PLASTER BAG WORMS PEST CONTROL NAPLES FLORIDA

PLASTER BAG WORMS

The Plaster Bag Worm is similar in appearance and closely related to clothes moths.    This unique looking creature is easily seen on light colored walls.  Close examination of the house may reveal bagworms attached to the underside of chairs, bookcases, and other furniture.  They are often found along the edge of rugs, near baseboards, or on the lower edges of walls.  Bagworms are quite common in garages and underneath buildings.  This larva mainly feed on spider webs; however, they will also feed on fabrics made of natural fiber

The larva of bagworms lives in a flatten gray, watermelon seed shaped case about 1/2 inch long.  The case is constructed of silken fiber and sand particles, lint, paint fragments, and other debris attached.  The case has a slit like opening at each end, and the larva is able to move around and feed from either end.

Control of the Plaster Bagworm Larva is similar to control of clothes moths.  Good housekeeping is important, especially the removal of spider webs.  Sweep down and remove any spider webs and Plaster Bagworm casings.

Call, 239-455-4300, for a complete explanation on the Plaster Bag Worm or any other service, or look us up on or web site at collierpestcontrol.com.  Remember Florida does not have to be shared with insects.

SUBTERRANEAN TERMITES PEST CONTROL NAPLES FLORIDA

SUBTERRANEAN TERMITES

Subterranean Termites are social insects that live in colonies consisting of many individuals.  The colonies are composed of workers, soldiers, and reproductives.  The workers are very small, 1/8th of an inch, have not wings, are white to cream colored and very numerous.  Soldiers defend the colony against insects, like ants, that can attack the colony.  Soldiers are wingless and white in color with large brown heads.  King and Queen Termites perform the reproductive functions of the colony.  They are dark brown to black in color.

Subterranean Termites, as the name suggests, live in the soil, in most cases.  Subterranean Termites are an important part of our environment.  In a natural setting, this type of termite recycles dead trees back into the soil.  Without the termite, our forests would be littered with dead trees as wood "rot" cannot break the dead trees down fast enough.  The termite sees the wood in your home as just another food source.   If the wood of your home does not contact the soil, they can build mud tunnels or tubes to reach the wood several feet above the ground.   These mud tunnels can extend for 50-60 feet to reach wood and often enter a structure through expansion joints in concrete slabs or where utilities enter the home.  The main portion of the termite colony stays in the ground and the foraging worker termites come into a home through cracks in the concrete, as small as 1/64th of an inch, a dimes width.  Once inside, they will eat the wood and bring it back to the nest in the ground as food to the termites remaining in the colony.

Subterranean termites feed on wood or other items that contain cellulose, such as paper, fiberboard, and some fabrics derived from cotton or plant fibers.  Subterranean Termites are often difficult to detect.  Detection can be from the presence of winged reproductives, mud tubes on the sides of your home, or seeing wood damage.

The control of subterranean termites is often a major expense and like any other household expense should be carefully considered.  An important point to remember is that Subterranean Termites work SLOWLY!  There are many variables when considering how fast or slow a termite colony will damage a home.  A small colony can typically eat six inches of a wooden 2X4 board in one year.  You do not need to rush into an agreement with a firm before you thoroughly investigate what are all your alternatives.

Collier Pest Control can control all types of termites for you economically.  Let our experienced termite

Inspector come and evaluate if you have a termite problem or some other form of damage.  If it is termites, we can offer to you different types of service to correct the infestation.  Collier Pest Control offers long term protection  with our in ground termite baiting systems if you plan to keep you home, or traditional liquid treatments for a 5 or 7 year protection.

SWARMING SUBTERRANEAN TERMITES

During the spring of each year, the Subterranean Termites produce winged Swarmers.  The purpose of these swarmers is to fly up onto the air, find a mate and start a new colony.  After mating, both the male and the female after mating land on a suitable nesting area, and lose their wings. When they swarm into your home, in most cases, they cannot do any damage to your home.  To start a nest, Subterranean Termites need a moist, wet, or rotten wood.  Unless you have one of those conditions the swarmer termites cannot hurt you.  Swarmer termites are attracted to light when they emerge from the colony.  They may be found in window sills or around your T.V. or ceiling lights.  Try not to spray these termite swarmers.  They will die within a few hours if no wooden moisture nesting area is found.  You can use a vacuum to rid yourself of these nuisance pests.

We live in a sea of Subterranean Termites here in Florida.  It's not if you will get a termite problem, It is when will you get a termite problem.  The University of Florida states that, 2/3's of all new homes in Florida will have a termite problem within 5 years.  To protect your home have a FREE TERMITE INSPECTION performed yearly from Collier Pest Control.  Then consider one of our economic protective Subterranean Termite services to protect your valuable home from unwanted damage and stress.

Call, 239-455-4300,  Collier Pest Control today for a FREE TERMITE INSPECTION and a complete explanation and free estimate on any of our services, or look us up on our web site at collierpestcontrol.com. THE FLORIDA COTTON RAT PEST CONTROL NAPLES FLORIDA

THE FLORIDA COTTON RAT

The Florida Cotton Rat inhabits most of the southern United States, including most of Florida.  This rat is also known at the Hispid Cotton Rat.  The Florida Cotton Rat prefers to live in dense covered grassy fields, overgrown roadsides, or fencerow vegetation adjacent to cultivated fields.  They also
occupy meadows, marshy areas, cactus patches, and weedy ditch banks.  Under the protective cover, the Florida Cotton Rat will have well-defined runways radiating in all direction from the nest site.

This rat is a moderately large, robust rodent with a scaly, sparsely haired tail that is shorter than
the combined head and body.  They have relatively large eyes.  The ears are large but almost hidden in the fur.  Distinguishing characteristic is the rough grizzled appearance of the blackish or grayish fur and the rather stiff black guard hairs.  They average 10 inches long including the tail length of 4 inches.  They may be identified as a Norway rat but are smaller in size.

The Florida Cotton Rats are normally herbivores, eating the roots, stems, leaves, and seeds of a wide
variety of plants, fruits, berries and nuts.  Cotton rats will cut tall plants off at the base and continue to cut them into shorter sections.  They will also eat insects, the eggs and young of ground-nesting birds and carcasses of dead animals.

These rats are basically nocturnal but will venture out in the daytime and are active year-round.  They do not store food or hibernate.  They are excitable, pugnacious, and aggressive toward mice living in the same fields.  Their nests are a crude mass of dry grass fibers stripped from larger plant stems, placed in shallow surfaces depression, among clumps of coarse grasses, underground in shallow tunnels, or under rocks or logs.  They seldom inter homes or structures.

WHITE FOOT ANTS PEST CONTROL NAPLES FLORIDA

WHITE FOOT ANTS

The White Footed ant is native to tropical Asia, but has been inadvertently introduce into South Florida.  The White Footed Ant arrived in the Homestead are of Florida in 1986, followed by rapidly spreading up and out expanding throughout the rest of South Florida.

The White Footed Ants are relatively small ants with a black body and yellowish-white feet, called tibia and tarsi.  These ants do not bite or sting, nor have they been reported to cause
any type of structural damage.  They are just a nuisance ant attracted to sweet foods.  Thus, it is common to find them foraging indoors around kitchens and bathrooms, and outside on hedges infested with honeydew producing insects, such as aphid and scales.

White Footed Ants, for many pest control companies, have been extremely difficult to control because of several characteristics of their biology.  One big problem is that they establish colonies of well over a million ants, over half being worker ants.  Workers ants are sterile females that are responsible for foraging for food and caring for the nest.  Another problem is that food ingested by the worker ants is never shared back in the colony, as like most every other type of ant.  These sterile worker ants are capable of laying unfertilized eggs.  These Thinner more fragile non fertile eggs are what the worker ants, larva, and queens in the colony use as their food source, therefore, any toxic bait to kill off ants never reach the ants in a White Foot Ant colony, and only affect the foraging worker ants that eat the insect killing baits.

While White Foote Ants are not directly harmful to humans or pets, their presence within the home is a nuisance. Collier Pest Control has developed a 3-step 6-week treatment method to eliminate unwanted White Foote Ants from you home and property.  Collier Pest Control will
first use insect killing baits inside you home and attic to eliminate any activity being seen inside your home.  Then we will treat the immediate sides of your home with special insect killing materials to kill any trailing White Foot Ant attempting to enter your home.  The 3-stage of this treatment method is to use special insect killing materials up to 30 or 40 feet around your home, killing off all activity trailing toward your home.  Collier Pest Control will follow up with a service treatment each week for 5 more weeks insuring that no White Foot Ants are infested or entering your home.

If you have been run out of your home by unwanted White Foot Ants, call, 239-455-4300,
Collier Pest Control today for a complete explanation and free estimate on any of our services, or look us up on our web site at collierpestcontrol.com.  Don't let insect spoil your beautiful Southwest Florida lifestyle.  Remember, Florida doesn't have to be shared with insects.

ASIAN COCKROACHES PEST CONTROL NAPLES FLORIDA

ASIAN COCKROACHES

Collier Pest Control is your Southwest Florida Pest Authority, including the Asian Cockroach.  The Asian Cockroach was recently introduced into Florida as a new species in 1986.  It has spread over at least one third of the state, from the center of Florida to Collier County and Southwest Florida.

The Asian Roach is a rural and suburban pest that mainly infests single family, suburban houses and yards.  The Asian Roach is abundant outdoors, where populations of 30,000 to 250,000 per acre have been found.  The adults are strong fliers and can fly up to 120 feet in a single flight.

Adult Asian Roaches take flight even during the day if disturbed.  At dusk there is a frenzy of activity when adults are active in grass and mulch. These active pests invade any opening in
a house, such as a lighted doorway or window.  Once inside, they crawl on illuminated television screens and walls while the lights are on during the evening.

The Asian Roach is almost identical in appearance to the German cockroach.  Many people confuse this outdoor pest with the most common of indoor infestations, the German Roach.  The wings of the Asian Roach are usually longer and are lighter brown in color than most German Roaches.  Asian Roaches are found mostly outdoors but can be seen inside around windows, doors, illuminated lighting and away from food areas.  The German Roach is always found inside and around food areas.  The female Asian Roach can produce an egg capsule with 40 eggs every 28 days.  The nymphs will mature to adults in about 6 to 7 weeks.

Collier Pest Control can control these outdoor pests with our "Collier Complete" pest control service.  We can thoroughly treat all your inside cracks and crevices and complete the service with a broadcast spraying of the eaves, soffits, flower beds, entry ways, and 5 to 10 feet perimeter around your home.

BRAHMINY BLIND SNAKE PEST CONTROL NAPLES FLORIDA

BRAHMINY BLIND SNAKE

Two things that can freak some people out more than any other are snakes and worms.  The Brahminy Blind Snake has the dual misfortune of being a snake and looking like a worm.  The Brahminy Blind Snakes look somewhat like an earthworm.  The adult is shiny and dark brown to grayish black in color with a somewhat lighter lower surface. But, if you look carefully you will see that earthworms are segmented with rings around their body and the Brahminy Blind Snake is not segmented and have a smooth slick body.

The Brahminy Blind Snake originally lived in Southeastern Asia.  With expansion of worldwide markets, sellers of greenhouse materials have carried this snake to other tropical and subtropical parts of the world, including Florida and Hawaii.  It was once a myth that there are no snakes in Hawaii.  Perhaps this was true in the past, but not since the Brahminy Blind Snake was introduced to these islands somewhere in the 1980's. In Florida this snake is found from the Florida Keys north to Lake Okeechobee, which includes all of Southwest Florida.  They are also found in St. Petersburg and around Gainesville.

Adult Brahminy Blind Snakes are small and thin, averaging between 2 1/2 to 6 1/2 inches in length.  The head and tail-tip look much the same, with no narrowing of the neck.  The tiny eyes are covered with translucent scales, rendering these snakes almost entirely blind.  They cannot form images, but are still capable of registering light intensity.  This tropical/subtropical snake lives outside in the soil, plant litter, and rotting woody materials in areas that are warm enough o support it.  Here in Southwest Florida this snake can be found in garden, flower beds, potted plants, and out in the lawn under the thatch built up by years of mowing.  This
snake feeds on the eggs, larva, and pupae of ants and termites in the areas where they live. Another interesting fact about the Brahminy Blind Snake it can lay eggs or can bear their young alive.  All of these snakes are female and reproduce unisexally.  One Brahminy Blind Snake introduced into your area can then infest your lawn and flower beds within a short period of time.

Because the Brahminy Blind Snake is not an insect pest, they should not be treated with insecticide.  The most effective way to rid the home of Brahminy Blind Snakes is to just pick them up and remove them from the home.  If left alone inside a home, they cannot survive for long.  These snakes must live in soil and are found many times living in interior potted plants.  If this becomes a recurring problem the homeowner may wish to move any interior potted plants along with their soil outside.  By moving their home, you remove the snakes.

If you would like more information on the Brahminy Blind Snake call, 239-455-4300, Collier Pest Control for a free explanation on this or any of our services, or look us up on our web site at www.collierpestcontrol.com.  Don't let unwanted pests spoil your beautiful Southwest Florida lifestyle.  Remember, Florida does not have to be shared with problem pests.

Termite Inspections by Collier Pest Control NAPLES FLORIDA

Termite Inspections by Collier Pest Control

THE RISKS IN INSPECTING A HOME
FOR WOOD
DESTROYING ORGANISMS

Every year, thousands of homes are attacked by wood destroying organisms. In fact, termites cause more damage than hurricanes, tornadoes, hail, and fire combined! Banks, and homeowners need to know if there is visible evidence in a home before investing their money.  In most cases, if there is a infestation problem after a termite inspection, it is because the inspector failed his or her responsibilities.  The inspector got "lazy" or distracted and did not inspect thoroughly.  It is important to know how buildings are constructed to understand where and how termites and other Wood Destroying Organisms enter the structure.  There is no substitute for hard work and experience.

Most homes have a "termite" inspection before the property changes hands.  A "termite" inspection is really mis-named.  The inspection as required and defined by Florida State Law is really a "Wood Destroying Organisms" inspection.  In Florida, which types of organisms we inspect for is defined by state law.  These are not the only insects that destroy wood in a home, but rather what, by law, we must inspect for all species of termites, powder post beetles, old house borers, and wood decay fungi.  It is interesting to note that Carpenter Ants have the ability to destroy wood , but are NOT part of the scope of the inspection.

In general, a wood destroying organism inspector looks at all the VISIBLE areas of the structure to find any evidence of an infestation of wood destroying organisms.  Our inspector then reports what was found on the form required by Florida state law.  An inspection may include sounding or probing of suspect areas.  As you will learn, the inspector cannot see into walls , voids, under furniture, carpeting, or in low crawl spaces, although the buyer expects you can!

The public will often expect that the inspection guarantees that there are no wood destroying organisms in the home.  THIS IS NOT TRUE!  The report is only an indicator of the presence or absence of an infestation based upon WHAT WAS VISIBLE AND ACCESSIBLE ON THE DAY OF INSPECTION!  If evidence is found, a proposal for treatment, and a warranty is given to the people whom ordered the inspection.

If damage or signs of a live infestation is seen, the inspector will then include a proposal for the control of the insect with the inspection form.

This is why we at Collier Pest Control back up all our guaranteed termite inspections with a full year's
warrantee, that if any evidence of termite infestation is found within a year from the paid inspection, Collier Pest Control will gladly come out and treat the termite infestation.  We are that confident of our termite inspectors not missing any hidden termite infestations in your home.

Call, 239-455-4300, today to order your free termite inspection and a full explanation on any of our service, along with a free estimate, or look us up on our web site at www.collierpestcontrol.com.  Don't let unwanted pest spoil your beautiful Southwest Florida lifestyle. Remember, Florida does not have to be shared with insects!

MOTH FLYS PEST CONTROL NAPLES FLORIDA

MOTH FLYS

An annoying and troublesome pest that concerns
numerous homeowners is the moth fly, also commonly known as the drain fly,
filter fly, or sewage fly. Moth flies are frequently found indoors on windows,
sinks and walls. The source of the fly infestation is generally from sinks and
floor drains, or from nearby sewage plants or waste disposal areas. Polluted
waters and wet organic materials are preferred breeding areas of the fly.

The adult fly is about one-tenth inch long (about
one-third the size of a housefly). It has a dark gray body and lighter colored
wings. The body and wings are densely covered with long hairs which give the
body a fuzzy or hairy appearance, hence the name "moth fly".

Eggs are deposited throughout the spring and summer in
moist, decomposing organic materials. The gelatinous organic deposits, which
accumulate in drains, provide an ideal breeding site. Eggs hatch into the
maggots, which feed in this organic matter. Under favorable conditions, maggots
mature in about two weeks and form a hard shell (puparium) within which the
pupa forms and from which the adult fly emerges.

Control varies with the origin of the moth fly
infestation. The most economical and sanitary way is to remove the organic
material in which they breed. This requires cleaning sinks, drain pipes, and
traps with a stiff wire brush or by steam. Several new products are now
available that contain either bacteria or enzymes which breakdown the
gelatinous scum in drains. They are applied as either a pour around the drain
lip or injected as foam. Most pest management companies provide this as a
service. To determine which drain is infested, place a jar over the outlet or

BOOKLICE / PSOCIDS PEST CONTROL NAPLES FLORIDA

BOOKLICE / PSOCIDS

Booklice are very small insects found on books and
papers.   They are both winged and
wingless and less than a 1/8 of an inch, with chewing mouthparts.  There are more than a 100 species
collectively called psocids, including Booklice are a part. The term "lice" is
somewhat misleading because none of these insects are parasitic or have 8 legs.
Most of the species are found inside
buildings.  The two most commonly found
are the common Booklouse and the Deathwatch.
These are often found among books and papers.  They also can be found in stored grain, dried
foods, insect collections, furniture, beddings, warm moist areas, leaking water
pipes, air conditioning drain pans, windowsills, or damaged roofs.

The
control of psocids is directly related to finding the source of the Booklice
and the source of the moisture that supports these insects. Infested furniture
and bedding or other movable furnishings should be thoroughly cleaned and
aired.  All infested foods should be
discarded.  All excess moisture areas
should be dried, repaired and aired to kill fungi. Insecticides can reduce the
population of Booklice for a short length of time.  To completely eliminate psocids you must find
the source of moisture supporting the molds and fungi that the Booklice feed on
and eliminate it.

THE FLORIDA PALMETTO BUG PEST CONTROL NAPLES FLORIDA

THE FLORIDA PALMETTO BUG

                Collier
Pest Control is your Southwest Florida Pest Authority, including the famous
Florida Palmetto Bug.  This Famous
Florida Palmetto Bug is one of Florida's best legions.  It hides in closets, under appliances, in
dressers draws or under your bed just waiting to run out at you!  This famous bug is known to attack by fling
right for you!  This monster of the dark
is also known to breed in numbers to high to count!

                The
real facts are there is no such thing as a Palmetto Bug.  The American cockroach is the first to be
labeled a Palmetto Bug.  The American
Roach is the largest of the common roach species at about 1 1/2 inches long,
reddish brown in color, with fully developed wings.  This large bug seldom flies but is capable of
gliding long distances.  Each female
American Roach can develop an egg capsule of 15 eggs every week.

                Another
villain, recently, to be named the Palmetto Bug is the Australian
Cockroach.  This roach is similar in
appearance, size, and color.  This
startling pest has distinguished yellow military type lieutenant strips along
the outer front of either wing. This strong flier has a prominent bat shaped
dark spot in the center of the pronotum, the area just behind the head.  This Australian Roach can develop an egg
capsule with 15 eggs every 10 days.

                Both
the American and the Australian Roach are primary outside pests.  During periods of cold, extreme hot and dry
weather, or excessive rainfall they will try to enter buildings foraging for
food.  Both are found living outdoors in
landscape, tree trucks, under rocks, around drainpipes, and any place moisture
and shelter will protect them.

                Collier
Pest Control can control these pests with our "Collier Complete" pest control
service.  This service thoroughly treats
all the cracks and crevices the inside of your home and completes the service
with a broadcast spraying of the eaves, soffits, flowerbeds, entry ways, and 5
to 10 feet around your home.

Collier Pest Control through experience has learned that

HOUSE FLIES PEST CONTROL NAPLES FLORIDA

HOUSE FLIES

                Collier
Pest Control is Southwest Florida's Pest Authority, including the common House
Fly.  The House Fly is of the most common
of all insects.  It is worldwide in
distribution and is a pest in homes, barns, poultry houses, food processing
plants, dairies, and recreation areas. The House Fly has a tremendous breeding
potential all year in Florida and can produce a generation in less than 2
weeks. House Fly eggs can be laid in almost any type of warm organic material,
such as fermenting vegetation, manure, or garbage. House Fly eggs hatch within
24 hours into tiny larva called maggots. In 3 to 6 day these maggots migrate to
drier areas and cocoon themselves just like a butterfly.  A House Fly can complete its life cycle, (egg,
larva, pupa, and adult) in Florida in 6 to 10 days, living a life span of about
30 days.

                House
Flies digest their food outside their bodies. They excrete a fluid on their
food to digest it and then draw this fluid, with the digested food, up through
their sponging sucking mouth part.  This
is why House Flies can vector or spread diseases such as dysentery and
diarrhea.  Flies can be a problem here in
Southwest Florida all year round, but the strongest activity is from May
through July.

Collier Pest Control has many ways
to help you combat flies and their annoying problems.  We have put together some items that can
offer help with continuing fly problems.
First, try to eliminate excess food sources such as open garbage cans,
unused pet food, excess pet excrement, open drain covers, broken sprinkler
heads, uncleaned mops and brooms.   Eliminate any item a fly could use as
food.  Second, repair or correct all
openings to your home or business a fly could enter such as broken screens,
open doors, non sealing weather stripping, and open construction cracks in the
building.  Finally, Collier Pest Control
can assist you in mechanical fly control.
We can provide you with fly bait for quick easy control, electronic fly
traps for inside or outside control, thorough broadcast treatment of insect
controlling materials to help give you a quick control, and expert assistance
from manufacturers, distributors, and educators.

GERMAN ROACHES PEST CONTROL NAPLES FLORIDA

GERMAN ROACHES

                Collier
Pest Control is your Southwest Florida Pest Authority including the German
Cockroaches.   The German Roach is the
most common household insect pest found in the United States.  They are usually found infesting in food
preparation areas, kitchens, and bathrooms.
In severe infestations, they have the capability of living in any
portion of a heated structure.  They
favor warm, humid atmospheres where temperatures are around 70 to 75
degrees.  The German Roach is most active
at night and hides in secluded areas such as cupboards, behind cabinets, wall
voids, and motor housings of appliances.

                The
adult German Roach is about 1/2 inch long, brown, and has two dark longitudinal
bands or streaks on the top the thorax (just behind the head).   German
Roaches are regularly carried from place to place in such things as bagged
potatoes, onion bags, beverage cartons, grocery bags, handbags, and in the
folds of clothing.

                The German
Roach has the highest reproductive potential of all common pest
cockroaches.  Female German Roaches produce
about 30 to 50 eggs at a time.  The eggs
are contained in a capsule with is attached to the tip of the abdomen and
carried throughout most of the incubation period.  The eggs hatch in about 28 days at room
temperature, and reach maturity in 40 to 125 days.  Adult female German Roaches live about 200
days producing 6 to 8 egg capsules or 180 to 400 eggs.

                Sanitation
is the cornerstone to effective and long lasting German Roach control.  Accessible water and food material must be
eliminated as much as possible. Hiding, harborage areas need to be sealed off
where possible.  Remove hiding areas like
open trashcans, old newspapers, rag piles, unused grocery bags, unused boxes,
excess grease and food around appliances, and any place a roach could hide or eat.

                Collier
Pest Control can control regular infestations of German Roaches with our
"Collier Complete" pest control service.
If the infestation is severe, we must apply our thorough German Roach
Treatment to all parts of your home.
Both services treat the cracks and crevices inside your home as well as
the perimeter, mulch beds, soffits, eaves, and entryways outside effectively
and quickly.

FIRE ANTS IN FLORIDA PEST CONTROL NAPLES FLORIDA

FIRE ANTS IN FLORIDA

THE LITTLE FIRE ANT

                The
Little Fire Ant gets its name from its very painful sting.  However, it is not closely related to the true
fire ants which belong to the group of fire ants from Central and South
America.  Here in Florida it is located
in Central and South Florida.  These ants
do not seem to form definite underground nests but instead appear in clusters
beneath objects and in crack and crevices.
New colonies are started by budding where workers and inseminated
females leave the parent colony and wander off, but remain part of the super
colony. Little Fire Ants tend to eliminate competitive ant species within their
territory.  The Little Fire Ant is less
aggressive than The Native Fire Ant or The Imported Fire Ant.  They may be crawling on you for some time
without being disturbed or stinging.
Since they do not have distinctive mounds a person may not realize they
are standing in a Little Fire Ant area and be stung without warning. The Little
Fire Ant is recognized by its light to golden brown color with the abdomen
slightly darker.  It has a pair of spines
on its pedicel instead of a distinctive node.
It also has very large mandibles, a robust body for its size, and a
stinger at the end of the gaster.

THE NATIVE FIRE ANT

                The
Native Fire Ant or sometimes call the Southern Fire Ant was the original fire
ant to the South and Florida for years.
It nests in the ground but does not build the large mounds like the red
imported fire ants does.  The Native Fire
Ant is less aggressive than its exotic sister the red imported fire ant.  This ant builds mounds that are irregular
craters consisting of scattered soil with multiple, obscure entrances.  These nests are in the open under objects
such as boards and stones, sand sometimes in woodwork or masonry.   A person may not be aware that they are
standing in a Native Fire Ant area and have Native Fire Ants on them before
they realize the stinging.  The Native
Fire Ant is omnivorous with a distinct preference for oily meat and nuts and
other high protein foods.  They will chew
on clothing, kill young poultry, feed on various plants and seeds, gnaw into
vegetables and fruits, and remove the rubber insulation from around telephones
wires.  These ants are recognized by
their body color is highly variable with the head and thorax yellowish red and
the gaster dark.  Some eastern forms have
a brownish to black head and thorax.
They have a two segmented petiole instead of a node, and a stinger at
the end of the gaster.  The larger
mandible and clypeus has two distinct teeth on their robust body.

THE IMPORTED FIRE
ANT

                The
Imported Fire Ant is the most aggressive fire ant for its sting and destruction
of property. This ant is found from Southern Florida west to Texas and as far
north as Virginia.  The Imported Fire Ant
has an omnivorous diet and opportunistic feeding habits, and they feed on any
plant or animal they encounter.  In heavy
infestations coexisting species of ants other invertebrates and vertebrates
suffer and are sometimes eliminated.  The
Red Imported fire ant has been known to kill live stock, like cows out in a
pasture. The painful sting which they are able to inflict in unison after
crawling up the legs of an unwitting victim is the basis of their
reputation.  The venom of the Red
Imported Fire Ant contains piperidines, which cause a burning sensation, and
proteins, which can cause life threatening anaphylactic shock in a small
percentage of the population.  The Red
Imported Fire Ant is recognized by its body color is an almost uniform dark
reddish brown.  They are 1/8 to 1/4 inch
long and have a two segmented petiole and a stinger at the end of the
gaster.  The large mandibles and clypeus
has three distinctive teeth on their robust body.
