mud of lakes and low water areas where each constructs a small open-ended tube. Through which they draw a little stream of water from which they remove algae and microscopic debris.  They act as the filter for our lakes and low water areas.  90% of all Midge activity takes place just before sundown.

Control of the Midge is limited to reducing the lights around lakes and low water areas, stocking bodies of water with carp and goldfish, adding insect growth regulators to bodies of water, and light traps around the same bodies of water.

Collier Pest Control is also limited to controlling the source points of the Midge, but we have had very good success in controlling Midges at homes around Southwest Florida.  We can treat your home with a special material in all areas that Midges would rest such as, front foyers, eaves, soffits, windows, doors, lanai areas, pool cages, and the garage.  When Midges rest on areas where we have treated they will be controlled within a few minutes.  It is very effective!

BEE CONTROL FROM COLLIER PEST CONTROL NAPLES BONITA SPRINGS FORT MYERS FLORIDA

THE HONEY BEE

Honey Bees get their name from the sweet yellowish to brownish fluid they make from the nectar of flowers and use as food.  Honey Bees not only provide honey and wax, but as pollinators are of far greater importance.  They are responsible for a large share of insect stings, although many stings blamed on bees are actually done by yellow jackets.  More people die of allergic reaction to Bee stings than of rattle snake bites each year.  Bees can only sting you once.  When stinging them pull away and leave the back half of their abdomen, with the poison sack and the stinger imbedded in your skin.  This action kills s the insect that stung you.  This poison sack can continue to inject poison into your body for a few minutes after the sting.  They are best controlled at night using dusts and contact sprays.  Queen Bees lay as many as 1,500 to 2000 eggs per day, and may live as long as 5 years.  Worker Bees only live 5 to 7 weeks in the summer and shorter during the winter.

Collier Pest Control can control any bee hive or remove any hive that may be a bother to you.  If you have a bee swarm that is a nuisance to you, we can illuminate it for you.

If you live in Naples, Fort Myers, or Southwest Florida call 239-455-4300 Collier Pest Control, Southwest Florida’s Pest Authority, for a full explanation about bees, wasps or on any of our services or look us up on our web site at collierpestcontrol.com.  Remember Florida does not have to be shared with insects.

BUGS IN THE FOOD CONTROL FROM COLLIER PEST CONTROL NAPLES BONITA SPRINGS FORT MYERS FLORIDA

STORED PANTRY & FOOD PRODUCT PEST

Collier Pest Control is your Southwest Florida Pest Authority including Stored Food Product Pests.  There are several different types of Food Product Pests in Southwest Florida.  The most common are flour beetles, saw-toothed grain beetles, cigarette and drug store beetles, weevils, grain moths, Indian and Mediterranean flour moths, and psocids.

Most of the Stored Food Product Pests in Florida can reproduce quickly all year. It is very unsettling to open a brand new package of something just to find it infested with insects.  How did they get into that package?  The answer is that they were in the package when the food product was processed at the factory.  Then when the age, humidity, and temperature of the food product get just right the insects hatch out. From the infested food packages, the pests may spread to other exposed food.

These Food Product Pests are usually found living in dried fruit, spices, flour, bran,  dried vegetables, dried flowers, grains, milled cereal products, dried dog and cat food, nuts, candy, pasta, grits, cake mixes, and other similar processed dried or grain products.

The first step in controlling Food Product Pests is to locate the source of the infestation.  All susceptible foods should be thoroughly inspected and infested items be discarded.  You need to take the time to go through the pantry and inspect those items in question.

Insects in infested foods may be killed by heat or cold if the item is of value and need to be saved.  Invested foods may be placed in an oven at 130 degrees for 30 minutes or into a freezer at 0 degrees for 4 days to kill live insects and their eggs.  If insects are out of the food package and active, you can vacuum or dry wipe up all insects and wash the area with warm soapy water. If insects reappear after you have inspected and discarded infested food items take the time to re-inspect and discard any new infested items and look for the source of the problem.

The presence of Food Product Pests is not an indication of uncleanliness since the infestation of the food product was before you purchased the food product.

If you live in Naples, Fort Myers, or Southwest Florida call 239-455-4300 Collier Pest Control for a free estimate and a complete explanation on any of our services, or look us up on our web site at collierpestcontrol.com.  Don’t let unwanted guests spoil your beautiful Southwest Florida lifestyle.  Remember, Florida does not have to be shared with insects.

These Fig White Flies are hard to see compared to other species of whiteflies.  The body of the adult Fig Whitefly is yellow in color and the wings are white with a faint grey band towards the middle of the wing and a grey longitudinal bar on the inside of the back edge of each  of the front wings.

Ficus hedges and trees are not native to South Florida and these Fig White Flies are quickly spreading northward from Homestead since 2007.  Fortunately, these flies can be controlled.  First, you have to determine if you already have Fig Whitefly.  If not, keep monitoring your trees and hedges for early signs of an infestation, such as; leaves falling off or small gnat-like flies emerging from the foliage.

FIRE ANT CONTROL FOR COLLIER PEST CONTROL NAPLES BONITA SPRINGS FORT MYERS FLORIDA

FIRE ANTS

Ants are among the most successful of all insects and the Fire Ant has developed into a very aggressive member of success.  Not only are they damaging to agriculture but also dangerous to young animals and humans.

There are 4 types of Fire Ants found in the United States.  The original Fire Ant was found in coastal areas of the southern U.S., particularly in Florida.  This ant is reddish brown to dark in color and is 1/16th of an inch long.  The original Fire Ant does not make large dirt mounds in the soil, and is not always aggressive to sting when in contact with animals or human.

The Red Imported Fire Ant is found in coastal plain areas of the southern states, from South Carolina, south along the Atlantic coast into southern Florida, across the southern states into much of the eastern half of Texas. This ant is a touch larger than the Original Fire Ant, reddish brown to dark in color, makes large mounds of dirt in the soil, and is very aggressive to sting when in contact with animals or humans. Large colonies of this ant can have up to 300 to 500,000 workers, which live from 1 to 9 months, can forage over 100 yards from the nest.  Some Red Imported Fire Ant colonies have multiple queen colonies of up to 60 queens that can live up to 7 years. These ants also produce super colonies that have workers from different colonies supporting and tending to more than one colony in the same area.

The Black Imported Fire Ants are only around the northern end of the border between Mississippi and Alabama.  Once quite common in the southern U.S., it has been displaced by competition from the Imported Fire Ant.  The Black Fire Ant has no importance to us in Florida since it is not here.

The fourth and smallest of all Fire Ants is the Tropical Little Fire Ant found in Florida and California.  The Tropical Little Fire Ant is small about 1/15th of an inch long.  This ant is lighter reddish to red in color and lives outside in mulch, logs, under stones, high moisture areas and next to structures.  This ant moves around very slowly and is sensitive to cold, and appears only in the warmest weather.  The Tropical Little Fire Ant is a serious household pest, contaminating food and infesting unlaundered clothing and beds.  All of the fire ant types feed on organic material, body oils, dead insects, food scraps, and even oil products such as grease and silicone.

All fire ants are notorious for their painful, burning sting that results in a pustule of intense itching, which may persist for several days.  Some people have allergic reactions to fire ant stings that range from rashes and swelling to paralysis and death.  Immediate first aid is vital for all fire ant stings.  If a person is exhibiting symptoms of dizziness, nausea, sweating, swelling of affected area, headache, or shortness of breath they should seek medical attention.  If none of these symptoms are present, apply ice and ammonia on the affected area for temporary relief. To prevent secondary infection, keep affected area clean and do not scratch or break pustules.

Keep your lawn an area of recreation for fun and relaxation.  Don’t let Fire Ants take over and spoil your Southwest Florida lifestyle.  Call Collier Pest Control, Southwest Florida’s Pest Authority, to eradicate the fire ants from your lawn with our specially developed technique in fire ant control. Safe effective baiting and residual spraying methods are used to eliminate the workers, stop the queens from producing eggs, and controlling new infestations for a period of up to 90 days.

FLIES HOUSE FLY CONTROL FROM COLLIER PEST CONTROL NAPLES BONITA SPRINGS FORT MYERS FLORIDA

HOUSE FLY

Collier Pest Control is Southwest Florida’s Pest Authority, including the control of the common House Fly.  The House Fly is the most common of all insects.  It is worldwide in distribution and is a pest in homes, barns, poultry houses, food processing plants, dairies, and recreation areas.  The House Fly has a tremendous breeding potential all year in Florida and can produce a generation in less than 2 weeks.  House Fly eggs hatch can be laid in almost any type of  organic material, such as fermenting vegetation, manure, or garbage. House Fly eggs hatch within 24 hours into tiny larva call maggots.  In 3 to 6 days these maggots migrate to drier areas and cocoon themselves just like a butterfly.  A House Fly can complete it’s life cycle (egg, larva, pupa, and adult) in Florida in 6 to 10 days, living a life span of about 30 days.

House Flies digest their food outside their bodies.  They excrete a fluid on their food to digest it and then draw this fluid, with the digested food, up through their sponging sucking mouth parts.  This is why House Flies can vector or spread diseases such a dysentery and diarrhea.  Flies can be a problem here in Southwest Florida all year round, but the strongest activity is from May through July.

Collier Pest Control has many ways to help you combat flies and their annoying problems.  We have put together some items that can offer help with continuing fly problems.  First, try to eliminate excess food sources such as open garbage cans, unused pet food, excess pet excrement, open drain covers, broken sprinkler heads, and uncleaned mops and brooms.  Eliminate any item a fly could use as food.  Second, repair or correct all openings to your home or business a fly could enter suck as broken screens, open doors, non sealing weather stripping, and open construction cracks in the building.

Finally Collier Pest Control can assist you in mechanical fly control.  We can provide you with fly bait for quick easy control, electronic fly traps for inside or outside control, thorough broadcast treatment of insect controlling materials to help give you a quick control, and expert assistance from manufacturers, distributors, and educators.

SNAILS FLORIDA TREE SNAIL CONTROL FORM COLLIER PEST CONTROL NAPLES BONITA SPRINGS FORT MYERS FLORIDA

FLORIDA TREE SNAILS

A number of terrestrial snails occur in Florida. Snails are important in the conversion of plant matter (often in the form of algae, fungi, or plant detritus) into animal material. Thus, they are important food for some forms of wildlife that are carnivorous or omnivorous. And, of course, sometimes humans eat snails.

A number of species are known from Central and South America and some Caribbean Islands. The Florida tree snail is a mollusk that lives in a colorful, cone-shaped shell. It grows to two inches in length, on average, but may reach three.   The shell size and thickness vary with location, color variety, food, and time of year.

Upon entering a tropical hardwood hammock in south Florida, The eyes then focus on what appear to be porcelain ornaments hung on the trunks of wild tamarind and Jamaica dogwood. The Florida tree snail inhabits tropical hardwood hammocks in extreme southern mainland Florida, and in the Florida Keys.

The main threat to the Florida tree snail is the loss of habitat.  Its habitat selection is extremely specific as the species prefers smooth barked trees in tropical hardwood hammocks.  Florida tree snails also face the threat of fire ants, which have been known to kill tree snails during their times of hibernation  Tree snails in the Lower Keys face the danger of hurricane storm surge and sea level rise.

The shell is secreted by a part of the body called the mantle, and the shell consists principally of calcium carbonate. Snails secrete an acidic material from the sole of their foot that dissolves calcium in the soil and allows uptake so the shell can be secreted. Calcium carbonate also is deposited in the shell of their eggs. Tree snails are normally found on the ground only during egg-deposition or when dislodged from their perches.

If you live in Naples, Bonita Springs, Fort Myers, or anywhere in Southwest Florida and would like more information on the Florida Tree Snail; call our office or look us up on our website at collierpestcontrol.com.  Remember Florida does not have to be shared with pests.

GLASS SNAKE GLASS LIZARD OR SKINK CONTROL FROM COLLIER PEST CONTROL NAPLES BONITA SPRINGS FORT MYERS FLORIDA

EASTERN GLASS LIZARD

(SKINK)

(ALSO KNOWN AS A GLASS SNAKE)

The Eastern Glass Lizard has no legs and is often referred to as a Glass Snake.  It can be distinguished from snakes by their visible ear openings, eyelids, and small scales on the belly. It is actually a lizard, but it looks of course, like a snake.  The Eastern Glass Lizard lives mostly in the Southeast United States, and throughout Florida.  Being the largest of Florida’s native lizards, it can grow up to about 30 inches long, and they eat mostly insects and spiders.  They spend much of their lives burrowing through soil and piles of leaves in search of insects underground.  This Skink got its name because of its tail. Florida is home to four quite similar-looking legless species know as Glass Lizards.  As with many lizards, if it’s attacked and a predator has it by the tail, it can detach the tail, allowing the rest of the animal to escape and survive.  The tail of the Glass Lizard apparently will break into many pieces, like glass.  The pieces will also move, so that the predator will focus on them, and allow the body of the animal to get away.  Glass Lizards will allow themselves to be approached, but if you try to pick one up, it will thrash around wildly and probably scare you into dropping it.

If you live in Naples, Bonita Springs, Fort Myers, or anywhere in beautiful Southwest Florida and are having a problem with lizards or any other problem pest call, 239-455-4300 Collier Pest Control today for a free estimate and a complete explanation to any of our services, or look us up on our website at collierpestcontrol.com.  Do not let unwanted guests spoil your beautiful Southwest Florida lifestyle.  Remember, Florida does not have to be shared with insects!

TERMITES SUBTERRANEAN TERMITE CONTROL FROM COLLIER PEST CONTROL NAPLES BONITA SPRINGS FORT MYERS FLORIDA

SUBTERRANEAN TERMITES

Subterranean Termites are social insects that live in colonies consisting of many individuals.  The colonies are composed of workers, soldiers, and reproductives.  The workers are very small, 1/8th of an inch, have not wings, are white to cream colored and very numerous.  Soldiers defend the colony against insects, like ants, that can attack the colony.  Soldiers are wingless and white in color with large brown heads.  King and Queen Termites perform the reproductive functions of the colony.  They are dark brown to black in color.

Subterranean Termites, as the name suggests, live in the soil, in most cases.  Subterranean Termites are an important part of our environment.  In a natural setting, this type of termite recycles dead trees back into the soil.  Without the termite, our forests would be littered with dead trees as wood “rot” cannot break the dead trees down fast enough.  The termite sees the wood in your home as just another food source.   If the wood of your home does not contact the soil, they can build mud tunnels or tubes to reach the wood several feet above the ground.   These mud tunnels can extend for 50-60 feet to reach wood and often enter a structure through expansion joints in concrete slabs or where utilities enter the home.  The main portion of the termite colony stays in the ground and the foraging worker termites come into a home through cracks in the concrete, as small as 1/64th of an inch, a dimes width.  Once inside, they will eat the wood and bring it back to the nest in the ground as food to the termites remaining in the colony.

Subterranean termites feed on wood or other items that contain cellulose, such as paper, fiberboard, and some fabrics derived from cotton or plant fibers.  Subterranean Termites are often difficult to detect.  Detection can be from the presence of winged reproductives, mud tubes on the sides of your home, or seeing wood damage.

The control of subterranean termites is often a major expense and like any other household expense should be carefully considered.  An important point to remember is that Subterranean Termites work SLOWLY!  There are many variables when considering how fast or slow a termite colony will damage a home.  A small colony can typically eat six inches of a wooden 2X4 board in one year.  You do not need to rush into an agreement with a firm before you thoroughly investigate what are all your alternatives.

Collier Pest Control, Southwest Florida’s Pest Authority, can control all types of termites for you economically.  Let our experienced termite Inspector come and evaluate if you have a termite problem or some other form of damage.  If it is termites, we can offer to you different types of service to correct the infestation.  Collier Pest Control offers long term protection  with our in ground termite baiting systems if you plan to keep you home, or traditional liquid treatments for a 5 or 7 year protection.

If you live in Naples, Fort Myers, or Southwest Florida and think you may have Termites or want a FREE termite home inspection call 239-455-4300, Collier Pest Control for any of our FREE TERMITE INSPECTION and a complete explanation and free estimate on any of our services, or look us up on our web site at collierpestcontrol.com. ROACHES THE SURINAM COCKROACH CONTROL FROM COLLIER PEST CONTROL NAPLES BONITA SPRNGS FORT MYERS FLORIDA

THE SURINAM COCKROACH

This tropical cockroach usually is not noticed until large numbers have populated an area.  They remain inside cracks and crevices, under leaf litter, and mulch during the day and come out at night to feed upon plants.  Surinam cockroaches are plant feeders and can severely damage plants in greenhouses and atriums.  They also are commonly found in potted plants, planters, and other humid, hot situations outdoors in the Gulf coast states from Florida to Texas.

The Surinam cockroach burrows into the soil to a depth of three to four inches, where they construct a burrow containing nymphs, (adolescents), and females incubating their egg capsules.  These egg capsules produce from 14 to 42 eggs each.  Surinam cockroaches are unique, in that there are NO males of the species found in the United States.  The females reproduce parthenogentically without mating with a male.  Surinam cockroaches are 3/4” to 1” long, are brown in color,  and have a very obvious dark brown to black shield, (the area behind its head), which is called the pronotum.

To control this insect it is critical to remove harborage areas, such as excessive leaf litter, excessive mulch, unneeded landscape timbers, stones, or other objects close to the foundation of your building.  Residual materials should be applied to foundations, plantings, woodpiles, potted plants, mulch and any infested areas.  Barrier treatments can substantially reduce Surinam cockroach populations around your home.

WASP THE CICADA KILLER CONTROL FROM COLLIER PEST CONTROL NAPLES BONITA SPRINGS FORT MYERS FLORIDA

THE CICADA KILLER

The Cicada Killer Wasp gets its name from the fact it hunts and puts a cicada in each of its nests as food for its young (larva).  The Cicada Killer is an ominous looking wasp that flies around homes and business in the spring and early summer being a nuisance.  Many people think this is a very large Yellowjacket.  This large wasp is recognized by measuring about 1 and 5/8 inch long and with a rusty to black color with yellowish markings on its abdomen.  It is also recognized by the large holes it borrows into the ground to lay its eggs.  Typically they use bare ground as nesting sites.  Each Cicada Killer digs a single borrow, then locates a cicada, stings it, and brings the paralyzed cicada back to the burrow.  One or 2 cicadas may be placed in each burrow and an egg is deposited on one of the cicadas.  The wasp larva feeds on the paralyzed cicada.  These large dangerous looking wasps, generally the females will not sing unless handled or stepped on, males will buzz people but cannot sting.  These insects are beneficial by helping control the cicada population.  If the Cicada Killer Wasp become too much of a nuisance, cover as much of the bare ground around your home or business or we can treat the bare ground area with limited effect over the nesting period.

Collier Pest Control is your Southwest Florida Pest Authority, including Scorpions.  Here in Southwest Florida we mostly see the Common Striped Scorpion.  It has 2 broad dark bands extending the length of the back on a yellowish brown body.  They usually grow to 1 ½ inches and normally live outdoors and only invade homes foraging for food.  They can live 3 to 5 years.

Scorpions are flattened, crab like animals having 10 legs and a fleshy tail.  They have an upturned up stinger at the end of their tail.  There are over 1200 species of scorpions, but only 20 to 30 types are in the United States.  They are unique as they do not lay eggs and their young are born alive.  After they are born, the mother will carry them until their first molt.  Scorpions are most active at night hiding under boards, bark, rubbish, buildings of the ground, debris, under foliage growth, and palm fronds.

Scorpion’s sting!  But, only sting when provoked or disturbed.  The sting of the Common Striped Scorpion is painful but not dangerous to our health except for those persons who exhibit allergic reactions to insect stings.  Normally, strong ammonia will help the pain and icing the sting will keep the swelling down. There have been no deaths from Scorpion stings in Florida.

Scorpions have poor eye sight and being nocturnal and predaceous, they feed on insects, spiders, or small animal wildlife.  They do not stalk their prey, but wait to grab it alive with their pinchers.

Collier Pest Controls can help eliminate any Scorpion problem around your home with our “Collier Complete” pest control service.  We will treat all the cracks and crevices inside your home and broadcast spray the soffits, eaves, mulch beds, flower beds, entry ways, and a 5 to 10 perimeter around your home.   If you remove all areas Scorpions will hide listed above, around your home your will be protected from these silent invaders.

BOOKLICE PEST CONTROL FROM COLLIER PEST CONTROL NAPLES BONITA SPRINGS FORT MYERS FLROIDA

BOOKLICE / PSOCIDS

Booklice are very small insects found on books and papers.   They are both winged and wingless and less than a 1/8 of an inch, with chewing mouthparts.  There are more than a 100 species collectively called psocids, including Booklice are a part. The term “lice” is somewhat misleading because none of these insects are parasitic or have 8 legs.  Most of the species are found inside buildings.  The two most commonly found are the common Booklouse and the Deathwatch.  These are often found among books and papers.  They also can be found in stored grain, dried foods, insect collections, furniture, beddings, warm moist areas, leaking water pipes, air conditioning drain pans, windowsills, or damaged roofs.

The control of psocids is directly related to finding the source of the Booklice and the source of the moisture that supports these insects. Infested furniture and bedding or other movable furnishings should be thoroughly cleaned and aired.  All infested foods should be discarded.  All excess moisture areas should be dried, repaired and aired to kill fungi. Insecticides can reduce the population of Booklice for a short length of time.  To completely eliminate psocids you must find the source of moisture supporting the molds and fungi that the Booklice feed on and eliminate it.

RODENTS THE FLORIDA COTTON RAT COLLIER PEST CONTROL NAPLES BONITA SPRINGS FORT MYERS FLORIDA

THE FLORIDA COTTON RAT

The Florida Cotton Rat inhabits most of the southern United States, including most of Florida.  This rat is also known at the Hispid Cotton Rat.  The Florida Cotton Rat prefers to live in dense covered grassy fields, overgrown roadsides, or fencerow vegetation adjacent to cultivated fields.  They also occupy meadows, marshy areas, cactus patches, and weedy ditch banks.  Under the protective cover, the Florida Cotton Rat will have well-defined runways radiating in all direction from the nest site.

This rat is a moderately large, robust rodent with a scaly, sparsely haired tail that is shorter than the combined head and body.  They have relatively large eyes.  The ears are large but almost hidden in the fur.  Distinguishing characteristic is the rough grizzled appearance of the blackish or grayish fur and the rather stiff black guard hairs.  They average 10 inches long including the tail length of 4 inches.  They may be identified as a Norway rat but are smaller in size.

The Florida Cotton Rats are normally herbivores, eating the roots, stems, leaves, and seeds of a wide variety of plants, fruits, berries and nuts.  Cotton rats will cut tall plants off at the base and continue to cut them into shorter sections.  They will also eat insects, the eggs and young of ground-nesting birds and carcasses of dead animals.

These rats are basically nocturnal but will venture out in the daytime and are active year-round.  They do not store food or hibernate.  They are excitable, pugnacious, and aggressive toward mice living in the same fields.  Their nests are a crude mass of dry grass fibers stripped from larger plant stems, placed in shallow surfaces depression, among clumps of coarse grasses, underground in shallow tunnels, or under rocks or logs.  They seldom inter homes or structures.

TOXIC WHAT IS TOXIC INFORMATION FROM COLLIER PEST CONTROL NAPLES BONITA SPRINGS FORT MYERS FLORIDA

WHAT IS TOXIC

Today’s modern convinces include many natural and manmade products to give us a higher standard of living.  When purchasing these products, there is a personal responsibility to pick and choose the product that combines proper safety and environmental protection for the usage needed.  Most people are not aware of the level of toxicity a product has when using it.  The general public also is not aware that the government has given us a standard code of toxicity on which each product is measured.  The level of toxicity must be put on the front of the label on any non food product produced.

The level of toxicity each product measures are found on the label of the product in the form of a SIGNAL WORD.  This SIGNAL WORD indicates how potentially dangerous this product is to humans and other animals.  Knowing the product’s level of toxicity can help you choose wisely and take the proper precautionary measures for handling and using the product.

The SIGNAL WORD must appear in large letters on the front panel of the label, immediately following the statement “Keep Out of the Reach of Children”, which also appears on all product labels.

These are the four levels of toxicity and the SIGNAL WORDS for each level.

DANGERThis word signals that the product is highly toxic.  A taste to a teaspoonful of the undiluted product, taken by mouth, could kill an average sized (175 lb.) adult.  Any product which is highly toxic, orally, dermal or through inhalation, or which causes severe eye and skin burning will be labeled  DANGER.

WARNINGThis word signals that the product is moderately toxic.  As little as a teaspoon to an ounce of the undiluted product, taken by mouth, could kill an average sized (175 lb.) adult.  Any product which is moderately toxic orally, dermal or through inhalation, or causes moderate eye and skin irritation, will be labeled  WARNING.

CAUTIONThis word signals that the product is slightly toxic.  An ounce to a pint of the undiluted product, taken by mouth, could kill an average sized (175 lb.) adult.  Any product which is slightly toxic orally, dermal, or through inhalation, or causes slight eye and skin irritation, will be labeled  CAUTION.

NO SIGNAL WORDThe absence of a signal word indicates that the product is almost non toxic, less than lightly toxic.  Much more than a pint of undiluted product, taken by mouth, would be needed to kill an average sized (175 lb.) adult.  This also indicates that the product has little or no toxicity to dermal or inhalation poisoning and does not have much or any eye or skin irritation.

Check your storage closets, and when you shop look at the labels for the toxic level, SIGNAL WORD, for products that meet your safety and needs.  Collier Pest Control uses the most effective materials available, in the caution level or less, when servicing your home or business.  We take your safety and our environment very seriously in choosing products that is why we offer our Enviro-Care Pest Control Service.  This service offers you complete pest control service without any open pesticide spraying.  Only natural products are placed in cracks and crevices to give you comfort and protection.

If you have concerns or questions on interpreting any product you may be using.  Call, 239-455-4300, Collier Pest Control today for a complete explanation on Signal Words or any of our service, or look us up on our web site at collierpestcontrol.com.  Don’t let unwanted guests spoil your beautiful Southwest Florida lifestyle.  Remember, Florida does not have to shared with insects

TERMITES DRYWOOD SPOT TREATMENT FROM COLLIER PEST CONTROL NAPLES BONITA SPRINGS FORT MYERS FLORIDA

TERMITE SPOT TREATMENT

Sometimes a thorough inspection indicates only a small number of termite infested areas, such as a door casing, windowsill, or piece of furniture.  If the infestation appears to be limited and accessible, a localized (spot) treatment may provide satisfactory results.  Such treatments are less costly and more convenient than whole-structure treatments (tenting).

Wood injection or drill and treat applications have been used since the 1920’s to treat Drywood, and other types of termite infestations which are accessible and detectable.  This is the simplest and most direct method of treatment.

Once an area is determined, the infested wood is drilled with small holes directly into the galleries of the termite colonies.  The number of holes drilled depends on the extent of the infestation.   Controlling materials are then injected into the holes so as to kill the termite galleries.  Dusts, liquids, foams, and baits are now available for this purpose to be injected into the drilled holes to come in contact with the termites in the galleries.

Collier Pest Control offers free termite inspects to determine if you have a termite infestation in your home or building.  Call, 239-455-4300, for more information on termites and how to protect your home against them, or you can look us up on our web site at collierpestcontrol.com, filled with information about all of Florida’s problem pests.  Remember Florida does not have to be shared with insects.

WOODPECKER PROTECTION FROM COLLIER PEST CONTROL NAPLES BONITA SPRINGS FORT MYERS FLORIDA

WOODPECKER PROTECTION

WITH THE FLASHER

There are about 200 species of woodpeckers and many are threatened or endangered due to loss of habitat, with 5 common species here in Southwest Florida.  The Red-Cockaded, the Red-Bellied, the Downy, The Common Yellow Flicker, the large Pileated, and Ivory Billed Woodpecker last seen in196, all of these birds can be seen here in Southwest Florida.

The bill’s chisel-like tip is kept sharp by the pecking action, with long sticky tongues, which possess bristles, aid these birds in grabbing and extracting insects deep within a hole of a tree. To prevent brain damage from the rapid and repeated impacts, woodpeckers have evolved a number of adaptations to protect the brain.  These include small brain size, the orientation of the brain with the skull and the short duration of contact.

The diet of woodpeckers consists mainly of insects and grubs taken from living and dead trees. This also helps to keep trees healthy by keeping them from suffering mass infestations of insects.

It takes woodpeckers about a month to excavate a hole to be used for nesting.  Abandoned holes are used by other birds and mammals.  They may aggressively harass potential competitors.  In residential areas woodpeckers are known to excavate holes in homes and building eaves and décor.  This causes unsightly and costly damage.

Collier Pest Control, Southwest Florida Pest Authority, can keep these nuisance woodpeckers from attacking your home with The Flasher Woodpecker Reflector. The Flasher scares attacking woodpeckers away, keeping your home protected and beautiful.  Just a few decorative Flashers attached to the eaves of your home near the areas where the woodpeckers are attacking will keep them away with no harm to the birds.

If you live in Naples, Bonita Springs, Fort Myers, or anywhere in beautiful Southwest Florida and are being annoyed by attacking woodpeckers, call, 239-455-4300, Southwest Florida Pest Authority for a complete explanation about The Flasher, a woodpecker reflector, or look us up on our web site at collierpestcontrol.com.  Don’t let unwanted pests soil your beautiful Southwest Florida live style.  Remember, Florida doesn’t have to be shared with pests.

ANTS ELONGATED TREE ANT PEST CONTROL FROM COLLIER PEST CONTROL NAPLES BONITA SPRINGS FORT MYERS FLORIDA

ELONGATED TREE ANT

The Elongated Tree Ant is an isolated species of Southern Florida.  This wasp-like in appearance stinging Mexican ant species is about half an inch long and an attractively colored orange and black.

It darts quickly around branches of trees and bushes.  The biggest complaint about the Elongate Tree Ant is that they fall out of tree and other plants onto people and give a painful sting when trapped between clothing and skin.  This species known locally as the “neck biter ant” appeared in Florida in the 1960’s and quickly spread throughout the southern 2/3 of Florida.

The Elongated Tree Ant has single queen small nests that contain few individuals.  The nests are usually located in hollow twigs and dried grasses barely wide enough for two or three ants to pass one another.

Seldom seen inside the Elongated Tree Ant, Collier Pest Control can successfully control this ant with our exclusive outdoor perimeter and lawn treatments.

Call Collier Pest Control today for a full explanation of the Elongated Tree Ant or any of our services.  Don’t let unwanted pests spoil your beautiful Southwest Florida’s lifestyle.  Remember Florida does not have to be shared with insects.

MOLE CONTROL FROM COLLIER PEST CONTROL NAPLES BONITA SPRINGS FORT MYERS FLORIDA

MOLE

LAWN TREATMENT

While you've probably never seen them, you may have seen their tunnels running across your lawn or through your garden beds. We're talking about moles.  Moles are notorious for the damage they cause to sod nurseries, golf courses, parks, cemeteries, residential lawns, ornamental planting beds and gardens as a result of their digging and tunneling in search of turf grass insects and earthworms upon which to feed. These small mammals definitely frustrate some gardeners, but the good news is they usually don't cause any lasting damage. Moles live in underground runways and are seldom seen above the ground. In heavily infested areas, these tunnels form a vast network of interconnecting highways. The main runways are often 5 to 8 inches deep, but can vary from 2 to 20 inches underground. The chambers created are about the size of a quart jar. Moles dig runways to search for food, provide protection from predators and create space for resting and breeding.

Moles prefer loose, moist soil (sandy loam is ideal) where digging is easy and food plentiful. In fact, they're often considered beneficial creatures because they feed on white grubs, mole crickets, and other pest insects that might otherwise harm your plants. Moles are not rodents, but members of the order Insectivora. All moles are characterized by enlarged forefeet with long claws, stout necks and powerful shoulders that make them capable burrowers. Depending on the species, moles are usually 4 to 8 inches long, with long snouts (1/2 inch) and velvety fur.

Moles are primarily carnivores. Their diets consist mainly of earthworms, grubs, beetles and insect larvae they find in the soil. Moles have hearty appetites, consuming 60%-80% of their body weight each day. A single mole eats about 40 pounds of food each year.

Moles are common in Southwest Florida, although if you have Moles running through your landscape, you need Collier Pest Control, Southwest Florida’s Pest Control Authority.  We have a Mole Lawn Treatment that will run off Moles from any lawn.  If you live in Naples, Bonita Springs, Fort Myers, or anywhere in beautiful Southwest Florida and would like a full explanation on our Mole Lawn Treatment or any of our services, call our office or look us up on our website at collierpestcontrol.com  Remember Florida does not have to be shared with pests.

FLYS MOTH FLY PEST CONTROL FROM COLLIER PEST CONTROL NAPLES BONITA SPRINGS FORT MYERS FLORIDA

MOTH FLYS

An annoying and troublesome pest that concerns numerous homeowners is the moth fly, also commonly known as the drain fly, filter fly, or sewage fly. Moth flies are frequently found indoors on windows, sinks and walls. The source of the fly infestation is generally from sinks and floor drains, or from nearby sewage plants or waste disposal areas. Polluted waters and wet organic materials are preferred breeding areas of the fly.

The adult fly is about one-tenth inch long (about one-third the size of a housefly). It has a dark gray body and lighter colored wings. The body and wings are densely covered with long hairs which give the body a fuzzy or hairy appearance, hence the name “moth fly”.

Eggs are deposited throughout the spring and summer in moist, decomposing organic materials. The gelatinous organic deposits, which accumulate in drains, provide an ideal breeding site. Eggs hatch into the maggots, which feed in this organic matter. Under favorable conditions, maggots mature in about two weeks and form a hard shell (puparium) within which the pupa forms and from which the adult fly emerges.

Control varies with the origin of the moth fly infestation. The most economical and sanitary way is to remove the organic material in which they breed. This requires cleaning sinks, drain pipes, and traps with a stiff wire brush or by steam. Several new products are now available that contain either bacteria or enzymes which breakdown the gelatinous scum in drains. They are applied as either a pour around the drain lip or injected as foam. Most pest management companies provide this as a service. To determine which drain is infested, place a jar over the outlet or tape a plastic bag over the opening of the overflow outlet. Check the container at intervals for adult flies.

If you live in Naples, Fort Myers, or Southwest Florida call 239-455-4300 Collier Pest Control, Southwest Florida’s Pest Authority, for a free estimate and a complete explanation on any of our services, or look us up on our web site at collierpestcontrol.com.  Don’t let unwanted guests spoil your beautiful Southwest Florida lifestyle.  Remember, Florida does not have to be shared with insects!

WASPS THE MUDD DOBBER WASP PEST CONTROL FROM COLLIER PEST CONTROL NAPLES BONITA SPRINGS FORT MYERS FLORIDA

THE MUDD DOBBER WASP

The Mudd Dobber Wasp gets its name from the fact that they construct their next of mud.  They are typically a nuisance pest, building their mud nests on sheltered sites like eaves, porch ceilings, garages, sheds, barns, open attic, or any protected wall or structure.  The Mudd Dobber Wasp is recognized by its ½ to 1 inch very slender metallic black body.  The nest looks like a clump of mud stuck on to the side of a structure and as the young adult Mudd Dobbers emerge from the nest they leave small holes in the nest, showing the nest is old or inactive. The Mudd Dobber Wasp does not defend their nests, and only rarely sting.  These wasps are beneficial insects and help control spiders.  If control is needed, first treat and control the female Mudd Dobber Wasp and then remove the nest from the structure with a putty knife or scraper.  Activity can be discouraged in a given area by an application of a microencapsulated material on the structure.

SNAILS GIANT AFRICAN LAND SNAIL PEST CONTROL WITH COLLIER PEST CONTROL NAPLES BONTIA SPRINGS FORT MYERS FLORIDA

GIANT AFRICAN LAND SNAILS

They're huge and they move around and look like they're looking at you.South Florida is fighting a growing infestation of one of the world's most destructive invasive species: the Giant African Land Snail, which can grow as big as a rat and gnaw through stucco and plaster. Florida is used to strange creatures, but the discovery of this non-native animal, a giant snail from East Africa, has got local officials really worried.  It is thought to have originated in East Africa, but has since spread through many countries in Southeast Asia and islands in the Pacific Ocean, including the Hawaiian Islands. More recently, this mollusc gained access to South America (Brazil) and the Caribbean islands of Martinique, Guadeloupe, Saint Lucia, Barbados and Saint Martin/Saint Maarten. In 1966 it was found in Miami-Dade County of southern Florida.

The snails attack pretty much anything that's in their path. Each snail can live as long as nine years. In a typical year, every mated adult lays about 1,200 eggs. Giant African Land Snail grows to a length of nearly 8 inches (20 cm) and a diameter of 5 inches (13 cm). It is conical in shape, tapering to a distinct point at one end, but rounded at the other. Although varied in appearance, this snail typically is light brown, with dark brown stripes

This creature is a pest in homes because of their fondness for stucco, devoured for the calcium content they need for their shells. The Giant African Land Snail is most abundant in unnatural (disturbed) areas such as gardens. Typically, they have a daytime resting site and then wander out at night to feed. Adults often return to their resting site in the morning, but immature snails are less likely to do so. They normally seek shaded, sheltered resting locations with high humidity, but can climb trees and walls to rest.

Snails are hermaphrodites, which means that they contain both female and male reproductive organs. Upon hatching, young snails remaining in the soil for 1-2 weeks before digging their way to the surface and feeding on decaying plant matter (detritus) and suitable living plants. These Giant African Land Snails are active over a temperature range of about 48-90°F (9-32°C), but can survive both lower and higher temperatures, sometimes by burrowing into the soil

Snails favor high humidity. Therefore, elimination of mulch, ground cover and other dense vegetation, wood and stones will deny them a moist, sheltering environment. Reducing the amount of irrigation may similarly deny them the moist environment they prefer.

Snails are susceptible to traps.  Giant African snail seems to be particularly attracted to banana and papaya fruit, so these can be used as baits to attract them.

Snails often are large enough to be seen easily, so they can be collected by hand. It is important to wear gloves or to use an implement to pick up the snails as some snails can carry diseases transmitted to humans by touch.  The Giant African Land Snail also has proven to be injurious by transmitting disease organisms to plants and animals, including humans. It can serve as an intermediate host for rat lungworm, which can cause meningoencephalitis in humans, although no such cases have yet been identified in the United States.  If you do collect snails, you can kill them by sealing them in a plastic bag and then placing the bag in a freezer overnight.

If you live in Naples, Bonita Springs, Fort Myers, or anywhere in Southwest Florida and have a problem with Giant African Snails or smaller Florida Brown Snails call Collier Pest Control, 239-455-4300, for a full explanation on our Snail Control Treatment or look us up on our website at collierpestcontrol.com for all our services and information on most of Florida’s problem pests.  Remember Florida does not have to be shared with pests.

SMALL BUSINESS INTERNET MARKETING SUCCESS WITH ONFASTDOTCOM

OnFast.Com is an internet marketing program for small business to get a broad base internet exposure for your business simply and inexpensively.

Collier Pest Control has used OnFast.Com since May 4th, 2011to promote our services on the internet.  OnFast.com set up for us a Facebook Business account, a Twitter account, and a Blog account that I can send our information to the internet I would like to promote.

How I use OnFast.Com is to copy and paste problem pest information sheets that we offer to our customers that educate them to our services and Florida’s problem pests.  I post 4 pest information sheets daily on a very simple template previously set up on the OnFast.Com program.  I then pick a day and time I wish the information to be available and click on a send Icon and these postings go to the Facebook Business Account, Twitter Account, Blog Account, and a link to our web site.  By doing these information postings about our business and services 2 things happen, first many people from all over the world see our information and comment on it through our web site, second and most important fact is that the postings exposure us to the servers on Google, Bing, Yahoo, Ask, and others  to see new and fresh information daily on all of these accounts and after continued daily postings over a long period of time, your web site information is pushed to the first page on the organic listings of the topic a potential customer is looking for.

WHITE FLY SPIRALING WHITE FLY CONTROL WITH COLLIER PEST CONTROL NAPLES BONITA SPRINGS FOR MYERS FLORIDA

Rugose Spiraling White Fly

The Rugose Spiraling Whitefly originated in Central America.  This is not the same whitefly that is currently causing defoliation and branch dieback of ficus in South Florida.  These whiteflies are small winged insects.  They typically feed on the underside of leaves with their needle-like mouthparts.  Whiteflies can seriously injure host plants by sucking nutrients from the plant causing wilting, yellowing, stunting, leaf drop, or even death.

The Rugose Spiraling Whitefly has a very broad host range from palms to woody ornamentals and fruits.  It has been seen on gumbo limbo, black olive, copperleaf, broadleaf arrowhead, Brazilian pepper, wax myrtle, live oak, mango, and several palms.

The adults congregate on the undersides of the leaves to feed and reproduce.  The female lays here eggs in a spiral pattern on the leaves and also deposits a white, waxy substance on the eggs.  The crawler stage hatches from the eggs and crawls around before it starts to feed with its “needle-like” mouthparts.  This stage is very small and difficult to see.

The most noticeable symptoms of an infestation of this whitefly are the abundance of white, waxy material covering the leaves and also excessive black sooty mold.  The actual effect of an infestation of Rugose Spiraling Whitefly on the health of a plant is unknown; however, whiteflies in general can cause plant decline, defoliation and branch dieback.

Monitor plants for early signs of an infestation.  Small potted plants can be washed off with water.  Larger plants can be controlled with horticultural oil or insecticidal soap or most likely will need an insecticide spraying and root drenching by a professional lawn pest control company to control these whiteflies.  They will use a systemic insecticide product that can be applied directly to the infested plant or the soil.

Collier Pest Control, Southwest Florida’s Pest Authority, will treat each infected tree with the appropriate materials by root feeding and by direct contact.  These materials will protect each tree for a period of 6 months after application.

If you suspect a problem with the Rugose Spiraling Whitefly or any other insect call our office, 239-455-4300, for a complete explanation on any of our services, or look us up on our web site at collierpestcontrol.com Remember Florida does not have to be shared with insects.

PALMETTO BUGS IN FLORIDA CONTROLLED WITH COLLIER PEST CONTROL NAPLES BONITA SPRINGS FORT MYERS FLORIDA

THE FLORIDA PALMETTO BUG

Collier Pest Control is your Southwest Florida Pest Authority, including the famous Florida Palmetto Bug.  This Famous Florida Palmetto Bug is one of Florida’s best legions.  It hides in closets, under appliances, in dressers draws or under your bed just waiting to run out at you!  This famous bug is known to attack by fling right for you!  This monster of the dark is also known to breed in numbers to high to count!

The real facts are there is no such thing as a Palmetto Bug.  The American cockroach is the first to be labeled a Palmetto Bug.  The American Roach is the largest of the common roach species at about 1 ½ inches long, reddish brown in color, with fully developed wings.  This large bug seldom flies but is capable of gliding long distances.  Each female American Roach can develop an egg capsule of 15 eggs every week.

Another villain, recently, to be named the Palmetto Bug is the Australian Cockroach.  This roach is similar in appearance, size, and color.  This startling pest has distinguished yellow military type lieutenant strips along the outer front of either wing. This strong flier has a prominent bat shaped dark spot in the center of the pronotum, the area just behind the head.  This Australian Roach can develop an egg capsule with 15 eggs every 10 days.

Both the American and the Australian Roach are primary outside pests.  During periods of cold, extreme hot and dry weather, or excessive rainfall they will try to enter buildings foraging for food.  Both are found living outdoors in landscape, tree trucks, under rocks, around drainpipes, and any place moisture and shelter will protect them.

Collier Pest Control can control these pests with our “Collier Complete” pest control service.  This service thoroughly treats all the cracks and crevices the inside of your home and completes the service with a broadcast spraying of the eaves, soffits, flowerbeds, entry ways, and 5 to 10 feet around your home.

LIZARDS THE BROWN ANOLE CONTROL WITH COLLIER PEST CONTROL NAPLES BONITA SPRINGS FORT MYERS FLORIDA

BROWN ANOLE

The Brown Anole is similar looking but more abundant than the Green Anole.  It was accidentally introduced from the West Indies. The brown anole is native to Cuba and the Bahamas, it was first observed in the Florida Keys in 1887. It arrived in the major seaports of South Florida during the 1940s and had become firmly established in most large urbanized areas south of Gainesville by 1980. This species thrives in disturbed habitats and ornamental plantings but can potentially inhabit almost any inland or coastal habitat in Florida. It is apparently the most abundant anole over much of the southern half of peninsular Florida, and populations now occur in every county in peninsular Florida.  Cold winters reduce these northern populations but enough individuals usually survive to maintain viable populations.  This exotic species varies from yellowish tan to brown in color, and is never green.  The Brown Anole has a more blunt snout than the Green Anole.  Like their green cousins, male Brown anoles use a throat fan for marking territory or attracting mates, their fan is bright red. Some experimental evidence suggest that the brown anole is primarily responsible for reduced numbers of green anoles, particularly in human-altered habitats where adult male brown anoles sometimes prey upon smaller green anoles. Brown Anoles are often seen on the walls of buildings, rocks and logs.  When threatened, they flee to the ground to hide, but will dash rapidly forward to grab their food.  The diet of Brown Anoles may include ants, roaches, spiders, beetles, and other small prey.
