WHITE FLY SPIRALING WHITEFLY ON TREES PEST CONTROL EXTERMINATOR NAPLES BONITA SPRINGS FORT MYERS FLORIDA

Rugose Spiraling Whitefly

The Rugose Spiraling Whitefly originated in Central America.  This is not the same whitefly that is currently causing defoliation and branch dieback of ficus in South Florida.  These whiteflies are small winged insects.  They typically feed on the underside of leaves with their needle-like mouthparts.  Whiteflies can seriously injure host plants by sucking nutrients from the plant causing wilting, yellowing, stunting, leaf drop, or even death.

The Rugose Spiraling Whitefly has a very broad host range from palms to woody ornamentals and fruits.  It has been seen on gumbo limbo, black olive, copperleaf, broadleaf arrowhead, Brazilian pepper, wax myrtle, live oak, mango, and several palms.

The adults congregate on the undersides of the leaves to feed and reproduce.  The female lays here eggs in a spiral pattern on the leaves and also deposits a white, waxy substance on the eggs.  The crawler stage hatches from the eggs and crawls around before it starts to feed with its “needle-like” mouthparts.  This stage is very small and difficult to see.

The most noticeable symptoms of an infestation of this whitefly is the abundance of white, waxy material covering the leaves and also excessive black sooty mold.  The actual effect of an infestation of Rugose Spiraling Whitefly on the health of a plant is unknown; however, whiteflies in general can cause plant decline, defoliation and branch dieback.

Monitor plants for early signs of an infestation.  Small potted plants can be washed off with water.  Larger plants can be controlled with horticultural oil or insecticidal soap or most likely will need an insecticide spraying and root drenching by a professional lawn pest control company to control these whiteflies.  They will use a systemic insecticide product that can be applied directly to the infested plant or the soil.

Collier Pest Control, Southwest Florida’s Pest Authority, will treat each infected tree with the appropriate materials by root feeding and by direct contact.  These materials will protect each tree for a period of 6 months after application.

If you suspect a problem with the Rugose Spiraling Whitefly or any other insect call our office, 239-455-4300, for a complete explanation on any of our services, or look us up on our web site at collierpestcontrol.com Remember Florida does not have to be shared with insects.

CATERPILLARS TENT CATERPILLARS PEST CONTROL EXTERMINATOR NAPLES BONITA SPRINGS FORT MYERS FLORIDA

TENT CATERPILLARS

While not a common critter found in this area, the Eastern Tent Caterpillar occasionally is found on some Florida trees.   They can thrive on several kinds of deciduous trees, but they seem to prefer wild cherry, apple and crabapple.  Eastern tent caterpillar populations fluctuate from year to year, with outbreaks occurring every several years. Defoliation of trees, building of unsightly silken nests in trees, and wandering caterpillars crawling over plants, walkways, and roads cause this insect to be a pest in the late spring and early summer. While tent caterpillars can nearly defoliate a tree when numerous, the tree will usually recover and put out a new crop of leaves.

Trees known to support this creature include several Rose family relatives that are temperate fruit trees: cherry, peach, pear, and plum.  Other plants known to host tent caterpillars include the hawthorn, maple, oak, beech and poplar, especially if found growing next to the preferred host plants. Tent Caterpillars have a light blue head with mottled black brown body and yellowish-white keyhole spots on their back bordered by pale blue lines, with sparse white hairs.  Tent Caterpillars will be in a clump of webbing on tree limbs that is filled with masses of these caterpillars. Caterpillars can be active for several weeks and are fully grown - about 2" long - in four to six weeks. Adult moths lay eggs in webs that are found in the crotch of tree limbs.  The eggs hatch in spring, and then begin their feeding frenzy.

Adult tent caterpillar moths are brown and yellowish with two diagonal markings on the front wings. Wingspreads are about 1 inch. These moths are attracted to lights and are sometimes very abundant. Tent caterpillar moths live for only a few days, during which they mate and lay eggs. Adults do not feed. Each species of tent caterpillar has only one generation per year.

If you live in Naples, Bonita Springs, Fort  Myers, or anywhere in Southwest Florida and are suffering from unsightly Tent Caterpillars and would like more information on these damaging pests, call our office, 239-455-4300, or look us up on our website at collierpestcontrol.com. Remember Florida does not have to be shared with pests.

FLIES MOTH FLY PEST CONTROL EXTERMINATOR NAPLES BONITA SPRINGS FORT MYERS FLORIDA

MOTH FLYS

An annoying and troublesome pest that concerns numerous homeowners is the moth fly, also commonly known as the drain fly, filter fly, or sewage fly. Moth flies are frequently found indoors on windows, sinks and walls. The source of the fly infestation is generally from sinks and floor drains, or from nearby sewage plants or waste disposal areas. Polluted waters and wet organic materials are preferred breeding areas of the fly.

The adult fly is about one-tenth inch long (about one-third the size of a housefly). It has a dark gray body and lighter colored wings. The body and wings are densely covered with long hairs which give the body a fuzzy or hairy appearance, hence the name “moth fly”.

Eggs are deposited throughout the spring and summer in moist, decomposing organic materials. The gelatinous organic deposits, which accumulate in drains, provide an ideal breeding site. Eggs hatch into the maggots, which feed in this organic matter. Under favorable conditions, maggots mature in about two weeks and form a hard shell (puparium) within which the pupa forms and from which the adult fly emerges.

Control varies with the origin of the moth fly infestation. The most economical and sanitary way is to remove the organic material in which they breed. This requires cleaning sinks, drain pipes, and traps with a stiff wire brush or by steam. Several new products are now available that contain either bacteria or enzymes which breakdown the gelatinous scum in drains. They are applied as either a pour around the drain lip or injected as foam. Most pest management companies provide this as a service. To determine which drain is infested, place a jar over the outlet or tape a plastic bag over the opening of the overflow outlet. Check the container at intervals for adult flies.

LAWN BRAHMINY BLIND SNAKES PEST CONTROL EXTERMINATOR NAPLES BONITA SPRINGS FORT MYERS FLORIDA

BRAHMINY BLIND SNAKE

Two things that can freak some people out more than any other are snakes and worms.  The Brahminy Blind Snake has the dual misfortune of being a snake and looking like a worm.  The Brahminy Blind Snakes look somewhat like an earthworm.  The adult is shiny and dark brown to grayish black in color with a somewhat lighter lower surface. But, if you look carefully you will see that earthworms are segmented with rings around their body and the Brahminy Blind Snake is not segmented and have a smooth slick body.

The Brahminy Blind Snake originally lived in Southeastern Asia.  With expansion of worldwide markets, sellers of greenhouse materials have carried this snake to other tropical and subtropical parts of the world, including Florida and Hawaii.  It was once a myth that there are no snakes in Hawaii.  Perhaps this was true in the past, but not since the Brahminy Blind Snake was introduced to these islands somewhere in the 1980’s. In Florida this snake is found from the Florida Keys north to Lake Okeechobee, which includes all of Southwest Florida.  They are also found in St. Petersburg and around Gainesville.

Adult Brahminy Blind Snakes are small and thin, averaging between 2 ½ to 6 ½ inches in length.  The head and tail-tip look much the same, with no narrowing of the neck.  The tiny eyes are covered with translucent scales, rendering these snakes almost entirely blind.  They cannot form images, but are still capable of registering light intensity.  This tropical/subtropical snake lives outside in the soil, plant litter, and rotting woody materials in areas that are warm enough o support it.  Here in Southwest Florida this snake can be found in garden, flower beds, potted plants, and out in the lawn under the thatch built up by years of mowing.  This snake feeds on the eggs, larva, and pupae of ants and termites in the areas where they live. Another interesting fact about the Brahminy Blind Snake it can lay eggs or can bear their young alive.  All of these snakes are female and reproduce unisexally.  One Brahminy Blind Snake introduced into your area can then infest your lawn and flower beds within a short period of time.

Because the Brahminy Blind Snake is not an insect pest, they should not be treated with insecticide.  The most effective way to rid the home of Brahminy Blind Snakes is to just pick them up and remove them from the home.  If left alone inside a home, they cannot survive for long.  These snakes must live in soil and are found many times living in interior potted plants.  If this becomes a recurring problem the homeowner may wish to move any interior potted plants along with their soil outside.  By moving their home, you remove the snakes.

If you live in Naples, Fort Myers, or anywhere in Southwest Florida and would like more information on the Brahminy Blind Snake call 239-455-4300, Collier Pest Control Southwest Florida’s Pest Authority, for a free explanation on this or any of our services, or look us up on our web site at collierpestcontrol.com.  Don’t let unwanted pests spoil your beautiful Southwest Florida lifestyle.  Remember, Florida does not have to be shared with problem pests.

ROACHES THE AMERICAN COCKROACH PEST CONTROL EXTERMINATOR NAPLES BONITA SPRINGS FORT MYERS FLORIDA

THE AMERICAN COCKROACH

The American Cockroach is one of the larger roaches growing to the length of about 1 ½ inches.  It is identified by an auburn to brown color with a white ring around its pronotum (that the shield looking area behind the head) and well developed winds with rounded tips, but rarely fly.  They can open their wings and glide for a considerable distance.  This is the first monster of the night to be called a Palmetto bug, mostly because it is large and lives outside.

Here in Southwest Florida the American Cockroach is abundant in alleyways, yards, hollows of trees, and all types palm trees.  They are also found in sewer drains and around manhole covers.  The American Cockroach prefers moist shady areas to live and feed.  They feed upon a variety of foods of decaying organic matter, book bindings, glue, soap, clothing, paper, sweets, sugar, syrup, fruit, and vegetables, and when their environment puts stress on them will even eat their own.

The female American cockroach produces an egg capsule containing 15 eggs as fast as every 7 days.  There is no known chemical that the American Cockroach has resistance to.  A regular Collier Complete treatment including a regular perimeter power spraying will control most American Cockroach problems

TERMITES HOW CAN YOU TELL IF YOU HAVE TERMITES PEST CONTROL EXTERMINATOR FORT MYERS NAPLES BONITA SPRINGS FLORIDA

GOT TERMITES ??

How can you tell? It is very difficult. Termites, by their very nature, remain hidden.  They avoid open areas and remain buried deep in the wood that they are eating.  Often, they are noticed only AFTER damage has been done to the structure.  Consider this:

ONE IN THREE HOMES THAT SHOW NO SIGNS OF TERMITES                                    HAVE ACTIVITY WITHIN TWO FEET OF THE FOUNDATION!

TWO OF THREE HOMES BUILT SINCE 1987 WILL HAVE

A TERMITE INFESTATION WITHIN FIVE YEARS

IN MULTIPLE BUILDING SITUATIONS, EVERY BUILDING

WAS BUILT THE SAME, USING THE SAME TECHNIQUES AND                                    MATERIALS. WHEN TERMITE PROTECTION FAILS IN ONE                                          BUILDING, IT IS ONLY A MATTER OF TIME BEFORE THE

                        REST WILL FAIL ALSO.

Collier Pest Control now offers

a diagnostic tool to help answer the question,

                     “Do we have termites?”

We will install 8-10 termite monitors around each building.  In 90 days, we will check each monitor, and report to you the location of any monitors that have termite activity.  This will help show you, if and where you may have termite activity close to your foundation making your home a high risk account.

WOODPECKER PROTECTION WITH THE FLASHER COLLIER PEST CONTROL EXTERMINATOR FORT MYERS NAPLES BONITA SPRINGS FLORIDA

WOODPECKER PROTECTION

WITH THE FLASHER

There are about 200 species of woodpeckers and many are threatened or endangered due to loss of habitat, with 5 common species here in Southwest Florida.  The Red-Cockaded, the Red-Bellied, the Downy, The Common Yellow Flicker, the large Pileated, and Ivory Billed Woodpecker last seen in196, all of these birds can be seen here in Southwest Florida.

The bill’s chisel-like tip is kept sharp by the pecking action, with long sticky tongues, which possess bristles, aid these birds in grabbing and extracting insects deep within a hole of a tree. To prevent brain damage from the rapid and repeated impacts, woodpeckers have evolved a number of adaptations to protect the brain.  These include small brain size, the orientation of the brain with the skull and the short duration of contact.

The diet of woodpeckers consists mainly of insects and grubs taken from living and dead trees. This also helps to keep trees healthy by keeping them from suffering mass infestations of insects.

It takes woodpeckers about a month to excavate a hole to be used for nesting.  Abandoned holes are used by other birds and mammals.  They may aggressively harass potential competitors.  In residential areas woodpeckers are known to excavate holes in homes and building eaves and décor.  This causes unsightly and costly damage.

Collier Pest Control, Southwest Florida Pest Authority, can keep these nuisance woodpeckers from attacking your home with The Flasher Woodpecker Reflector. The Flasher scares attacking woodpeckers away, keeping your home protected and beautiful.  Just a few decorative Flashers attached to the eaves of your home near the areas where the woodpeckers are attacking will keep them away with no harm to the birds.

If you live in Naples, Bonita Springs, Fort Myers, or anywhere in beautiful Southwest Florida and are being annoyed by attacking woodpeckers, call, 239-455-4300, Southwest Florida Pest Authority for a complete explanation about The Flasher, a woodpecker reflector, or look us up on our web site at collierpestcontrol.com.  Don’t let unwanted pests soil your beautiful Southwest Florida live style.  Remember, Florida doesn’t have to be shared with pests.

TOXIC WHAT IS TOXIC PEST CONTROL EXTERMINATOR FORT MYERS NAPLES BONITA SPRINGS FLORIDA

WHAT IS TOXIC

Today’s modern convinces include many natural and manmade products to give us a higher standard of living.  When purchasing these products, there is a personal responsibility to pick and choose the product that combines proper safety and environmental protection for the usage needed.  Most people are not aware of the level of toxicity a product has when using it.  The general public also is not aware that the government has given us a standard code of toxicity on which each product is measured.  The level of toxicity must be put on the front of the label on any non food product produced.

The level of toxicity each product measures are found on the label of the product in the form of a SIGNAL WORD.  This SIGNAL WORD indicates how potentially dangerous this product is to humans and other animals.  Knowing the product’s level of toxicity can help you choose wisely and take the proper precautionary measures for handling and using the product.

The SIGNAL WORD must appear in large letters on the front panel of the label, immediately following the statement “Keep Out of the Reach of Children”, which also appears on all product labels.

These are the four levels of toxicity and the SIGNAL WORDS for each level.

DANGER      This word signals that the product is highly toxic.  A taste to a teaspoonful of the undiluted product, taken by mouth, could kill an average sized (175 lb.) adult.  Any product which is highly toxic, orally, dermal or through inhalation, or which causes severe eye and skin burning will be labeled  DANGER.

WARNING    This word signals that the product is moderately toxic.  As little as a teaspoon to an ounce of the undiluted product, taken by mouth, could kill an average sized (175 lb.) adult.  Any product which is moderately toxic orally, dermal or through inhalation, or causes moderate eye and skin irritation, will be labeled WARNING.

CAUTION     This word signals that the product is slightly toxic.  An ounce to a pint of the undiluted product, taken by mouth, could kill an average sized (175 lb.) adult.  Any product which is slightly toxic orally, dermal, or through inhalation, or causes slight eye and skin irritation, will be labeled  CAUTION.

NO SIGNAL WORD            The absence of a signal word indicates that the product is almost non toxic, less than lightly toxic.  Much more than a pint of undiluted product, taken by mouth, would be needed to kill an average sized (175 lb.) adult.  This also indicates that the product has little or no toxicity to dermal or inhalation poisoning and does not have much or any eye or skin irritation.

Check your storage closets, and when you shop look at the labels for the toxic level, SIGNAL WORD, for products that meet your safety and needs.  Collier Pest Control uses the most effective materials available, in the caution level or less, when servicing your home or business.  We take your safety and our environment very seriously in choosing products that is why we offer our Enviro-Care Pest Control Service.  This service offers you complete pest control service without any open pesticide spraying.  Only natural products are placed in cracks and crevices to give you comfort and protection.

ANTS BIG HEAD ANTS PEST CONTROL EXTERMINATOR FORT MYERS NAPLES BONITA SPRINGS FLORIDA

BIG HEADED ANTS

The Big Headed Ant is often misidentified and confused with either a pharaoh ant or a fire ant worker.  All of these ants have 2 nodes between their abdomen and thorax, are yellow to reddish brown in color and have a three section club antenna.  The Big Headed Ant has two distinct sizes of workers. A major worker, is a soldier, defends the colony and a minor worker forages for the colony.  The major workers have a very large head in proportion to their bodies which gives them the name Big Headed Ants.  The minor workers look similar to other types of ants except for the antennas which have 12 segments.  The first segment, called the scape, of the antenna only reaches about halfway up the head.  Big Headed Ants have a stinger like many other ants, but it may not be extended and visible at all times.

These ants have multiple queens and are more common as a structural pest in warm regions, such as here in Southwest Florida.  They generally are only an occasional, unwanted invader primarily living outdoors.

Big Headed Ants usually nest in the soil, in protected location under rocks, logs, firewood, patio blocks, landscape timbers, and various types of debris.  Here in Southwest Florida, they rarely nest in the soil and prefer the crack and voids within tree

bark, fences, and walls of your home.  They also form huge, extended colonies called “Super Colonies”.  New colonies are primarily formed by mid-summer flights, however budding (splitting) may occur with the large multi-queen colonies.  This ant may form large bone piles of dead colony member along foundations, baseboards, and under carpeting.

Big Headed Ants feed upon live and dead insects, seed and honeydew produced by aphids, mealybugs, and scale insects.  Once these ants get inside a home they prefer protein rich foods such as meats and peanut butter but will also feed upon sweets and fruits.

Getting rid of the Big Headed Ant is best accomplished by locating and eliminating the colonies found in and around the structure.  If the Big Headed Ant colonies cannot be located, bait can be placed in areas where foraging ants can find the bait.  However, the results may be less than satisfactory.

If you have battled these ant with little or no success, Collier Pest Control, Southwest Florida’s Pest Authority can help you eliminate the Big Head Ants invading your home!  We have a 3 stage treatment that will control and eliminate Big Head Ants from your lawn and home.

FROGS PEST CONTROL EXTERMINATOR FORT MYERS NAPLES BONITA SPRINGS FLORIDA

TREE FROGS

F

Frogs are common throughout the world. There are over 85 species here in the United States. The most common species include tree frogs, toads, and bullfrogs. Tree frogs and bullfrogs are most common where there is adequate water for their survival and reproduction. Toads are more prevalent where it is dry. Though tree frogs are considered beneficial because they eat insects, in some cases local populations can become a nuisance.

Tree frogs can become a problem for many reasons. Tree frogs mostly live in trees but will find their way into homes. Once there, they will hide behind shutters, under siding window frames, siding, rain gutters, overhanging bricks and facia boards away from sunlight in shaded areas are all prime tree frog hiding sites during the day. Tree frogs like these areas and at night they will emerge to feed.

The problem with having tree frogs on your home is that they tend to make a mess. Their droppings will quickly accumulate below where they are nesting. Tree frog droppings look a lot like rat droppings and can easily fool people into believing they have a rodent problem.  While frogs in and of themselves may be harmless, but they often will leave feces and a sticky residue wherever they go.

Collier Pest Control Southwest Florida’s Pest Authority can help with our Frog and Lizard Repellant Treatment.  We can treat all areas around your home or business where tree frogs are roosting, such as: the soffits, eaves, lighting, garage, doors, window sills, pool cage, lanai furniture, and even around plants.  This all natural clear treatment material does not stain.  It repels frogs, toads, and lizards away by releasing a scent certain animals can detect and don’t like. Because this is an all natural treatment, monthly applications should be made to continue keeping your home or business Frog, Toad, and Lizard Free.

If you live in Naples, Bonita Springs, Fort Myers, or anywhere in Beautiful Southwest Florida and are having a Frog, Toad, or Lizard problem, call Collier Pest Control for a full explanation of our Frog and Lizard Repellant Treatment, or on any of our services, or look us up on our web site at collierpestcontrol.com.  Remember Florida does not have to be shared with pests.

FLEAS PEST CONTROL EXTERMINATOR FORT MYERS NAPLES BONITA SPRINGS FLORIDA

FLEA SERVICES

Collier Pest Control provides you with the latest technology and most effective method of flea control for you and your home.  Any home can become the home of fleas, especially if you have dogs or cats.  We can help you rid your home of fleas and problems they cause.  If your home has fleas the time has come to treat it professionally.

Collier Pest Control’s specially trained technicians will treat all your flooring including the carpet, vinyl, and tile.  Fleas also infest your furniture; our flea service treatment includes the treatment of all your upholstered furniture.

Adult fleas spend almost all their time on the host and feed many times a day from the host.  On average, a female flea lays 15-20 eggs per day for the 10-14 days that she is fertile.  These female adult fleas lay eggs on the tops of your pet’s hair.   As your pet rests or move through your home, these microscopic eggs drop onto the floor or furniture where they develop.  The first step toward an effective control of fleas is to break the life cycle, which is egg, larva, pupa, and adult.  Collier Pest Control’s advanced method of flea treatment contains both an adult control material and a material to control the larva stage (a growth regulator) that never lets the flea develop into an adult.

To insure that new fleas do not re-enter your home, outdoor flea treatments are sometimes necessary when pets are allowed outside regularly.

Collier Pest Control has two separate and completely different methods of indoor flea treatments and an effective outdoor flea lawn service to conveniently meet your needs and lifestyle.  We have an indoor dry yearly treatment and a 90 day indoor and outdoor treatment.  Our thoroughly trained staff can explain to you the different flea services and help you choose which is best suited for your needs.

Collier Pest Control has the best on pet spray, free with every indoor flea treatment.  We  treat all your fleas risk areas; the pet, the home, and the lawn.  No one can control fleas better or longer than Collier Pest Control.  Call today and get an estimate and complete explanation on any of our services.  Don’t let unwanted guests spoil your beautiful Southwest Florida lifestyle.  Remember, Florida does not have to be shared with insects.

WHITE FLY SPIRALING WHITE FLY PEST CONTROL EXTERMINATOR FORT MYERS NAPLES BONITA SPRINGS FLORIDA

WASPS PAPER AND MUD DOBBER WASP PEST CONTROL EXTERMINATOR FORT MYERS NAPLES BONITA SPRINGS FLORIDA

THE PAPER WASP

The Paper Wasp gets its name from the paper like material of which they construct their nests.  This wasp is recognized by its 5/8 to3/4 inch brownish to black bodies with yellow or red markings.  The Paper Wasps hang their comb nests under twigs and branches of trees and shrubs which can cause concern when ornamental shrubs and hedges are trimmed or fruit is being picked form trees.  They also like to hang their nests from porch ceilings, the top member of window and door frames, soffits, eaves, attic rafters, deck floor joists and railings, play ground equipment, almost any protected place imaginable.  If the nest is contacted or disturbed, the Paper Wasps on the nest at the time will defend the nest vigorously and the offender of the nest will probably get stung.  If in a breeze or wind when the Paper Wasps get disturbed, stand still and the wasps will fly around but will not follow you.  If you run the vacuum of wind from your movement will lead the wasps to you and you will get stung.  These wasps are beneficial insects by helping to control many types of insect pests.  If you need to control these wasps, it is essential that you control and kill the adults early in the morning or at night when all the wasps will be tending to the nest, then remove the nest.

THE MUDD DOBBER WASP

The Mudd Dobber Wasp gets its name from the fact that they construct their next of mud.  They are typically a nuisance pest, building their mud nests on sheltered sites like eaves, porch ceilings, garages, sheds, barns, open attic, or any protected wall or structure.  The Mudd Dobber Wasp is recognized by its ½ to 1 inch very slender metallic black body.  The nest looks like a clump of mud stuck on to the side of a structure and as the young adult Mudd Dobbers emerge from the nest they leave small holes in the nest, showing the nest is old or inactive. The Mudd Dobber Wasp does not defend their nests, and only rarely sting.  These wasps are beneficial insects and help control spiders.  If control is needed, first treat and control the female Mudd Dobber Wasp and then remove the nest from the structure with a putty knife or scraper.  Activity can be discouraged in a given area by an application of a microencapsulated material on the structure.

FLIES HUMPBACK FLIES PEST CONTROL EXTERMINATOR FORT MYERS NAPLES BONITA SPRINGS FLORIDA

HUMPBACK FLIES

ALSO KNOWN AS PHORID FLIES, FILTH FLY,SEWER FLY,

DRAIN FLY, VINEGAR FLIES

We’ve all seen them, those pesky gnat type flies that hover over you food or drinks in a restaurant or sports bar.  Most likely this is the pest that is bothering you.  This fly gets its name from the humpbacked profile when viewed from the side.

Adult humpback flies can be found in unsanitary places.  They can transport various disease-causing organisms to food materials.  They can even be found in human corpses in morgues, mortuaries, and mausoleums. This fly is a great concern in health-care facilities because of their unsanitary habits, and because larvae have been found in open wounds of patients.

The larvae breed in a wide variety of moist decaying organic matter which includes dung, fungi, and decaying plant material.  In offices, overwatered potted plants are often the source.  They also have been found in unusual places including a tin of boot polish, a pot of glue paint, and a bucket of animal-based glue.

The key to eliminating Humpback Flies is to find their breeding sources, all of them, and removing the organic material in drains, under refrigeration equipment, remove slabs for broken pipes under slabs and repair, residual pesticides are rarely if ever required for the control of phorid flies (humpback flies), but after breeding sources have been removed, a non residual pesticide can be used to kill the adults present.

If you’re finding small flies being a nuisance in your kitchen, bath, or your restaurant you most likely have Humpback Flies (Phorid Flies). Don’t be annoyed anymore; call, 239-454-4300, Collier Pest Control, Southwest Florida’s Pest Authority including Naples, Fort Myers, for a complete explanation on any of our services. Remember Florida does not have to be shared with insects.

LIZARDS EASTERN GLASS LIZARD PEST CONTROL EXTERMINATOR FORT MYERS NAPLES BONITA SPRINGS FLORIDA

EASTERN GLASS LIZARD

(SKINK)

The Eastern Glass Lizard has no legs and is often referred to as a Glass Snake.  It can be distinguished from snakes by their visible ear openings, eyelids, and small scales on the belly. It is actually a lizard, but it looks of course, like a snake.  The Eastern Glass Lizard lives mostly in the Southeast United States, and throughout Florida.  Being the largest of Florida’s native lizards, it can grow up to about 30 inches long, and they eat mostly insects and spiders.  They spend much of their lives burrowing through soil and piles of leaves in search of insects underground.  This Skink got its name because of its tail. Florida is home to four quite similar-looking legless species know as Glass Lizards.  As with many lizards, if it’s attacked and a predator has it by the tail, it can detach the tail, allowing the rest of the animal to escape and survive.  The tail of the Glass Lizard apparently will break into many pieces, like glass.  The pieces will also move, so that the predator will focus on them, and allow the body of the animal to get away.  Glass Lizards will allow themselves to be approached, but if you try to pick one up, it will thrash around wildly and probably scare you into dropping it.

If you live in Naples, Bonita Springs, Fort Myers, or anywhere in beautiful Southwest Florida and are having a problem with lizards or any other problem pest call, 239-455-4300 Collier Pest Control today for a free estimate and a complete explanation to any of our services, or look us up on our website at collierpestcontrol.com.  Do not let unwanted guests spoil your beautiful Southwest Florida lifestyle.  Remember, Florida does not have to be shared with insects!

RODENTS ROOF RAT PEST CONTROL EXTERMINATOR FORT MYERS NAPLES BONITA SPRINGS FLORIDA

RODENTS

ROOF RATS AND MICE

Collier Pest Control is Southwest Florida’s Pest Authority, Including Rodent Control!

The Roof Rat is an introduced species of rat native to southern Asia.  It was brought to America on the first ships to reach the New World and has spread around the world.  This rat is the same species that carried the bubonic plague around the world and is also the reservoir host for murine typhus.  Roof Rats are the worst rodent pest in the State of Florida and most abundant.  A typical roof rat is between 13 and 18 inches long from nose to tail.  It is commonly known as the black rat or palm squirrel, but is often dark brown in color.  Unlike other rats, their tails are longer than the length of their bodies and they have large ears.  Roof rats will nest in trees, woodpiles, garbage and plants, but they generally like inside high places, like attics.  They are good climbers and only need a hole the size of a quarter to gain entry.  They primarily consume fruits and nuts, although they will eat anything.  They tend to hoard food for consuming later.  They are known for hollowing out citrus fruit in trees.  Control of roof rats is not an easy task.  Professional Pest Management is needed to control these pests.  The tools of a Professional Pest Control Technician includes; the knowledge of cultural control (prevention and habitat management): Physical control (trapping and exclusion): Biological control (predators like snakes): and if needed chemical control (rodent baits and repellents).

The Florida House Mouse weighs less than an ounce.  It can fit in a crack of only a quarter inch.  They can and do get everywhere.  If your house has food and any small openings, eventually mice will find their way in.  A single mouse can’t eat a whole lot, but they nibble on many foods and defecate on everything, mice destroy considerably more food than they consume.  They can also spread diseases.  Some examples of diseases that can be spread by mice or rats are salmonellosis (food poisoning), rickett-sialpox, and lymphocytic choriomeningitis. Mice may also carry leptospirosis, ratbite fever, tapeworms, and organisms that can cause ringworm (a fungal skin disease) in humans.  They like to chew and gnaw everything, and will often chew on electrical wires, creating a fire hazard.

Collier Pest Control can eliminate unwanted rodent infestations, with our exclusive Rodent Treatment.  We will place control trapping equipment in all active areas on the interior of your home or building and set up exterior rodent control baiting stations around the outside of your home or building.  We then will monitor and remove any trapped rodents every other day until there is no more rodents active inside your home or building.  Permanent Exterior Rodent Baiting Stations are available for an extra onetime fee

Collier Pest Control has the knowledge, experience, and a highly trained staff to be able to control and protect you from Florida’s rodent problems.  If you live in Naples, Fort Myers, or Bonita Springs, or anywhere in beautiful Southwest Florida call 239-455-4300, Collier Pest Control for a full explanation on any of our services, or look us up on our web site at collierpestcontrol.com.  Remember Florida does not have to be shared with pests.

If you see your Ficus Trees or Hedge suddenly loosing its leaves or turning brown and tiny white, gnat-like, adult whiteflies fly from the foliage.  DON’T WAIT contact us quickly!  You may have the Fig White Fly attacking your Ficus.  They can defoliate your trees and hedges very quickly.  Although your ficus tree or hedge may appear to be dying after losing a lot of leaves, it may not be a goner.  If the twigs are still flexible, it may refoliate in a few weeks.  Very Important:  if you find an infestation do not pt pruning clippers in the yard waste, trash pick-up.  Don’t spread the flies to other areas of our neighborhood.  Keep the clippings in a garbage bag or in compose piles to kill the flies.

These Fig White Flies are hard to see compared to other species of whiteflies.  The body of the adult Fig Whitefly is yellow in color and the wings are white with a faint grey band towards the middle of the wing and a grey longitudinal bar on the inside of the back edge of each  of the front wings.

BED BUGS PEST CONTROL EXTERMINATOR FORT MYERS NAPLES BONITA SPRINGS FLORIDA

BED BUGS ARE AMONG US

Sometimes referred to as “red coats”, “chinches,” or “mahogany flats,” bed bugs are appearing in great numbers in all parts of our society.  From upper income homes, hotels, businesses, apartments, even hospitals.  Infestation reports are up 5000 percent, due to international travel and the loss of DDT as an insecticide control product.

Bed bugs are a broadly flattened six legged insect with greatly reduced front wings.  Adults are usually brown in color and the size of an apple seed.  After feeding the body is often swollen and red in color.  Bed bugs have never been implicated in the spread of disease to humans but are suspected carriers of leprosy, oriental sore, Q-fever, and brucellosis.

The two bed bug species important to man are the common bed bug and the tropical bed bug.  Both of these species can be picked up and spread here in Southwest Florida and the U.S.

The nightmare begins when a bed bug finds its way into your clothing; it usually happens at a hotel but can start anywhere.  Once bed bugs have been found in your home it has nothing to do with poor hygiene.  It only takes one bed bug to hitch a ride on your clothing (furniture, suitcase, etc.) to infest your residence.  A female bed bug will lay approximately 200 eggs during her life span at a rate of one to twelve eggs per day.  Within six to seventeen days bed bug nymphs emerge from the eggs and take five molts, approximately ten weeks, to reach maturity.  What’s worse is that bed bugs can live up to one year without any further blood feedings.  Some species of bed bugs are adapted with mouthparts that can feed without pain.  They inject an anesthetic to numb you so you don’t feel the bite and an anti-coagulant to thin the blood to feed better.

Bed bugs are most active at night and are extremely shy and wary so their infestations are not easily located.  They can be located in mattresses, box springs, pillows, bed frames, head boards, loose wall paper, sofa seams, chairs, rugs, edges of carpets, end tables, dressers,

2.

baseboards, window casings, receptacles, cracks in the wall plaster, televisions, radios, clocks, computers, phones, sleeping bags, picture frames, clothing, and any very small dark crack or void.  Heavy infestations can be located by reddish brown spotting around entry and exit points of their hiding places made from excrements of the bed bug and a distinctive foul order from the oily secretions around the infested areas.

Once an infestation has been found, you need to take quick action to prevent further infestation of the bed bugs.  You can take all your linens and infected clothing and place them in a hot dryer for at least 20 minutes. You can vacuum the infested areas to reduce and capture bed bugs and their eggs, but because the eggs are embedded to the fabric, you may have to scrape the surface. Once you have vacuumed everything call Collier Pest Control to treat you entire home for these unsightly vampire pests.  Collier Pest Control can also offer you mattress covers to protect you from bed bugs that have infested deep in the mattress padding.

Collier Pest Control has two methods to rid your home of bed bugs.  Both use vacuum extraction and insect controlling materials to eliminate and control the bed bugs in all of their hiding area. The Vapor Heat Treatment can rid your home from a bed bug problem throughout the entire house.  The Chambered Heat Treatment method incorporates a control heat treatment to encase all infested furniture and bedding in a heat chamber to rid bed bugs from a hotel room or efficiency, plus applying preventative materials to the rest of the hiding areas.  Both methods are successful in ridding your home, hotel room, or efficiency of this most unwanted nasty pest.

Call Collier Pest Control today for a full explanation of both bed bugs control methods or any of our services.  Don’t let unwanted pests spoil your beautiful Southwest Florida’s lifestyle.  Remember Florida does not have to be shared with insects. TICKS BROWN DOG TICKS PEST CONTROL EXTERMINATOR FORT MYERS NAPLES BONITA SPRINGS FLORIDA

TICK SERVICE

Collier Pest Control is Southwest Florida’s Pest Control Authority.  We are specialist’s in general household pest and termite control. Our approach to tick control is not just with surface sprays.  Collier Pest Control developed a complete thorough Tick Treatment that treats your complete house and every place your pet is active; all the cracks and crevices, voids, windows and door casings, furniture, baseboards, and rugs.

The Brown Dog Tick is the most common tick here in beautiful Southwest Florida.  The Brown Dog Tick does not vector any disease, such as Lyme disease or Rocky Mountain spotted fever.  Ticks are a serious problem and can cause major health problems if allowed to infest your living area.  Ticks are not an insect and are closely related to the spider.  Adult ticks have 8 legs, insects only have 6 legs.  All ticks are parasitic and feed on the blood of animals.  Most ticks spend the majority of their life on or near the ground waiting for a suitable host to come attach themselves on.  Ticks will climb onto an appropriate object, such as a tall blade of grass, bush, fence post, side of a building to wait for a host to pass by. The Brown Dog Tick can live for as long as 200 days without a blood meal.

The female Brown Dog Tick can lay a mass of 1000 to 3000 eggs. These eggs will hatch in 19 to 60 days into a 6 legged, small, immature seed tick. Within 3 to 6 days it will molt and change into an 8 legged nymph tick.  After a blood meal from a host, this nymph will molt in 12 to 29 days into an adult tick.

If you find a tick attached to you or a family member never just pull it off the skin.  A tick is easily removed by first touching the tick with a warm butter knife or alcohol to get it to remove its head from the skin. Then grab the tick and lift it off the skin.

Don’t be over whelmed with a tick infestation in your home. If you are looking for a dependable knowledgeable exterminator and live in Naples, Fort Myers, or Southwest Florida call 239-455-4300 Collier Pest Control for a free estimate and a complete explanation on any of our services, or look us up on our web site at collierpestcontrol.com.  Don’t let unwanted guests spoil your beautiful Southwest Florida lifestyle.  Remember, Florida does not have to be shared with insects!

ANTS GHOST ANTS PEST CONTROL EXTERMINATOR FORT MYERS NAPLES BONITA SPRINGS FLORIDA

GHOST ANTS

The Ghost Ant has become the number one pest ant found in Southwest Florida. This ant is identified by the worker ants running erratically and rapidly on a set trail that can be traced back to the nest.  They are very tiny, about 1/32 of an inch long, and derives its name from the fact that it is very difficult to see.  The head and thorax of the Ghost Ant is dark in color and the abdomen and legs are very pale.  This forces a person to look very closely at surfaces just to see the workers moving about.  They will create trails from just a few ants to hundreds.

These trails can usually be located along building foundations and up the walls outdoors.  Ghost ants will readily trail down branches of trees and shrubs into the structure, and through cracks around eaves and soffits.  The Ghost Ant's primary habitat is outdoors.  They will nest in the soil, dead tree limbs, under stones, and in hollow cavities of plants.  Inside, the Ghost Ant will nest inside wall voids, behind base boards, and under cabinets.

Each Ghost Ant colony is moderate in size, with thousands of workers and numerous reproductive queens.  New colonies are started by "budding" where one or more reproductive queens, together with workers and brood (larvae and pupae), move away from the original colony.

The worker Ghost Ant is very fond of honeydew secreted by aphids, but will also feed upon live and dead insects.  Moisture is a limiting factor in the survival of Ghost Ants. They have a very high need for moisture.

Conditions which result in excess moisture such as poor drainage or plumbing leaks should be corrected.  If possible, a vegetation free border should be installed around the foundation.  Branches of trees and shrubs which

touch the structure should be trimmed back.  Successful control of the Ghost Ant depends upon the ability to locate

the foraging ants and  the nest sites.  The liberal use of bait in proper locations works well when combined with an exterior power spray treatment.  The Ghost Ant can often be controlled within a few days.

PLASTER BAG WORMS PEST CONTROL EXTERMINATOR FORT MYERS NAPLES BONITA SPRINGS FLORIDA

PLASTER BAG WORMS

The Plaster Bag Worm is similar in appearance and closely related to clothes moths.    This unique looking creature is easily seen on light colored walls.  Close examination of the house may reveal bagworms attached to the underside of chairs, bookcases, and other furniture.  They are often found along the edge of rugs, near baseboards, or on the lower edges of walls.  Bagworms are quite common in garages and underneath buildings.  This larva mainly feed on spider webs; however, they will also feed on fabrics made of natural fiber

The larva of bagworms lives in a flatten gray, watermelon seed shaped case about ½ inch long.  The case is constructed of silken fiber and sand particles, lint, paint fragments, and other debris attached.  The case has a slit like opening at each end, and the larva is able to move around and feed from either end.

Control of the Plaster Bagworm Larva is similar to control of clothes moths.  Good housekeeping is important, especially the removal of spider webs.  Sweep down and remove any spider webs and Plaster Bagworm casings.

Collier Pest Control can control these pests with our “Collier Complete” pest control service.  This service thoroughly treats all the cracks and crevices the inside of your home and completes the service with a broadcast spraying of the eaves, soffits, flowerbeds, entry ways, and 5 to 10 feet around your home.
